To the people here who are not trying to work out many years of frustration, abuse, and manipulation, I ask that you look up the last few threads Mark posted in before you judge either side too quickly.

The definition of an internet troll is someone who is disruptive for attention or personal amusement.

Apparently, a large group of girls who were tired of arguing got the message and finally learned how to ignore Mark completely. This is the first time I have ever seen that happen on this board. Normally when people ignore him it doesn't last very long for many reasons. So I payed very close attention to his behavior once an entire group had finally succeeded in doing the seemingly impossible. It was a group of mainly teenage girls who had set up a thread full of -basically- pure girl talk. Something he had nothing to do with. He interjected non-sequiters every few posts. When no one reacted to these he went into other threads and whined about how unfair it was that he was being ignored by these girls. His behavior in the girls' thread became more and more erratic up until the moment he was banned.

I can only assume that either they finally reported him or he reported them for ignoring him. Either way, I think this ranks as conclusive proof. Mark needs attention.

This makes him by definition a troll.

Unlike your usual bored teenage troll however, he seems to be genuinely trying to get something out of this place that he needs in real life that we cannot give him. He is trying to interact with all these teenagers but expects them to act like his version of what adults are. They are not adults, they are teenagers. They cannot and will not conform to his world view. The fact that he seems to need them to, and the way he inappropriately acts towards them and pries into people's lives leads me to believe that although he may be benign, he is in fact the sort of person your mother warned you about- older men trying to pass themselves off as a teenagers on the internet for their own agenda.

I don't agree with the way much of this thread played out. But everything said here has pretty much been said to his face at one time or another. (Some of it by me though he never seems to be able to comprehend that.) This thread has allowed people to finally compare notes in public without interruption to piece together the bigger picture. I get the impression that many of them are counting on Mark reading it hoping that he will finally understand what they have been trying to tell him for many years now.

It's easy to think of a character like a piece of old furniture. It's just always there so you put up with it. I've even defended him on that basis many times. But this week has made me realize just how inappropriate his behavior has actually been. There are children on this board and for lack of a better term the way he treats them can be very creepy. There's a completely legitimate reason for continuing to bump it, of course. That is, the thread has become a spamfest, when from pages 35 or so onwards it actually became a most interesting discussion about the behaviour of Mark on these forums for the last x number of years.

He has had every chance to argue, or provide evidence, against all these complaints about him since he's no longer banned.

The fact that he's chosen not to do so speaks volumes.

The OP of the post I had been bumping raised extremely legitimate concerns about the way he conducts himself on this forum, which were largely agreed with, although as I wrote I didn't agree with every single conclusion she drew. It seems she now wants to distance herself from this post for some reason, so so be it.

I will, however, continue to point to around pages 34-35 onwards as an interesting place to read more about Mark's behaviour as long as this thread keeps getting 'bumped' by other talk, which wasn't the point or the main thrust of the thread at all.

Everything I write about Mark is a complaint, not an allegation, and many others on this thread have contributed their own complaints. I have evidence to back up everything I say - I don't say these things lightly.

As for allegations or the like, there have been one or two slurs against Mark on this thread, and I absolutely agree that they have no place on this forum.

His silence on the matter can be taken one of two ways; either he is hoping for a more peaceful way ahead with past behaviour stopped, or merely a tacit acknowledgment that much of what is on this thread is true, and unarguable.

I dearly hope the former outweighs the latter, and will write no more on the subject until time tells :)

I did say it was brave to write such a strong-minded post that a lot of people were intrigued to see and back, I guess the reality of making such a bold statement is that you have to stick with it.

'Handling it privately'? If anything thats what we were worried about. He could be privately talking to anyone, that was the original problem. The most important thing is that everyone who logs on here feels safe and comfortable posting here, Mark's persistence with newbs, as I heard, is to convince them to come around to his way of thinking by consistently nagging at them.

For example, when it comes to me, Ive heard that some members have felt pressured into disliking me. When I take breaks from this forum or even when Im here, behind my back he badmouths me and influences others not to like me, if he did that to you Cadet, you wouldn't want to just let it drop (And I'll admit that I am bitter about it, I wont let it drop unless he at least acknowledges it as well as many other things posted in this thread). Ive seen it in threads, if one of his new pets say something that isnt negative towards me, even neutral or impartial, Mark wont let it go.

Another example is asking people to change the title of a thread thats dedicated to someone to include Marks name, that cant make anyone feel comfortable.

Theres just too many issues to reply to. Its died down now, but for a good 15-20 pages there was one thing after another, he cant possibly deal with it all. Id say its highly unlikely he doesnt want to start this shit again, he feeds off that and the attention.

Neither me nor the admins here are either underage or new, which is why I don't have a problem with the wiser route in this case. Yes he contacted me about my post. He said very little and nothing of consequence so I haven't responded. His actions however, speak volumes.

I said that if Mark changed his behavior, I wouldn't have a problem with him being here. His behavior as I have observed it has changed. Therefore, I withdraw my complaints as long as his behavior stays changed.

Worries, being worries, will never stop nagging, which is why I will continue to be vigilant. By which I mean, keep an eye on things, not make a big fuss about old news.

To those who feel the need for another big argument I ask, do you really want things to improve, or are you looking for some sort of revenge/emotional catharsis from a fight? From your attitudes it seems like the latter. Me, I wanted things to improve and they did. If it was not for my worries, I would have kept my mouth shut. I wish I had now, since this whole exercise has only reminded me why I don't pick sides. I hate pitchfork wielding mobs. They are the antithesis of reason, and reason is the number one thing needed here.

So, how are you going to 'police' this aspect of his behaviour? Just take his word for it??

A lot of the people he befriends are new, oblivious, he capitalises on that, and exploits their attitude to influence. His version of how he speaks to people is different from the reality.

This forum is bad for the man, bad for us, he should be banned. Thats what should happen, but unfortunately there are no clear grounds to ban him on, and do you know why that is?

He adjusts, just like hes changed his behaviour recently.

In terms of criticising him, Im done, theres just no progress in here. I'll continue to confront him about his insane logic towards everything, but only in a polite and unoffensive manner. And I'll expect no response.

Troll is the word for him, when Ive had arguments with him, I would swear, be ageist, and use anything I could to make him look stupid. So he would reply with a shit joke about me being a **** (Which is fair enough) but me being a ****, in his mind, means the original issue is irrelevant.

When I just focus on what nutty thing hes written (eg the thread posted recently about getting socks for christmas), he just ignores it.

Absolutely, and in my humble opinion it's a great shame that Space Cadet has chosen to distance herself from her very well-thought post, and is the only reason I continue not to bump it.

She is dealing with this privately? She is able to monitor Mark's behaviour that just a few days ago she was so very concerned about? How??

I have not been bothered enough to enquire, but I guess that Mark's awful behaviour towards me was part (?) of what got him banned in the first place. I have certainly had no 'private' dealing with him on his initiative to 'deal with this.

Imho, it's because Ian and Jen are too gentle, too kind, and too laid-back to have a strict moderation policy here. I have been a member of forums since the internet opened (more or less) and continue to be a member of around ten. ALL of them have, or did have when I was a member, moderation policies, which include grounds for permanent banning (and grounds on any of the other forums Mark would have passed long, long ago).

It'll be only for a short while, imho. It may take a month, he might even be able to hold off for longer, even a year, but his old ways will come back, and trouble will start again. In the meantime, who's going to prevent his recruitment of new (particularly underage) members that Space Cadet highlighted, was so worried about, and then withdrew from? No-one.

Sounds like the best course of action for us all. Sooner or later, despite the lack of a moderation policy on this forum, he will surely get himself banned. Being rude to him only gives him ammunition to complain back to the mods. As Space Cadet so wisely said, we must be civil but reasonable with him.
