View Full Version : SETLIST FOR 2009 USA Tour?

Hello All,
I was wondering what everyone thought the setlist/stage/show might consist of for the upcoming outdoor USA tour.
Do you think it will be exactly the same as the 2008 tour? It is still technically the VIVA LA VIDA tour. I REALLY hope they change the setlist and the show up. They have almost 2 months off before starting on march 15th, so hopefully they have some tricks up thier sleeves...
what does everyone think?

I hope they get rid of the GPASUYF and Talk remix. I mean it was cool and all but, I'd rather see the original performances. Theyre so much better than the remix.
But yeah, I'm not sure. Thats a good question, I was wondering the same thing. There are a lot of concerts this time around that are outside so I'm not sure how they would be able to do the confetti for Lovers In Japan, maybe they'll mix some things up..

i saw them in novemeber in atlanta and will be back in may. if they play the same setlist i might swear off seeing them again. i mean, mix it up! i saw they played 4 nights in syndney and didn't change anything. how fun is that for the fans that see you all nights? do something different! especially with 8 months in between. it's no fun to know what they are going to play before they even do it.

Only some fans of the band are going more then once.. You have to remember that!
And another thing, they have to adjust the lights, the screens and all that kind of stuff.. They can't just change it all the time.
Can't wait till the concerts :D

Honestly, it's still too far off to predict, and we can probably predict a few changes within the tour leg itself, but they'll probably keep a lot of the same stuff. I do agree that I'd like the techno mixes ditched. Granted, they'd have to come up with something else cool for the B-stage. :\
And with all due respect, I seriously hope Speed of Sound is moved back to the standard part of the show. Green Eyes works great on the acoustic set, but I feel Speed of Sound is meant to be played in its original sexy form. Even if it means dumping something like Cemeteries (which I feel is a great song, but unremarkable live).

Well so far on the Tour they haven't been playing much X&Y but Talk has become more frequent.

Well this IS my BEST prediction, I doubt any lesser songs being played, but i hope that they play Speed of Sound in the US. We've not heard it in concert for about 3 years NOW!!:angry:

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (Partial Techno Remix)
Talk (Partial Techno Remix)

I mean I love the Remix too, but you can watch them perform those songs remix style 4 days in a row, and I don't think that much can change, I mean what can change?
If they played Talk the original way, chris will dance and do different dances, add some lyrics and shout certain things. More exciting, not to mention the amazing lights and solo...
We'll have to see once we get our tickets. When I got my tickets in October they said "VIVA LA VIDA TOUR" on them... But I think if they didn't do the remixes its still possible it would be called the Viva la Vida tour?
Blah blah blah blah. Ok i'm done guys.

it would be great if they mixed it up a bit, of course would love to hear amsterdam, see you soon, warning sign, moses, one i love, shiver, but i know they stick to the plan and takes alot to change the props, lighting, etc. etc
but i will love whatever they play , we are truly lucky to get to see them.

Roadie 42 did mention in a recent blog that some setlists shake-ups were imminent, just for the sake of keeping this massive tour interesting for the boys. No, it's not likely that they will play the less popular b-sides or older songs, but we can keep our fingers crossed! :)

I know. It's one of those songs that is meant to be played live-- the album version just does not do it justice. It will always be one of my favorites and a must for live shows. When I saw them at MSG last June, they didn't play it, and I really felt like something major was missing from the setlist! But they have been playing it pretty consistently lately, so I am fairly confident it will be played this summer! :)

It seems the acoustic set is the most fluid in terms of setlist changes. Glass of Water seems to be more solidified now (finally) at the expense of Chinese Sleep Chant, which probably isn't the biggest loss. Speed of Sound was moved to the acoustic C-stage (which I want back in standard set), which seems to swap with Green Eyes every night. I doubt the U.S. tour is going to have as many crazy covers, honestly, so we could see something fill their place.
Chinese Sleep Chant was a fun glowstick/cellphone song, but I'm not truly going to miss it. I far prefer Glass of Water and I hope they continue with it. Death Will Never Conquer is the other recent loss, and maybe they'll throw it back in if they ditch the acoustic covers (mostly worth it for Will).
Of course, something out-of-the-blue would be the best course, just to keep things fresh. Maybe something normal from X&Y that isn't a piano or acoustic or techno mix. Y'know, so Fix You isn't totally alone.

23-03-2009, 09:20 PM
The setlist just keeps better and better. Chris knows what people want to hear. Chinese Sleep Chant was the one song I could do without, so was Death Will Never Conquer. The set is near perfect now. The only other realistic change I would like is taking out the techno versions of GPASUYF and talk, playing the normal version of talk and discarding GPASUYF and maybe adding White Shadows?? I would also rather hear Swallowed In the Sea instead of The Hardest Part. Otherwise, the set is PERFECT, just like the band.

I hate the way they've abandoned X & Y. It's a fine album.
Talk and White Shadows are 2 of the best songs from that album and they're really missing.
I consider them the "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "Until the End of the World" of their repertoires. Not as popular as "One" or "Mysterious Ways", but more fun live.
I'm sick of "Speed of Sound" and if it weren't for "Fix You"'s ties to Katrina era New Orleans I'd be sick of that too.

i know what your saying. To be quite frank viva la vida doesnt match up to their previous albums in my opinion. They have totally abandoned their altime best ablum parashoots for live performances it seems. I saw them a couple years ago in columbus and they played like green eyes , shiver, amsterdam....I think i should just feel grateful almost because by the looks of it were never going to hear those songs live again....Its more of the viva la vida / popular songs tour..i cant complain though all their songs are great...there will always be those songs that youde like hearing live one day....Ide do just about anything to hear see you soon or moses live

Well every time they come out with a new album they first try to play most of the songs then, as time progresses, eliminate the less popular songs live.

I definetly understand that....I just hope by the time the Burgettstown show rolls around time will have progressed enough for them to play more Parachutes and AROBTTH. My dream performance would be something like:
Shiver

Sparks
Trouble
We never change
GPASUYF
Scientist
Green Eyes
Warning Sign
AROBTTH
Amsterdam
White shadows
Talk
Swallowed in the sea
Moses

I can see them adding a few songs. Now My Feet Wont Touch The Ground to the Acoustic stage. Rainy Day to the B-Stage.
Prospekts March and Rush of Blood together. Swallowed In The Sea played on the B-Stage as well. Im hoping for Amsterdam to possibly replace or accent Hardest Part.
I hope they bring back songs like Shiver, One I love, Moses. I was listening to Live 2003 today and thought, "This would have been one kick ass tour. I want to hear new Coldplay with this Brit Rock sound"
One thing I really want is, to hear Violet Hill with the piano.
One song that better not be touched is Politik. If they touch Politik I will kill someone, now if they go Square One then Politik for the Encore....my life will be complete.

Terrific! I have a strong feeling this is the result of the band (possibly through the fact phil spends time on this forum) taking in the wishes and petitions of the fanbase. AROBTTH, SITS and Warning Sign are near or at the top of the list in terms of songs people complain the most about wanting on the setlist. SITS, Warning Sign had their own petitions I think, and AROBTTH is just awesome!

Frankly I think 32 songs is standard. Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, U2, Springsteen. All world class acts, play to that tune.
Coldplay should be playing more songs especially when 4 are less than 2 mminutes, 3 are one minute or less.

I'm wondering if the indoor shows that were added (after the initial July/August outdoor shows were announced) will be similar to the current shows. The arena setting is more fitting for that stage set. I don't see how they can do that set in some of the outdoor amphitheatres to be honest. I also wonder how they'll do the B and C stage sets in the amphitheatres? I'm going to two of the shows - one from the indoors group and one from the outdoors group, separated by a month and a half, so I'm hoping they will both be different. I've also noticed that many of the shows in May and June are in locations not visited last year...
If you look at the US dates, the first bunch (which I believe are mostly indoor venues) is May to the end of June, then they head off to Europe, and come back in July for the original tour in mostly outdoor venues. I'm wondering if this will be where the changes to the stage and show occur...

Well since I was at one of the few Outdoor Venues of the Viva La Vida tour in NA. They went off to the side of the stage for the B-Stage(GPASUYF and CSC). For the C-Stage set up, they had a stage down the middle of the GA, and at the barricade.

This has to be the best dream setlist I've seen:laugh3:. The one I would change (but very unlikely to ever happen) would be Everything's Not Lost for Speed of Sound.
I think its a lot stronger, its the "big Queen epic" to put it in Chris' words, and one of the best songs ever written.
