To celebrate its UK launch, MySpace Music has been busy putting together a series of celebrity playlists. R&B boys Pretty Ricky’s list suggests an unsurprising taste in bedroom music, while fans can imagine what Beyonce might be playing for her hubby Jay-Z. Inexplicably, amongst these celebrity lists is one put together by the Vatican.

The holy city state explains that their playlist is: “A perfect mix of classical, world and contemporary music. The genres are very different form each other, but all these artists share the aim to reach the heart of good minded people.” Sounds nice, but this can’t really be what’s playing in the Popemobile.


The twelve song list covers the predictable, beginning with “Advocata Nostra,” which features the Pope himself, and some Mozart for good measure. Muse and Fleet Foxes are surprisingly deep reaches, but still fall safety within the “nice songs for nice people” theme. (Not to mention, the opening line to Fleet Foxes “He Doesn’t Know Why” does sound a little like a Jesus reference: “Penniless and tired, with your hair grown long.”)

Things get confusing when Tupac Shakur makes an appearance with “Changes.” Yes, that Tupac.

The 1998 anthem address issues that fall more closely to the domain of gangsta rap than that of the Vatican, touching on racism, drugs and gang violence. He at one point suggests, “Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares one less hungry mouth on the welfare,” a solution we doubt the Vatican would support.

The playlist was put together by Father Giulio Neroni, artistic director of St. Paul’s Multimedia, so there’s no guarantee that the Pope himself has listened to all these songs. It does, however, imply an interest in engaging younger, edgier worshipers.

Most interestingly, however, might be the implications for Fox’s Bill O’Reilly. While he may have backing in his war against Jay-Z, Tupac’s appearance on this list seems like a change in the curriculum, and leaves us wondering if the Pope is keeping up with the O’Reilly Factor.

Thanks perrine! you are my personal muse cheerleader!!!! well of course i would love GA but then thats a whole day expedition! i need to find out how they are setting up the stage, i used to have a mole at MSG but he is gone. i am so lucky because i live 2 blocks from the train station that goes directly to MSG in the city and its only a 25 minute ride, so it wont be a 3 hour drive like hartford for CP but then again we did have front row and worth every single mile! so to answer your question of course stand!!!! but will be thrilled just to be there

^I didn't try (being in Texas, and all :P), but looking at their facebook page it looks like A LOT of people are PISSED. People talked about having tickets in their cart, then going through the whole payment info process only to lose the tickets when links failed and they were timed out. I think it must be a popularity thing as I almost bought Clapton tickets the other day for MSG and I remember the lowest price being $64.

I saw Clapton twice when I was younger because my Dad is a huge fan, both I'm pretty sure at Jones Beach, and he was absolutely mind blowing live. I wish I had enough money to buy tickets for myself after the ones I bought my parents and these Muse tickets.

Right now I rely on my brother for transportation protection purposes, my parents would never let me go into the city by train alone as long as I live in their house, and therefore rely on his decisions of timing, but, seriously, next tour I'm right up there with the true fans in GA.

The thing is, those are both school days, and there's no way my parents would be ok with driving 3 - 4 hours just one way to either Houston or Fort Worth on a school night, then driving all that way back that late at night. I would have homework, and even if I didn't we would get back really late and it would just be a mess. I mean, that's what happened when Coldplay came to Houston and Dallas back in November 08. They were both on school nights and even then they wouldn't let me go, even though they know how much I love Coldplay, with them being my favorite band. So it's even less of a chance that they would let me do it for Muse. It would definitely be possible if they were coming to Austin. But even then they would probably say no. Darn that school. :(

It's possible! I heard an interview Matt did on a local radio station a few months ago and he mentioned really wanting to be here in Austin for SXSW. That would be around the time they'll be in TX for the other shows! Fingers crossed!

It's possible! I heard an interview Matt did on a local radio station a few months ago and he mentioned really wanting to be here in Austin for SXSW. That would be around the time they'll be in TX for the other shows! Fingers crossed!

Muse just rocked my ****ing face off at KROQ ACX. I'll post pics later (none of which are that great, BTW). Simply put, these guys brought the house down. After sitting through the previous eight bands (some like Phoenix were fantastic, others like Slightly Stoopid weren't) for four straight hours, Muse took the stage, and that's when things lost control. From the moment "Uprising" began, everyone was on their feet and wailing. My friend and I were jumping up and down, undoubtedly annoying the mellow people behind us.

It wasn't a full performance, but it was still a serious contender for one of the best live acts I've seen. They don't exaggerate about Muse live. Best songs of the night were "Unnatural Selection" and "Knights of Cydonia", the latter of which had the full crowd jumping. I even developed a new appreciation for "United States of Eurasia", which I was never fond of but translates brilliantly live, with everybody pointing to the sky and screaming "SIA! SIA! SIA! SIA!" I'd say the one song that didn't go over so well was "Guiding Light", but such was a minor blip in a great performance.

I watched the first part of it on the live webcast... up to Guiding Light. Hysteria and Uprising were excellent, and I was pleasantly surprised they did Resistance, but I was REALLY surprised they did Guiding Light. Seemed like an odd choice for that type of show. :shrug:
But, it definitely got me excited to see them in a few months!! :dance: Now if I can only score tickets!

I really don't see how it would work. Toronto is like 3 hours away from here, which is doable if the show was on a weekend, but since it's on a Monday that would really mess up my schedule for the week. I would get back at 3 or 4 in the morning and then have to go to school a couple hours later! :(

ok ladies, NBC security is out of control, there was a page for every friggin person in the audiance, so we get there and we have to wait a long time in line, bu thank god it was inside because Rhianna was out at the Today Show plaza and there was a blizzard!!! so we wait and the show itselft was great our seats were ok, the musical stage was to the left of us. so everyone is like so quiet and no one was like shouting or anything and then all of the sudden is see matty is this gun metal leather outfit and was and the REd guitar i was like gahhhhhhhhh!!! i screamed out matty's name and he turned toward our direction, people were giggling cause it was so quiet. they sang Uprising and the sound was a bit off and Matt could tell, we screamed and squeeeed and they were great, so the show goes on and i am trying to tweet and security comes up and says put that phone away, i was busted and they said over and over no cameras no phones, so i was pissed, hence my lack of tweets, sorry there are no pics, i feel if you pulled out a camera you would get thrown out. so then they come on again and on the 2nd chord i knew it was Starlight and was so happy to hear it. they sounded much better the 2nd time. so wanted to hear more but it is a comedy show. we had a lovely time but then we had to deal with getting to a bar unfrozen and then get home, Matt is so skinnyhe had his hair all spiky and cute, dom looked amazing and Chris was devine

Glad you had a great time Christa! Yeah, shows like that are VERY strict on their camera policy. I suppose that strictness is more understandable than at a standard concert, however.

With the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers now complete, and the draw decided, I thought it would be fun to start up a song tournament with a difference - one in the same format as the FIFA World Cup.

What I propose to do is have users vote for songs off each album to 'qualify' for the tournament. 32 songs will be included overall. I will do one album every week to qualify, before the final 32 teams are decided. These will be grouped into 8 groups of 4. Then, each week in the leadup to the world cup I will post a series of matches to be played in which the fan's favourite song can be decided.

10. He’s made classical cool again.

Present Zakk Wylde with a chamber orchestra and he’d probably eat the conductor for breakfast and pick his teeth with the baton. Matt Bellamy has a different attitude, instead hijacking the fusty world of powdered wigs and harpsichords and fusing its coolest ideas into his mould-breaking guitar solos and riffs. As you bang your sweaty head to Plug in Baby’s monster intro, you are actually listening to a bastardization of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Bach’n’roll, baby…

9. His stage presence is off the wall.

Respect to the Muse set designer, but all the satellite dishes and acrobats in the world can’t compare to the spectacle of a small man from Devon losing himself in the music. Bellamy doesn’t ‘do’ banter, shout-outs or feet on monitors. Instead, he deals in unhinged virtuosity, stroking and strangling his Manson through the hits, jolt dancing like an electric eel, using nervous energy to power the greatest show on Earth (or any other planet).

8. He saved us from nu-metal

Sludge-tuned chugging topped with meathead rap was the sound of the new millennium, until Matt Bellamy arrived with Showbiz, fired stinger missile solos into the lumpen rock scene and reminded a generation that life doesn’t have to stop at the seventh fret. Without rubble rousing early guitar parts like Sunburn and Muscle Museum, this magazine would be full of potato-headed dullards mumbling about “playing for the song”. Nobody wants that.

7. He has a ‘superguitar’.

Actually, Matt has a bunch of superguitars; all built by UK luthier Hugh Manson and featuring more onboard technology than it took to put the first man on the moon. Matt’s guitars, including his famous ‘retired’ Delorean or Silver Manson, feature various combinations of Fernandes Sustainer pickups, Z.Vex Fuzz Factory stompbox circuitry and X-Y controlled KAOSS pads to allow him to manipulate his effects with his fingertips. Genius.

6. He made the most flamboyant debut album ever.

Muse released their first album Showbiz in 1999, the year of Britney Spear’s debut single Baby One More Time and not a whole lot else. Guitar music was flatlining, so the sight and sound of Matt Bellamy tearing at his guitar strings was exhilarating. Despite accusations from some quarters that Muse were little more than Radiohead rip-off, Matt’s heroic performance on songs like Muscle Museum proved that something special has arrived.

5. He bends all the rules.

On paper at least, a combination of progressive rock, classical music, electronica and pop shouldn’t really work… a bit like Genesis jamming to those horrible Hooked On Classics albums from the 80’s. Matt makes it work. Not many musicians can switch from a beautiful Danny Elfman style piano piece to a heavy as hell riff like he can. Listen to New Born (Origin of Symmetry, released in 2001) for evidence of the man’s genius.

4. His solos are works of art.

Matt’s solos are as beautifully constructed as his Manson guitars. A masterclass in expressive guitar technique his solos usually feature tremolo-picked passages, string scrapes, whammy bar clips and inventive use of effects. Matt has a fantastic vibrato and always manages to make his solos sound spontaneous, even if they are carefully constructed. Look up Knights of Cydonia: Live at Wembley Stadium 2007 to witness Matt’s killer lead guitar.

3. He has unrivalled creativity.

Matt Bellamy has some really serious chops. In addition to his incredibly unique guitar style, the guy kills on piano and has a three octave vocal range as demonstrated by his incredible falsetto singing on Plug in Baby and other gargantuan Muse ditties. As if all that virtuosity wasn’t enough, Matt is also the primary songwriter for Muse, composing classics such as Supermassive Black Hole, Stockholm Syndrome and Knights of Cydonia. Yeah, we’re jealous too.

2. He wrote the biggest riff of the decade.

If the sheer number of ‘attempts’ at music shows and in music shops is anything to go by, the Plug in Baby riff is this generation’s Sweet Child O’Mine or Stairway to Heaven. Like its illustrious forbears, Plug in Baby grabbed guitarists by the balls by virtue of its sheer inventiveness. The sick fuzz tone didn’t hurt much either. It’s one of those riffs that sounds fresh and unique, and it makes everyone wish they could play guitar.

1. He is the Hendrix of our generation.

Comparing anyone to Jimi Hendrix can get you in some serious trouble, but we can recon you’re on pretty safe ground with Matt Bellamy. Matt uses effects and feedback like a musical instrument, punctuating solos with weird pops and squeaks. Just like Jimi. In Matt’s hands the guitar is more than just a tool, it’s an extension of his body and his voice. Just like Jimi. He’s also that extremely rare combination of a guitar virtuoso who can write great songs that will stand the test of time.

Again, just like Jimi.
