View Full Version : NEW SOUNDTRACKS TITLES! Coldplay: 'We're still trying to deliver our album masterpiece'
http://www.nme.com/news/coldplay/54536
Hey dear Coldplayers, I've big news. We have finally TWO song titles of the LP5!
Tell me what you think Coldplayers and don't forget the poll !
Enjoy. :D
Coldplay's Chris Martin has told NME that the band are striving to write their "masterpiece" with the follow-up to 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends'. The frontman, speaking in the new issue of NME, on UK newsstands today (January 12), or available digitally, spoke about new songs including 'Princess Of China' and 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', before admitting that he thinks the band can better their previous albums with the new effort.
"We still don't think we've delivered our masterpiece, so we're still trying to do it," Martin said. "As long as we feel like that and we're hungry
that's all that matters."
The band have again been working with Brian Eno and Marcus Dravs on the album. "We were with Brian Eno for a long period just messing around," the singer said. "Now we're with Marcus, trying to turn that into something cohesive and under seven hours long. The worst mistake we could make, when we're the most Marmite-y of bands, would be to make a super-long thing".
Coldplay are in the new issue of NME, on UK newsstands now, or available digitally.
The issue previews the 60 most exciting albums of 2011, also featuring The Strokes, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Beady Eye, La Roux, Bombay Bicycle Club, Wild Beasts and 52 other acts, with in-the-studio reports and photos.

The Masterpiece... I definitely hope and I am pretty sure it will be.
Well, There are clear signs that the boys are further expanding their Global dominance with titles like "Princess of China" (Chinese Sleeper Chant, ring a bell !!!)... I am pretty sure it's gonna get bigger, better and the same time intimate.

I think this new album, with it's awesome song titles, will be:
AMAZING
I was going to vote "meh" but then I remembered what happened to me after reading titles like "Lovers in Japan" "Yes" or "Chinese Sleep Chant", which I hated at first, but I ended up loving the songs so I voted "we'll see".

In the next number of NME, around the 15th. But I'm not sure if there will be previews but maybe more details. But I'm really not sure.

Coldplay ‘Still Trying’ for a Masterpiece
Don’t stop believin’.
Chris Martin recently told NME that Coldplay is still hungry for a masterpiece. “We still don’t think we’ve delivered our masterpiece, so we’re still trying to do it. As long as we feel like that and we’re hungry… that’s all that matters,” he said.
It’s a funny thing about masterpieces these days—they’re usually better defined as such in retrospect. Arcade Fire’s “Funeral” was beloved instantly, but more than anything the record heralded the arrival of a band that was sure to change the future landscape of indie rock. It wasn’t until “Neon Bible” and “The Suburbs” came out that “Funeral” really started getting revered as a “masterpiece,” per se.
Same thing with Radiohead—”Ok Computer” rocked the music world as soon as it came out, but as I recall the excitement was at least as much about the future revolution the band was sure to unleash as it was about “Ok Computer” itself. And yes, there are “Kid A” loyalists and “Amnesiac” diehards out there, but when you test the waters for the last couple decades’ “masterpieces,” “Ok Computer” probably beats out almost any other record.
On the other hand, albums that are foretold and heralded as masterpieces immediately upon their release, like Green Day’s “American Idiot,” often end up, well…on Broadway. Not that “American Idiot” isn’t a great record—it is. But the reverence reserved for records like “Funeral” and “Ok Computer”—the thing that makes them real masterpieces—is probably the same thing that precludes “Ok Computer: The Musical” from coming to Broadway.
It may be true that Green Day’s new live DVD “Awesome as Fuck” will indeed be awesome as fuck. But my sense is that real masterpieces aren’t predicted or foretold, but rather earned over time, the same way you recognize your favorite movie by what you want to watch when you’re so sick you can barely think.
Based on the trajectory of their recent material and what kinds of career arcs bands tend to follow, I think it’s actually quite likely that Coldplay has already written their masterpiece: 2002′s “A Rush Of Blood to the Head.” It’s their masterpiece the same way “Siamese Dream” is Smashing Pumpkins’ masterpiece. And they should be proud of it—it’s a pretty great record.
If they do, in fact, put out a new masterpiece, we’ll probably know in about 8-10 years.

'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' i think its sounds like Amsterdam. I don't know why i thought like that :D I saw some news in Turkish web site :
http://www.pastelzarlar.com/index.php/haberler/349-coldplayden-stuedyo-notlar.html
i translated it ;
*they're gonna work with Brian Eno and Markus Davis.
*ten days after last viva la vida tour in wembley, they began work for LP5 with Brian Eno.
*piano sounds will decrease and guitar sounds will increase with Jonny
*they eliminated their songs and there was only 15 songs in their hand. Title of some songs : Hurts Like Heaven, Up With The Birds (can be a duet), Every Teardrop is a Waterfall...
* the band is impressed from Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. And it may be the opening song of he new album. and also Every Teardrop is a Waterfall song title are being seen on the studio's wall with spray. besides, chris are influced from 70s graffitti art in this albüm.
*theme of the albüm is : 'be yourself, express yourself even if it against to anyone and follow your passion'
*title of the album is gonna be two words and start with 'M'
*maybe you reailize that coldplay has a obsession to first letter of the song titles.
Parachutes: 3 x S (Shiver, Spies, Sparks) [Arka Arkaya!]
A Rush of Blood to the Head: 3 x A (A Whisper, A Rush of Blood to the Head, Amsterdam) [Arka Arkaya!]
X & Y: 3 x S (Square One, Speed of Sound, Swallowed in the Sea) + 3 x T (Talk, The Hardest Part, Twisted Logic)
Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends: 3 x L (Life in Technicolor, Lost!, Lovers in Japan)
-first letter of 3 songs may begin with 'u' letter in LP5

I'm undecided. Lovers In Japan is an amazing song, so is Death And All His Friends, both of which I thought sounded like pretty odd titles.
That being said, I can't help harking back to the the days of the raw, emotive distinctly Coldplay titles. Songs like, "Trouble", "Everything's Not Lost", "Don't Panic", "Warning Sign" etc. I can't helping feeling (as they did with Viva) that they are making a concious effort to steer away from old habits with all of these abstract, poetic, vibrant, conceptual - or however you want to describe them - titles.
That being said, music is what counts. Viva was amazing and I have complete faith.

Well to be honest, I have a history of not liking a coldplay album right away, so I get a little nervous with each new album that I wont like it. But in the end I always call myself an idiot for not liking all the songs right away. But I kinda like it that way because I get time to really discover the songs and appreciate them. Hmm maybe this all just makes sense in my head :P
Oh actually I have pattern with each album.
Parachutes: loved it
AROBTTH : did not love it all at first (my favorite now though)
X&Y: loved it right away
Vlv: did not like all of it at first
Next album: by the look of this pattern I will love it :P

I don't know why, but I feel the same :blank: Even though I know that's stupid thinking so, but I'm just afraid I won't like it as the olders :\ Maybe because it's the first time for me I wait for an album of theirs to be released, because I "officially" started to listen to them at the beginning of 2008 and I noticed that Viva was out only in... July, I think, when I found this compilation with a Coldplay song in it which I had never heard, "Violet Hill" :P

I didn't love Parachutes at first, just a few songs... I loved AROBTTH more or less since the start but songs like A Whisper or Daylight... I immediately liked X&Y although it seemed a bit repetitive in sounds at first... When I listened to VLV I was like "What?! It can't be Coldplay!", but I soon loved it... 15-01-2011, 12:53 AM
Every Tear Drop Is A Waterfall does not have to be a love ballad, if you ask me. It could be about disappointment, remorse, pain, regret, loss, and yes even love, but not necessarily cheesy if the sentiment is expressed deeply. The mood could be sorrowful, dark, hopeful, or inspirational, etc. It could be centered around a person, an event, a child, a mother, or even a pet. We will see... I think the possibility is endless. Or it could be shit.

First of all, I am not a Coldplay fan. I used to be.
My favourite Coldplay albums are Parachutes and Viva La Vida. Although I really loved Parachutes I'm beginning to think VLV is actually their best album. Brian Eno and co did an amazing job on working with them to build on their sound. Just listening to Cemeteries of London now, there are a lot of really pretty and interesting sounds going on in the background that I would expect to hear from bands like Radiohead. I'm serious. The songs themselves are not amazing but I think the way they have been recorded makes them so much better. Brian Eno is amazing (although I think he's made this album sound a little too much like U2 than it should...) I think if they had recorded with someone else then this album would have just been another rock album.
and to be honest, I think Death And All Of His Friends might be Coldplay's best songs. Fuck. I really like it.
I dunno, my music taste has matured to a point that I can appreciate different music even if I am not a huge fan of it myself. Alexa has been pretty immature in this thread, so has howyousawtheworld (can't really believe I'm saying that, as I am quite a few years younger than both of them.:P)
Anyway, I hope Coldplay build on the sound they had going on VLV with Eno and others for the new album.
Back on the real topic though, I think most of the song titles are pretty ridiculous. I hope the songs are better....

I thnk Chris Martin is fooling around everyone about what Coldplay has done for LP5 until now. For example, "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" is evidently in the album and it's a precise song.
People, these are the only real facts you must know about the new LP:
a) The album is completely recorded. since December. Band is still choosing the songs amongst those done and presenting them to EMI to make the final tracklisting.
b) The schedule is that Michael H. Brauer and/or Andy Wallace will mix the selected songs around March,
c) The album will be out in May 2011
Take my words for granted, and keep them for the record, whenever these news will be confirmed.

I think locust7 is right. Didn't Chris say in another interview that the album would most likely end with Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall? And then say Hurts Like Heaven is a song in which Jonny "comes out of his cocoon"? This would suggest that the song titles (well some of them anyway) are matched with lyrics/music. Could it have been that this "latest" interview happened before the one from a few weeks ago?

I hope it's true, and I agree with axe about the less is more bit. Even though I loved VLVODAAHF, I think it would be nice if they did a more simple kind of album, (well simple is not the word, sorry, I can't really explain it :disappointed:) I don't mean Parachutes II, but something that does not require so much paraphernalia on stage. I think ideally Coldplay would like to keep their release date as late as can possibly be revealed so to not send the fans and music press on their tip toes because as the biggest selling band in the world today there's bound to be a lot of pressure.
I think they're gonna expand the palette of sounds on LP5. I have really high expectations for this album but I don't think I'll regret it, I'm sure it'll be great. Viva was fantastic for me personally because the sound was so much different from the X&Y era, but still so great and melodic. I like that album best, and I think with every album Coldplay are becoming greater, but every next album seems to be better than the previous effort (even though X&Y was maybe not as good as Rush of Blood for some). I think we're in for some exciting times and great songs.

I was reading some pages of the thread and found a post speaking of Brian Eno and I agree.
I know the competence of Brian Eno, he's a great producer but I honestly think that Coldplay doesn't need him. Look at AROBTTH, look at many many songs, I don't know, they have an inmense capacity to make wonderful works, amazing songs and albuns without a "famous" hand's producer. I love the simplicity of the songs: "Amsterdam, Warning Sign, A Message, Trouble, etc etc etc... I like the VLV album, but I felt a huge "comercial hand of the producer", a huge difference. I like it, obviously, it's a Coldplay album and a great album but I prefear the other 3 than it. I felt the other 3 are more Coldplay. I wanna feel them!
I hope an album with more guitar (they already said), I want an album more agressive. Well, my expectations are the best!

That isn't thruth. They selled AROBTTH and X&Y also about 10 million times!
Except Viva la Vida and Lost, maybe also Lovers in Japan, there isn't any other typical "pop-song" on this album. All the other songs are just like a perfect painting.
I understand if someone say: "ok, I liked the unfinished style of AROBTTH more than the seemingly perfection on VLV" - but don't tell this "Commercial"-stuff, please.

Yes!
This album is just perfect (the music), there are so many little sounds in the background, so many effects, it's so varied. Their is often a perfect transition between two songs...thats just amazing!
But the question is, if the album sounds perfect for the individual person.
But it is fact, that Viva la Vida is the pure perfection of music. Not everyone must like it.

In my opinion, VLV was definitely the most 'commercial' album that they have produced, in the way it was received too. I just feel that it was a bit of a cheese-fest at times. Not as believable and pure and incredible as the first two albums.
Viva La Vida (the song) was also one of the biggest songs in the world when it came out, used on an APPLE advert too........ :uhoh: cannot get more commercial than that. :dozey: bleuuch

I have a bad feeling about it, don't know why. Hope I'm wrong :worried:
I do too :uhoh:. That's usually way less neutral than I'd talk about something that we have yet to hear anything from, but secretly I felt the same way about VLV, and my concern only grew after hearing "Violet Hill," which I really didn't like at first. But in the end, I think that album was a great piece of work and ultimately great, even if when we first got the tracklisting and heard the titles, I was like "OH NO, THESE ARE TERRIBLE, IT MUST MEAN THE ALBUM WILL BE TERRIBLE." Turns out "Strawberry Swing" and "Lovers in Japan," which I thought were probably the worst two titles on the list, ended up being two of my favorite songs on the album. So I'm not going to make calls just based on the titles, even if I find them very worrying-sounding. But..."Every Teardrop is a Waterfall"? "Hurts Like Heaven"? :inquisitive:
I said this earlier today in another venue and got some snide remarks for it, but I'm going to say it again just because: I personally think Coldplay have already made their masterpiece in AROBTHH, like that article suggests. That's just my opinion. I like their first two albums and all the stuff prior to 2003 much better than all the stuff since. That doesn't mean I think X&Y and VLV are shit or that I think they should just give up and stop making music, though. I absolutely love all of their albums, I just think the last two pale when compared to the first two for me personally. I still go nuts for them, though, because I think what they produce is consistently pretty amazing--I just happen to like the vibe of their early stuff most.

The song titles look great, not as good as their previous, but...
The "masterpiece" thing... well, in my opinion, AROBTTH is already their masterpiece and it's REALLY hard that a new album can beat it.
Specially because most of my favorite songs from them are in AROBTTH, like Clocks and In My Place...
Anyway, I don't have a bad feeling about it. I think they changed in VLV, but it wasn't a bad change at all! Maybe if they mix both styles, the "old-Coldplay" style and the VLV style, they'll finally get their masterpiece, pleasing all kinds of coldplayers =D

I have a huge problem with Chris saying 'We're trying to make a masterpiece'. Sure, if Coldplay don't believe that they've created their best work yet, good luck to them. But the great albums aren't usually intended to be the great albums. Radiohead wouldn't have said 'Okay, we've made two pretty decent albums that have sold and rated pretty damned well, but now let's make an album that's considered to be one of the greatest rock albums of ALL TIMEE!' The same goes for The Beatles with Sgt Pepper's, Abbey Road, etc., nor did Green Day with Dookie or American Idiot. Masterpieces come out of creativity; music comes from the heart. Not trying to go down in history.
Anyway, I hope Coldplay build on the sound they had going on VLV with Eno and others for the new album.
I disagree. The thing about Coldplay that make them seem better than most bands out there is that none of their albums sound the same; each album has its own distinct sound. Listen to AROBBTH, then listen to Viva... two very different albums. I don't want an album that sounds the same as another... I want it to be unique.

well, Chris actually said "our masterpiece" which i think significantly differs from just "a masterpiece." they're not necessarily trying to make "one of the greatest rock albums of ALL TIMEE!," or even trying to be better than anyone else, they just want to do the best work they can by their own standards.
of course, i keep saying 'they' and i suppose technically i should just say 'Chris' since he is usually the one saying all that stuff about being "hungry" and wanting to improve all the time. :P

I don't think he means to say that the next album is going to be a masterpiece, the only thing he's saying is that they still have the motivation and the drive to go on, they don't feel like they've already accomplished everything yet so they still have the drive to try to make better things. In that way, Coldplay is always trying to make a masterpiece, they did when they started and they will after this, and I'm certain they'll never feel like they've did it.
And I'm pretty sure that other bands have the same thing going; wanting to make the best music and do better than before. Because if you don't want that, where is the reason to keep making music?
And I don't see how this comment leads you to think that Coldplay is just trying to go down in history with this next album instead of being creative and making music from their hearts, because that's just not Coldplay. They always talk about creativity and how the best songs come from nowhere and how they try to make what they love.
And besides that, Chris says a lot of things, and we shouldn't take it all to seriously, he'd be scared by how seriously we take every word he says, because it's not like he thinks it all through, he's in an interview and just says what comes up and probably doesn't agree with himself anymore afterwards half the time.

That's a good point... I think I just misread it or analyse it to mean that they're trying to make a masterpiece rather than their masterpiece.
Nonetheless, they should be trying to make music that comes from the heart, rather than music that sells records. I know that's an incredibly biased thing to say, as any band that tries to 'make it' is trying to sell as many records as is humanly possible. It just seems that Chris is trying more than ever to sell records rather than make music, which to me is not what Coldplay is about. I dunno... that's just me, maybe ;)

I'm not worried by those song titles at all really. I wasn't a fan before viva because I didn't really know them before that, but I'm sure I would've found Strawberry Swing a lame name on it's own, and a lot more probably, also Cemeteries of London and Death and all of his Friends sound way to 'goth' and dark on their own. But song titles only get meaning with the songs, I love those names now and feel like they're brilliant names, but that's because they really fit with the songs. So yeah song names say completely nothing about the music.
For me personally, I trust Coldplay and I 'know' them well enough to be certain that they'll be true to themselves and won't release anything they're not very excited about. And I'm very certain that if they're very excited about it that I'll like it. It might sound stupid, but it's like when a very good friend recommends something and you're certain you'll like it because you simply like the same kind of things. So I really feel no worries at all, just excitement and curiosity.

I honestly think they'll purely try to make the music they find best and they won't compromise that for the sake of having a greater amount of people to like it. If it happens to be mainstream than it's mainstream, if it happens to be heavy metal it's heavy metal () but it being something is just a coincidental consequence of them trying to make the perfect music.

It also kind of works with their art/graffiti concept where a "masterpiece" could be a description of ones feeling of a piece of artwork. This is probably really far off but its late so give me a break :)

That's true. Isn't LP5 the longest recording in their history? It suppose to be released in December of 2009 (and Christmas Lights definitely from "initial version" of LP5), and they spent another year to re-write and polish it. It should be good. At least.
Btw I don't like Christmas Lights, it sounds like VLV follower in a bad meaning.

If they call LP5 Masterpiece, they/Chris can forget about ever having a nice word said about them in press ever again! I mean, Chris already has the erroneous reputation of being a self-centered, cocky douche, so a name like that would just confirm all the haters' suspicions :P. I agree and disagree. I don't think any of them are intentionally making music that sells the most records, I don't think their popularity is anywhere on their goals list. But I do think that because they've found themselves so massively popular since 2005 or so, it's had an effect on what they produce. Since becoming celebrities (or one celebrity, I guess), I think they've had more factors to consider when writing music and putting together albums and putting on concerts and making videos. I guess fame changes people and things inevitably, but I guess I feel like the massive commercial success has made them evolve very quickly. If they'd continued to be mildly popular like they were in 2002-03ish rather than exploding into what they are now, I wonder if they still would have come out with X&Y and VLV in the same way.
I didn't word any of that as nicely as I would have liked, so I'm expecting to get attacked now
