TV on The Radio ahead of Franz Ferdinand? This will be a strange 'un.
I'm betting Love Will Tear Us Apart will be somewhere in the top 10.

Wolf Like Me is an awesome song but yeh i agree with you in saying that Take Me Out should of been higher.
this will be a very interesting countdown. the demographic of the radio station has changed dramatically. nowadays you have alot of people surfing between triple j and NOVA. nonetheless the result of this poll will have little or no impact on the music played on the station.

uhm ok I wonder how will it develop

i'm expecting Radiohead and Muse to dominate both should have at least 3 entries. ac/dc's return will mean that they will be the best represented aussie band while michael jackson's recent death will most probably result in a couple of entries for him.

the countdown has taken a turn for the worse this afternoon with 90 to 81 being revealed. as much as i love placebo i dont think they are a hottest 100 quality band especially not every you every me. i was scared sex on fire might get top 20 and was praying it wouldnt get in at all. so 90 isnt too bad.
yellow deserves to be much higher but i guess i am biased.

These current results are really quite bizarre if you consider Hottest 100 results in previous years. I wonder who actually voted, I didn't - too much to choose from!
Another best-of list

I don't know, the Hottest 100 is by far definitely the most popular music list in Australia

the end of year hottest 100 is the biggest annual poll in the world. in case non-aussies are wondering what the hell triple j is, its basically the australian equivalent of BBC's Radio 1 (well so they say at least, looking at the stuff Radio 1 plays nowadays i would like to think not).
like i said before most of the triple j's audience are the type who flick between the commercial stations like nova, triple m and austereo network and triple j, which from what i hear wasnt the case so much 10 years when the poll last took place. what makes it into the poll now is quite trivial. its the top 20 thats really going to get people talking.
personally i think that positions 80 to 71 is a massive improvement and i'm really impressed with the amount of songs pre-1991 considering that 85% of the station's audience is between 18 and 25.

I'm tipping these to come in the top 10
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (Hate this mind you)
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Knights of Cydonia - Muse
Killing in the Name - Rage Against The Machine.
Over Half a million people have voted in this and the annual hottest 100 is the world's largest music poll. by a long way!

thats quite a good selection for the top 10. i will be very surprised if Queen make it that high simply because the audience doesnt match the band.
@ricardo
jump onto the stations website and take a look at the response to sex on fire making it. almost went into meltdown when that was announced. it was the biggest song in australia last year (and im sure it was up there in the UK and around europe) so its only natural for it to feature in a countdown of this nature. my theory is that people who dont really listen to alternative music but wanted to vote thought to themselves, hey whats an "alternative" band i know...KoL, whats the only song i know by them....sex on fire. put the two together and you have a song in the hottest 100. sad but true
next lot of songs starts in 5 mins for anyone interested.

According to whom?
The hottest 100 is a poll conducted by Australian radio station triple j. (Roughly the equivalent to radio 1 in the UK). It generally gets about 700,000+ votes and is the largest music poll in the world.
Every year, the top 100 songs from that year are voted for.
Every 10 years, the top 100 of all time are voted for!
deaths_friend
08-07-2009, 12:02 PM
a significant proportion of the votes come from outside of australia as the poll is open to the whole world. looking at the entries so far it's hard to tell its an aussie poll, hardly any of the songs are home-grown.

Kashmir under blink 182 and Kol?
Although I like the list, well ate least part of it

the reason why kashmir is below those songs is because led zep have loads and loads of big songs. so the votes were spread over all those songs. most people didnt want to vote for one band more than once. you'll find that alot of really hate led zeppelin especially those you loved that punk era that came just after led zeppelin broke through.
songs 60 to 51 were awesome for the most part. Tool's 46&2 and Comfortably Numb are my two favourites so far. they also played half of a rick astley song at number 53 which almost gave me a heart attack but they stopped it halfway and said the actual 53 was Like A Rolling Stone by the legendary Bob Dylan.

you are right mate
tv on the radio, modest mouse, bon iver, rage against the machine, dandy warhols, placebo, the smiths, ben folds five, underworld, you am i and faith no more are the most mainstream bands in music history. it would of been sooo much better if they had britney spears and the backstreet boys had dominated it.
the top 50 has started and aside from sweet child o mine and betterman its an awesome selection of songs. note: the poll closed 2 days after MJ died.

Funnily enough, they have never had a number 1 album here, their last 5 have reached #2.
OK Computer was voted Australia's Third Favourite album ever in an ABC poll about a year ago, behind Dark Side of the Moon and something else.
So yes, they are pretty big here despite not having a number 1, but not as big as elsewhere. I think in the Australia network on facebook they were about 5th or 6th most popular a while back, behind The Killers, Foo Fighters, Powderfinger and Muse.

i always thought that In Rainbows went to number 1, i guess i'm wrong
Radiohead are massive on the "alternative" scene. that is usually defined by the triple j audience (which isnt totally true but it just makes things easier). Creep came in at 5 on the last Hottest 100 of All Time. Paranoid Andriod was No. 13 in the same poll and Karma Police at No.54. The album of the year poll started in 1999 and all 4 radiohead albums since then have made the top 10, with Kid A topping it in 2000 and In Rainbows was 2nd in 07.
if Radiohead dont manage 3 songs in the countdown i will be shocked. but the big problem is that its sooo difficult to choose a favourite radiohead song. everyone i know said that there were about 15 - 20 songs they could of voted for, so the votes are loosely spread across loads of songs.

This is a strange list. I agree with the songs that have gotten in, but not the order. I guess it gives you an idea of who actually voted.
Anyway, I'm holding out for the top 10! That should be interesting

songs 40 down to 31 would have to be my favourite lot of 10 so far. these are some of my favourite songs of all time especially Better Man, Come As You Are, Stinkfist, Enter Sandman and Prisoner Of Society. naturally theres been some backlash to Mr Brightside making it to 38 but this is the entry that im the most happy about. i love the song and dont really care what other people think about it.
and a little something i noticed today. out of the 70 songs played so far, not a single hip hop or rap song has made it. despite the fact that the station plays at least 2 or 3 rap songs every hour.

there has also been a noticeable lack of women in the countdown. there have been 3 Smashing Pumpkins songs who of course have a female member and just then Massive Attack's Teardrop made it in which has vocals from Elizabeth Fraser.
just listened to song 30 down to 21 and it has topped everything else but in a bad way. songs i hoped would make the top 10 have already been played, including Alive and Throw Your Arms Around Me. great to see radiohead open their account and 2 songs from Powderfinger. the second of which These Days is my favourite so far.

And #1 is...... Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana. I saw that coming.

That is such a weird list. I have so many objections, but I guess that is true for every list I have ever seen. Oh well, makes for good discussion :)
By the way, one of the things that I thought was funny about the list is that there are many artists whose best song was passed over in lieu of another. Just goofy to me.
Edit: Also, not one single U2 song on the list. That alone makes it null and void. For a station that seems to play alternative music, that is a joke. No Sunday Bloody Sunday, With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, Pride (In the Name of Love), I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, or New Years Day...Please!

13-07-2009, 04:37 AM
i thought both #1 and #2 were a bit suss. killing in the name of is a wicked song but no where near the second best of all time, no idea how it managed soo many votes. smells like teen spirit was the obvious choice for no.1 but im starting to get sick of it. other than that i've really really enjoyed the last week of music.
just in response to some of the criticisms of the list. U2 arent in it because they've lost that alternative music fan base down here over the last 6 to 7 years. in the previous countdown in 1998 they featured heavily. alot has changed in that time. nonetheless the band has polled very strongly in the annual countdowns since 1989.
best song countdowns are always going to be controversial, people views can be sooo radically different. i guess this countdown reflects my taste in music very well, almost all of my favourite bands made it on and some like radiohead featured heavily.
why is this list so bizarre? i've said this a few times before. alot of the biggest bands who have the most number of hits were at a massive disadvantage as fans voted for a variety of different songs as opposed focussing on one or two songs.
bjaiken
13-07-2009, 06:32 AM

music is completely subjective. when you have half a million people voting on something you're obviously going to get a massive variety of music.
no list of songs will ever satisfy everyone. initially people were complaining that the list is too "classic" then came the Gen Y bashing and now its too 'random'. what did people expect!!

Who actually voted? I know I didn't vote because there were far too many songs to choose from. I do vote in the annual polls though because the task of selection is easier and the annual polls tend to get better results. However having said that, I still believe last years Hottest 100 was awful!

look im with most of you on the horrible order of the list. but it doesnt really bother me. i just think that that's an excellent selection of songs. if i was to choose my 100 favourite songs of all time most of them would be in it. the people who voted in that poll are people who are into a diverse range of music and believe me if you're not then you wont be able to listen to that station for more than 5mins.
if someone sat me down and made me listen to those 100 songs i would be on top of the world afterwards. and please please lets not forget that this is a vote of the MOST POPULAR songs not a definitive list of the BEST SONGS.
