Coldplay planning New Year's Eve concert in Las Vegas with Jay-Z

Coldplay and Jay-Z have reportedly agreed a multi-million dollar deal to play a concert together on New Year's Eve (31.12.10), at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas resort to see in 2011.

The event is being organised by celebrity party planner Colin Cowie and will be invite only with no tickets being put on general sale to the public. The show will see Jay Z and Chris Martin’s Coldplay perform separately and then together in a mash-up performance.

Guests will be treated to separate sets from Coldplay and Jay-Z before the two acts take to the stage together. Beyonce Knowles is also said to be planning to perform in Las Vegas on the same night so she can be with her husband to celebrate the landmark date.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "Organizers have spent millions securing the acts. The word is that Beyonce is now looking for a Vegas New Year's gig so she will be in town with Jay."

Jay-Z and Coldplay have collaborated before on the track 'Lost +' which featured on the band's EP 'Prospekt's March'. The two acts performed the track together at the 2009 Grammy Awards and have toured together.

Chris and Jay-Z are also good friends with the rap star recently revealing the 'Yellow' singer's children, Apple and Moses, call him "Uncle Jay".

Jay-Z: Coldplay's Chris Martin like a 'brother from another mother'

It's traditional to spend New Year with friends and family and Jay-Z gets to do both this year - and gets paid for it - by performing in Las Vegas with Coldplay.

The US rapper has told Newsbeat that Coldplay's Chris Martin is his "brother from another mother," and admits he sees him as often as possible. "I see him more than my own brother," he admitted. "Actually, I do!"

Coldplay and Jay Z will play separate gigs, plus a joint performance, on 31 December at the new Cosmopolitan casino and resort in Las Vegas. The luxury complex is rumoured to have cost £2.5bn and only opened a few weeks ago with an ceremony that featured Killers frontman Brandon Flowers. The invitation-only New Year's event is sold out, and while Jay-Z admits the show is expensive he also says it'll be relatively intimate.

The lucky few in the audience will no doubt be keen to see Jay-Z and Chris Martin perform a track or two together. Luckily the pair have history. In 2006 they collaborated on the rapper's track Beach Chair, and again in 2008 for the Coldplay song Lost. They have also performed live together several times - in London, at the 2009 Grammy Awards, and at a gig to open the New York Yankees' stadium in September.

The hip hop mogul is also upbeat about the chances of recording a new collaboration with Chris Martin: "If he'll allow me", he told Newsbeat. The rapper called the British singer-songwriter "one of the geniuses of our generation."

"Any time you can collaborate with that sort of genius, you jump at the chance, I don't care who you are."

However, another duet with wife Beyonce could be different matter. It's been a while since Bonnie & Clyde reached number two in the UK chart in 2002, and Jay-Z says another hook-up could still be a long way off. "I don't think she'll allow me," Jay-Z admitted. "But we'll see! It's her music, it's always the person's choice. You can't just turn up at their door and say 'I want to be on track four'. Otherwise I would've been at Bono's house!"

Gwyneth Paltrow has rubbished rumours suggesting she would perform with Coldplay at a lavish New Year's Eve event in Las Vegas.

The Oscar-winning actress's husband Chris Martin and his band are reputed to have been paid $1 million to play at the Cosmopolitan hotel's end of year celebrations.

Gwyneth Paltrow won't be duetting with Chris Martin (PA)
A report in a US newspaper suggested the luxury hotel's guests may be treated to an added bonus in the form of an appearance onstage by Gwyneth.
However, her spokesman has now said: 'There's absolutely no truth (to the rumour).'
Gwyneth has made a move into the music world during 2010, recording tracks with the cast of Glee and for the soundtrack album of her movie Country Strong.

Fans who had hoped to get a rare glimpse of Gwyneth and Chris performing together will be disappointed, although the rest of the Cosmopolitan's bill should more than compensate for that.
Jay-Z is scheduled to play a solo set and then perform alongside Coldplay in front of 2,500 guests at the New Year's Eve party, which is rumoured to be costing the hotel $25 million to stage.

Jay-Z and Coldplay plan to share the stage in Las Vegas as New Year's Eve headliners at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas casino-resort.

Cosmopolitan officials said Monday that the music superstars would also play solo sets with the performances broadcast on the hotel's 65-foot marquee overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.

The Cosmopolitan says the concert is part of a three-day invitation-only celebration roughly two weeks after the resort opens. The $3.9 billion resort owned by Deutsche Bank is scheduled to open Dec. 15.

Cosmopolitan officials say the New Year's Eve weekend will also include a surprise performance on the resort's pool deck, which overlooks Las Vegas Boulevard.

I guess it's not so much of a private show anymore then. Honestly they should just sell tickets to the public. SO many people (including myself) would want to go to this. Which I am, by the way. Even though I'll only get to see CP on some screen. I need my fix!

I don't feel like they are betraying me at all, or that they are "selling out", there could also be a hundred different reasons they are doing this show, like
1. They enjoy what they do and it's an opportunity to ring in the new year with friends, family, and let loose, plus get exposure, and make some money while doing it. I see nothing wrong with it.

i just saw another article about this and it says that Chris Martin is performing, not Coldplay..

(AllHipHop News) Jay-Z has inked a deal worth millions of dollars, to perform at a swanky bash to celebrate the opening of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on New Years Eve.

The New York Post reports that lavish party is being planned by party planner Colin Cowie, who has also booked Coldplay's Chris Martin to perform at the invite-only event.

Jay-Z will deliver his own set, as will Chris Martin. The pair will then take to the stage together to thrill the guests with mashup performance of their best known hits.

According to the Post, Jay-Z's wife Beyonce is also in the process of securing a performance in Las Vegas on New Years Eve, so the married couple can celebrate the holiday together.

I agree too. So what if they do it and even if it's for some money. They give their fans so much for free like CD's after concerts, they do charity gigs, put lots of stuff on their website for fans like Christmas messages, not to mention all the amazing charity stuff they do and never make a public fuss about. Let them have fun doing a gig with friends and make some money. Who knows, some of that money might be funding something important like their studio or the next freebie for us. And if it's not and just going into their pockets for their families then good for them too.

And if it's not and just going into their pockets for their families then good for them too.
Totally agree!

As a band they "Cater" to the Fans a great deal, with a great website, roadie updates, behind the scene footage, they try and make their fans apart of them as best they can, so compared to other bands I feel "Catered" to. WHAT! No Christmas messages anymore! Well screw them - they should never earn a penny from now on. That's it. I hate them. Selfish people! :P

Seriously though, they give 10% of their earning to charity and have done since the beginning even before they started earning millions. They do charity gigs and not that long ago they donated £1 million to Kids Company to help underrprivilaged kids. After all that surely we can't begrudge them doing a one-off gig for cash, whatever they want to spend it on. Chances are 10% of the money earned from that gig will benefit their charities so good for them if the bank the rest of it. I can't begrudge a band that does so much good with their money.

As for Muse, it's great they do lots for their fans too, but it's not a competition! :)

End of day, most bands play corporate gigs and this is not Coldplays first. Usually you never hear about it. It is a way, to secure extra income for a few hours work. Let me assure you as someone who has been to several of these corporate gigs, they are pretty dull affairs where mostly everyone sits and politely claps. You aren't missing much. If you could attend, you will stood with 30-something bankers and high rollers you will be more concerned with checking their blackberries and iphones.

BTW For those slagging off playing Vegas, it is pretty lame. Some of us live here and have normal lives, in a varied multi-cultural city with some of the most diverse natural landscape anywhere in the world. It is not all about the Strip! Those early comments were pretty ignorant and prejudiced.
Besides every time Chris has played Vegas, he always like to joke that in 10 years he will be headline at the local cabaret and hopes we will still come along.

There are not any tickets. It is a guest list, so no chance of seeing tickets on ebay or craigslist. It is an invite event-if your name isn't on the list then you aren't getting in. Unfortunately no, if I remember correctly the description of that lot said they still stunk. So that would be stench from 1) storage, and 2) mud. Eeew. I don't even want to think about that stench, and it's not like you'd want to clean it off since that would be part of the "nostalgia" (or something like that). I think part of the problem is that this gig is exclusively private, but then the resort putting on the show is saying 'well you can watch it outside on a big screen'. So there is a public teasing, but also a firm you can't get in. Plebs can stand outside and watch a screen, but the elite can see it up close and personal.
I think that is the only questionable element for many, because Coldplay have played lots of private corporate gigs-I saw Chris Martin play 5 songs at one. For the most part most of us never hear about these things, but they are an essential part of a artists life-they have to please record companies, sponsors, radio/tv. It is part of the corporate culture. EMI is owned by Terra Firma Capital and many of EMI's artists play private gigs for Terra Firma.

Like I said in the other thread, this best be a rumour. Otherwise I don't know what they're playing at.

Playing private gigs for rich people to make themselves richer....not good.

As it's a fund raiser for charities then it's pretty cool they're doing this. Lots of fundraising events take place in the US for alltrusitic reasons with rich people (I remember Stehpen Fry being guest speaker at one in Texas for example). The US has quite a strong tradition of the very wealthy doing a lot for charity with events such as this, which we don't have on anywhere near the same scale in the UK.

If I now booked flights to Las Vegas, I'd probably have no luck getting tickets as I would have had with the Newcastle show... And it'd be even more expensive... Couldn't I just win a pair of tickets including flights and accomodation? :D

Gwyneth Paltrow 'to sing at New Year'

Gwyneth Paltrow is reportedly set to join her husband Chris Martin on stage for a lavish New Year’s Eve party.

The actress has been showing off her vocal skills recently after playing a singer in new movie Country Strong and has revealed she would consider releasing an album. Gwyneth’s spouse Chris is the frontman of British alternative rock group Coldplay, who have recently been working on their new album.

It has been claimed Gwyneth and Coldplay will perform at the launch of new hotel The Cosmopolitan, in Las Vegas, on December 31, and could be paid up to $1 million each.

"To my knowledge, this is the biggest spend on New Year's Eve - $25 million over the weekend for 4,000 guests," Andrew Fox, CEO of newyearseve.com, which sells event tickets, told New York Post.

It appears Gwyneth and Coldplay won’t be the only high-profile acts on the bill. Hip-hop star Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé Knowles – who are close friends with Gwyneth and Chris – are also rumoured to be performing at the extravagant opening.

However, a spokesperson for the hotel insists the acts are yet to be announced and has denied the concert is set to break records. "Gwyneth and Beyoncé are not confirmed for any kind of performance at this point. It would be incorrect to use the number $25 million," The Cosmopolitan representative added.

Each act will also play solo sets, with performances broadcast on the hotel’s 65-foot marquee overlooking the Strip.

Gwyneth Paltrow won't perform with Coldplay in Las Vegas

""brother from another mother,.......""
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/12061284

Hi dude!:D

Jay-Z 'taking 50 rooms for his entourage for Vegas hotel opening'

Rapper Jay-Z is apparently booking 50 rooms for the lavish opening of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

According to a source, the star - who's performing at the event along with Coldplay on New Year's Eve - has "requested the rooms for his entourage and for his personal security".

As a result, hotel managers have had to rearrange accommodations for other important guests at the bash, produced by celebrity event designer Colin Cowie.

Celebs expected include Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Wahlberg, Kristin Davis, Ellen Pompeo, Kellan Lutz, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Olivia Munn, Emmy Rossum, Jessica Szohr, Mark Salling and Selita Ebanks.

Neither Jay's rep nor any of hotel spokesmen have disclosed the detail.

"We are looking forward to welcoming Jay-Z to the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, and as is our policy, we don't disclose details regarding a guest's accommodations or other arrangements while at the resort," the New York Post quoted a hotel rep as saying. (ANI)

Well said. Nobody should begrudge the band this, particularly after all the money they raised for charity through the Crisis gigs.
I will never be a big fan of Jay-Z's music, because it's not really my "thang", but I do respect what he does after seeing him support Coldplay at Wembley, as he definitely knew how to work the crowd.;)
If Chris likes Jay-Z, you can be pretty sure the guy isn't an a*hole, anyway.

Midnight Madness: Valley venues offer plenty of events to help ring in the new year

The Las Vegas New Year's Eve party used to be inside, and then it moved outdoors. Now technology and the dawn of a new decade bring the inside out, with a new sense of equality.

If you didn't pony up $5,600 per couple to see Coldplay and Jay-Z when you still could buy in, clip a six-pack to your belt. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will use its 65-foot digital sign to broadcast the night's biggest show to the crowds who gather outdoors on the Strip.

"This is a really special moment for The Cosmopolitan, and I think we really want to celebrate that," says Lisa Marchese, who oversees brand marketing for the freshly minted hotel. "I think we have one opportunity to really introduce ourselves to Las Vegas."

This technological bridge is a fitting cap to a decade that charted the rise of the nightclubs in direct correlation to the fall of ticketed concerts and ballroom dinner-dance affairs, which were the Strip's main attraction to the very end of the 1990s.

Today's countdown also marks a full decade of the free fireworks that began in 2000, after Las Vegas came off as a big fizzle in worldwide coverage of the "millennium" celebrations of 1999.

It seemed to help. About 310,000 are expected this year, compared with 260,000 for the 1999 party (which, it must be noted, also was hampered by price gouging and "Y2K bug" concerns).

Once the free fireworks took over, concert headliners accustomed to being the center of attention for midnight countdowns were surprised to see people head for the exits as the midnight hour approached.

Even big stars who just might be in the neighborhood and willing to risk rejection -- say, Jay-Z's spouse Beyonce -- have learned they're more appreciated other times of the year.

"We didn't need her New Year's," Wynn Las Vegas chairman Steve Wynn says of his declining an offer by Beyonce's management to perform today.

"I want Beyonce at an off-peak time, so I can make an event out of it," Wynn says. "When we had her in the summer (of 2009), I picked the worst week of the summer, and she blew the lid off the place. All my customers came, and we had huge casino activity."

Today, they are here anyway. And they always have been on Dec. 31, whatever the year. In the pre-fireworks era, Las Vegas specialized in arena concerts (including, presciently, both Cher and Bette Midler in 1999) and dinner-show combos for older customers: As late as 1999, it was Wayne Newton in the Stardust showroom and the Guy Lombardo Orchestra in the ballroom.

In the past decade, players club marketing has become so refined that shows in that realm mostly have become parties for invited customers.

Nightclubs still were an emerging force in 2000. Now they rule the roost and offer their own star power. Rihanna may or may not actually sing at Pure -- club officials are giving her the option -- while Kim Kardashian probably should be encouraged not to croon at Tao (see Sounds for a rundown on nightclub attractions).

Here's how more of the madness breaks down:

Pyrotechnics

"America's Party 2011" is again a synchronized show by Fireworks By Grucci, offering 50,000 effects in eight minutes.

The launch points are the rooftops of the same casinos as last year: MGM Grand, Planet Hollywood Resort, Aria, Caesars Palace, The Venetian, Treasure Island and Stratosphere.

Las Vegas police announced Tuesday that the Strip, between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road, will close to vehicular traffic at 6:30 p.m. today.

Coldplay and Jay-Z

It seems an unlikely alliance, the American hip-hop mogul and the British soft-rock heartthrobs of suburban soccer moms. But these two have a history.

Coldplay singer Chris Martin guested on "Beach Chair" on Jay-Z's "Kingdom Come" album. The band in turn hosted him on an alternate version of the song "Lost" in 2008, and they performed it together on the Grammy Awards the next year.

"Launching a new brand, opening a new property at the center of the Strip is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I think John (Unwin, the hotel's CEO) treats it as such," The Cosmopolitan's Marchese said of an event mostly for invited guests, and therefore not expected to pencil out beyond its publicity value.

However, showing the concert to the huddled masses on the casino's 65-foot digital marquee is something "I think you'll see over the next year we're going to do a lot. As much as possible really," she added.

Oddly enough, of the two celebrity spouses, it's Martin's wife, Gwyneth Paltrow -- not Beyonce -- who is rumored on the ever-reliable Internet to be joining the show.

Specifics were vague on the concert's start time -- maybe 10 p.m., maybe 10:30 p.m. -- and whether it will include a New Year's countdown from the Chelsea ballroom, which occasionally will be converted into a concert venue during the new year.

TV Party

"New Year's Eve Live" on Fox returns to Mandalay Bay's pool area and outdoor stage, making it more visible to home couch potatoes than to the thundering herds on the Strip.

While other networks focus their late-night coverage on Times Square in New York City, Fox stays in Las Vegas except for about five minutes of the New York countdown.

"We don't want to miss that, we just want to provide an alternative," producer Bob Bain says of the broadcast that instead offers performances by Plain White Ts, Travie McCoy, David Archuleta and Las Vegas's own Jabbawockeez. Nancy O'Dell hosts, while Brandy serves as the correspondent in the street.

"A lot of people will claim that New Year's Eve programming is wallpaper," Bain says. "That's why we like it to be fairly heavy music-centric, so it doesn't require quite as much focus" to serve as the background in house parties.

The show is timed for the East Coast, so it goes off at 8 p.m. here (though it will be tape-delayed to run at 11 p.m. on KVVU-TV, Channel 5). "That doesn't seem to dampen the spirits of any of the participants," Bain notes.

Those who want to be part of the live audience can line up at 6 p.m. at the main beach entrance or the side entrance by the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Those who buy into Mandalay Bay's $75 "Block Party" can use their drink tickets at the beach party.

Fremont Street faux

The canopy over Glitter Gulch hosts "Tribute Palooza," which also continues Saturday and Sunday for those who welcome a second chance to see impersonator bands including Fan Halen, Red Not Chili Peppers, Aeromyth, Led Zepagain and -- ready for this? -- Green Date. Tickets start at $20 and include both real and "virtual" fireworks.

Hot tickets

Concerts haven't completely abandoned the big night. The notables include rocking with 30 Seconds to Mars at the Palms (see The Last Word), or crunking it with Puerto Rican rapper Pitbull at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay.

The thin lines between "performing" and "hosting" in the clubs can be confusing. The Crown Theater at the Rio, for example, guarantees that comedian Eddie Griffin will say some funny stuff, but not that co-host Ashanti will sing.

Of course, Vegas has shows every day. Some of the resident titles adapt with a twist, such as Cirque du Soleil offering 4 p.m. matinees of "Viva Elvis" at Aria, "O" at Bellagio, and 4:30 p.m. runs of "Mystere" at Treasure Island, "Ka" at the MGM Grand, "Believe" at Luxor and "Love" at The Mirage. The "Zumanity" cast will actually party with you at the "Bridge Bash" in front of New York-New York, but don't expect it to break out into an orgy.

In the burbs

Youth might dominate the Strip, but the suburbs open the party to the young at heart, with the Society of Seven at the Cannery and Kool & the Gang leading the "Celebration" at the Eastside Cannery.

Station Casinos mostly holds sway with its year-round regulars. Lon Bronson's All-Star Band is a guaranteed party in the Ovation club at Green Valley Ranch. Sin City Sinners at Sunset Station and Yellow Brick Road at Boulder Station also have loyal regulars happy to put on silly hats for just such an occasion.

i think this will be an absurd concert. how many rich people memorize all Coldplay songs and sing them with Chris??? i wish both coldplay and jay-z shouldn't give a concert to rich people. look at the antinomy between two concerts : in 19.12.2010 crisis gigs for homeless people,31.12.2011 for rich people...

:dozey:And if the show was to be for charity ?
Could any of us pay $7500 a seat to go ?
Think of the amount those 'rich folk' can raise for a charity.
THAT'S absurd !

Roll on Coldplay, Viva, Las Vegas !:elvis::clap::awesome:

I'm so sad they are in Vegas and this will be the first time in 5 years that I haven't seen them while they were here! Gonna be a cold night tonight, so everyone that is going down there, be sure to dress warmly.

Not sure what the issue is with money for some people here...would anybody of us if you were offered money for your dayjob - say no thank you?

Just because apparently they have enough doesn't mean they have to work for free now.

not much guys. I was incredibly nervous somehow.

Will said that they really want to visit Venezuela in the next Latin American Tour.

I told them I was looking forward to LP5.

I didn't want to bother them much, they were just leaving a restaurant with Mrs. Champion and Mrs. Buckland with another friend who I didn't recognize.

I had a US based travel industry friend there. She has taken loads of photos for me and they are on my Facebook now. She was quite close to the front. From what I gather, Gwyneth did not make an appearance, I am so jealous of her, I can hardly speak, lol!
