Could be a new band nobody has heard of, or a classic you'd never got round to listening to and anything in between that just made you think "Wow, this is good"

I am currently listening to:

Le Loup - The Throne of the Third Nations Millennium General Assembly

and it made me think that this thread should be created. Le Loup, on their Last.FM, are compared to Animal Collective, I personally don't agree with that comparison but I can see why they would think that, they have the whole Acoustic/Electronic crossover thing that I really love and first witnessed on Thom Yorke's solo album with a bit of Sufjan Stevens/Fleet Foxes thrown in.

It's really worth checking out (am I allowed to post download links in here?)

I've known about him for a while, but it took me until 3 days ago to really explore the music of M83. I was completely blown away by the album 'Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts' when I listened to it for the first time. Since then I've come down from my cloud of euphoria, but its still truly remarkable stuff.

Guys, I think he meant obscure bands...

Yeah, but people get into different bands/music at different times and for different reasons; what's obscure to some, could be quite mainstream to others...

I'm forever just 'discovering' some music I like, only to find the band have been around for ages and every other cool kid on the street has already heard them...

...not that I hang out on streets with any cool kids....

TechnicolorGreenEyes
15-06-2009, 06:27 PM
I even said in my first post, I don't care if it's a mainstream band. I think someone put "The Feeling" and that just sickens me really, but that's to do with peope's music tastes in general and not the thread.

That comment was actually referring to me wantint people to actually write a bit more than just the bands name, as I sort of saw it as being a reccomendation thread too, like "I just discovered this, you should listen to, this is why:" maybe even link to a particularly good song etc.

Nobody is going to check out a band on name alone, plus it doesn't really give any insight unless the person reading is completely familiar with the band.

Phoenix are amazing, they sound kind of like Beck with a mix of Friendly Fires and a little pinch of MGMT. You should check them out!

I recomend Lisztomania, 1901, and Fences or better yet the whole new album.

as far as Phoenix goes, I really like 1901 but I can't get into anything else by them.

Keep this out of my thread please ^^ It's pointles having this thread if people just post a band name.

------------

My new discovery is Múm, they aren't exactly a new unheard of band which is what makes them perfect for me to show what I meant for this thread to be, much like in my first post where I explained a bit about the band and even linked to some music.

I found Múm (pronounced "moom") when talking to one of my friends, they are Icelandic which naturally draws comparisons to Sigur Rós and I can see the comparison...slightly. Múm are a much more upbeat kind of band, not that they are really happy, merely that they are less despondent than Sigur Rós I find them much more accessible than Sigur Rós as well, as much as I appreciate their musical genius I just find them hard to actually sit and listen to Múm don't have this problem, they also incorporate a lot more "happy" sounding instruments and synths into the songs, makes for a great listening experience. I'd strongly suggest listening to their album "Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy" the current stand out song for me is "Dancing Behind My Eyelids"

YouTube - Dancing Behind My Eyelids

Hopefully this sets an example for what I actually want people to do in this thread.

... discovered many bands this year when trying to listen all new albums of this year (sky larkin, kleerup, the young knives ... ), and giving a listen to indie music made here... (deluxe, russian red, la habitación roja ...).
but the most recent band that i've discovered is Ceesau.

Gold Heart Assembly

A new-ish London band - I heard them played on the radio this morning. They were likened to Fleet Foxes by the dj but they're not quite as full on beardy folk as Fleet Foxes - they're a bit more upbeat and more rocky on a few tracks.

Listening to the myspace (http://www.myspace.com/goldheartassembly) songs right now...liking The Jesus Wheel very much.

I couldn't find many youtube links -but this is a nice track...
YouTube - The Last Decade

"They take a joyous acoustic beardy bunch of ideas and mess around with them like a cat playing with a ball of string. Already you could easily put them out on tour supporting Fleet Foxes or The Low Anthem (now there's an idea). And they smile at each other on stage - which is so out of character for new bands these days (unless it's a nervous tick) that it's actually quite infectious." Steve Lamacq

I recently discovered Zechs Marquise. It consists of purely instrumental music, that I couldn't describe clearly in a few words, but let's say it sounds like keyboard/guitar driven rock, with a few strange uses of other instrument.

They only released one album, Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare, off which the last song, Our Delicate Midnight Opera is a complete masterpiece.

Sonic Youth! I'd been meaning to give them a chance for a while and I am so glad I did, Daydream Nation is such a brilliant album, starts off with an amazing track in "Teen Age Riot" and it just keeps going at that pace, one great track after the other. I've only listened to it a few times and I already love it, it might take a bit more to grow on you, but listen!

A great new find. Has that 70s rocky/bluesy feel to it that I absolutely loved.

They have a new album out too; "The Satanic Satanist", which I'm yet to get.

I can't post a link here but if anyone's interested, I'd be happy to help.

You guys have probably all heard of them before, but I've been loving The Bird and The Bee... kind of jazzy, '60s retro electronica. Great beats and Inara George's voice is gorgeous. Her delivery is very cool and detached, which actually fits the music perfectly.

The Howling Bells - live @ the Coldplay Concert in Düsseldorf a week ago :)

Never heard something like that before - really great melodic indie music and good singer, sadly I missed the first part of their show because I was standing in the waiting line for drinks :) but I heard the great sound through the doors and thought wow they're not bad all. They remembered me a bit at the beginnings of Coldplay but there are still so many styles they mix...very interesting to listen to.

whats with the funny typing? i was just about to comment on the impossibility of them touring australia until i read this on wikipedia.

On September 3, posters appeared around the streets of Melbourne, Australia featuring the line "FOLLOW WHAT'S HEARD"[13], a picture of a Vulture, and the URL http://www.frontiertouring.com/followwhatsheard. The URL leads to a page showing the same Vulture and a countdown timer, leading many to speculate an Australian tour announcement is imminent.

I tried for so long to get into Elbow and it never happened. :disappointed:

Elbow is osum! :cheesy:

So I've heard. It was funny. I only knew the song "Grounds for Divorce." I had randomly gotten it stuck in my head, and then that's when I decided to look more into them, and I was pleased. I have a feeling they're going to become a favorite. When I started listening to "The Seldom Seen Kid," I was blown away by "Starlings." I thought, "MAN, this band is really legit. :wacky:"

So yeah, I'm rather happy. I have a feeling that if The Final Track ever sees this, he'll be very proud of me. :P

Hmm not in my case. I saw them live, thought they were good performers but I didn't get into the songs much.

snow patrol, taken me so long!!! I listened to their first 2 albums years ago and didn't like them, then when they released their most recent, I loved it and went back to listen to the others and liked them too, I do that alot, I get into bands years after they started!!! I saw the Stereophonics in concert recently for the first time, amazing! They were another band I only really properly listened to in the last few years and now really like them! Like I liked a couple of songs but couldn't give a fig about them, coldplay was a fine example, loved 'In my Place' and 'clocks' but didn't care much for them until I saw their glastonbury set a few years back and fell in love!!!

Acrassicauda: is an Iraqi thrash metal band formed in 2001. They are often credited as being the first heavy metal group to emerge from Iraq. They formed and played concerts under the Saddam regime. They became well known outside of the local Iraqi metal scene after Vice magazine did a profile of them. They received even greater coverage when they were profiled in a feature length documentary about the band and their troubles in Iraq called, Heavy Metal in Baghdad. Their first album was released on March 9, 2010.

Due to their increased fame after the American regime change they started to receive death threats from Islamic elements who thought they were worshiping Satan. Due to this and the increasing violence in Baghdad they fled first to Syria and then Turkey before being granted refugee status in America.
