Summer of 99', i first listenede to suburn and it totally blew me away.. i mean wow, i was like floating after that song, the piano and that awesome guitar riff was just great and i didnt even know who was that band but then like 2 weeks later i listened to muscle museum and oh-my-god i sooo could relate myself to the lyrics at that time , i fell in love with muse after that forever and ever amen :o

Spring 2005... Apocalypse Please... my brother had Absolution and we listened to it on the way back from a trip. Blew me away. I had to learn the piano immediately. So I downloaded some sheet music....then 6 months passed before I bought Origin and Showbiz....and the rest is history. :D

Yep I got standing! Don't really like the venue because it's too big!!

4th time seeing them WAHOOOOOO

You're going to see them in Newcastle aren't you? What date is that?

swallowedinamessage
20-07-2006, 02:21 PM
when a band is less known they will play in smaller venues, obviously and its always much more intimate like that but when a band is big, like Muse are now, they are forced to play in bigger venues ... but with Muse being such an awesome live band it more than makes up for it ;)

yep in Newcastle on the 21st i think?! i'll have to check that one again but it will be great! the Scottish & irish dates are at the start of November aren't they? .. you'll get to see them first you lucky thing!

fifi
20-07-2006, 02:25 PM
Yeah I know. Even when they were playing huge venues in England, they'd still only play theatres here but play for 2 nights.

I've seen them at small venues here, a festival and in earls court and they can rip it up at any venue really it's just the atmosphere at the smaller ones is AMAZING!

Ah I love muse! Cannot wait now :p Yep they play here on the 3rd of november!! I just hope my exams aren't around then! :o

Hammerstein Ballroom is just that.. an old big ballroom.. so I am glad they are still playing an intimate venue in NYC! :wink3: Its pretty decent in size.. but much better and bigger than that of Webster Hall..

^^^ That set list on the DVD is awesome!

I was so excited to see them, but then I saw that only nosebleed seats are available for their show in Detroit next Friday, so now I'm a little upset.

BUT thel local radio station is giving away tickets ( and they usually have the best seats or floor GA) and it qualifies you to win the grand prize of playing poker before the show with the band!!!!!! So all day tomorrow I will be camped out by the radio and I hope to at least win the tickets.
The grand prize would be AWESOME too.
But I really can't play poker.:P

Megalomania is anti-religion, but that's in general.

i don't think i'd call it anti religion ... its a song that questions the meaning of life, but doesn't mention religion and people's beliefs specifically... the song can be taken in many different contexts .. only Matt Bellamy knows the true meaning of Megalomania.

By anti-christ i'm thinking of bands such as Black Sabbath and lots of death metal music. i never can listen to any of that as it makes no sense and isn't even justifiable as music.

amsterdam528
25-07-2006, 01:52 AM
Well I read somewhere that the use of the church organ was an ironic juxtaposition against the anti-religious lyrics.

But of course, everything's open to interpretation. I'm sure Matt has said something about the meaning in some interview.

swallowedinamessage
25-07-2006, 02:36 AM
ah yeah you could be right then :) i like Megalomania, it sounds like someone talking and questioning what they are doing in their life and what they will get out of it ... perhaps thinking until they come across a mindblowing thought such as death and there being no more .. or going to heaven, with God ... .

25-07-2006, 05:57 PM

you will be able to get tickets because others can't go but as you said, they will be a lot more expensive. there are always tickets on ebay you can look for but these are also expensive.

Muse are nothing like Coldplay. Plus Muse released their first album in 1999, which was before Coldplay's first album Parachutes was released.

Alien ancestors, giant meteorites, cod-classical pomp rock. Matt Bellamy, main man of Muse, bemuses Stephen Dalton

In keeping with his reputation as Britrock’s reigning maestro of overblown melodrama, Matt Bellamy lives in a grand old villa overlooking Lake Como in northern Italy. The Sicilian opera composer Vincenzo Bellini was a former resident. The Muse frontman denies that he dons a cape in the dead of night and haunts the building’s shadowy depths. However, he is building his studio in a cave beneath the villa. Perfect.

“It’s quite common there, because all the properties are built on the side of mountains,” Bellamy explains. “Lots of people have outbuildings built into caves.”

With his wiry frame, sharp features and spiky thatch of raven hair, Bellamy resembles a cross between Edward Scissorhands and a consumptive Tom Cruise. He is engaging and chatty company, if a little on the nutty side. We meet near his London flat, in the looming shadow of the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square. The Muse singer now divides his time between Britain and Lake Como to be with his Italian girlfriend, a psychology student.

“It does change your perspective on the UK music scene,” he says. “You realise how self-inflated it is. You see bands that are so unbelievably hyped in the UK, but they come to Italy and play in front of 500 people. Out there, it’s really not about how many drinks they’ve been having or who their girlfriends are.”

European exile makes sense for Bellamy. Muse have been defiant outsiders to Britpop’s metropolitan inner circle ever since he, the drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Chris Wolstenholme first burst out of the sleepy Devon backwater of Teignmouth seven years ago.

Nowadays they play stadium-sized shows like Edinburgh’s T on the Fringe and the Carling Weekend, both set for late August. But critical acceptance has been slow in coming.

Muse’s first inclusion on this year’s Mercury Music Prize shortlist marks something of a turning point. Their latest album, Black Holes and Revelations, has been universally well reviewed. And yet it is their most extravagant creation yet, a roaring great cyclotron of cod-classical bombast and raging paranoia. The sleeve was even designed by Storm Thorgerson, best known for his trippy covers for Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Bellamy argues that Wagnerian Sturm und Drang has become so unfashionable that it is perversely credible. “Bands come along every now and again to neutralise the flamboyance of rock,” he says. “The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Nirvana, even the White Stripes. They take it back to basics again, but to me that’s become almost the conservative way. What we are doing is kind of punk. To be flamboyant and excessive and over the top is more against the system than what most bands are doing.”

Even America has begun to embrace Muse, after their 2002 album, Origin of Symmetry, was rejected as too European by their US label. “For English bands to be super-big in America, you have to do the U2 class,” Bellamy says sniffily. “A little bit of gospel, a little bit of country, a whisper of blues. I think Coldplay watched Rattle and Hum a few times and found the key to American success.”

Muse’s steady ascent has included majestic highs and tragic lows, sometimes simultaneously. When the trio headlined at Glastonbury in 2004, it cemented their growing commercial and critical clout. But half an hour after watching the show, Howard’s father collapsed and died of a heart attack on the festival site.

“That was pretty tough for Dom,” frowns Bellamy. “It was the fact that he hadn’t seen him for so long that made it so difficult. We cancelled a few gigs, and we all went down to Devon for a week or so, hanging around with Dom and his family. We considered stopping touring, full-stop. But it was Dom who wanted to go back on the road.”

Although he rarely discusses it, Bellamy has family ties to the first Britpop boom. One of the sly musical allusions on Black Holes and Revelations is the galloping synthesizer melody in Knights of Cydonia, a homage to the 1962 chart-topper Telstar by the Tornados. Bellamy’s father George played in the Tornados, and partly inspired him to form Muse.

“It was just in the fact that my dad was a big record collector,” Bellamy says, “and there were always guitars and pianos around the house. He lives in Spain now. I think he plays in some pub band down there.”

Bellamy has long been a keen consumer of internet conspiracy theories, but Black Holes and Revelations charts whole new galaxies of apocalyptic hysteria. With its howled warnings about “our leaders” colluding with alien invasion and lost civilisations on Mars, the album contains more sci-fi paranoia than an entire series of The X-Files. In the course of our afternoon together, Bellamy shares some spectacularly ripe theories: mankind is descended from alien interbreeding; geometric patterns link the Pyramids of Giza, Washington DC, and the surface of Mars with the Orion’s Belt constellation; the Beatles were a front for a clandestine think-tank brainwashing American youth. Oh, and The Da Vinci Code is grounded in fact.

“It’s serious to me, all this,” Bellamy says with a pained smile. “But at the same time I’m able to laugh at it. I know when people like David Icke start coming out with this stuff, the initial reaction of most people is to laugh. I’m able to do that as well. The only difference is I do believe this stuff, and I do want to try and communicate some of it subtly, through some of the songs.”

During a recent promotional trip to New York, Bellamy insisted on conducting interviews in a helicopter. Online rumours had convinced him that a giant meteorite impact was about to unleash a tsunami, wiping out Manhattan. More seriously, he insists that the global banking system is a centuries-old cartel intent on trapping the human race into economic slavery. To anyone with a mortgage, this is hardly news.

But surely Muse’s main songwriter must have a bank account for his royalties? “I keep mostly cash, to be honest,” he says. “It’s best to convert it into real objects, or give it away.”

Perhaps, I suggest, Bellamy’s paranoia results from smoking too many illicit substances? “No, not for a long time,” he says. “I had a strong relationship with mushrooms at the time of Origin of Symmetry. But at one point I said: ‘I’ve seen enough,’ and I haven’t been near them since.”

The circular logic of Bellamy’s theories could keep us arguing all day, so in the end we agree to differ. But what is beyond question is that British rock needs grandiose, passionate, crackpot visionaries like Muse.

They have released one of the year’s finest albums, and are certain to unleash a mighty musical firework display in Edinburgh next month. In a pop scene dominated by overpraised indie weaklings, the phantom of the rock opera always delivers.

Muse were AMAZING last night. Absolutly mind blowing. God.

I went with my twin sister and a friend, and ran into about 5 other people that I knew, most that were friends of my brothers. On of his friends got right on the barrier, the lucky bastard. Even though he had red marks on his stomach after the concert. When we were waiting in line everyone started cheering and then we see chris and dom (wearing BRIGHT yellow pants) walk across the street to the go kart place. Some people went over there and I think met them and got autograph's, but I didn't want to lose my place because we were already moved into a seperate line. We were in line at about 6, doors were at 8. They took away our water, so I was really thirsty during the show.

So yeah, the concert. Right when Muse came on the crowd just PUSHED and I was squished. I was dying for water during the concert but I didn't want to lose my place. I had some trouble breathing because the air was so hot and heavy and thick. I lost my friend and sister in the first song, but found my sister in the middle. My friend went off to the side because she's pretty little and didn't like being it that much. Oh, she's the same friend I went to the Coldplay concert with earlier this year. She's on this board as well but I don't know if she still comes. Some people in the crowd were really nice, like when I went down to tie my show since it was undone and it would get stepped on and I'd fall. This guy was like "Come on guys, everyone surround her so she doesn't get hurt." So I had like this barrier of people around me which was really nice of them.

Somehow, during the concert I had a great view. I don't even know how, but I had a really good view of Matt the entire time.;) Some of my favourites that they played were Starlight, Plug in Baby, Knights of Cydonia, Apocolypse Please, Invincible...Didn't play Dark Shines though (but I wished they did).

So yeah, that's my story. One of the best concerts I've ever been to, they were awesome. I loved it when matt played the guitar behind his head.

*sigh* It was wonderful.

The matter is that there's not much information in the booklet...

I think it's like Absolution, (you know, composed by Bellamy/Howard/Wolstenholme and Written by Bellamy), because it seems to be the direction they follow.

Yep U're right ! i love this song and i really find the lyrics wonderful, mainly the end :
I've had recurring nightmares
I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity
To be a better man...

And it's very easy to play (4 1/2 chords)

Beautiful song.

"Although their slower songs are traditionally the weaker points on their albums, a performances of "A Soldier's Poem" and "Invincible" provided a time to catch one's breath or, at the very least, get your ass out of the pit if you valued your life"

Scew the songs being weaker. But I did see a good few people scrambling out. Or in some cases violently shoving people to get out.

Well, you know, I think there was room for Spiral Static, Futurism and Fury on the former three albums, and I love those songs. I think their reason is that they have to set one song as extra-Japan song on each album, 'coz i know the Japanese love all bonus and collector's things...

i loved this butterflies and hurricanes versions but i just think the guitar detracts from the beauty of the song. i mean the beauty lies in the piano for this piece... and how it is complimented so well by dom's drumming and chris's wonderful bass lines. the whole piano solo, that's where the amazing part of the song is, it's supposed to be the whole climatic point in the piece, but it's kind of stripped away by the guitar... in my opinion...

ehm... :huh2: i don't understand how you could love the first three but not like the newest one...? it's the most outstanding imo...

edit; on second thought all 4 are equally amazing, i can't choose. but horrible? that's a strong word.

I think it's possible to like the three former albums and not to like the newest, because Muse's style on Black Holes and Revelations is quite different...

But, yeah, I love them all and I can't choose one either !

Haha, I must agree with you on that.

I'm a big Muse fan from back when Coldplay were supporting them in 150 capacity venues...Chris Martin trying to flog CD's at the end of the gig...:)

Anyway, their music used to have such good melodies but I can barely listen to the new one.....2 or 3 tracks but that's it.

I think when making it they got too excited & carried away on all the new 'little' ideas and styles that they put into the songs and thought that this made the songs great......forgetting about actually writing a decent song that doesn't use the same classical chord progressions and some lack-luster melodies as before....

Don't get me wrong, I still like Muse, I think as 'musicians' they are great....and I've seen them get better and better at that over time. I used to get quite obsessed about Matts guitar craziness when I was learning the guitar.....learning all the parts and watching live gigs, as they used to be absolutely mental.
Oops.

Sunburn (Tim Maas Sunstroke Remix) from Muscle Museum Pt.1 EP [USA version],

Please? :)

Also, is "Piano Solo" the same thing as "Piano Thing" from New Born Pt.1?

lol i realised this about half an hour ago but can't find it :( ... i would love your help if you could tell me where it is! please :)

for the UK release of Knights of Cydonia i would expect they would have different b-sides to a radio edit!

Is KoC going to be released in the uk?

I thought it was an USA release instead of supermassive

Yep KoC was released in the US instead of Supermassive, but it
may be the third or fourth single in other countries.

great pics, thanks for posting! :) Matt is looking good as always..

if I had to choose my favourite muse album then it would probably be Origin of Symmetry, it's as perfects as any album could ever be imo.. New Born, Bliss, Citizen Erased, PiB, Dark Shines...

but it's not an easy choice, I've been listening to Showbiz a LOT recently, a brilliant album with great songs... AND like everyone (in this thread at least ;)) I'm totally addicted to BHAR.. and Absolution was the album that made me realize what a great band Muse is..

but I still pick OoS..:nice:

My fave would definatley be Absolution, but BHAR is coming very close.

according to muse.mu:

The new single is out on September 4th. CD1 will contain Starlight and the new b-side Easily. A full to the brim DVD contains the video, extended making of, interactive gallery with audio stems of Starlight to play with, as well as a hidden track tucked away.

:stunned:
A hidden track? Wonder what that will be..?
Some live version perhaps?

Yeah I also want it so bad !

OK I love "Starlight" more and more, but I think it can never overtake "Citizen Erased" in my heart. I think it's the most beautiful thing Matthew ever composed (maybe ex-aequo with "Space Dementia") !

Their new album is really amazing.
Although it is more electronic, I find it refreshing and innovative.

Yeah, that's right ! Well, I think it's a good thing that they did something really different this time. It makes me think of an interview of Brian Molko (I luv Placebo) for a French magazine, about the release of Placebo's Best Of (Once More With Feeling) : (Translated into English by me...)

Journalist : There are two brand new songs, including something unusual, a song of optimistic love ("I Do"). Don't you think the audience could dislike it ?

Molko : Well, if people don't like change, they should listen to Muse, they've done the same thing for five years...

With Black Holes, this can't be said any more.

:dozey: i never knew he said that! :stunned:

he obviously needs to listen to each of Muse's albums a bit more and then he'll hear a difference with each ... anyway the difference between Placebo's albums is no more than the difference in sound to Muse's albums!
