He also includes classical parts into his songs, like, for example, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto n°2 : he included parts of the first movement in Megalomania, Space Dementia and Ruled by Secrecy, and parts of the third movement in Butterflies & Hurricanes. Later, you can hear a part of Tchaïkovsky's Piano Concerto n°1 in the middle of Hoodoo.

Well, if you compare a band to an older one, then you should speak of influence rather than comparison I guess.

About old music, nothing prevents you from switching off MTV and buying Pink Floyd albums, which are very much better, IMO.

thanks for your answer, you are right, i meant influences more than be compared with... I don't watch mtv, i don't like it.

repress and restrain
steal the pressure and the pain
wash the blood off your hands
this time she won't understand

change in the air
and they'll hide everywhere
no one knows who's in control

you're working so hard
and never in charge
your death creates success
rebuild and supress

change in the air
and they'll hide everywhere
no one knows who's in control

change in the air
and they'll hide everywhere
no one knows who's in control

I'm loving this song so much right now.

For me, it IS on the album. Be it Japan Extra or not, I guess it was on the original project, just as Spiral Static, Futurism and Fury.
It's one of the best songs in the album, certainly better than several "normal" ones, and I think it gives a terriffic ending to BHAR, better than KoC.

I especially like it when, at the beginning and end, guitars play this bizarre combination of simple melodies : fantastic !

Within the craze of British bands, Muse stands out from the junk as worthy enough for the attention all the others get.
Musical extraordinaire Matthew Bellamy pilots the rockers as lead vocalist while holding down guitar and keys. His seemingly constant falsetto and ridiculously epic-ness in which he portrays his lyrics is tough not to want to sing with. ''Stockholm Syndrome'' is a testament to his skill on strings while ''Butterflies and Hurricanes'' has Bellamy-esque epic, piano solo highlighting the middle of the song.
Even the bassist Chris Wolstenholme has to have strong bass lines because many of its songs play them. ''Hysteria,'' ''Dark Shines'' and ''Time is Running Out'' are all examples of Wolstenholme's power through chilling lines.
Drummer Dominic Howard plays with authority not often heard from upstage. His intricate rhythms in ''Map of the Problematique'' and ''Stockholm Syndrome'' and fills in ''Apocalypse Please'' and ''Assassin'' beg for air drums and head banging.
The fact that these guys are actually from Britain is somewhat of an accomplishment, seeing bands today often imitate the nasally accent to gain listeners (see: The Killers -- from Las Vegas).
Compared to other British bands, they stack up quite nicely and are noticeably different than most anything coming through speakers these days.
Joss Stone, well, doesn't compare basically because she's more of a Motown vocalist. Nice try, anyway.
The boys of Franz Ferdinand make a good effort, but next to Muse look like nerds with its choppy songs, suit jackets and odd dancing.
David Bowie has a little something on Muse because of his career on the big screen.
What's that? His movie career consists of ''Labyrinth'' and a smaller part in ''The Prestige?'' Looks like his movie parts actually cancel out everything he has done musically, so he is also no match for Muse.
Muse has often been described as a Radiohead spin-off with more edge, but in reality Muse would destroy Thom Yorke's ''genius.'' All his songs are boring, but while they match up in the ''pushing too much falsetto'' category, Yorke's style puts people to sleep while Bellamy's is backed by his powerful band and music.
Last up to the plate is Coldplay. Chris Martin may have the sex appeal, but as a band, its music doesn't compare to the difficulty of Muse's. Its musicians, while playing off each other well, don't individually stack up to the level of this trio (see: any aforementioned song).
On the other hand, what person isn't obviously awesome who has a daughter named ''Apple?''
You know how I know you're gay? Because you like Coldplay.
Verdict: Muse dominates Great Britain.

perhaps and ode to Jeff Buckley?? Matt has said that Buckley was definitely one of his influences.... and Jeff has a song called "Kanga-Roo", however I haven't heard the Muse song...... so,, it should be interesting...

any where I can find an mp3?:wink3:

Nothing like that. Sorry if I break a dream, but Kangaroo Blues is the title of an unofficial CD (actually the recording of the Sydney Big Day Out 2004). Don't try this hard to find a link between words. It's called Kangaroo Blues just because the concert was in Australia. (Tell me you don't need me to explain what a kangaroo is...)

I think I uploaded it some time ago (quite a while, actually), but it's really no cause for attention.

Muse give a concert in Paris in June. In a few hours' time it was sold out. I won't see them.

It's because it's set in one of the richest areas in Paris (16th area actually).

What I try to say is that I would've loved to go in this incredible French stadium to watch Muse : it's like the French Wembley. But the tickets were far too expensive for a poor suburbian like me.

Sad but true.

In 8 years, the rock group has gone from playing a near-empty Viper Room to a sold-out Forum.

Where: The Forum, 3900 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood
When: 8 p.m. Tuesday
Price: $27.50 to $32.50 (sold out)
Info: (310) 330-7300; (213) 480-3232; www.thelaforum.com, www.ticketmaster.com

MUSE singer-guitarist Matthew Bellamy can still remember the British trio's first Los Angeles gig. "It was at the Viper Room. There were only about 20 people there," he recalls. "It must have been when I was 19 or 20 in 1999. It was one of our first gigs abroad."

That show was set up to showcase the band for American suitors from Maverick and Columbia Records, but the conditions were far from ideal. "It was the first time I had really flown that far from home," Bellamy says. "I was completely unfamiliar with the feeling of jet lag. It probably wasn't the best performance we ever did because we were all half asleep on stage."

Still, the trio managed to impress Maverick executive Guy Oseary, who, Bellamy says, attended the gig "with some geezer from the Sex Pistols" — actually guitarist-turned-radio host Steve Jones — and Muse scored a U.S. recording contract.

Fast-forward eight years, and Muse — which also includes bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard — is preparing to play its biggest North American headlining gig Tuesday at the sold-out 18,000-seat Forum. In the interim, the band split from Maverick but found a more sympathetic home with its parent company, Warner Bros. Records.

Although Maverick had high hopes for Muse, "Showbiz," the band's debut album, received a lukewarm critical reception, failed to chart and sold 100,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Things got so bad that Maverick opted not to release the band's second effort, "Origin of Symmetry," in the U.S. (It was subsequently released in 2005 by Warner Bros. but sold only 49,000 copies).

The band's fortunes began to change when it moved to Warner Bros., which issued "Absolution" in 2004. That album sold 513,000 copies and spawned two Top 10 modern rock hits, "Hysteria (I Want It Now)" and "Time Is Running Out," both of which became staples on KROQ-FM (106.7) and stoked the group's growing popularity as a live act.

In subsequent years, Muse has gone on to headline the Mayan Theatre in May 2004, a two-night stand at the Wiltern in December 2004, a date at the Greek Theatre in summer 2006, and now the Forum in support of its latest effort, "Black Holes and Revelations," which debuted at No. 9 and features the current modern rock hit "Starlight."

"For them to headline the Forum on their own is exceptional," says Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of Pollstar, which covers the concert business. "It obviously indicates huge popularity in Southern California." Bongiovanni compares Muse's success as a live draw in L.A. to Depeche Mode, whose KROQ-fueled popularity in the late '80s eventually led the group to a headline date at the Rose Bowl in 1988.

Although Muse isn't big enough to headline outdoor stadiums in the U.S., it has reached that level in the U.K., where it's scheduled to play two nights at the 75,000-seat Wembley Stadium in June. "It'll be a big challenge to us," Bellamy says on the phone during a tour stop in Japan. "You have to really think about a different type of show. You've got to really care and think about the people at the back and the top, who are not going to see my facial expressions. You've got to put a lot more effort into the visual side of the show."

Muse's music, which mixes the drama and apocalyptic angst of Radiohead with the operatic bombast of Queen, is well-suited to larger venues. The fact that Bellamy's lyrics avoid British colloquialisms in favor of more universal themes has also contributed to the band's success.

"We're just keeping the old British rock flame alive," Bellamy says, perhaps sensitive about the Radiohead comparisons, which stymied the band's progress early on. "The '90s threatened to wipe it out with Brit-pop and a lot of the softer bands like Coldplay and Radiohead. One of the reasons we get associated with some of the '70s rock bands is because we are one of the few British bands that actually plays rock music, or what I call rock music."

One of Muse's most epic rockers is "Knights of Cydonia," an alternative rock hit from "Black Holes and Revelations." Wolstenholme has said the song sums up "40 years of rock history in six minutes," which gives Bellamy a laugh.

Many have assumed it's Muse's attempt to pay homage to Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western soundtracks, but actually the inspiration was a lot closer to home. Bellamy's father, George, played guitar in the early '60s combo the Tornados, whose space-rock instrumental "Telstar" became the first No. 1 single by a British act in America.

"I wanted to do something that was a bit of reference toward that because I never really paid attention to any of that music when I was growing up," he says. "I just recently realized my dad's band was pretty cool."

Sunburn, Feeling Good and CE! :) The whole show was awesome (and a little deafening). I think Matt couldn't hear himself sometimes though, because he was totally off pitch playing/singing sometimes. Like the Invincible solo--totally off. Though, still, FUCKING AWESOME. :D And... not to mention... the band looked friggin' hot too I might add. :D Everyone pulled out cellphones during Soldier's Poem just like people do during Fix You, hehe.

God, the parking sucked. So did the acoustics in The Forum. And so did the people around me--the people to my left were really dull, the people in front of me were smoking pot, and the people on our right were high. Okay, the dull people didn't bother me that much. Ugh. That kinda ruined a bit--but nothing can completely ruin a Muse concert... right? Heh.

We got two free shirts though--we found them on the floor while walking out. Way to save $60. :D

Anyone know who Atreyu is? Well, we saw the drummer walk by us... I didn't say hi or anything, haha.

Anyway, I could write more, but I've got school in a few hours... so nighty night.

At first thats how I felt after the concert, I was disappointed that they weren't as talky with the crowd. I guess you have to look at in a different perspective.. I was thinking about it, and I actually prefer them to not talk so much, more playing time:D Maybe if Chris didn't talk so damn much, they could fit another song in..:laugh4: Kidding, but you do see a band live to watch the music, not be talked to, so don't be too disappointed. I'm glad you had fun though!!!!!

And being more starstruck by Coldplay is understandable, when I saw Muse, I wasn't choking on excitement and shock like I was Coldplay, I think it may be because we've liked them longer.. Who knows.

But the setlist for last night was amazing!!!!!!

The blossoming of English art-metal rose Muse is the sensation no one saw coming.

Sure, maybe holdouts at Warner Bros., the trio's label (and distributor during its Maverick days earlier this decade), still had faith after four albums. "Somehow," someone must have thought, "these guys are going to break here. Their fans will come in time."

So they stuck by the band, taking cautious delight when 2003's "Absolution" yielded a modest hit – the irresistible apocalyptic groove "Time Is Running Out" – and eventually went gold. And "Black Holes and Revelations," last year's follow-up and the strongest Muse record to date, showed even more promising signs of imminent success. It helped, of course, to launch with a single, "Starlight," with as much appeal to Coldplay lovers as Tool-heads hungry for a different sort of heavy sound.

Lo and behold, the album debuted in Billboard's Top 10 – yet, like so much other stirring music these days, the disc has had zero commercial staying power, receiving only steady (never oversaturated) airplay from KROQ and negligible attention from video outlets.

What, then, can explain how Muse managed to sell out the Forum on Tuesday night?

Easy: word-of-mouth reaction to its concerts, still among the most powerful tools in music promotion.

Muse has built its reputation stateside – and in Southern California in particular – in the same manner as Radiohead and Tool, comparably enigmatic forebears whose tremendous shows solidified a following no amount of weird clips aired in the wee hours on MTV ever could. An amalgam that in the past year or so has finally carved out its own identity from a wealth of instantly detected influences, Muse is proof that old-fashioned marketing – relentless touring combined with tenacious spirit – can still work.

And when it does, it can result in rabidly devoted fans.

So it is that virtually every song Muse played Tuesday night – including anything off its mostly neglected 1999 debut, "Showbiz" – was greeted with the sort of bellowing roar one hears when Rush kicks off "Tom Sawyer." Partly that eruption came as a release after such a long wait: The outfit's remarkable performance at September's Inland Invasion in Devore, where it upstaged a late and long-in-the-tooth Guns N' Roses, was a breakout moment that had attendees craving more and absentees buzzing with anticipation for another sighting.

The Forum gig, then – one of only two North American headlining dates from Muse before the band joins My Chemical Romance on tour – is really the first chance recent SoCal converts have had to experience the group's mighty bombast. And what a sonic blast it was: Where Radiohead amazes with experimental chemistry, Muse dazzles with tightly collaborative virtuosity.

Bassist Chris Wolstenholme can be as forceful yet nimble as the Who's John Entwistle, while drummer Dominic Howard deftly teeters between meter-shifting chops-flashing and firmly anchoring grooves (Muse may be the only art-metal outfit you can dance to).

But soaring vocalist Matthew Bellamy is the band's double threat, a super-skilled fretman adept at both classically arpeggiated solos and chugging Nirvana riffs who from time to time will sit down at the piano and make like a rock Rachmaninoff.

If it all sounds incredibly over the top, well, it is. Take Queen, Maynard James Keenan, Thom Yorke, bits of Metallica, Depeche Mode (noticeable on "Map of the Problematique"), a dash of Gothic noir and plenty of the unabashed grandeur of Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, puree it all and add heady lyrics about theology, alien life, conspiracy theories and the end of the world – and out pours Muse.

It would all be disastrous if Bellamy and Co. were absurdly dramatic about their presentation, but instead, like Tool, they just hunker down and play, relying on trippy visuals and the occasional plume of smoke to compensate for their static nature. Yet that's exactly the sort of concert that gets people coming back for more: You may not have heard of Muse now, but once you encounter it live, if it's your cup o' tea, you'll take to it like a heroin addict takes to methadone.

That fan fervency is what will keep Muse afloat for many years to come, while other flavors (the Killers, say, whose own brand of propulsive rock paled in comparison the night before at Staples Center) seem apt to fade quickly. Killers fans may prove fickle; Muse fans will only grow stauncher.

And mark my words: By 2010, it'll be one of the main attractions at Coachella.

Apparently, Muse is being well received by My Chemical Romance fans...

Last night was pretty much the best night of my life ever! MCR weren't amazing but hey I know they wouldn't. Studio albums = awesome, Live = not so good - but getting a shit load better. It was still awesome to see them though, I've loved them for a long time now.

But Muse. Muse were incredible. I can't say anymore just because I can't explain how amazing it all was. It was so good that I didn't even mind pints of beer being thrown all over the place. Heck, it was fun getting soaked in beer.

We stood around for about 30 minutes before Muse stepped on stage and began playing,
a beautiful display of stobe lights followed thier music.
They were suprisingly amazing and for some odd reason the way the light shined on the singer and the way some air blew his hair around, also the way he sang, he just seemed so angelic, it was wierd.
The bassist had a lovley voice too, it was all just perfect.
I really want to go buy thier newest album now.
They eventually left the stage without really saying anything to the crowd during the whole show but they were still amazing.

" Muse F***ing Rocked MAn"

"They were amazing =]

"I'm totally gonna get flamed for this but WOAH! I've been looking forward to seeing MCR live for so long, and when I finally go, I enjoy the support band just as much!

My friends thought they were pretty good - better than most support bands - but couldn't believe I thought they were in the same league as My Chemical Romance. Who else loved these guys?! Gerard et al sure have good taste!"

It's good to know those MCR fans like Muse too. :)

I hope being in this tour with MCR will really give something positive & worthy to Muse.
I don't know the exact reason why they're willing to do this, but whatever it is hopefully they achieve it.
So they won't be remembered only as the opening act for MCR.

So Matt didn't talk much, huh? :D
I went to see Muse last February here in Jakarta and the one who talked more to the crowd was Dom.
He even said something quite long at the end of the show, but he was talking so fast and the crowd was so noisy that I could barely hear what he said.
But the last sentence was : We hope to see you again soon!
And I was screaming : What about tomorrow?
:laugh3: I don't think he heard it though.

At first I was afraid the reason they didn't talk much here is because they thought we won't understand a word. :( :D
But when I read all this experience that they did the same on other places, well...it made me feel so relieved. :laugh3:

It was a great night.
And I'm glad you had a great night too, alyssa! :)

Absolution may well be the easiest to get into, but in my opinion, you should work backwards.

BH&R: Mashup of styles, sometimes nodding towards Absolution, sometimes veering off in new directions.

Absolution: In most cases, a continuation of the heavierness found in Origin of Symmetry.

Origin of Symmetry: Revealed a different, harder, less piano-based Muse. If you like, it was a complete reinvention.

Showbiz: Can't really describe this, as I haven't listened to it much.

Martin's Recommendations

BH&R: Map of the Problematique, Assassin (if you can, get the Grand Omega Bosses edit), Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Knights of Cydonia.

Absolution: I would actually recommend the whole album, but in particular:
Apocalyspe Please, Stockholm Syndrome, Hysteria, .utterflies & Hurricanes, TSP (The Small Print), Thoughts of a Dying Atheist)

Origin of Symmetry: New Born, Bliss, Hyper Music, Citizen Erased, Darkshines, Feeling Good, Micro Cuts.

Showbiz: Sunburn, Muscle Museum, Filip, Cave, Showbiz, Uno, Unintended.

There you go.

Gah! His new cut and new guitar are both horrid. :( Well, his hair will grow....

Well, the guitar is still better than anything I'll ever get my hands on, but still.

And friggin' Micro Cuts and Unintended?! :bigcry: Why couldn't they play that a month ago? :bigcry:

I can't believe they're playing in Mississauga instead of Toronto. This is the THIRD time I've missed them (the reason this time being that Mississauga = suburb far away with little public transit access and the looming unfortunate reality of having to work in another city 45 minutes away and no car). This kind of breaks my heart. :( If a Wednesday night, WHY ARROW HALL. WHY. IT'S A CONVENTION CENTRE NEAR THE AIRPORT. GRRR.

it's awesome that Muse are playing older tracks .... definitely with a view to be playing them at Wembley i'm hoping.

I'd love Micro Cuts especially and a b side like Fury would be immense. Guitar also is quite stunning.

The haircut - Matt's hair always looks better long but it was getting very long and it will grow just nicely for Wembley haha :D

his hair was getting long ... and as you can see in the first gig with his new haircut (2nd pic) , it looked better :)

Yeah, I'm growing to like Cold War Kids myself - got the album a few weeks ago since it was 2/$25 at HMV, which makes this even more annoying since I actually kind of enjoy the opener. :( Have you seen the videos of them playing on the streets of Paris, Saint John and God Make Up Your Mind? Not bad stuff!
