are you serious? :stunned:
Yes, who taught him how to play guitar? His riffs are just slow and boring. I've never seen a less intense band in my life. They don't even have good special effects or anything.

ok i think we've dished out enough shit.
just most of us here prefer to keep it to one thread to each band. but i guess muse are popular enough for two threads. radiohead always have 2 or 3 going so its only fair.

They're awesome, but I can see why some people wouldn't like them. The vocal style is odd, but I'm more into it for the instrumentals anyway.

Now I need a new head.
A lot of interesting sounds, but I think anyone looking for the "classic" Muse may not find it. Then again, 30 second clips are a poor indication of an entire song. I really want to hear the full guitar of "Guiding Light".

Yeah, Chris has been asking the local fans to go & support the band so the council will agree...I didn't get it, why do they need this council approval to play the gigs?!!!
deaths_friend
19-08-2009, 05:11 AM
^^
well im guessing it will involves tens of thousands of people coming to the town which isnt really used to that sort of attention. every major event and festival has to get council approval for everything. like recently the reading fest got permission to increase its capacity from 80 000 to 86 000. just how things work i guess.

Matt's shiny silver guitar is AWESOME - just as impressive as his sparkly red one!
I generally don't like the look of eyeliner on guys either, but in this case I love it, it makes him look sexy (though there are a couple of pics where he has maybe a little TOO much :P)... plus it emphasises the blue of his eyes! *sighs*
Oh and I don't think I've ever seen pictures of Bono without his glasses on... :P

that one is hilarious! :P
“We’d like to do something with the teddies, definitely,” Bellamy giggles. “The idea is to have this large group of them staging an uprising, causing chaos; on a protest march outside parliament, that sort of thing. I’ve always found that side of human psychology fascinating; the way that we project our emotions onto things such as pets, toys, objects. So a large group of toy bears forming a sinister teddy uprising might be interesting.”
That quote made my day today!

Hi everyone :nice:
I'm Jen and I'm a Muse newbie. My friend demanded I listen to Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations when she found out I hadn't heard them. Now I can't stop listening!!
I know I can start googling and find out pretty much anything I want to know about them, but I figured I'd start here. So, is there anything in particular I should know about this amazing band??

they are the best live band in the world at the moment. and if you called them the greatest of all time you wouldnt be too far off. buy, watch and listen to as much live footage as you can cos thats how i got to love them. most fans would tell you the albums are awesome too but nothing on what they sound like on stage. they just take it to another level.
new album is going to be intersting. it will go to no.1 everywhere except the US.

September 14 in australia at least. not sure about the rest of the world. but knowing muse they would most prob do simultaneous-worldwide-at-the-strike-of-midnight-release thing.

I'm pretty sure the album will be out earlier than the 14th in Australia. Albums normally come out (officially) on Saturdays (the 12th), but stores over here (JB Hi Fi) dont mind putting the CDs on the shelf early, on the thursday even (10th).
My bet is that I will have it in my hands on Friday 11th, 9am.

So I'm going to see U2 in September and Muse is opening for them, what albums would you recommend me get?
I've also seen this be quite a popular band on this forum and have heard good things about them, I just haven't had a chance to get an album to listen to them.

I would start with Origin of Symmetry (2nd album), honestly. It's probably their most focussed and cohesive album so far, and I think it's pretty much regarded as their best. If you like the two songs below you'll probably love the album.
YouTube - Muse - Plug In Baby
YouTube - Muse - Bliss
---------
If you like that album, you could try Absolution (3rd album), which has a slightly darker atmosphere, while having a good blend of their softer sound and their rocking sound.
YouTube - Muse - Butterflies And Hurricanes
After that, you could try any one of their other albums - Showbiz (their first album) is their most Radiohead sounding album, so you might want to check that out before moving onto their 2006 album Black Holes & Revelations, the latter being probably their most varied / pop-sounding record to date.

Muse - 'The Resistance': Exclusive Track By Track Guide
See Gigwise's thoughts...
by Jason Gregory
Tuesday, September 01, 2009
In an epic setting at the top of one of London's tallest building, Gigwise was given a very special listen to Muse's new album 'The Resistance' on Tuesday (September 1).
Check out our first impressions of the band's follow-up to 2006's 'Black Holes And Revelations' in our track by track guide below.
'Uprising'
If ever a statement of intent was needed for 'The Resistance', then it arrives almost immediately in the chorus for opener 'Uprising'. “They will not force us, they will stop degrading us,” sings frontman Matt Bellamy over an emphatic, crunching combination of bass and drums, before adding ominously: “They will not control us, we will be victorious.” It's an intimidating start the album: one that sees the mighty of Muse come up against a haunting, Dr Who-echoing synth and a guitar riff that sounds a little like Blondie's 'Call Me'.
'Resistance'
After a ghostly instrumental opening, the album's title track provides the first real sign that Muse have been listening to a lot of Queen. Here, it sounds as though the late Freddie Mercury is duetting with Bellamy as Muse's frontman repeatedly chants the songs chorus of, “It could be wrong. It could be wrong.” It's an ambitious slice of stadium rock that gallops towards a dramatic climax, before finally breaking down again at the song's conclusion.
'Undisclosed Desires'
A sinister sounding love song where, aside from the retro 80s musicianship, all of the emphasis is placed firmly on Bellamy's lyrics. He sounds, at times, like he's trying to court a demon. “You maybe a sinner, but your innocence is mine,” sings the frontman at the beginning, before adding later: “I want to reconcile the violence in your heart.”
'United States of Eurasia (+ Collateral Damage)'
I'll brush over the fact that this really does sound like Queen - it's an unashamed attempt to cater to a stadium audience - and instead focus on the atmospherics created by the song's haunting, Arabian sounding breakdown. Special mention also needs to go to the (+ Collateral Damage) suffix at the end, which provides an emotional juxtaposition to 'USOE's' scaremongering lyrics. Bellamy proves himself to be an accomplished pianist throughout 'The Resistance', but none more so than on this track.
'Guiding Light'
There's no chance for a breather as 'Guiding Light' ramps up the pace of the album with its hard-hitting drum beat and bass line. Bellamy's melodic guitar playing in the song's breakdown contains elements of The Edge, before he – and the track – erupts into another monumental Rock riff (think Queen, again). Lyrically, the frontman is still evoking images of love and salvation as he says there is “no guiding light left inside”.
'Unnatural Selection'
After beginning with an ethereal sounding church organ, 'Unnatural Selection' transforms into a driving, full-throttle mammoth (think 'Supermassive Black Hole', only 100bpm faster) which, at times, seems to leave even Bellamy gasping for air. Thankfully for the singer, however, the song breaks down as he sings about trying “to ride out the storm” over a distorted guitar solo. The pace then picks up again as the Bellamy and bassist Chris Wolstenholme unleash a Rage Against The Machine sounding finale.
'MK Ultra'
A symphony according to Muse, 'MK Ultra' provides a proper introduction to the album's classical influences, which Bellamy and his bandmates spoke so passionately about during production. The track's frenetic pace is broken up with an ethereal string section, which Muse manage to make it their own by adding traces of their trademark psychedelia and sing-a-long hooks. I expect this will more than make its mark when the band take 'The Resistance' on the road this autumn.
'I Belong To You'
Along with 'Undisclosed Desires', 'I Belong To You's' piano-driven intro is notably 80s influenced. But, just as Keane showed last year with 'Spiralling', that isn't always necessarily a good thing. The lyrics - “I've travelled the whole world to say I belong to you” - are also a bit too Tom Chaplin in places. As with previous tracks on the album, the song features another instrumental breakdown, which sees Bellamy showcase some of his best French. Piano and drums return – along with what sounds like an oboe – at the song's conclusion.
'Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1'
The first song of the album's concluding three-part symphony evokes Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets, which is suitable for a band who appear to have broken through the outer-echelons of space at times on 'The Resistance'. Bellamy sings in elongated breaths of air as a long and powerful guitar solo emerges from the distance. It's chilling and, above all, proves we're still listening to Muse, not Mozart.
'Exogenesis: Symphony Part 2'
Part two features a more piano led opening with a solo from Bellamy. The subtleness is soon broken, however, as the song develops into an elaborate, drum-powered second third. It's yet further evidence that Muse seem determined to challenge each other on every musical level throughout 'The Resistance'. The question is: just what will their fans think?
'Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3'
'Exogensis' concludes in a suitably Muse-like way. Following another orchestral opening, the song builds into an emotive and epic chorus where Bellamy and Wolstenholme share vocal duties. The band then take their foot off the pedal as the song – and the album – comes to an end.
'The Resistance' is released on September 14. Muse will tour the UK in November.
Grace.

Uprising
A glam-rock 'Robot Rock' (Daft Punk) meets 'Stand and Deliver' (Adam Ant) synth throb, the combined effect of which is a little like Belgian band Millionaire. Or rather this is this album's 'Supermassive Black Hole' but with a riff a little like Battles' 'Atlas' but with intermittent Blondie 'Call Me' guitar squeals. Matt Bellamy's lyrics on this opening track kick things off in battle mode: "A fat cats had a heart attack...we've gotta unify and let the flag ascend....they will not control us, we will be victorious."
The Resistance
A tiny piano line, then drums like galloping the white horses of a tsunami. There's an odd nod to the Public Image Limited track 'Rise' with Bellamy pondering: "He could be wrong, could be wrong...couldn't be right?" However, this track is pretty much the album's concept summed up with the line "Love is our resistance..." but don't panic, this isn't an album free of sci-fi conspiracy, as Matt sings "our lips must always be sealed" before a thunder 'n' lightning-like Kate Bush 'Running Up That Hill' homage snaps and rumbles as the track ends.
Undisclosed Desires
With a skippity R&B rhythm, a hip-hop beat and mixed with a Dirty Projectors' soaring vocal melody (singing: "I want to reconcile the violence in your heart... I want to exorcise the demons from your past."), this track is an odd but interesting new feather to Muse's bow. Some reviewers will probably compare the chopped up samples to Thom Yorke's 'Harrowdown Hill' but it's much more kevlar coated and doused in 'Idioteque' head-nodability than that.
United States of Eurasia (+collateral damage)
The one you've probably already heard. An ode to Spielberg? Sounds like the opening of 'Radars of the Lost Ark' as played by Queen and Jeff Buckley. Fades into a Fellini cafe moment, followed by fighter plane flare and huge gong/drum-thud.
Guiding Light
A marching hymn-like anthem. Those giant robot footed bass-synths stomp all over it. Sort of like MCR's 'Black Parade' stripped right down but sort of not.
Unnatural Selection
The organ opening makes way for a pounding 'Agitated'/'New Born'-like riff. Not sure if it's the volume but this whole track (and most of the album this far) jitters like a beast with the shakes before making way for more of that gravity-defying floating off wonder that is Muse's trademark. Oddly, this is the first time I've noticed the lack of that compressed heavy breathing which rubs a lot of non-Muse fans up the wrong way.
MK Ultra
Soaring, swooping and then clattering, then soaring like a shuttle ride (or at least the Disney roller-coaster version). Then a fuck off neck-pissing down riff. This track is a glorious rock epic.
I Belong to You (+Mon Coeur S'Ourve A Ta Voix)
Like the heaviest boogie-piano line Elton John never dared write. Followed by a French (like, literally sung in French) waltz motionlessly racing through the house of flying daggers. Then the melody drops back in and grooves around the refrain "I travelled half the world to say I belong to you."
Exogenesis: Symphony Part i (Overture)
Ladies and Gentlemen we're floating in Planet of the Apes space, crossing jungles and getting howled at by the Mayans. Waterfalls of strings, guttural bass thundering beneath. [Insert obvious Pink Floyd comparison here.]
Exogenesis: Symphony Part ii (Cross Pollination)
Plinky piano builds to a Godzilla riff. It's fucking ridiculous but exhilaratingly and brilliantly indulgent. Bellamy howls "You must rescue us all!"
Exogenesis: Symphony Part iii (Redemption)
This is lovely. A sleepy-time music box swirls and graciously builds and builds with strings atop a wondrous drum line before the whole thing rises up like an army of yawning tigers. Flowers open and suns rise and fall in fast forward on far-off horizons.
Conclusion: Muse have clearly gone off and explored their own possibilities, and the result is an album that rarely relents and surprises you with what's around the next bend. Really can't tell after one listen whether there are any huge hits on this record or whether the album is just one big adventure from a band who are really hitting their stride and unafraid of taking the lazy rehash path. The singles released thus far certainly don't do the album justice but perhaps offer digestible clues to this albums grandeur and the ever more sophisticated mad-scientist-ness that we've come to know and love from this Teignmouth trio. The symphony on the end is perhaps a bit much but then Muse have never been a band afraid of being bewilderingly over the top. 9/10

Song or album? Heaps of fans have heard the song, a guy in Melb got the CD tonight and posted that song, but nothing else.

That video was posted on the muse.mu site a couple of weeks ago, maybe it will work better on there?
