Aw, how nice of you! My brother could never be that forward thinking. He said he would buy me an iTunes voucher after I told him that I wanted the TEED album. And I still haven't seen that a week later :laugh3:
yeah,
ohw that sucks
I got even an idea for a card to put the confirmation mail in :wink3: her b-day is the 26th so I don't think I'll have the physical tix by next week :p
To anyone who didn't get tickets, last time round, I got tickets for the arena shows because I thought this was a last chance to see them or something, what with the rumours of them just wanting to do singles, and "scale down". I got tickets for that, for the stadium shows, and then for the Reading performance after that. There will always be another chance to see them. Don't worry too much! :)
I was just able to purchase a second standing ticket via regular sale for Anna Banana (SueDeNimes).

^ Hah, I can't wait to see the fashion choices of 2nd Law Era; I feel like they are going to top what we have seen so far.
I love the glasses though
Ohh I bet they are; my parents always go on about them and show pictures of them to us each Christmas (sometimes my Mum is like 'it's a shame you can't remember'-- I was 6 months old )
I hope it's not too embarrassing ... the glasses were okay, but what if - for example - he comes up with a pink tutu? :P
Hahaha, of course you don't remember, but maybe you could refresh your memories one day. :wacky:
Nattatouille
14-06-2012, 02:27 PM
^To be fair, it wouldn't surprise me if one day Dom wore a tutu-- it's such a Dom thing to do  With Matt though, who knows? :laugh3:
One day I will; I've already said to myself I'm going to start putting money aside so I can go travelling a bit. Time it right and I will see it no doubt.
Yeah, it's a Dom-thing, haha. :anxious:
That is awesome, travelling is one of the best things there is.

Dom isn't all bad. His coloured skinnies thing is awesome-- as an individual that wears coloured skinny jeans, it makes me proud. He's like a role model
Yeah, now I have finished uni I can do things like that... Eventually.

The site Muse used for their North American presales last tour. It worked out pretty well. Most tickets were GA. You didn't have to register or anything for it so there were still lots of scalpers, but lots of casual fans didn't know the site even existed.
Ah, thank you. I didn't do the presale when I bought tickets so I have no experience with it. :P
I'm so sorry that you didn't get tickets Kelly. I really am trying wrap my mind around how such a large arena could get sold out so quickly.

I'm not sure; never posting. Is it listed on Musebay?
Thing is I would be dubious getting tickets this early because we don't have any real confirmation. The GigsandTours confirmation email is so easy to fake as is SeeTickets. Ticketmaster and Crowdsurge are harder-- but still easy enough with a bit of time.

Ah yes, the days of me posting "So this cool Muse-related thing happened to me today..." like every day. Not gonna have that this year since I won't be seeing them this year (unless they do the 10-song-set holiday circuit again like in 2009).

Yeah I heard that too-- that it should be tomorrow night on Zane Lowe's show. But I follow Zane on Twitter and he hasn't said anything one way or another. Lots of people are saying that the Beeb have confirmed it but I see no real source of confirmation.
I'm not saying it is impossible but I'm not staying in and listening to Zane just in case. Plus my brother is back from Ibiza so I'd imagine my house is going to be busy :dozey:

They've been one of my favorite bands since high school. Their three previous albums are awesome. Therefore, I expected as much from this one. The only fault I have is that I didn't take the warning signs (Adam Levine saying it'd be their "poppiest" album yet, Wiz Khalifa being featured, etc.) seriously. But enough about that. I'll save my epic Maroon 5 rant for the Maroon 5 thread.

Maroon 5 has been my guilty pleasure as well. And I agree-- although I thought the third album was a little :\ I felt it in my waters that this album wasn't going to be nice so I avoided it... Rather glad I did  Sorry it was such a disappoint.

'New song 'Survival' has been selected by the Olympics to be the main official song for the London 2012 Olympics
Matt wrote the song with the Olympics in mind - it's about total conviction and pure determination to win
The song will be played throughout the games within stadiums and on international sports TV coverage.' (From their Twitter)
The artwork and font is hideous imho.

I would've liked us to hear a definite album track too... At least that way we would have an idea of where the era was headed.
With a single that could be a standalone that was made for the Olympics it will have the same(ish) era vibes but won't give us that much of a representation. Just look at NSC comparatively to the rest of TR.

Basically:
- Lyrics are pure cheese. Sugar coated cheese. Injecting cheese into your veins.
- The prelude is really nice, super expansive and all like WHOAA.
- The choir are scary as bollocks. It sounds like they are all possessed. We need an exorcism up in here. They kill the mood.
- Matt's voice is all over the range. It's like he didn't really know where to play. It reminds me of (someone smite me for saying this) Jessie J.
- Guitar riffs are pretty good.
- There are so many ideas going on here. Just too many. Fuck's sake, I feel like we are through every emotion and thought in 5 minutes. Which might work in terms of it being Olympic-y but it makes have a headache.
So in conclusion: not their worst. Not their best. Meh. It's a pretty decent Olympic track though.

Pretty cool song, but I think it's a bit loud/aggressive to be an Olympic theme jaja. I kind of enjoyed the loud bombastic-ness of it, but it doesn't quiet speak to me like most Muse songs do. I kind of like it on first listen though. The prelude's amazing too.
Honestly, I feel like ETIAW would make the perfect Olympic song, is that weird of me? It's got a good rebellion/let's-kick-some-ass feel, esp in the second verse (although I guess ETIAW is predicated on things kind of sucking in certain ways).
What to say about this? Honestly music for retards.
Another thing I don't like of this song is that it could have easily been on The Resistance (because of the orchestrated arrangement and the obvious Queen influences)

So far I'm impartial to this song. The choir doesn't really annoy me that much, but there's to much going on. This could be helped if it had a really good mix, but I also think it's lacking in that aspect. I don't like the way Matt sings towards the end. Kind of sounds like he's goofing off or something. And I usually don't hate on lyrics but these are pretty cheesy.
The instrumentation is great though and the writing is alright. So yeah, maybe after a few listens, but upon first listen I'm impartial.

...
Call me stupid, but I'm enamored with "Survival."
Yes, you heard right. Enamored. It has so many things that I love in music. A common complaint is that there's too much going on. I've always loved stuff where you can dissect it and hear so many different things going on. It's why I like Baroque music so much; its use of polyphony and ornamentation makes you pay attention to what's going on instead of getting bored with it.
People have also complained that they don't like the choir. I, for one, am a huge fan of choral music (especially sacred choral music, which is weird in itself because I'm not religious, but that's another topic entirely), and I think it gives the song some depth. The amount of piano in there is pleasing to me as well, even though I felt like it could've been emphasized more in a few spots.
I'm not saying it's perfect, because it's not. When I heard it the first time (Thanks to Christina for the link, BTW), I wasn't sure it was Matt who was singing until it got to the first "I'M GONNA WIIIIIN." The first half doesn't sound like Matt at all. While I imagine a lot of that is because he doesn't sing in his lower register all that much, it was still kinda weird for me. Having said that, I agree with someone's previous comment (I think it was Sarah?) about the second half being much better than the first half.
So yeah. I'm a fan. I love it. Say what you want. Muse, welcome back.

It's completely OTT and bonkers, but that was one of the things that first made me fall in love with Muse. It's bombastic and not in the least bit subtle which is exactly what a song for the Olympics should be IMO. As someone else said (can't remember who, sorry) i'm completely over the backing vocals at the start of the song now. OK, i got what I don't like about it, Survival just tries to hard to be huge, awesome and amazing...it makes United States of Eurasia almost seems like a Bon Iver intimist song. It was build to be a huge hymn, something between We Are The Champions and a classical piece but at the same time is not good enough to sound that huge, get it? I mean, if you want to play that big you need a trully great tune like Viva La Vida, Bohemian Rhapsody or even USOE and Survival is just not that good. I do hope that's not how The 2nd Law will sound like.

They took progressions straight out of a piece that they ended up using anyway, and the song they built wasn't as good as the one they borrowed from (pardon the "rip-off").
Rappers take small segments, loops, and as you say, samples. Eurasia is, to put it crudely, a 21st Century rock version of a Chopin piece; whereas any good rap song that samples is not an update on its sample.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a clever piece of work, I just think it's not quite as ingenious as say, Butterflies and Hurricanes, as a concept, as a song, as a piece of music.
Violet
29-06-2012, 12:11 AM
WTF? No it's not. The only Chopin bit in there is "Collateral Damage," which of course makes sense because "Collateral Damage" is just a Chopin nocturne with a backing string arrangement and some background noise. USoE being in the same key as CD doesn't make it an extended version of the Chopin nocturne. Also, you need to learn the definition of chord progression; this is the second time now that you've used it incorrectly.
Hopey

I think this may be their worst song (counting singles only). Didn't they had enough wannabe Queen moments already? This sounds like trash from Resistance and bad copy of Queen. Such a disappointment.

The second time, I didn't say chord progression. I simply said progression. The progression of the Muse song aligns, in places, with the progression of the Chopin song.
I also didn't say that it was an extended version. I said it was an update. It follows the patterns of the Chopin piece. It utilises the same build techniques of the piece.
I don't want to get all high and mighty and bring out the "I'm a musician" card, because I can't read a note of music. I play keyboard however, I have the score for Eurasia + CD and I only ever play CD because I find it a better version. They're very similar.
If you don't hear it, that's cool, I'm not forcing you into my opinion. They sound similar to me, that's all. I'm not gonna get all aggressive on your ass.
(As for Survival. It starts with the first two chords of Bb and Ebm. Eurasia starts with Eb and G#m. This is the same pattern, unless I'm very much mistaken.)
I agree with pretty much all this comment. It could of come straight out of The Resistance era. Except it's slightly more flamboyant. Like they looked at The Resistance and went-- we can expand the horizon for flamboyance. Let's go one more step.

(As for Survival. It starts with the first two chords of Bb and Ebm. Eurasia starts with Eb and G#m. This is the same pattern, unless I'm very much mistaken.)
Actually, the E-flat minor doesn't kick in until after the song starts on B-flat, goes into E-flat major, and goes back between those two keys again. Also, after USoE starts on E-flat, it goes into an Fm7, then E-flat, then A-flat minor (which makes more sense than saying it's in G-sharp because E-flat doesn't have any sharps in its key. Yeah, they're enharmonic, but I'm choosing to be pedantic right now.). At any rate, even if you WERE right, it takes more than two chords to make a chord progression. (You can make a cadence with two chords, yes, but not a progression.)
Oh, and about that other stuff. Just because you have the same chord progression going on in two songs (OMG, because that NEVER happens. /sarcasm), that doesn't mean one's trying to imitate the other. Yeah, there's the same foundation, but it's not the same song. Matt's vocal melody isn't in Chopin's work, y'know. Neither are the string bits or anything else they added to it. They might have used the chord progression, but they didn't use the melody, so it can't be called an "update," or whatever the hell it is you're calling it.

Totally random and I'm not a Muse fan (well I like them, but I only know the hit singles and I've never been interested enough to look up more of their songs, anyway.. ) but yesterday I listened to Unintended for the first time in years and I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Anyway, go on :nice::escaping2:
Listen to Origin of Symmetry! DO IT! :D
I still have no idea if I like Survival or not. It will be so so so weird to hear this all throughout the Olympics.
I can already picture the recaps with Matt's "YES I'M GONNA WIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!!" in the background. :freak:

But seriously, no Wemblayyyy then?
Wembley isn't gonna happen for me. Period. I could very well go to a dozen North American shows, but flying overseas for Muse just isn't gonna be practical for me yet again. Not to mention a dozen shows here wouldn't cost any more than flying to 2 shows at Wembley.

Yeah. It's going to be full of Union Jacks and I feel that is ironic considering Matt's so anti-establishment.
I'm going to get sick of it though.

Unintended is indeed a beautiful song.
If you want to listen to a full album, I'd suggest Absolution (their 3rd album). It's friendlier than the first two, imo, though it encompasses elements from these two first albums and the following two as well, both in a lyrical sense and a musical one. All in all, it's a good way to be introduced to Muse, I'd say.
If you'd like to listen to individual songs, here are some (I'll list very few songs because I fear a very long list may put one off):
Muse Hysteria, V-Festival 2008 - YouTube
Muse - Feeling Good [Live From Wembley Stadium] - YouTube
Muse - Hoodoo [Live From Wembley Stadium] - YouTube
The only criteria I used was: these are some of their songs that sound really good live (which is a constant in Muse domain). The last two videos are from HAARP, their live dvd (one of them, at least). A lot of the songs from that dvd are up on their youtube channel.
I hope it was useful somehow and that you enjoy listening to Muse :nice:

If the 2nd Law is Muse's MX, that would mean I'll be disowning them, declaring them dead, and being ashamed of all the money I've spent on them over the years. (except more so because I've probably only spent a few hundred on Coldplay while I've spent a couple thousand on Muse tickets and travel expenses :P)
I don't know if you joking or not, but, honestly, however disappointed you're with a band because of their newest material, it isn't reason enough to erase everything else that the band has meant to you.
Corkus
29-06-2012, 08:31 PM
Not joking, I did it with Coldplay. I doubt it'll happen with Muse, though, just because even if Muse goes in a negative direction with this album, they won't stoop to the crowd-pleasing lows that Coldplay did for the sake of popularity with VLV and especially MX. Changing to be "like Queen" is a whole different beast than changing to be "like whoever has the #1 hit at the moment regardless of genre". I mean, I don't really like much of what U2's put out since the mid-90's, but I still love them anyway. They changed, but not for popularity reasons.
suzanafg
29-06-2012, 09:07 PM
I disagree about MX (and VLV) being what they are just for the sake of fame or popularity, but I won't linger on the subject.
What I meant is that you probably had very good reason to like Coldplay (or some other band) in the first place and that their recent moves, if you dislike them, wouldn't rub away this reason.

I do agree with you on this point.
But I do also see Michael's point. Coldplay has meant significantly less to me since MX-- to the point where I dismiss them a lot of the time. They disappointed me and what they did in the past is somewhat diminished because you know where they will go in the future.

That sounds very reasonable and understandable. I just wouldn't agree that everything else Coldplay did should be completely ignored because of MX (which isn't your point, of course).

I love the video for the song, it fits perfectly.
And also, the song has definitely been growing on me. I still wouldn't consider it one of their top twenty songs, but it's far from the bottom where it started out.

Whenever I think of the word "madness", I think of the band Madness. :laugh3:
I called "Follow Me" being this album's obligatory cheesy ballad everyone hates in the style of GL and Invincible back when those track names were first leaked like 4 months ago, and I'm sticking with that prediction, especially given its similar placement if this track order holds true.
(on a side note, my gf was drunk in my car a few nights ago and started singing "Bliss" out the window at almost midnight and it was pretty much the funniest thing ever)

Going by that logic, Survival is the United States of Eurasia of this album. More than plausible.

So that means:
Uprising -> Madness
Resistance -> Panic Station
Undisclosed Desires -> I guess Prelude?
United States of Eurasia -> Survival
Guiding Light -> Follow Me
Unnatural Selection -> ???
MK Ultra -> Explorers?
The rest is unclear...

Unless of course Prelude is part of the same track as Survival.
If they had half a brain cell between them they'd do something a little bit different to The Resistance, considering it's their least popular effort since Showbiz.

Pretty sure Prelude is separate just because Survival is currently only available to purchase without it. Just think of it like Interlude on Abso.
That and I don't want to see the equivalent to Undisclosed Desires since that song deserves to be forgotten in the deepest abyss. :P

Undisclosed Desires live was like Broadway intermission. Time to nap or pee, or if you're trapped on the barrier, time to take pretty photos for 4 minutes.
Sadly, it's probably popular enough to bring back next tour. Eww.

I felt that way about Eurasia. And Guiding Light was appalling on record, and live. Unnatural Selection should've been replaced with New Born at Wembley. Resistance is U2-lite shite.
And I didn't actually mind The Resistance all that much, believe it or not.

I guess they realised how many people hated UD, so instead of making an equivalent song on T2L they decided to fill its spot with an instrumental :laugh3:

Hated Eurasia on record, thought it was much better live.
Guiding Light live made me consider shooting myself. Sadly, guns weren't allowed in any of the venues.
I actually loved Unnatural Selection.
Resistance was...middling. Transitioning it into Starlight was stupid as hell, though, since they're basically the same song.

Resistance is just so MOR it might as well be a Snow Patrol song. Ooh, 1984-themed lyrics, so original.
Unnatural Selection just sounds like a poor New Born.

That's precisely the reason why I'm so lax with it. It's their first one, and they were 18-19 when it was released. Matt himself said they had no idea what they were doing when they recorded it. Despite all that, it's still a solid album. Some of the songs on that album will be forever dear to me. ("Escape" comes to mind.)

It's not that they're bad, it's that they're lazy more than anything else.

It's an alright album, it's just not found the strengths of the band yet, and certainly not found the bombast.
Ironically to that though, I think the highlights are Falling Down and Unintended.

As much as I like Showbiz, it tries way hard to be OK Computer. Muse hasn't had much Radiohead in them since, but that first effort's haunted them critic-wise.
Showbiz the song, though, is a top 5 for me.

Oh yeah, Fillip is a weird one as well
For some reason I'm not that keen on songs like Unintended, Falling Down, Soldier's Poem etc. I'm not saying I don't like those songs exactly, I just prefer to hear Muse's more rocky stuff. Even songs like Starlight and Time Is Running Out I would rather listen to.
