British alternative rock band Coldplay will play June 12 at Wells Fargo Arena.

This marks the band's first arena show in Iowa.

Band members include vocalist-pianist-guitarist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion.


Coldplay is known for hits including "Viva la Vida," "Speed of Sound" and "Yellow."

Most recently, Coldplay won three Grammys at the 2009 awards ceremony in February. "Viva la Vida" won for Song of the Year as well as Best Vocal Pop Performance by a Duo or Group, and the album "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" won Best Rock Album.

Tickets are scheduled to go on sale at 10 a.m. March 21.

Coldplay will also play at the Qwest Center in Omaha on June 13. Tickets for this show go on sale at 11 a.m. March 21.

^ I was wondering the same thing. I don't know as if many people going to this show are actually from IA. I myself am traveling about 4 hours to attend because its the closest arena show to my area. Then gonna take the short trip to Omaha the next night. Should be a nice little mini vacation with a Coldplay fix.

Coldplay makes its first Iowa stop in Des Moines

British alt-rock band Coldplay will perform its first arena show in Iowa Friday at Wells Fargo Arena, in support of its latest studio album, "Viva la Vida or Death and All Its Friends."

The album marks a different sound for the band, said guitarist Jonny Buckland.

"The process of it sounds like a new start," Buckland said during a phone interview from his London home last month. "Obviously, there's going to be lots of links to previous music, but working with Brian (Eno), it was a fresh start for us."

Coldplay's collaboration with Eno, a famed music producer (U2, David Bowie, the Talking Heads), has led to a more experimental, creative sound for the band.

"We've tried things we've never tried on our own," Buckland said, such as "taking ideas from hip-hop."

Even with all its superstar status, a major alternative act like Coldplay (one of the top-grossing acts in the world in 2008) might not have booked an arena show a few years ago in Des Moines. In fact, Buckland seemed a little surprised about the venue.

"Iowa? We actually haven't been to Iowa," he said.

Des Moines now consistently draws big-name music headliners - mostly country and rock bands. Several years ago, before Wells Fargo Arena opened and when 80/35 Music Festival was little more than a pipe dream, bands as big and relevant as Coldplay skipped Des Moines for Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City.

Times have changed. As of last week, nearly 8,000 of the 10,000 available tickets to Coldplay had sold. Keith Urban and Taylor Swift's country show scheduled for June 27 was the first to sell out at Wells Fargo Arena so far this year. Lazerfest, with headliner Korn, drew a throng of 15,000 metalheads to a field in Indianola on the last day of May. And last year's inaugural 80/35 Music Festival, organized by the Greater Des Moines Music Coalition (DMMC), attracted nearly 30,000 fans over two days, with about half that number paying to see headliners like The Flaming Lips and The Roots.

"Part of us booking 80/35 was to show agents and promoters that Des Moines could handle bigger shows - and bigger alternative shows," said Amedeo Rossi, project manager for the DMMC. Shows like Coldplay.

Coldplay fan Nicole Tortenson, 30, of West Des Moines, already snatched up her tickets. She normally travels beyond Iowa to attend big shows and has considered traveling to Kansas City with her husband to hear Jason Mraz on May 6.

"I was really impressed we got Coldplay here," Tortenson said. "Usually we'd have to go to Chicago to see a show like this."

When British alternative rock band Coldplay debuts its arena show on Friday in Iowa, the occasion will rate more than just a gig for one of the band members.

Guitarist Jonny Buckland, 31, will be on something of a family vacation. Buckland tours not only with his band mates - front man Chris Martin, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion - but also with his 19-month-old daughter, Violet, and his fiance, Chloe Lee-Evans.

"We travel a lot together," Buckland said over the phone last month from his home in London. "We're just a normal family, kind of. A normal traveling family."

Violet is already showing some "early signs" of rock-star tendencies, he added.

"She definitely likes dancing," Buckland said. She especially likes "Viva la Vida," the title track of Coldplay's fourth studio album that has garnered major awards, including Best Rock Album at this year's Grammy Awards.

Buckland has previously referred to Coldplay's first three albums as a trilogy. "Viva la Vida or Death and All Its Friends," he said, treads on new sonic territory.

"Obviously, there's going to be lots of links to (our) previous music, but working with Brian (Eno), it was a fresh start for us," Buckland said of recording with famed producer Eno, who's credited with also helping to reinvigorate the careers of David Bowie, the Talking Heads and U2 (a band that Coldplay deeply admires). "He's so enthusiastic about trying new ideas."

Although Buckland is removed from many of the band's business concerns - he was unaware of the band's 987,000 (and counting) Twitter followers or the recent plagiarism allegations from Cat Stevens - Buckland is intensely focused on his music.

He can also sense on stage when a certain tune fails to resonate with live audiences, based on the light that filters into the darkened arena from the surrounding hallways.

"When you play a big show like in an arena, all you can really see is the exit doors," Buckland said. "When you play a song that you know is done well ... those doors are clear and you hear everyone singing along ... Sometimes you play a song, there's queues all the way down the stairs and you see people taking their toilet breaks!"

So to the 8,000 or more fans expected to flock to Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, choose wisely when you take a beer (or loo) break.

Jonny Buckland will be watching to see if you like that particular song.

Hi! I checked the Iowa Events Center website this morning and it says that the show is at 7pm instead of 7:30pm. I called the box office to make sure and they said that the time changed to 7pm. I didn't get any kind of notification from them so I wanted to make sure everyone knows it starts at 7pm now, doors open at 6pm. The lady at the box office also said that parking might be tricky because they are sharing the parking lot with another event. I'm so glad I called! See everyone there! :)

Hey guys, show just got over. Amazing show! I was really skeptical about an Iowan crowd but they were really into it! Snow Patrol was awesome as well. Howling Bells were pretty good. Got Guy's setlist. (Actually got two but felt greedy and gave one away) Same as all the nights before, although they added more than one tritube to Des Moines throughout the show ( I think they felt guilty for never playing here before).

Three bands that had never played in Des Moines took the stage Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena, but you wouldn’t have known that they were unfamiliar with our Iowa’s capital city.

Coldplay singer Chris Martin thanked the crowd for missing out on Winefest. Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody managed to pronounce “Des Moines” correctly. (Howling Bells singer Juanita Stein wasn’t as lucky, adding an “S”).

“If we knew how good the audience is, we’d have come a long time ago,” Martin told the crowd. He even worked a line about “finally making it to Iowa” into the opening tune, “Violet Hill.”

The UK band put on a show filled with spectacle as of 10:15 p.m. Giant balloons floated into the crowd during the band’s early hit, “Yellow,” exploding into a mess of confetti when band members would strike them.

i was there tonight, and Coldplay totally rocked it. I was all the way back in the 200 sections, but it was still by far the best concert i've ever been to. They sounded fantastic live, and really really got into it with the audience. I was a little surprised that they played almost their whole new album, but then again it is the viva la vida tour. I think some people might have been unfamiliar with a few of the songs, and i thought they would have played a couple older ones (speed of sound, trouble, other random songs from their first 3 albums). But overall, definitely worth the expensive tickets! Great, great show. I would definitely see them again any day

Some of Coldplay's darker songs seemed an odd contrast to the lively and colorful stage show. "Cemeteries of London," "42" and "Death and All His Friends" are the kind of songs you would not expect to cause a crowd of thousands to jump and wave their arms enthusiastically, but it worked.

The evening was heavy on songs from the band's latest album, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," and its second, "A Rush of Blood to the Head." The band's recent EP, "Prospekt's March" also got some love, but fans of Coldplay's debut, "Parachutes" and 2005's "X&Y" didn't get a lot from either album.

Before introducing Coldplay, Lightbody said it had "about the most awesome arena show you'll ever see in your lives."
Perhaps there was a bit of hyperbole in that, but after underwhelming turnout for bands like Green Day and Nine Inch Nails, it was exciting to see a Des Moines audience embrace an alternative arena act.

Two unidentified men who appeared to be wearing concession-worker work clothes robbed Wells Fargo Arena concession employees at gunpoint late Friday night, report the Des Moines Register today.

The Des Moines arena was staging a concert by rock band Coldplay. Witnesses told police one of the men worked a different concession stand earlier in the evening. No arrests were made after the men left the area with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Witnesses said the men, wearing clothes labeled with the name of Wells Fargo concession company Ovations Food Service approached workers at a concession stand approximately 9:30 p.m. One pulled a small-caliber handgun and pointed it at workers, witnesses reported. He then demanded money, which he stuffed in a backpack, and also took a cell phone. The suspects left through side door of the arena generally not used by the public.

Arena officials were checking surveillance videos and working through lists of temporary workers to try to identify the men.

I was at this show!
It was the best night of my life.

I had seen them once before in Minnesota last fall- but this totally took the cake.
Why was it sooo good, you ask?!
1.) it's Coldplay- DUH! : )

2.) I got handed front row center tickets!!! I went from being in the nosebleeds- sec302-row k- the last row- to the center row 3. When we got down there we found out that row3 center= FRONT ROW... HOLY CRAP. What an amazing experience!

Ohhhhhkay. Review time. I got into Des Moines at about 3:30 and kind of drove around for a bit. At 4, I parked and had a nice long walk to the venue in the POURING rain:veryangry2:. I was soaked for the rest of the night but I got over myself because its COLDPLAY!

I went to this show because I volunteered with Oxfam (an amazing organization and I strongly suggest you volunteer at a show at least once)! I ended up getting the most signatures which was awesome! I got an Oxfam/Coldplay shirt! Here is our awesome group!

Everyone say hi to Soha if you see her! She's the one in the yellow pants! She's an awesome and so fun to talk to!

After we were done going around asking the concertgoers to sign our petition we met back at the Oxfam table to get our tickets. Soha told us that she got us really great seats. I thought, 'Sweet! Hopefully we'll be in the 200s instead of the 300s!' NOPE. She got us Row 10 Seats in the CENTER section. When we got to our seats, we were dead even with the end of the ramps! SO CLOSE!

Coldplay finally got on at 9:15. They were ON too! Jonny was so dancey, Will was pounding the shit out of the drums, Chris was all over the place, and Guy even had an extra bounce in his step! The highlights of the evening for me 42 (with Chris hitting that ridiculous note at the end, the cheeky bastard!), when Chris caressed Guy's head during In My Place:bomb::sneaky:, and I'm a Believer (when I heard GUY'S ANGELIC VOICE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!!!! :bomb: ). But what really made this night amazing was the crowd. They were all really into it. Even the corporate mofos were out of their skybox seats dancing!

Overall, it was a fantastic night! And it was Dan Green's 30th birthday! Happy belated birthday Dan! For those of you who don't know, Dan is Coldplay's sound engineer who has been with them since the beginning! I got a wave from Rick (Liz and I's roadie buddy) and said hi to Phil one of the camera men when he was roaming the halls before the concert!

So, a rep from Capitol came and got us and we waited downstairs. And we waited. And finally Jackie (the lady with the afro) came and got us and took us into the friends and family room. I was so humbled by how humble they are. They are the most down-to-earth guys you'll ever want to meet and Will was such a gentleman during our interview.

Ohhhhhkay. Review time. I got into Des Moines at about 3:30 and kind of drove around for a bit. At 4, I parked and had a nice long walk to the venue in the POURING rain:veryangry2:. I was soaked for the rest of the night but I got over myself because its COLDPLAY!

I went to this show because I volunteered with Oxfam (an amazing organization and I strongly suggest you volunteer at a show at least once)! I ended up getting the most signatures which was awesome! I got an Oxfam/Coldplay shirt! Here is our awesome group!

Everyone say hi to Soha if you see her! She's the one in the yellow pants! She's an awesome and so fun to talk to!

After we were done going around asking the concertgoers to sign our petition we met back at the Oxfam table to get our tickets. Soha told us that she got us really great seats. I thought, 'Sweet! Hopefully we'll be in the 200s instead of the 300s!' NOPE. She got us Row 10 Seats in the CENTER section. When we got to our seats, we were dead even with the end of the ramps! SO CLOSE!

Coldplay finally got on at 9:15. They were ON too! Jonny was so dancey, Will was pounding the shit out of the drums, Chris was all over the place, and Guy even had an extra bounce in his step! The highlights of the evening for me 42 (with Chris hitting that ridiculous note at the end, the cheeky bastard!), when Chris caressed Guy's head during In My Place:bomb::sneaky:, and I'm a Believer (when I heard GUY'S ANGELIC VOICE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!!!! :bomb: ). But what really made this night amazing was the crowd. They were all really into it. Even the corporate mofos were out of their skybox seats dancing!

Overall, it was a fantastic night! And it was Dan Green's 30th birthday! Happy belated birthday Dan! For those of you who don't know, Dan is Coldplay's sound engineer who has been with them since the beginning! I got a wave from Rick (Liz and I's roadie buddy) and said hi to Phil one of the camera men when he was roaming the halls before the concert!

I wanted to write this sooner but I didn’t get a chance. The show was GREAT! They sounded wonderful. You could feel the music moving through your body and energizing you. We were way up in the 304s, but even though we were way up high we were still able to see pretty well. We saw 2 girls get upgraded. They had no idea what was coming when the roadie sat down next to them. They looked shocked as he walked them down to the front. They were way at the back of our section, against the wall, so they had really bad seats. We tried to get the roadies attention but no luck. I was happy that the crowd was loud and singing along. I lost my voice from singing so loud. The b stage was the closest we got, it was directly under us. It is so nice that they move around and set up in different places so that if you have bad seats you will eventually get to see them closer. The butterfly confetti is amazing, as was everything else! On the way out we got some butterflies from the section below us and LRLRL with no problems. Thanks Coldplay for an amazing night!

Thanks! Yeah, he totally is. And yes, we met them all, but Will only stayed for the interview. When they walked in, though, they came over and shook our hands and gave the standard, "Hi, I'm.....nice to meet you"......then Chris started asking us about how we thought the crowd would be, since they'd not been there before. I told him we'd show them love and let them know they were appreciated. And we definitely did. He also asked what our sports teams were. And what state we were called (The Hawkeye State...."Like a hawk's eye?" :lol:)

We told them about the Winefest, which he mentioned during the show and was brought up in the Register review. It was just general chatty sort of stuff, nothing earth shattering.

It's gotta be just as awkward for them as it was for us, but they still made us feel very welcome and at ease. :D

Not me personally, no. The contests were completely separate, even though we were in the same room. The girl from Capitol Records asked Jackie if we could do a pic, but she said after the interview. And then it was just Will left, so hence why it's just us and him. It was a very strange thing, but I'm just glad to have gotten to meet them. I never in a million years thought it'd ever happen to me.

At the beginning there was another winner and her boyfriend. That's who the whole band really came in for. Then everyone left with the exception of the lady from Capitol Records and my aunt who had come with me. Very intimate little audience, but made it far less nerve-wracking!
