Back on topic however, I feel my listen is going to be a really strong one. The kind where the album placed fifteenth is easily as good as the album placed sixth. It's really just a matter of preference.

THIS. i am really really struggling. top 5 is pretty clear. but the next 10 to 15 is a bit of a mess.

Gah. Regretting the Dec 1 cutoff date already (as necessary as it may be).

Tron Legacy soundtrack. Daft Punk. Oh. My. Goodness. :dead:
The saddest part is that the really brilliant things about it are so subtle that I think most people are going to totally miss what they were doing with it. Most people are just complaining it's a soundtrack not a dance album. (Uh, duh?) Top ten best soundtracks I've ever heard. I am in awe.

I guess I'll have to make a note for next year when it is eligible.

New lists. Thanks. I'll get them posted first chance after school stuff tomorrow.

there are 25 albums on my list now :cheesy:

I think it's not the best albums anyway, it's about the music I enjoy most

it was fun, now I'll give some albums a few more listens and that's it :D

ewww mixtapes. listen to albums only peoples! it's how music is meant to be.

Whaaaaa? Since when is music meant to be a specific way? Music is subjective. You shouldn't throw around restrictions like that.

But mixtapes are fun! :snobby:
Are you saying you don't ever listen to music on shuffle because they're not in album order like they should be?
:P

Making mixtapes is my favorite thing to do for other people. It gives people a better glimpse of who I am, and it helps introduce them to things they might not have otherwise been exposed to. I made a mixtape for a friend of mine, and because of it, he is now a huge fan of Fleet Foxes, and today, he ended up sharing them with another friend of mine.

See, this is why mixtapes are awesome.

WAITWAIT, WHAT? :freak:

Yeah, you read right. I'm loving her so much right now. "The Brothel" (the song) has been my current favorite song for the past three days. I decided to look into her Tuesday after finding the YouTube link you posted for "Father Father" in the "songs you're obsessed with" thread. Thank you, Will. She is great.

nup never touched the shuffle button. i listen to the radio a fair bit so thats the closest i get to "shuffle"

to me an album is like a movie. it doesnt quite make sense if you experience it in a random order.

Well, how I listen to music depends on the setting. If I'm working on something on the computer, I have to put it on shuffle. I get completely distracted when listening to albums all the way through in that case. If I have a craving for certain songs from different albums, then I listen to those. I do have times when I listen to the albums all the way through, though.

ewww mixtapes. listen to albums only peoples! it's how music is meant to be.

I don't really understand this. Most music is written one song at a time. Each song is recorded separately and written separately. Then they are put in order for an album. I think it's cool to sort of make our own albums out of different bands songs.

a good album has its songs in a particular order and a lot of the time a good tracklisting can make or break an album. an ordinary album is nothing more than a collection of songs with no coherence or flow and i think thats what separates a great artist/band from the rest. anyone can write a decent song or two but only the truly gifted can write an album.

just for the record, i would attribute my passion for music to Pink Floyd, who (i might be wrong here) actually sued itunes because they didnt want their music sold as individual tracks on itunes as they believed that their fans should only enjoy their music as they intended, that is as full albums and ive always prescribed to that belief.

haha very funny mate

and i agree with you there is no harm in listening to single songs. i spend hours and hours every day listening to the radio so it would be quite hypocritical of me to say otherwise.

and i didnt know making a mixtape involves any musical talent or skill :P

It's not that I don't pay attention. I have trouble deciding the order of things. This is why I have yet to actually post a list. :bigcry: I'm actually further than I usually get when I do this, though, as I have a shortlist. This is the first year that I'm actually attempting something like this, so maybe that's also a bit of a problem.

This is the first year that I'm actually attempting something like this, so maybe that's also a bit of a problem. Why not post your shortlist and then play around with the order later?

The way I usually come up with an order is to split my shortlist into 3 categories: top middle and bottom. I may have trouble coming up with a spot for an album, but I don't have such a problem saying this one definitely deserves to be in the top group, this one I don't care about so much, it belongs in the bottom group. Then I don't worry about the significance of it's exact position so much as long as it's part of the right group.

...if that made sense... :uhoh:

I really enjoy reading coldplayers lists, moreso than the critcs (except maybe pitchfork) because you can actually talk about there choices and no one here has their reputation on the line to look really indie or sophisticated like the magazines, they make actual choices on decent music that they really enjoyed. Some of the lists also need to be updated on the first page.

EDIT: I still am waiting for your list briggins!

Why couldn't we be influenced by reviews? That's what they are made for.
I can't listen to every album so yeah I'm reading reviews to find good stuff. But that's doesn't mean I love what they love and I if it's the case why should we justify our choise? This is just a way to find new musics.

The Escapist
13-12-2010, 08:06 AM
Critics are people you go to hate and you got to love. They can help you a lot with discovery but they also mean you miss out on a lot of stuff. I believe in listening to music that you yourself love, not someone else. It's got to mean something to you, even if its not much at all. As long as that is always the case, I believe you are fine. It's when you start to listen to music because someone else does and for that reason only is something not right.

loudefix
13-12-2010, 08:23 AM
I totally agree with you. Read reviews is one way among others to discover new music but it can't be the only one.

Nothing wrong with reviews as long as you're capable of forming your own opinion in spite of them. I like reading reviews and they are very helpful at drawing my attention to things I wouldn't have noticed. But then if I like something the critics are savaging it takes effort to trust my own instincts an tune them out.

The one thing that bugs me are the tiny subsection of hipster-wannabes who only like what they're told to like whether they actually get it or not, and then try to force it on everyone else, often by dissing other's tastes. It died down with the hipster backlash, but I've seen too much of it in real life to have much patience with that attitude anymore.

Can I include Adam and Joe Song Wars volume 2?Can't find enough info at a glance. I'll look it up in more detail after the weekend when I can breathe again.

Pop Crimes was a brilliant record but was released in 2009.

It's true Deaths friend. Late 2009 (october).
Too many releases (out from october 'til dec) don't reach sufficient visibility to be appreciated from the audience (and then, voted as AoTY) in 1, three months.
In that case I loved to celebrate a such important australian artist.

i did listen to their debut. Wasn't the biggest fan of it, much prefer Contra.

I was a little surprised I ended up putting the album so high because it hasn't been an album that I've obsessed over this year. But at the same time I enjoy it every time I do listen to it. There aren't any dull or weak moments in it. I also find its a pretty good summary of the alternative indie scene all packed in one album. The sounds of Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, etc. are all there while also paying homage to the past (Paul Simon).

Yeah my last list was a kind of shortlist. They're still in my top 10, I just value the uniqueness of the albums 1-9 so much more. Plus I had more of a serious think about my top 10! Two Door's record is more of an LP of great singles, rather than having the full flow of an album. I had to get out of a serious Two Door obsession phase to realise!

Hmm, it's kind of disappointing not to see LCD on more lists....one of the few artists that has consistently put out top quality material over 3 consecutive albums nowadays.

Also, am I the only one who thought the new Deerhunter was kind of overrated? Don't get me wrong it's a good album (which is apparent by my inclusion of it on the list), but I was surprised how well received it was by critics and pitchfork had it at #3 on their year-end list. I thought it was just more of the same (which isn't a bad thing considering their previous stuff) with a few changes/tinkering here and there, but certainly it's nothing earth-shattering.

much like kanye, it isnt the type of music that is popular on here. personally i think it is the best album released since radiohead's in rainbows and best of LCD's 3 and thats saying something.

haha, I love that album. One of my favourite albums of the past few years.

I agree about Deerhunter. I gave it a pretty average position in my list because that is how much i liked it. More accessable and straight forward than microcastles, but not ground breaking.

I'm surprised at 'Surfing The Void' featuring in many lists. I was extremely disappointed by it!I loooove it. The title track is now my go-to song when I want something completely insane to play very loudly. Good stress buster. And I love all the little new wave influences creeping in to other tracks. It's a very interesting album- I certainly haven't gotten bored of it. Or else I'm just weird.

I just wish I knew what had happened to my CD of it- I thought I lost it down behind my desk but I can't find it there. It's been missing for a couple of months now. And I'm usually really good at keeping track of all my cds, even when they end up in piles all over the place. :(

Hope it's not too late, but here is my list anyway Not too late, that's what extentions are for. :D But I have been horrible neglectful of just about everything in my entire life except for school I'm afraid. Time to play catch-up. :embarrassed: And to get some lists up.

Hmm, it's kind of disappointing not to see LCD on more lists....one of the few artists that has consistently put out top quality material over 3 consecutive albums nowadays.

Also, am I the only one who thought the new Deerhunter was kind of overrated?Yes. This is Happening seemed like an oddly quiet release to me considering how anticipated it was. But a great album though. Yet I still prefer Sound of Silver by a long shot. I haven't actually listened to the new one all that much since I got it.

Not really familiar with Deerhunter. Couldn't get into them.:shrug:

^Because this is a British-based international board, and it's easy to hear international releases these days, the rule is that the official release date for these lists is whichever of the two came first: the British release date or the American release date.

Since Sigh No More's first UK/US release date was October 2009, and it was a very popular entry on the 2009 list (#20), it is considered a 2009 album.

Hope that clears it up. :)

What I meant was that my blog derives it's name from the most beautiful song ever (i.e. after Fix You)... Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah.

The lyrics contains this line "Well, I heard there was a secret chord, Where David played and pleased the lord but you don't really care for music...."

This is for everyone who hasn't heard the song "Hallelujah". GO LISTEN !!!. It's awesome. And while you're downloading or listening to it, check out my blog too. (Sorry, For the stupid publicity of sorts).

The cutoff date has always been mid-December, so The Fix being released Dec 25th wouldn't have counted if it was any other year either. The poll just had to go a little late this year.

Because in the past early December was such a fuzzy complicated time, being eligible for two years, I decided to reduce confusion once and for all, and set a hard cutoff date of December 1st. The idea is to give all those end-of-year slow-burners a chance to actually get a following and make next year's list. If I let you vote for the fix now, it would get a grand total of one vote. Since it's eligible for next year's list, it might get several votes once people are more aware of it. That's the thinking.

Also, you forgot Katy Parry on your list. :P

Oh my gosh. I did it. I actually made a list. :freak:

I'm not sure if it's exactly numbered the way I want it, but I'm pretty sure these are the albums I want, and the albums are generally around the area I want to place them. I wouldn't have much time to make edits, anyway, so it may stay the way it is simply due to time. This was incredibly hard for me. :dead:

Anyway, here it is:

1. "High Violet"-The National
2. "The Suburbs"-Arcade Fire
3. "The Courage of Others"-Midlake
4. "Go"-Jónsi
5. "Happiness"-Hurts
6. "The Brothel"-Susanne Sundfør
7. "The Age of Adz"-Sufjan Stevens
8. "Tourist History"-Two Door Cinema Club
9. "Heartland"-Owen Pallett
10. "Hands All Over"-Maroon 5
11. "Immersion"-Pendulum
12. "The ArchAndroid (Suites II & III)"-Janelle Monáe
13. "Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor"-Caro Emerald
14. "Acolyte"-Delphic
15. "Plastic Beach"-Gorillaz
16. "Wolves and Thieves"-Goldheart Assembly
17. "Beachcomber's Windowsill"-Stornoway

Have a good dayIf it's any consolation, it's really, really killing me that I can't put the Tron Legacy soundtrack on my list since it came out in December. :mean: I think in terms of the history of electronic music it's something really special and significant and I like listening to it too. Yes, it will be hard to remember it for next year's list. BUT (*sigh*) it WILL be eligible for next years list and unless there is a torrent of other more significant albums, it will show up on next years list. :sweatdrop:

Here is my official list for Coldplaying. It is a little different than my usual list since I put it more in order of how I want to get those album points. For example I loved Hannah Georgas' album, but nobody else will have it in their lists, so I took it out and instead would like a band like Foals get those points if that makes sense.Funny, I usually do the opposite- if there's a little album I really love I'll bump it up a few places in the hopes of helping it make the top 50.

10 These New Puritans Hidden
11 Wolf Parade Expo 86
12 I Am Kloot Sky at Night
13 Grasscut 1 Inch/1/2 Mile
14 Fyfe Dangerfield Fly Yellow Moon
15 Efterklang Magic Chairs
16 Ed Harcourt Lustre
17 Midlake The Courage Of Others
18 BT These Hopeful Machines
19 Bonobo Black Sands
20 Aqualung Magnetic North

Although I would now place Let The Hard Times Roll a bit higher, such a beautiful album.

Thanks, but does that mean you still aren't going to let it count?

Hey, I Am Kloot's... I was going to listen to that one and never got a chance. *sigh*

...But yeah, what I don't understand is that I changed the cutoff date quite a while ago and there were no objections at all. If there had been then I would have reconsidered then, but by now most people have finalized their lists for this year so a sudden change back wouldn't be fair.

Use my comic 5-album list for my main list, it's not like my proper list will change anything

You didn't like Swim?

Not really. And I feel like Four Tet's album should be the one high in a lot of peoples lists. I thought it was a far better album. (they're in the same kind of field, right?)

^Yeah they are in the same field. I still think Swim was better but there wasn't much between them.
