-First, it's obvious to me that, even if it was brilliant, Muse's music did not really evolve between Showbiz and Absolution. If you listen to some songs like Futurism/Hysteria, Dead Star/Yes Please, Shine/Screenager, even Muscle Museum/Apocalypse Please... you'll notice that Matt uses many many times the same effects, chords, even lyrics.

-Then, I think Placebo's music changed a lot with each album, from a very teenage-sounding gothic rock to something much more mature, with some kind of adult desperation.

Anyway, don't misunderstand : I love both as much !

Btw, i dont really think starlight sounds coldplayish, its more rockish than most coldplay songs , in any case it sounds more 'blissish' to me, first time i listened to starlight, bliss came into my mind hehe but hey the vid is quite good, just a simple vid though i would've loved a sequel of the sing for absolution vid.. you know for the lyrics " far away, this ship is taking me far away" haha they should've called me to direct their vid :wacko:

British band Muse’s fourth album made its way to U.S. shelves last month to an unfortunate, undeserved lukewarm reception.

“Black Holes and Revelations” was released in the United States July 11, making its debut more than a week after it was released in European countries.

The follow-up to 2003’s “Absolution” sold 38,000 copies its first week in the United States and peaked at chart position No. 9 on the Billboard 200, but has been steadily falling downward ever since.

Singer Matthew Bellamy explained the meaning behind the title of the band’s fourth studio release in an interview for the September 2006 issue of Q Magazine: “Black holes and revelations -- they’re the two areas of song writing for me that make up the majority of this album. A revelation about yourself, something personal, something genuine of an everyday nature that maybe people can relate to. Then the black holes are these songs that are from the more... unknown regions of the imagination.”

There is no corresponding title track, but the title of the album can be found within the lyrics of second track and single “Starlight.”

Bellamy’s empathy-laden voice is slightly reminiscent of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke’s, if Yorke were a little younger and a little less laid-back.

He belts out painstakingly emotive lyrics in a falsetto tone that’s pure and raw, with gasping breaths taken in between verse lines that magnify the urgency of his message.

Track No. 5, short and sweet, supremely mellow and melancholy “Soldier’s Poem,” clocks in at just over two minutes. An anti-war ballad, it states “It’s a shame we’re all dying/And do you think you deserve your freedom” and “There’s no justice in the world/And there never was.”

“Assassin” has a faster tempo and a bit of a hard rock edge. The ninth track, “City of Delusion,” employs an orchestral-instrumental melody and a Spanish-sounding trumpet interlude.

The last track and first U.S. single, “Knights of Cydonia,” is an empowered anthem that asserts “No one’s gonna take me alive/The time has come to make things right.” It comprises a chorus to which the band members contribute, producing a vocal effect that sounds a little like old Queen, and an intro melody that has a bit of an old western sound to it.

However, the standout track on the album is the fourth, “Map of the Problematic.” It is a contagious fast-paced track with poppy techno undertones about lost love and the desperation that comes with it (“I can’t get it right/Get it right/Since I met you”).

Lingering drum beats, pounded-out piano chords and punchy guitar riffs set the tone for each song, rendering each individual tune’s sound upbeat, depressing or downright sexual.

Given the endless sea of cookie-cutter and sound-alike bands in existence, Muse is a godsend, pushing the musical envelope with spacey background effects, diverse melodies and heartfelt lyrics. “Black Holes and Revelations” is an ambient modern rock masterpiece. Songs go from apathetic and almost painfully slow to desperate and hurried in a heartbeat.

Muse has cruised under the music radar for far too long, unlike better-known, over-hyped and under-talented acts to come from the U.K. like Coldplay. What is currently one of the biggest musical acts in Europe barely registers a blip on the screen of the American music scene. Although i still like coldplay but they dont sound so good live anymore, i mean anyone here got the glaston 2005 dvd? Chris was so out of tune sometimes and wasnt as good as they used to sound live 4 years ago , on the other hand muse sounds like 20x better live than in studio . I could compare coldplay live to the smashing pumpkins, they sound amazing in studio but live theyu're are not so good or maybe is just me :uhoh:

But Matt - whose passion for conspiracy theories has inspired their songs - has fired a broadside at wily old Dubya in The White House.

He said: "I'm fascinated by conspiracy theories. We're surrounded by them.

"Are we really supposed to believe that a man in a cave in Afghanistan managed to orchestrate the most unbelievable attack on the United States of all time?

"I think 9/11 was definitely an inside job done by a group of high-powered people looking for an excuse to invade the Middle East for oil and other natural resources.

"I think America needed another Pearl Harbor-type event in order to invade Iraq. It gave the US and UK governments the perfect excuse to go to war."

I caught up with the singer when Muse - Dominic Howard, Chris Wolstenholme and Matt - played a sell-out gig at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh last week as part of T on the Fringe.

Now the group are coming back north of the border to play the SECC in Glasgow on November 7.

On September 4, new single Starlight is released as the follow-up to their smash hit, Super massive black hole. Muse filmed the Starlight video on a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles and it proved a stomachchurning experience.

Matt told me: "We wanted to create the idea of a band lost at sea because we see ourselves as being outside what's happening in the music scene.

"The first two hours on the ship were awful. We were all seasick. It would have helped if we hadn't been drinking the night before.

"But it was an epic feeling playing on a huge platform with the sea all around us."

Matt was gobsmacked when Black Holes And Revelations - the group's fourth studio album - was nominated for the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize 2006.

Muse have also received FIVE nominations in this year's Kerrang Awards - for best band, album, single, video and British band.

Matt said: "With this album we thought it was time for a change. We wanted to open some new doors.

"There was a danger we could have fallen into the trip of just going down the same musical path.

"It was a nice surprise when Black Holes went to No.1 in the UK charts. We feared the record was maybe a bit too diverse for some people.

"Releasing Super massive black hole as the first single was a deliberate shock tactic. It was the opposite of anything we'd done before. But we wanted to create a stir."

Muse's latest truly a 'Revelation'

"Black Holes and Revelations" marks the fifth album released by the British rock trio Muse, a band whose unique sound, immense talent and raw energy have catapulted them to the forefront of the UK alternative scene.

Muse's sound is perhaps best described as two parts Radiohead, two parts Nirvana and one part Rachmaninov. Such a description nonetheless falls short, as Muse's influences are innumerable and the band has invented itself just as much as it has fed from other inspirations.

Fans of Muse's previous work may initially be taken aback with their first listen through of "Black Holes," as the album makes radical stylistic departures from their previously acclaimed "Absolution" and "Origin of Symmetry." Layers of electronic melodies, dance beats, nifty effects, flamenco guitars and brass instruments are new and play a prominent role.

The album kicks off with "Take A Bow," a politically charged opening that warns the world's politicians, "You'll burn in hell for your sins." It's powerful, both musically and lyrically, and other parts of the album carry similar political undertones.

The love song that follows, "Starlight," is about a space traveler who leaves his home and significant other light-years behind. Like the political messages of "Take A Bow," the sci-fi themes present in "Starlight" recur throughout "Black Holes."

"Starlight" is perhaps the prettiest song of the album, possessing an airy piano riff that should remind listeners of Coldplay. The third track, "Supermassive Black Hole," is unabashedly pop-rock. Released as a single before the album's debut, it's a fun tune that steals the dance floor back from the rap and hip-hop genres.

"Map Of The Problematique" is an epic collage of electronic beats, piano and guitar, which combine with frontman Matt Bellamy's falsetto vocals to form the most mesmerizing track of the album. As the electronic drums fade, the mood turns somber in "Soldier's Poem," a simple ballad in which a disenchanted soldier at war tells his country that it doesn't deserve the freedom he's fighting for.

The harmonized vocals featured in this song would do Queen proud, and reappear in many of the later tracks. "Invincible," an uplifting song about overcoming odds, immediately lifts off the dismal fog of the song preceding it. Muse fans will triumphantly belt out the inspirational chorus again and again.

"Assassin," a high-octane whirlwind of metal style guitar, truly showcases the band's energy. The verse once again takes on a political tone, urging for a violent overthrow of "demonocracy."

"Exo-Politics," on the other hand, is less about real politics and more about the conspiracy theory of an alien race secretly governing the planet Earth. The sci-fi lyrics here are intriguing, but some will find this track to be musically dull.

"City Of Delusion" is a pulse-pounding, dramatic piece of prog rock with flamenco guitar, strings and a lone horn that simply must be heard to be believed - one of the album's best.

As the album begins to come to a close, "Hoodoo" carries it into the darkness with a sinister, Rachmaninov-inspired piano melody. Once the piano is silenced, the sound of galloping horses thunders into the aural foreground amidst sirens and spaceship laser fire - this is the beginning of "Knights of Cydonia," the album's best and closing song.

With Cydonia, past and future, Wild West and outer space combine to form a sprawling epic masterpiece. The climax approaches as Bellamy sings, "No one's gonna take me alive," and then a rocking guitar solo takes the album to its culmination. In "Black Holes and Revelations," Muse's musical talent and versatility reach new heights.

No alternative rock aficionado should miss it.

i was just out for dinner at grandparents and was reading the music section of the age. it announced that muse are going to tour at the start of next year in australia. their melbourne show is on the 30th (i'm ns about the others) but thought i'd let everyone know so they don't miss out on tickets.

I think they are very very different.
A. The first ver. is really more energic, sounds like a reproach, whereas there's a sort of regret in Shine Acoustic.
B. Some little differences between the lyrics : you know, in "Shine" he says "I believed that you'd always be here", which makes it seem more nostalgic than "Shine Acoustic"'s "We believe that you'll always be here"...

Anyway I see them as two complete different songs. And I love both, of course.

Kangaroo Blues is a live CD released in Australia (I bought it as an Import, and I think it's everything but official, but it didn't cost much...).
It features Muse live performance at Sydney's Big Day Out January 24th 2004, and a slice of Muse live in Cardiff 01.12.2003 (including Citizen Erased followed by something titled "Piano Interlude", which is definitely the Take A Bow intro.)
