I'm with Alex, I refuse to listen! :P But there are legit copies of Resistance floating around, so if it sounds like the preview then chances are it is!
I'm hoping I'll wake up tomorrow and find that they've decided to stream the song on the .mu media player, as happened this morning with Undisclosed Desire.

So I'm right in guessing only the first 4 tracks are out there so far? I spent a few hours entertaining/distracting myself watching the muselive kerfuffle before. Given I've got homework that probably wasn't a good idea. Still, too late now. I'm off to bed.

Tonight, Muse is giving a private show in Paris. "Theatre du Châtelet" is the area where the concert is taking place. Actually, it's a theater. People were queuing up this morning to get tickets at the price of 30€. I knew it too late.

Heh... #museleak is one of the top topics on twitter right now... :shocked2::laugh3: Made me do a double take.

So much for leaks being halfway secret for at least a day any more

...on the bright side, maybe all the people scratching their heads over it will become fans...

Did anyone get the full leak? I have bits and pieces of the songs, but the torrent they first leaked through is all but dead. One seeder and it's not going so well. I'll keep looking. Thank you, Twitter!

:stunned:

Wait, has it actually leaked in it's entirety? Because I can't seem to find any working links neither on torrent websites nor in the multimedia section. I've even checked the official Muse forums and there doesn't seem to be any talk of it, but then I guess it's against the rules to mention anything leak-related over there. Just wondering if anyone can confirm that it's actually out there somewhere now?

You can thank twitter for that... it alerted the authorities and they clamped down from what I'm hearing. Nothing like a searchable public database of chatter to find all the major links and exterminate them.

I don't know personally that it's real, but yeah, it's apparently the whole thing.

I actually found a link that apparently is the full thing, but I'm not going to be all that surprised if it's actually a fake like all the previous ones. Fingers crossed, though.

All right, so I wrote this up while listening to the full album the second time. I need food now, but the following summarizes my thoughts on each track:

Uprising – A respectable album opener, though far from the best opener in Muse history. Uprising’s greatest strength is that it’s energizing and makes you want to do some sort of movement with your body, whether it’s bop with the bass line or jump with the guitar bursts. Now that we’ve gotten used to it over the past month or so, I think it’s aged better than Eurasia and I get the song in my head often, but falls a bit short of past openers in the context of the entire album.

Resistance – Talk about a deceiving preview. The iTunes clip made it sound repetitive, but in full, this is one of the most remarkable songs on the album. The ambient intro followed by the brilliant piano is captivating, and the chorus which I initially found repetitive is now rather catchy. Of course, the whole “Love is our resistance!” part is a spectacular highlight. It could have worked well as the album opener, although I understand that the band wanted to “pump it up” a bit with Uprising. I also think the 1984 vibe here works far better than with USoE.

Undisclosed Desires – This is being declared the new Supermassive Black Hole everywhere, but I personally have a problem with this, not only because I don’t like SMBH that much, but because this blows it out of the water in every respect. It’s incredibly different from the Muse norm, and I expect it to divide the fanbase immensely, but I can foresee this becoming a huge radio hit. It’s mainstream, but it’s some of the best damn mainstream out there.

United States of Eurasia – Honestly, I’ve liked this song less and less as time goes on. I love Collateral Damage, and the main USoE aspect may work better in a stadium, but not only is it weak lyrically, but the composition may have gone a little too overboard. It’s not even the Queen comparisons that bug me; rather, I think it’s overdramatized. The band has joked about this and say that’s the intention, but that doesn’t prevent this from being one of the weaker songs. This album does large-scale epics better elsewhere.

Guiding Light – When we were told of a classic guitar riff in this song, I suppose I was expecting the second coming of Plug In Baby rather than the second coming of Invincible. (Not that I dislike Invincible or anything.) Still, though it has its cheesy moments, on the whole I think this is a respectable mid-album power ballad. On the weaker half of the album but could make a good future single.

Unnatural Selection – If this isn’t the next New Born, then it’s the closest thing since. Let’s face it – Muse may never return to the style of Origin of Symmetry. Still, this is the next best thing. Awesome riff, raw lyrics, uplifting chorus, mysterious bridge, epic breakdown. It’s already been played live once (which I had resisted watching videos of since I wanted to hear studio versions first), and I can imagine it making a huge splash. Certainly one of the top tracks of the album.

MK Ultra – This one hasn’t clicked with me yet, and may have to grow on me. It’s a good song but I’m just not seeing this one stand out among the crowd. It’s fast and heavy and that’s about all I can think of to say about it. I do love the final 30 seconds, but give me time with this one.

I Belong to You – The most surprising and the most deceptive song on the album. I went in expecting an average song based on the preview. I came out with my ears having sex with my iTunes. Appropriately, it’s quite the sexy song. Certainly one of Muse’s more interesting songs musically (especially the…clarinet solo?), the use of French lyrics only makes it more interesting from there. Speaking of which, I feel Matt’s voice is in prime form here. I eagerly await a translation of the French, but in the meantime, I consider this the shocker of the album and one of my favorites.

Exogenesis – I think it’s only proper to review this as one piece. After all, they would feel empty alone, but they flow together beautifully. Folks are already treating this epic as the best thing ever, and while I wouldn’t go that far, I can at least say that it’s damn good. Part II features my favorite moments of the symphony, but the other parts serve their wonderful purpose. Past album closers have been hard to top, but I think this offers such a fantastic direction that it ends the album really ambitiously, and this will likewise be hard to top.

Time will tell where I rank this in the oirder of Muse albums (though I envision that I'll at least place it above Showbiz and BH&R). To sum it all up, my album favorites are Resistance, Unnatural Selection, and I Belong to You, while I'm not as big on United States of Eurasia and maybe Guiding Light and MK Ultra. There's no terrible song on the album, though. Can't wait to blare this in my car. :D

Can't stop listening to that album!
There're some tracks that hasn't clicked yet, but overall the album is fucking genius!

Highlights for me:
- MK Ultra (very very Muse-y...love it!)
- I Belong To You (yes, the middle part is a bit wierd & boring at first, but then it grew on me on the 2nd listen, the end is so so good though!)
- Exogenesis, & I think this is the highlight for everyone, Matt is a fucking genius!

Their most consistent album so far. As far as style goes, It is a new direction again for Muse, Probably a cross between Absolution and Origin of Symmetry with it's classical influences and depth.

It needs to be listened to in full to be appreciated. The tracks on their own don't stand out as exceptional, and need to be listened to in the context of the album but as a whole, it is an amazing album. Theme: The idea that love gives us hope and pulls us through times of hardship.

Matt's vocals are the best they've ever been.

Exogenesis is like nothing a rock band has ever done. Amazing, moving.

I highly recommend it as one of the albums of the year so far.

Alright. I love Muse, I really do but If I'm honest, after 3 listens, I am a bit dissapointed with the album overall.
My favourite song is the amazing Undisclosed Desires, quckly followed by United States of Eurasia. (I've always liked Uprising)
I like I Belong to you, Guiding Light is alright, so is Unnatural Selection and Exogenesis is no way near as big and epic as it was made out to be.
MK Ultra is a dissapointment.
Overall, it's good but not as good as I thought, maybe I will need a few more listens but I have the feeling that Matt Bellamy's gone a bit 'up himself' with himself! Don't get me wrong, i really like Matt, he's one of my fave musicians but I think the albums not as good as he thinks!

Yeah, "Guiding Light" is OK. I thought it was going to be a dud, though, when I heard the 30-second sample, so I was happy that it wasn't.

I think I KINDA get what you mean by "Exogenesis." I was expecting something a bit stronger, but I still think it's lovely.

What does everyone think of the symphony? Is it any good?

deaths_friend
12-09-2009, 03:13 PM
personally i dont think its anything special. its just a..........symphony. to me it doesnt sound like he has achieved anything unique or ground breaking with it. nonetheless i think it will make for an amazing end to their shows. but i think its a pretty good record the only real problem i have with it is that it lacks the raw energy of their earlier work instead its become a little predictable. but thats fine with me, theyre still one of my fave bands and cant wait to see them live one day.

12-09-2009, 11:21 PM
it did have a lot of hype around it, and i wish it was longer with much more guitar in Cross Pollination. but there wasn't.

It was good, Matt did a good job, may not have achieved anything but ended the album well.

Unnatural Selection drags on during the middle, which is the only part I don't like too much.
apart from that it's a good song

Finally got my hands on The Resistance!
Quite a good album in my opinion.
Definitely different to the kind of music I usually listen to.
The symphony to me is, well I think it's quite a beautiful piece but not something that's really powerful.
I think this album needs to be listened to as a whole to really appreciate it.

The first four tracks remain my favourites.
I've been listening to Uprising and United States of Eurasia for some time already and I really love them. Resistance and Undisclosed Desires are rather catchy tunes.
But Guiding Light is IMO a break in the "flow" of the album. I felt like I was beamed back to the '80s. Unnatural Selection is actually good, but at some point I just wanted it to stop ... it is way too long for my taste.
I'm starting to like MK Ultra, although I don't like it as much as the first four tracks.
I belong to you was rather unexpected, but in a nice way. It is IMO too long again though.
The symphony is not quite as epic as I expected, although I really love Part 3.

The Making of is quite interesting, I expected a bit more though. The making of Uprising is very detailed, but some other tracks are hardly mentioned.

Now the Symphony. Wow. That was something. Pretentious beyond all belief, but who wouldn't expect that from them. And they pull it off so well.

I'm so jealous of Matt's piano playing. He supposedly can't even read music. I studied for nearly 6 years and can't play anything. *sigh*

So after a week, I've decided that Guiding Light is my least favorite song on the album. I'm okay with a bit of cheesiness (I'm a fan of Starlight, for crying out loud), but Guiding Light is basically a new version of Invincible that aims to be far more epic and theatrical than it actually is.

Resistance and Unnatural Selection compete for my album favorite, but Resistance may pull through due to the fact that Unnatural Selection drags in the latter half, while the serene, drawn-out build and fade in Resistance doesn't inhibit the song.

Guiding Light is whining, asking me to listen to another band does not make it any less whiney. I hate both of those songs you mentioned, so it's no surprise that I dislike Guiding Light then is it?

i really really want to disagree with you. but to a certain degree you're right. just the way you've stated it makes it sound really bad. muse is cheesy, self indulgent and over the top and if you told the band that they would pretty much agree with you. its not the type of music you sit down and analyse. but i dont see how its cheesy-ness and self indulgence makes it shit?

Yeah, it's a symphony. Big deal. I don't see how finding a symphony on a "rock" album makes said album "over-the-top." It's different, yes, but not to the extent of "OMG, WTF is that doing on there?" [Not that you were saying that, just making a point.]

HAHA, Rick Astley. I just got a vision of Matt Bellamy swaying and singing "Never Gonna Give You Up" when I read that. :laugh4:

yeah i agree with you in a way. but i still think its quite OTT (means over the top incase you didnt know) in place and trust me, if there werent any OTT moments on the album i would be complaining because nobody does OTT rock like muse.

so just to make it clear. im not saying the album as a whole is OTT just there are certain moments in the album which are. just like every previous muse album. but the 15mins symphony has sort of taken it to a new level.

You know, you make a good point when you put it that way. Like the "Mon Coeur S'ouvre A Ta Voix" thing.

I do, yes. Granted, there's that slow section in there, and I don't quite get how that fits in with the rest of the song. However, I love the song in general. The bit about the ocean is my favorite part of the song. :)

^^ Can't YouTube now, but that looks awesome!
especially resistance intro lol.
+1.
And the teddy-bear thing started when the cover art for the Urprising single (http://muse.mu/shop/product/167/uprising/menu/4/singles/) was released, and it kinda went from there...
Though that still doesn't explain WHY :p
“We’d like to do something with the teddies, definitely,” Bellamy giggles. “The idea is to have this large group of them staging an uprising, causing chaos; on a protest march outside parliament, that sort of thing. I’ve always found that side of human psychology fascinating; the way that we project our emotions onto things such as pets, toys, objects. So a large group of toy bears forming a sinister teddy uprising might be interesting.”
Yeah, that totally makes sense, Matt!

I've actually noticed that a lot of male musicians in general are on the shorter side of the spectrum. I'm a music education major at my college, and I've made the great observation that a lot of the guys are kinda short. I'm starting to think there may be some sort of correlation here...
