View Full Version : The 5th Coldplay album

In my opinion, this is the opportunity for the band to cement its legacy. There are points in any artist's career when things just click. I truly believe this is Coldplay's time. Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends exceeded the quality of the first three studio albums. Prospekt's March proved the band has reached its songwriting stride, producing great songs that could not make the cut on the LP.
The intent of this thread is to discuss LP5. What will it sound like? When will it come out? Does this represent that pivotal moment in a band's career where it either delivers or fades back into mediocrity? Let's discuss the impending album....

I agree that Viva was something special, though how they can best it is beyond me. Hope I'm wrong.

uhh the fifth album will be techno dance music
nahh
but this thread right here (http://coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58644) might help what you think what the next album it
but
"We have to go in a very different direction with our next record. We know what we have to do. The big mistake would be to try to replicate the size of Viva La Vida. We'll probably just rely on the chemistry between us rather than too much musical trickery."
yesss something not viva
...but a parachutes ii would be excellent.
with a song that sounds kind of swallowed in the sea-ish.
and the LP5 would be perfection IMO.
(what does LP mean?)

I think it's going to be a bit like Neil Young's acoustic stuff. A bit like Brothers and Sisters to Lovers In Japan.
The Final Track
23-09-2009, 06:08 PM
And no, that is not what Neil Young sounds like.

Parachutes ii would be AWESOME :)
I think not, Coldplay shouldn't go back to where they started, they should keep going, no matter how good any of the previous albums were.

spanish rain, love in a lethal dose, and famous old painters are amazing titles :D
but parachutes ii or arobtth ii is probably going to happen.
x&y wasnt them.
and they said they are not going to do a viva la vida on the next album.
so who knows?
maybe it will sound asian, you know what i mean?
The Final Track
23-09-2009, 08:47 PM
Yeah, they do know how to entertain us during waiting time, I love great song titles!
Famous Old Painters is pure genius. The best, of course, is Life In Technicolor.
No I don't think they'll go back to their previous styles, that doesn't seem likely. You can hear from the newest songs we've heard.
nick311
23-09-2009, 08:51 PM
i know, i love that title :D:D
i made a painting revolving around that song.
1000-1 makes me think of a gorillaz song
oh the waiting is soo long though.
i mean from x&y to viva la vida was soo long.

I think its their end. The last one will sound like all of their previous songs mashed up. "Wedding Bells" sound like Parachutes with a little of "Til Kingdom Come", "Gravity", "Poppyfields", and "Lovers In Japan".
I kinda hope they mash it all up. It would be a great ending... even tho I don't want them to. And I think Chris said he wanted it to have, "less fanfare", does that means he doesn't want it to be as poplular? Well maybe this last one is for us, the fans, the ones who truly know their music.
A wedding is suppose to be a new start... its their new start. I don't think they would go on much longer... its breaking my little heart right saying that....

You made a painting of Life In Technicolor or Famous Old Painters? (that's pretty sweet) I'm doing a drawing called My Life In Technicolor (in geometri class) and did a painting for Famous Old Painters, though it wasn't my painting.

i highly doubt they are near they're end, because that interview on the southbank show they seemed like they are wanting to do this music stuff forever. So ill say they have at least 3+ albums to go.
i want the next album to be very chilled out. with a splash of asian.
life in technicolor is my painting :D
...most of my painting are coldplay related. so if its the end of them, im screwed :p.

Yeah, I dont want them to end! So the longer they go on, I am happy :D
I hope they dont! Maybe the wedding does mean a new start.... or they are just renewing their marriage vows to eachother becua they want to add a little spice to their sexless band-marriage life :p
... well they say its sexless.... I have heard them say they sleep in the same bed atleast twice ;) ... and I am not joking.... :laugh3:

Ditto, I'd probably die about 3 times before entering a weird conceptional artistic period. Seriously, we'd all have emotinal trouble and Coldplaying would have to re-theme into "I can't stop crying" and Rainy Day would have a whole new meaning. 3 more albums sounds reasonable and then hopefully there'll be leftovers.

so they will go on until one of them is dead.

OMG their last album?! No way...Gosh i almost fell off my chair reading your comment LadyBellaStrawberry :) Come on, let's be optimistic.
I think their new stuff's going to be very different from Viva. Hearing Wedding bells and a song from Steve Kroft's interview(Christmas lights??) really got me thinking, and I'm quite sure new album is going to be more intimistic. The only thing missing on Viva, in my opinion, were calm ballads that made me fall in love with Coldplay and Chris's voice. I do think they're going back to the origins in some sort of way, whitch is non neccessarly a bad thing. Many fans who loved Parachutes or A rush of blood to the head miss the old coldplay sound... me to, actually. On the other hand, i know many people who strongly disliked coldplay, but then fell in love with their new stuff so yeah, don't really know. I think they just have to keep experimenting and trying new things...and let's hope for the best.:)

I'll have to agree with 1st poster here, I really believe and hope that this is going to be their career-defining album, the one that will - like said - cement their legacy. It really feels like it. They've developed so much as musicians and songwriters, and i don't think that they'll go back (and i really hope not) and do "Parachutes ii". I love Parachutes, it stands on it's own very well, so let it be, and move on.
I'm so fucking exicted about LP5, they better not let me down! But i defiinitely don't think that they will take a step backwards quality-wise. They learned from X&Y, and they have it in them to be legendary, so if the next album doesn't do it for them, the album after that will. AND NO WAY ARE THEY GONNA STOP AFTER LP5!! I'LL KILL THEM IF THEY DO!
But it would actually be nice with a less... hyped up album, and with less exposure. I mean, Viva was insane. If you looked at top 10 most searched for songs 2008 at LastFM or Lyricwiki, 6 or 7 of them would be CP- songs from Viva.
Don't know if it's possible though, to get a more, hm... commercially toned down album. This is after all, Coldplay - biggest selling act in the world...
But I have a great feeling about this album, as soon as they changed the website you just felt that they're moving on into a new era, Viva is in the past now, and it's looking pretty damn good ahead...

A band like Coldplay strives whilst on the road. Once they get the knack of those songs down packed, they are amazing live... I remember seeing them at Madison Square Garden when they did a few gigs for free... :) I was lucky enough to see them free for a second time :) anyhoo.. thats not the point.. my point is, when I saw them back then, just as the album had dropped, the were still a bit rough on the new stuff... and now look! Wembley was a smash! The second half of this tour was mega! I am sure the boys had been (or have been) writing and fiddling with new ideas for music... One can only imgaine where they will take us next. I think that with the help and direction of Brian Eno on this last album.. it enabled the guys to go places with their music they never even had imagined. Making music with more than just a guitar, bass and drums... inner soul searching, writing lyrics off the cuff.. being a bit more expiremental with their creativity and such.. I think they can only keep going up.. to new heights!
next album is going to be groundbreaking.. different tunes, different feel... its going to be mega! AND I think this 5th record might be the last on the Capitol... I think... not sure how many records the deal was for... but when they do finally break free from the label... look out world! :)

I think they want it to be their Sgt. Pepper
They want to make something they want to listen to not what EVERYONE wants to listen to

so far, from this thread alone, im thinking the next album is going to be the most epic album ever made, they will be bigger than led zeppelin.
Technicolor Liver
24-09-2009, 01:02 AM
led zepplin wasn't as big as The Beatles
When I listen to The End i feel like they are climbing up to heaven as gods!

but, i dont think any band will ever be bigger than the beatles

i think they could explore blues-rock, folk rock, country music, and gospel music a little more intensely on the next album. the momentum is definitely there for the next album to eclipse it's predecessors.
then being up at 2 in the morning instead of sleeping could be screwing up my brain.

I agree with you all for saying they will push further on the experimental/differents instruments stuff. Just look at the Eno sessions on the SBS, it doesnt' sound like the usual CP.
Plus, I think that Chris (by collaborating with other artists) and mostly Guy by doing a totally different thing musically with Apparatjik could bring really new ideas. BTW, I found that the Eno session on the SBS sound a lot like what Apparatjik does...Very experimental and dreamy. For those who doesn't know what Guy is doing in this, here some Apparatjik tunes:
YouTube - Apparatjik - Frozen Fingers
YouTube - Apparatjik - Snow Crystals

I do want some experimentation, but it can't be a completely 'different' Coldplay, if they keep with Eno, they can't stray into the ambient kind of music, unless it has their classical elements in it.
They should push the folk/country, just a bit, maybe an EP with songs like the Dubliners or something like that, but I feel a full folk/country Coldplay album would turn me away a little.

Viva was happy  uhh, kind of i guess.
but viva didnt have anything like Green Eyes :D or Daylight.

And I take some milk and it opens it some more.
I've got a house with some cheese windows,
I dunno why, its just the way it goes.

I find Viva always very uplifting. The artwork, colors, songs like Life in Technicolor and Lovers in Japan gives the album a 'happy' feeling. Even the songs about death aren't sad or morbid.

You think VLV is about going to hell, because of the St. Peter part?

24-09-2009, 05:45 PM

and the ohh ohh part is him going downunder :\ and when they sing the chorus live, its all red lights at the concert
but what ever.
oh life in technicolor ii, end of the world :D
which isnt so bad i guess
Hearing LiT II is the weirdest thing ever ... you're standing there screaming and singing along, feeling like the happiest person in the world and yet you're singing about cold wars and the violent world. :uhoh:

I hope it is a mixture of Viva and A Rush of Blood to the Head. Viva in terms of style and connection with fans and awesome tours. Viva was the best CP tour. A rush had the best, most heartfelt music.
I would not want a purely acoustic album. Maybe one or two. But I want some in the style of LiT2 on there, too. All acoustic is boring. ALL of only one thing, whatever style, is borin. Variety is the spice of life.
Less fanfare? That will never happen. Make crappy music first. If he means not being on Top40 and having teenies screaming Viva La Vida everywhere, then thats alright.
The Final Track
27-09-2009, 10:06 AM
I really can't see them going back to AROBTTH, more likely to be sort of Glass of Water and Rainy Day-ish, with less strings.

If they go back to Parachutes, it WILL be terrible.
They can't repeat previous albums, like Radiohead and Kid A.
There will be more acoustic guitar and less complex effects.
Lyrically, definetly less abstract than Viva.
But they won't releat Parachutes, the songs may seem like it at the moment, but they're just in early days.
Don't forget that Chris did mention an album at the end of the year to wrap up the decade, so it's not too far away.

I don't care what's on it, as long as it has Chris, Guy, Jonny, and Will, I'll be happy. I liked the big range of instruments they used in Viva and Prospekts, and I'd like them to continue that, but don't cram as much instruments as you can into one song. And for that matter, don't try to do it with every song. I don't really get that feeling though, based on what I heard during the 60 Minutes interview. Christmas Lights sounds amazing.

because its seems more like just a cute b-side than a potential quality coldplay song that we've come to expect. It doesn't have much room for development and the rythmic energy necessary to support a big show or to be one of the better tracks on an album. He writes about a song a week, before the last album he sometimes wrote more than one in a day, I wouldn't be surprised if never hear a studio version of wedding bells.

where can i hear those two songs you're referring to?
i remember one of them might be from the sixty minutes interview, but is that all?
personally i wondered why chris thought that would be on an album. maybe he didn't mean it to mean that...?
i only wondered because i thought that a clearly christmas themed song might seem weird on a full album. in reality, it's not that odd, but it's just that we're so used to the idea that if a song mentions christmas it has to be listened to then. but we have no problem listening to violet hill in the summer despite "a long and dark december".
i just want coldplay's 5th album to continue their evolution. i mean that musically and creatively. whether that means incorporating jazz like drum beats as we've heard or simply writing an album that's a story or whatever, i don't care.
i'm sure they'll do something great. they've had one setback in their career (X & Y - sorry people who like it! i like a lot too, but critics panned it), and I think it's just upwards from here. until you know...they're older than 33.
i would enjoy a christmas album though. that sixty minutes thing was what, a year ago? the band are in studio? they have a tour soon but will be basically done for awhile before december? CHRISTMAS EP PERHAPS!?
a new song would be nice though.
(actually, it might be smart to have a christmas ep for just popularity reasons. every great christmas celebrating band has usually had some popular christmas song that's gotten radio play. coldplay have done christmas songs, but maybe they can have a hit one? that'd be pretty sweet)
footyfan10
08-10-2009, 05:26 PM
heard wedding bells and christmas lights.
i liked wedding bells quite a bit actually. i thought it could be one of those nicer love songs you find on their albums. meaning...the scientist, green eyes, fix you, swallowed in the sea, till kingdom come, reign of love (if it were good...), strawberry swing and death and all his friends (the first bit).
that sort of soft and sweet coldplay - meaning chris...
but yeah, i don't know why that couldn't be on an album. i honestly got quite a nice visual from it all. could be a nice music video. and honestly, songs like this are always very popular with mass audiences if you sell it right.
not that that's a reason for us or the band to include it, but simply saying that it's a good song.

Parachutes melodies for me weren't as good as Viva La VIda's or A Rush Of Blood To The Head. It'd be beautiful to hear an acoustic album from them again but not in the Parachutes sense. Acoustic is the step forward not a rock album in the sense of heavy guitar etc. I would love it tobe very cold and dark. The sort of music which you would play in a montage of the icy arctic, or a deserted minus 30 degree Siberia in January. Yes, a winter album, the sort that should be released during the winter, something Coldplay haven't done before.

footyfan10
14-10-2009, 02:56 AM
I'd expect something around the holidays. They have a few months to be working.
They've also been working constantly this whole tour on new material. They have a break until the end of February and will only be doing the South American tour for a few weeks, so I don't we will have to wait that long.
My only hope is that the band are all on the same page. This would be the only reason that a new album wouldn't be forthcoming in 2010 or early 2011 for me.
We know Chris is plugging along and that they've been working, and hopefully they are all liking what they're hearing.
Perhaps the band will work hard on the fifth album and then not do such a demanding world tour after it's release - ala Radiohead and U2 on some records.
That would work fine with me. They've seen everyone, so no one can really complain about not being treated. This way maybe they can just do a short world tour and get to work on LP 6. Don't worry, I'm not getting ahead of myself or excited...just speculating.
My hopes are we have something in 2010. Everyone talks so often about the music industry changing and having to be constantly in the public eye to remain relevant. Well hopefully Coldplay can take this to heart while still improving and evolving as a band. Fingers crossed 2010!

I don't think VLVODAAHF was perfection - Chris eventually glued 15 songs together in pairs to reduce it to a 10 title album, which leaves you a bit lost to the meaning of the songs, especially the second ones to all of that, who are often nothing more than one unfinished thematic piece of material that wasn't developed into a whole album.
I loved it, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't perfection like somebody said a bit higher.
I think they have found that a song with a propulsive beat (like all those RnB tunes) scores really well with the masses (like Viva la vida). So that will probably the title track. Then for all of us there might be some folk/alternative music maybe? Intertwined with U2 hardrock and some old-fashioned dreamy Coldplay ballad.
That's what I reckon.

I sure hope so too, but there's a massive chance that any of the demos (or any other new songs we've heard) won't be on the next album considering that they were origionaly written for viva.

i think X&Y was fantastic. Parachutes specialised in aucostic guitaring mostly, apart from Trouble and Everything's Not Lost. AROBTTH introduced Clocks and The Scientist which included piano, and X&Y involved electric guitars. So if Coldplay decide to make a ii of any of these fantastic albums, i'd quite happily listen to it.

Yeah, exactly. Remember that podcast from way back when? Chris and Will talking about "if a song doesn't make the first album, there's absolutely no chance it'll make the second album." Or whatever. There's no way they're using Viva leftovers for LP5.

Well, if there's one thing we've learned it's not to listen to everything Chris says ;). In My Place is from the Parachutes sessions and during the South Bank show interview Famous Old Painters is on the list of material :)
