im assuming you go to the auckland leg of the festival which is famous for not having a barricaded D section. do you prefer itl ike that? or would you like it better if there was a fenced off section at the front.

the good stuff is lower down the line up. temper trap, tame impala, the horrors, lisa mitchell and midnight juggernauts. big day out simply cannot compete with the other big summer festivals, falls fest, soundwave, v fest, homebake and pyramid rock.

I have a feeling V fest is yet again going to trump BDO in 2010.

i just prefer the atmosphere of those smaller festivals. i know they're very hippie and indie or whatever. but i would take that anyday over the drunk bogan fuelled day BDO seems like. and now those smallers fests are churning out incredible line ups, i think my hard earned money will be going towards those instead of BDO.

yeah its not too bad hey, but i really really loved what they did with the logo last time. it was more rock n roll. i guess this one reflects lily's "post retirement" appearance at the festival.

are you over 15?

Yes. We are trying at school to get a whole group of us to go down. How quick do the tickets usually sell out? My parents said no as well. what can i say to make them change their minds. They said no mainly on the reasons that their are a heap of drunk people, drugs and someone died their a couple of years ago.

well about convincing your folks to let you go. it would be wise to take a few guys with you preferrably older than you (im guessing you're still in high school). i think 2010 like 09 wont attract too many of the "lad" types because of the line up. i guess you can try and convince them that you wont be jumping into the middle of the moshpit. but they've got quite a few strong reasons for you not going. its better for me, my parents think big day out is a rock band. hmm

about selling out? are you from melbourne? alex would know better than me but i dont think 2009 BDO sold out, so its even less likely this year will. before 09 sydney used to sell out in a couple of days, in 09 the initial allocation of 45 000 tix went in a few days then the remaining 10 000 tix were balloted off over afew weeks. i won the ballot several times but for personal reasons i couldnt go.

I lol'd at the bit in bold. Yeah, Im still in high school. I wouldn't want to go anyway if there wasn't a big group of my friends going. Currently trying to organise an adult. I don't think i will be jumping around im the moshpit either. Im going to the sydney one also. thanks for the advice.

30-09-2009, 12:05 PM
Hey guys, as for being worried, you shouldnt. There were no troubles in Melb last year that I saw, I dont know what its like in Sydney. You can still be outside the mosh pit of the main stage and get a good view of the bands.. Also there are 4 other minor stages where people don't really mosh, they're more intimate, I tended to prefer the artists at those last year. If you're going, I would encourage you to go with a group of mates.

which in my humble opinion has produced a stronger line up than BDO. at least in terms of that brand of music. i'm really worried about the future of the BDO, you cant help but feel the line ups are becoming progessively weaker and weaker whilst all the other summer fests are getting better with every year.

just got a massive poster from the free street music mag i pick up weekly. its 2 metres long and 80cm wide. on one side you have a live shot of matt bellamy playing his red guitar and on the other side you have the official BDO 2010 poster w/lineup. looks awesome! but i kinda wish that they made this after the entire line up had been announced

second line up expected early november.

I doubt I'll be able to afford to go to this.
I really, really wanna see Muse headlining a festival.
They seem like such a great live band, especially with large crowds.
Hopefully they announce some sideshows which means I may be able to see them more than once.
Wouldn't mind seeing Eskimo Joe again either.
They were brilliant both times I saw them.

Oh, no. That doesn't sound good at all. Although, it means Powderfinger will probably play Blue stage before Lilly Allen, and Kasabian will be on the green stage. I hope, green stage was my favourite last year.

DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA

sydney BDO tix have gone on sale 3hrs early!! word is spreading fast that ticketmaster has opened its ticket sales!! and i've already bought mine and for 3 friends totaling almost $600. but now people are talking about ticketmaster cancelling those tickets and giving refunds and forcing those customers to buy again tomorrow.

SOOOOO ANNOYING. certain organisations have been contacted in regards to action against ticketmasters headquarters in sydney if aforementioned tickets are cancelled. ;)

SOLD OUT SOLD OUT SOLD OUT

bigdayout.com has sold all of its allocated tickets for the sydney leg of the BDO. it took less than 15mins. the remainder of the tickets go on sale 9am wednesday on ticketmaster. 10 000 have been put aside for a ballot system distribution.

ticketmaster and big day out have confirmed that all tickets purchased on tuesday night due to a glitch on the ticketmaster website will be honoured.

deaths_friend
06-10-2009, 11:24 PM
the ticketmaster allocation is also gone. now only 10 000 ticket remain which will be distributed through a ballot system

last night ticketmaster made available the tickets for a period of about 90mins. its unclear how many tickets went in that time, but the word spread like wild fire. when the tickets went on sale on the official website they dissapeared within 10mins. this morning at 9am the tickets officially went up on ticketmaster, they went in less than 5mins. the website malfunctioned making it impossible for people to buy online.

deaths_friend

i haven't heard anything about any sort of ballot this time around. so i'm really not sure. the ballot hasnt opened yet. we'll have to wait until all shows are on sale until they start the ballots.

in short, no idea whats going on. you can ask around fasterlouder if you want.

EDIT: just read the initial press release that came out with the first line up announcement. it says that for the Gold Coast show, 5000 tickets will be put aside for ballots. There is no such comment on any of the other dates.

deaths_friend
08-10-2009, 10:42 PM
the mod on the big day out forum reported 5mins. i'm going to take that as the official time. but i'm not a big fan of them allocating a certain amount to ticketmaster and the rest to their website. if their aim is to reduce the traffic on the website, they've failed miserably because the second 9am releases have had no impact whatsoever on the number of people who access the site to buy tickets at midnight.

UPDATE: TIcketmaster is horribly slow at the moment. But you can at least get through unlike for the Sydney shows.

And could they stop acting as if this second Sydney show thing is a totally unplanned spur of the moment decision. they knew there would be the demand which is why there is a 4 day gap between sydney and melbourne. they didnt add a show cos they screwed up, they added it for the same reason coldplay did 4 shows in sydney. DEMAND. simple economics aint that right alex.

tauiwi
08-10-2009, 11:13 PM
Yeah, they left sat and sunday after the syd show free deliberately, methinks. They knew the demand would be up this year, thats the pulling power of Muse - which they have known considering this is their 3rd year? 4th?

did you see on fasterlouder the reasons people were giving for a second sydney (besides the obvious demand). i thought the best one was that sydney deserved show no.100 simply because the event started in sydney so it's only fitting no.100 is in sydney also.

deaths_friend

i think we can quite safely say that Soundwave 2010 has trumped BDO 2010. They might not have anyone as big as Muse but Faith No More, Janes Addiction, AFI, Placebo and My Chemical Romance are all bigger than the next biggest name on the BDO line up, Powderfinger.

cant wait for placebo sideshows.

well the final tickets for the BDO in Australia have been snapped up. news came through early yesterday that only the way people can now buy tickets is through a ballot system which if im not mistaken is available for every city. i think its safe to say that this is the most successful BDO in history which i must admit has taken me by surprise because i still feel that the line up is nothing special at least compared to 2007 and 2008. i think its more to do with the economic climate than the line up.

Bands that fasterlouder.com.au have mentioned as possible second round announcements.

After two rapidly sold-out shows in August, PHOENIX is now a bona-fide ‘big deal’ in Australia. The Gallic heartbreakers hinted they’d be back for a summer festival – and FasterLouder knows which line-ups they’re NOT on. Could this be the one?

With a mysterious promo visit to Sydney next month, VAMPIRE WEEKEND is one of the hottest tips to appear on the next round of acts. The Ralph Lauren ambassadors have a feverish following here and a new album ‘Contra’ due in January 2010. Boxes ticked.

Big Day Out could use another dazzling lady, and Natasha Khan dazzles like few others. BAT FOR LASHES is one of those names often rumoured for festival line-ups, but has so far proved elusive. It’s a long shot for BDO, but one worth barracking for.

One of Australia’s best-loved live bands, GYROSCOPE recently told FasterLouder they’re angling for a spot on the Big Day Out bill. We’d say that puts them at pretty safe odds.

We’re still putting ambitious odds on German pyromaniacs RAMMSTEIN to set the Big Day Out stage ablaze again - if only for the thought of Lily Allen playing the next set.

A wildcard perhaps, but surely FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS is due to appear on an Aussie festival line-up soon? The musical parodists have just released a second album of tunes from their hit HBO series, so we reckon it could be Business Time for Big Day Out.

Fresh from a round of world-conquering, Australia’s reigning live act THE PRESETS is back here in January. We have an inkling Kim and Julian could be contending with Groove Armada to close the Boiler Room.

With The Strokes taking their sweet time to record their next album and JULIAN CASABLANCAS' solo album due any day now, we think that the recently rehabilitated frontman is a chance.

Nathan Williams - the hipster pin-up behind the psyched-out punk of WAVVES - said he’d bring the band here for summer. Laneway seemed like a shoe-in, but it was not to be (yet). A sun-soaked side-stage at Big Day Out may be beckoning.

The dark and dastardly spot on the line-up might already be claimed by The Horrors, but we’re tipping GLASVEGAS as black-clad-band-number-two. Hot from a Mercury Prize nomination, we’d like to see them put in a sweltering show.

We know that that Warren Ellis is in town this February AND that Nick Cave has been planning a promo tour here for the release of his new book. Given this timing and the band’s history with the festival, NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS is an outside chance.

When PASSION PIT told FasterLouder they’d be here for a summer festival, we had them pinned for Falls or Laneway Festival. Perhaps the hyped five-piece has decided on an early afternoon set in the Boiler Room. Consider them the anti-Calvin Harris.

With two reliable Aussie festival-starters Grinspoon and Powderfinger already confirmed on the bill and rock opus 'Cosmic Egg' just cracking on the masses, we are putting pretty good odds on WOLFMOTHER to be announced on the second line-up.

Yes, we may drag RANCID out for every possible line-up announcement prediction, but the band is not playing ANY other festival this summer and has promised to break its 11-year Australian tour drought. It's got to happen.

Sometimes in life all you can do is dream. We would like to think that there is a chance (albeit only slightly less than a snowball in hell) that the BDO will bring out the one and only pixie king, DAVID BOWIE for their 100th birthday celebrations.

Bowie? FOTC? Wolfmother? Vampire Weekend? Phoenix? Julian Casablancas? Presets? Glasvegas? If any of these bands are announced I will collapse..... with excitement.

Well, the rest can go to V festival or laneway's 2nd announcement! WOOOOO

deaths_friend
21-10-2009, 03:01 PM
out of those here are my tips

- Phoenix (would be soooo awesome)
- Gyroscope ( good band but havent done anything particularly awesome)
- Passion Pit (surprised they werent on the first line up)
- Glasvegas (have they toured aus yet? i quite enjoyed their debut last year)
- Julian Casablancas (Serj Tankian of 2010?)

Wolfmother and The Presets are too big to joint the line up. they would be demanding a spot like powderfingers on the main stage. of course if either join you wont hear me complaining. flight of the conchords would be very interesting at a big fest. not too sure about vampire weekend coming in november then coming back again within a couple of months.

27-10-2009, 12:18 AM
im assuming you go to the auckland leg of the festival which is famous for not having a barricaded D section.

Could you maybe elaborate on this a bit? This'll be my first festival and I have no idea what's going on and what that even is :P

deaths_friend
27-10-2009, 12:59 AM
ok

if you watch festivals and big stadiums shows from the 80s and 90s you will see that the crowd is standing undivided, there are no barricades breaking the crowd into sections. towards the turn of the century in particular Roskilde Festival 2000, crowd crushes were becoming a commonality, at Roskilde this ended in 9 people being crushed to death. so many of these events started introducing D barricades, which separates the front section of the crowd from everyone else. i'm guessing you saw Coldplay in melbourne on their last tour did you notice how the standing area was divided into two sections. thats an example of a small D barricade. a similiar thing is used at the BDO. this is the best pic i could find

http://www.airviewonline.com.au/photos/0901-2330-04/Sydney-Big-Day-Out?PHPSESSID=2bef105d44e6f089d022d7115d93c342

see how theres a barricade not far from the stage. that photo was taken at midday. its usually packed by around 6pm and security wont let anyone else in. im not 100% how it all works with people going in and out. you will have to ask alex that.

every BDO has a D barricade except the Auckland one. simply because NZ laws are different to Australian ones.

tauiwi
27-10-2009, 01:17 AM
Only the main stages (Blue/orange).... the green (in my opinion always the best) has real barrier at all...

As for D-barrier, It usually gets packed around 6pm.. they will only let people in if others are coming out... it was full for arcitc monkeys last year and then everyone cleared out when Niel Young came on! (Prodigy and Dropkick murphys >) I was on the edge of the D-Barrier last year, so I got to see people being pulled out... its quite far back, but you have to expect to be pretty jammed in if you go in there. I am planning to this year providing a good act is on before muse.

Grace.
27-10-2009, 02:28 AM
Thanks to both of you, much clearer now! And I'll definitely get there well before 6 :P
So, which bands are you looking forward to hearing the most?

deaths_friend
27-10-2009, 10:41 AM
from the first annoucement

the only big band i'm really into seeing is Muse. but if i want to get anywhere near them i will have to be in front of the main stage for a few acts before them (really hoping Mars Volta play late on the main stage), so that will mean missing out others on the outer stages. but the bands im hoping to check out earlier in the day are:

Karnivool
Midnight Juggernauts
Lisa Mitchell
The Horrors
Tame Impala
Rise Against

i'm getting the impression that Muse will not do any sideshows for BDO. i cant remember the last time it took this long for the headliner to announce their sideshows. neil young announced his shows before BDO line up was announced and year before RATM announced theirs only days after the first line up announcement. tool and white stripes similarly.

reasons for them not doing sideshows. 1. their current stage is very elaborate and since they wont be able to use it at BDO, it would seem a waste to carry it around for just a couple of shows. 2. rod laver arena which would be the most likely venue for melbourne will be used for Aus Open, Sidney Myer music bowl i guess is another option (metallica did that in 04). 3. they have all but promised to be returning later in the year for a proper arena tour.

The Horrors have announced some dates, at least according to Triple J they will be doing a sideshow at the Oxford Art Fatory in Sydney

i know sydney has 55 000 at each show. and i think melbourne upped their capacity to 55 000 last year. not too sure about the other cities. i know that sounds quite small compared to the european and american festivals but they tried to increase it to 70 000 one year and apparently it was just chaotic.

tauiwi
06-01-2010, 09:36 AM
Yeah, festivals take planning, and it is difficult to get good spots-generally you have to get there early.. and it doesnt help that orange and blue are SO FAR from green and purple stages... other than that, you should be ok... just wear casual clothes with shoes. It may be hot, so beach clothes are generally good, with shoes tho cos you def need those. Food and drink is expensive. you can take some in, a very small backpack is fine, you will get it checked for alcohol tho.. so take unopened water. They do have free water stations, like drinkng fountains and such. Merch is a couple of stands around the grounds.. just purchase like u would for a normal gig. Any other q's?

Yeah, festivals take planning, and it is difficult to get good spots-generally you have to get there early.. and it doesnt help that orange and blue are SO FAR from green and purple stages... other than that, you should be ok... just wear casual clothes with shoes. I think the only problem I'm gonna have on the day is having to stand through music I don't wanna listen to.

Well, that may happen if you get to wait for muse early. TBH, I really want to see muse, but I am not standing through the Mars Volta just to get a spot. I'll get there for powderfinger, because I like them... and just appreciate any spot I get...

Thanks Alex, very helpful for all us first-timers! :P
I've just remembered, they have a cloaking room don't they? As annoying as it would be at the end of the night, it would be possible to buy stuff early and just put it there.

I think the only problem I'm gonna have on the day is having to stand through music I don't wanna listen to.
Me too :\
It's stupid, but for the sake of one band I'm going to bypass two others

tauiwi
06-01-2010, 11:51 AM
Yeah, I am not sure of the cloaking facilities. Hey grace, is your plan relatively different to mine? We should catch some acts together, when I am left on my own for liking too-alternative music lol...

Grace.
06-01-2010, 11:59 AM
Well to be honest I don't know as many of them as you do :P but it's pretty similar, yeah. We definitely should! I'll just be by myself anyway, so that would be awesome :awesome:

It's not necessarily the waiting for Muse part I'm worried about.
Most of the time the support act for bands I like really suck! :P

It's more of the fact I'm going with my sister and she listens to completely different music to me (most of the time) so I'll have to watch acts that her and her friends (she decided to invite with asking me) wanna watch.

Bad comes to worse I'll just have to pull the "I'm the one who managed to get us Big Day Out tickets, so we listen to what I want" card on her.

I'm probably coming off as a downright bitch. :embarassed:

Grace.
06-01-2010, 12:19 PM
^^Haha, I would probably do the same thing with my brother/sister, and persuade them to come to the ones I want to see :P
Mind you, they know even fewer bands than I do so they probably wouldn't need much convincing :P

Yeah that's always going to be a problem. I have 5 (now 6) different groups going that I know, and there's no way everyone likes the same thing.. you just have to find a good balance, and plan before you go. Also, factor in a good time for dinner!

High: 31 °C, Feel like 42 °C

Sydney, Saturday, Jan 23

I wouldn't take any notice of this if it's not BoM. Modelling only runs for a maximum 14 days ahead - this site advertises 15. and it's not entirely reliable more than 7 days. Anything past the Gold Coast date is a bit of nonsense! Not to mention that these sites use second hand information from BoM and not their own info.

Brisbane is forecast to be mostly fine and 30 on Sunday.
Will have to wait until tomorrow for Gold Coast forecast but it will be fairly similar.

This is the site to use:

a couple of issues

1. just checked out the Bureau of Meteorology forecast for friday's BDO in sydney. the forecast for west sydney (which is where the BDO is held) is a max of 37C. its gonna be a long hot sweaty day!!

2. i really hope channel V do a good job of broadcasting the 100th BDO on saturday. im hoping a full LIVE broadcast of muse, powderfinger and the mars volta's performances . instead of crappy "highlights" throughout the night.

just read a report that dizzee rascal was almost bottled off at the gold coast bdo. i always thought that he was a very very bad choice for the main stage alongside lily allen. havent they seen the footage of what the infamous Reading Festival crowd did to G-unit with 50 cent a few years back.

apparently lily forgot to wear pants on stage. bloody scouser.

anyways back to talking about musicians. i went to see Rise Against last night at the Enmore in sydney and what a spectacular show it was. i admit that i only know a handful of their songs but that didnt really matter last night. ive been to quite a few gigs now and atmosphere-wise this was one of the best. for most of the glorious 75mins, the crowd drowned out the powerful vocalist in fits of passion and raw energy. feel like sacrificing a great spot at BDO for muse just to see them again!!

tauiwi
20-01-2010, 09:01 AM
Ha yeah I listened to them on triple J this morning, they were on doing an interview, and thought it was an amazing gig. Good to hear you enjoyed yourself.

Well, I still think dizzy is a good inclusion, but he needs to be in the boiler, NOT main stage.

As for Lily Allen, she is better without pants.

And Melbourne's looking at 34 degrees for next tues. GROAN

BDO 2010 is a MA15+ event headlined by Muse.

and thats the measurement they make of the "shade temperature" not in the direct sun. i dont even want to think about what it will be like in the middle of the main arena! but as long as its a clear sky and there isnt a hot breeze, it wont be disastrous.
