Ok Here are a few of the bigger bands around today.

Who has the best musical ability?

I am going to leave this to be fairly broad but the way I interpret ability is a mix of these things:

"Instrumental Skills" - The ability to play their instruments exceptionally well.
"Songriting Skills" - The ability to write great music. By great, i mean complex, interesting music that is still easy to listen to. A mixture of these constitutes great writing IMO.
"Lyrics" - The lyrics must be good and meaningful, in the context of the style of music.
"Live Performance" - The live ability of the band - how good are their live shows.
"Singing Ability" - The ability and talent of the singer -their voice can make or break a band.

If you have any other criteria you vote on, jot them down! I am keen to see what people think

Probably Radiohead. Are you really curious to see what people think? World of Music is a quasi-Radiohead forum. I already know what people will think.

....Green Day

^ I would have no problem voting for Green Day. IMO, they are incredibly talented at the music they make...pop-punk. Comparing a band like Green Day to a band like Radiohead is like comparing apples to oranges. It doesn't mean they are any less talented.

I think these kind of polls are kind of pointless since it's obvious who's going to win.
I voted for Radiohead.
Oh and My Chemical Romance?

Really?

My Chemical Romance?

And I voted for Coldplay, only because I know they always need a few extra votes on this Coldplay forum. Everyone always votes for Radiohead here. Or at least the cool people do...

But I think Elbow should be in that list too.

Musical ability wise I'd have to go for Arctic Monkeys, not cos they are better than Radiohead, but they are better musicians

Erm WHAT!! Arctic Monkeys are a fad band with no melodies to their music. There new single is a shocking piece of cack! Coldplay are the best as they keep churning out the music that appeals to us all. Chris Martin has written some of the most beautiful melodies in recent years. AROBTTH just makes your heart bleed it's that incredible. Live, Coldplay get better and better. Their recent tour is a stunning set of performances. Even their Twisted Logic tour was spectacular live despite what many saw as an average album in X&Y. Coldplay have the ability to entertain and Martin is an eccentric yet brilliant frontman. Complexity wise Radiohead are without doubt the best overall. But for me music is about it's ability to reach for your heart...or if you're a My Chemical Romane fan, reach for the knife!

I was wondering the same.

Lol. Arctic Monkeys are hardly more musically talented than radiohead IMO.

I had to toss up between radiohead and muse, but in the end went for muse, purely because Matt Bellamy is a gun. He is one of the best guitarists the world has seen, an incredible pianist and can sing as well. Not to mention their live shows. See V Festival Knights of Cydonia or Dead Star. It was a hard choice when you think of the complexity of Radiohead's music and the skills that are needed to write some of their works but yes.

Red hot chilli peppers would have probably been my third choice. Coldplay just don't cut it for me, their music while enjoyable, is far too simple and Chris martin's voice does not stack up against the likes of bellamy or yorke. Their live shows do however, and their songwriting perhaps not quite.

I am waiting to be shot...

I enjoy seeing all the different opinions and what people see as talent. Radiohead, Muse and Coldplay I can relate to emotionally, while bands like the chilli peppers and Arctic Monkeys are great in that you can really get in an upbeat mood listening to them!

im with TGE on the arctic monkeys being one of the most musically talented bands there. i love the way the two guitars sort of dance around each other and you have the melodic bass line playing over it with matt's brilliant drumming being the cherry on the cupcake. i like a band who are subtle with their musical genius. of course Muse are very obviously talented same with Radiohead.

but anyone who has had the pleasure of watching the chili peppers jam would know that there really is no contest.

ok, the most MUSICALLY TALENTED band, in regard to proficiency on their instruments, is definitely The Mars Volta.
I mean, those guys are all insanely talented on their instruments.

However, taking songwriting ability into consideration, i'd go with Radiohead or THE ARCADE FIRE. How are they not on the list?

ariadnasquire
09-07-2009, 01:36 PM
hard to choose one among the list....
there are old a new bands mixed, not to mention there are different styles there.
so just i would pick "Other", not sure which one i would pick as that option too. :p
and for me talented would be a band that had reinvented themselves from one album to next one.

Completely agree with the Arctic Monkeys stuff, the inclusion of Nick on bass helped the band so much. Lyric wise Alex's lyrics on FWN are great and on the first album in songs like A Certain Romance they stand out too.

RHCP wise:

Frusciante is a genius with the guitar, so good.

Coldplay makes me lol cos I genuinely can't remember ever hearing a single bassline, the drumming is so mediocre

Daylight has a good bassline. the main attraction towards coldplay for me has always been Chris Martin's lyrics, which i felt were rather weak and uninspiring on X&Y but improved on VLV.

i dont want to turn this into an AM love fest thread but i think everybody who thinks lowly of the band should take a close listen to A Certain Romance, take a few listens actually so you can appreciate all the different aspects of the song.

i hate these kinds of polls, because i dont think people take nearly enough factors into consideration, so im not even going to vote on this.
but, even though i know we're talking "bands" here, i want to assert that none of these groups can compare talent-wise (when it comes to ability to play their instruments) to symphony orchestra violin/viola/cello/double bass players.
it's mind boggling how good those people are. true masters of their instruments.

Jonny Greenwood and John Frusciante are just as brilliant on guitar as a cellist or violinist in a symphony orchestra.
