What seats did you end up with? Not so smart to buy them today...thinking you got either lawn or sections 6,7,8 or 9.....if you would have waited until tomorrow(when they go on sale) you would have been better off getting great seats for the same money

i got 6 together in the front of section 8 thru the presale on thursday, since i figured it would be my safest bet to get that many close. normally i'd wait til the general sale or get them from stubhub or whatever if i was just getting 2, but since my gf and i have seen the guys live from the close seats a few times and we have 4 first timers who wanted to sit with us i thought this was the way to go. when i checked at noon today this looked like a good idea because 6 together were only available about 15 rows or more behind what we got in the presale.

then, about 15 minutes ago i decided to see what was still available and was able to get 6 in the pit. so, needless to say, i now have 6 together in section 8 row H (it's actually the 4th row back from the handicap section) that i need to unload. so send me a message if you're interested i guess..

i am so excited to see the guys w/ my friends from the pit!! they definitely owe me haha

It's LiveNation because Post-Gazette is run by LiveNation.

Oh, and I'll be there. My friend and I got tickets towards the back but hey, it's was a reasonable deal seeing as each ticket came out to like 55 bucks and it will be the Coldplay concert either of us has gone to. Super excited!

chris def knows how to play to the crowd, so i wouldn't be surprised with a stillers shout out... especially since he threw out one about big ben during everything's not lost in 2005 and the guys had no idea who he was haha..

i'm definitely getting more and more excited each day! luckily kings of leon and tv on the radio are having shows here between now and then so the wait should be a bit more bearable... see you all on may 30!

i've been surprised how quiet the sales for this leg of the tour seem. i mean live nation still has over 30 pit seats open after the drop here... oh well, the people who don't buy them will be missing out on the best coldplay tour to come through the area yet.

IKNOW!!!! I was thinking the same thing, Ive actually been monitoring the Pit seats on livenation.com since they have went on sale, there hasn't been a day were the Pit section was not available, I thought i got lucky at first getting ahold of two....Usually the Pits for Post Gazette sell VERY quickly.

If you go to the Click N' Pick Seat map on Livenation.com for the show its says there is still 1 Pit ticket available, There were 2 available yesterday....
:stunned:
It REALLY makes me curious as to how big the PIT is or is going to be. From what i remember going to the Post Gazette Pavilion the PIT held about 50 people... maybe?

From the looks of it with all these dots on the Click N' Pick option. It appears that there are over 500 people in the PIT....Does anyone know how many people there are going to be ? or How big the section is? Its really going to suck if there's over 500 people there in the Pit with me, Looking over all those heads isnt getting me too excited(if its true). I guess arrive there really early and try to get in front?

there were over a hundred listed on LiveNation after the ticket drop. then add whatever the scalpers had on StubHub and the likes and whatever actaul fans were able to pick up the first go round. so i'd imagine it would be a couple hundred, but with such a big stage that could mean it still only goes back a handful of rows.

The doors open at 6:30, I think. I'm going to try to get there around 3 or so to hang out for a bit. I just went to the Hershey show (really good, BTW), and my whole family is going to this one. Pittsburgh Preview:

When Prince played the Arena a few years ago, people walking in were delighted to be handed a copy of his new album, "Musicology." Coldplay isn't going that far, but the beloved British alt-rock band will be passing out free copies of a nine-track live album that it very well could have been selling at Wal-Mart.

Why the gift?

"This last year we enjoyed playing live more than we ever have," says guitarist Jonny Buckland. "It was the most fun and we were feeling like we've been playing better than we ever have. We feel like the crowds have been better than ever as well, in terms of how much people sing along and how much energy they bring. So we felt that we wanted to record that and we thought, well, 'Let's make a record of that and give it away.' It seems like the right thing to do. It was no more considered than that."

The tour that brings Coldplay to Pittsburgh for the opener of the Post-Gazette Pavilion season is an extension of the Viva La Vida tour that started last June and already has thrilled fans across the United States, Europe and Australia.

"Viva," the band's fourth album, was another bona fide success for Coldplay, debuting at No. 1 on the charts and winning the Grammy for Best Rock Album. It even won acclaim from critics, something for which Coldplay has had mixed results. Most were on board with "Parachutes" and "A Rush of Blood to the Head," but Coldplay started to lose people with the paler "X&Y." Imagine the critic for The New York Times declaring you "the most insufferable band of the decade."

"You read some of it," Buckland says of the criticism. "You try not to read it but somehow you're drawn to it like a moth to the flame. I think you try to take positive things out of the bad press. I think it's good in a way to examine what's good and what isn't. I think sometimes critics have a really good point about what you're doing, and whether it could be better. Sometimes you feel like they're wrong. Other times, they're really right and that's probably when it hurts the most. You have to change it, so it's probably useful. As far as good press goes, I think you almost don't register it. It's the bad press that sticks with you, unfortunately."

Coldplay has had to get used to comparisons to either Radiohead or U2 or a combination of both in every story about the band.

"I really don't mind them at all," Buckland says. "At first, we felt a bit limited by [the comparisons] maybe. I don't really get that upset about them. I can see their influence in some of our songs, but not everything. They haven't accused us of plagiarism," he adds with a nervous laugh.

Buckland refers to charges by guitar wiz Joe Satriani that the song "Viva La Vida" copped a melody from his instrumental "If I Could Fly."

"There isn't a lot I can say, other than, these things take an interminably long time to deal with," Buckland notes.

On the morning of the interview, a new wrinkle develops with folk-rocker Cat Stevens saying he actually used the melody before that, during his epic "Foreigner Suite."

"I just did an interview about 20 minutes ago and that was the first someone told me about it," Buckland says. "But I don't know anything about it.

"Are we being sued?" he says sheepishly.

Then he adds, "Well, we can't have copied both of them."

When it's pointed out that this happens quite often, usually behind the scenes, when bands get this successful, Buckland says, "Yeah, it's perhaps no coincidence that it is our most played song."

On the bright side, Coldplay surely has money to burn after the popularity of "Viva La Vida" and a tour of venues much bigger than the Palumbo Center, where it first played in Pittsburgh. Back then, singer Chris Martin would hang close to his keyboard. Now the shows are more animated to play to the last row.

"The bigger the place you play the bigger you have to make it," Buckland says. "Now we try to play all around the arena, play out to the audience to try to make it feel a bit more intimate. If you sit in the back of a giant venue, you feel like you haven't been to anything."

One of the byproducts of amping up the live show for bigger venues is the tendency for acts, such as U2 or Bruce Springsteen, to write bigger songs, sometimes losing the intimacy.

"I suppose it can happen," Buckland says. "I think often when you come straight off tour and go into the studio, it takes a few months for it to get out of your system. I think you stop purely thinking about playing live in large places. At first when you get in the studio you feel like everything you do should get a round of applause. You go in with a big ego. It takes a while for that to get displaced."

Coldplay won't be going back into the studio until after the tour, but to hold people over until the next record, it did release an EP called "Prospekt's March," which contains a few songs, like the rocker "Glass of Water," that might turn up in concert.

"There were a lot of arguments about why that didn't make the record," he says. "The EP itself is made up of songs from the 'Viva' sessions, but for some reason or another we didn't feel like they fit. We really did like the songs, but we wanted to keep it short and make it a complete thing, so some things had to go. I think we felt with 'X&Y,' we probably made a slightly too long record. We didn't want to make that mistake again and we were willing to sacrifice those songs we thought were good to make the album better."

Writing and recording a new album these days is a bit more complicated than it was back when the band formed as students in 1998, as the members have moved on to family life. Buckland says it has changed the band dynamic, in some good ways.

"I'd say we're a lot more kind to each other. At times when we were a lot younger we could be quite cruel to each other -- you know, demanding -- whereas now we're a bit more accepting of people's little foibles and idiosyncrasies. We're more accepting of each other, a bit nicer."

show's just been moved up a half hour, so the howling bells will be on at 7:00 instead of 7:30, pete yorn from 7:50 to 8:30 and coldplay to come on around 9:00.

the show's info message says the parking lots will open at 5:30 and the gates will open at 6:30. but that was before the start time was moved up, so i'm gonna assume those will be moved up a half hour as well.

now i just gotta hope the band is well!!

yeah, its a pretty intense day in the burgh.

speaking of which, i doubt anyone with ties to the band is reading this, but if you are, could you please tell the band NOT to mention the game at all :)

im a season ticket holder and only missed 3 other games all season, so this is killing me tonight, but the concert it is! we have a group of 14 ppl going (in the PIT) and we are DVRing the game, hoping to not have the ending ruined and watch it when we get home.

I advised him not to mention it, but he might have to make small talk if he needs the crowds attention:D

For everyone who went to this concert...Did Chris mention anything about him getting ill, and does he seem well?

jrheinz86
31-05-2009, 06:03 AM
he didn't say anything about the illness all night. his voice sounded as good as i've ever heard and it even seemed that at some points in the show he was kind of going out of his way to show that his voice was absolutely perfect (waiting for the crowd to quiet before belting out some notes and things like that)... so hopefully the illness is a thing of the past and some very unfortunate circumstances.

Me and my friend went early and stood in line and ended up getting front row pit,, we were pretty close to center but a little off to the left next to a security gaurd. I took 114 pictures on a brand new top of the line canon camera i just baught a day before the show and so the pictures came out amazing.I also recorded Politik and Scientist full. Im going to post tomorrow with a review, for now im going to watch the Pens game that i recorded...hope they won!

Chris did make reference to Guy not feeling 100%. Chris sounded amazing, so maybe it was Guy who was sick.

Anyway, tonight (or yesterday really) was my first Coldplay show and boy did it live up to expectations. I can't even describe it right now. Maybe later, after some sleep.

It's always a concern when a band cancels the two previous stops on the tour amid reports that the singer lost his voice.

And it's not like Coldplay's Chris Martin doesn't need it, with all those high falsettos.

Last night for the opening of the Post-Gazette Pavilion season, he didn't seem to be feeling any ill effects -- not if he could handle the sustained notes on "Cemeteries of London."

Martin and his mates marched on stage (after opening sets by Howling Bells and Pete Yorn) in those colorful quasi-military jackets, twirling sparklers, and then sparkled through a nearly two-hour set of anthemic British rock.

Coldplay hasn't been around these parts for several years, during which time the band has swelled musically and visually to fill the big stage. With "Viva la Vida" in the set now, Coldplay even has a good soccer stadium chant to rile the adoring fans.

The show would have been entertaining even without the sound (and there are plenty of people who prefer Coldplay without the sound, but let's not get into that). Nearly every song came with a visual, from the red lasers on "Clocks" to the giant yellow balloons for "Yellow" to the blinding strobes on "Politik" as Martin urged us to "open up your eyes."

Coldplay also wasn't bound to the stage. Martin ventured off to auxiliary one for "The Hardest Part," allowing him to show off some of his piano training. Soon after, the foursome grabbed acoustic instruments and marched up to lawn stage for a loose mini-set that included "Green Eyes," a "Let's Go Pens" chant and a cover of The Monkees' "I'm a Believer," with drummer Will Champion taking charge on acoustic guitar. And who says Coldplay isn't innovative? Have you ever seen a choreographed "cellphone wave" across an amphitheatre lawn?

Martin, who clung to his piano back on that first visit to Pittsburgh, proved to be a lively, smiling frontman shaking the rafters with rockers like "In My Place," "Glass of Water" and "Politik" while also connecting emotionally with tender songs like "Fix You" and "The Scientist," part of the second encore.

Even the dudes in the Penguins jerseys, who may or may not have been dragged there by their girlfriends or wives, seemed to be drawn in by Coldplay's shimmering art-pop.

I recorded The Scientist and Politik in full with that camera...They came out great...The only thing is since im a newbie to the camera...I tilted the camera side ways at some points when recording(to get a long view of Chris playing piano mainly) ...So now in parts of the songs the camera changes from the horizontal to the vertical view but the camera doesnt adjust to the view automatically, meaning you have to tilt your head to the side everytime i tilted the camera to get the vertical shot:laugh3:

..This might sound a bit confusing, but i was wondering if there is a video editor out there of some sort so that i can edit the video and just rotate the angle at the parts i turned the camera long ways....Does anything know about one? Ide really like to share these videos with you all, their in excellent quality but its just so anonying to have to tilt your head every now and then...:embarassed:

Let me just start by saying that this was one of the absolute greatest nights of my life. I convinced almost my whole family to come (husband, mom, dad, brother, brother's girlfriend, other brother, sister-in-law) because I knew how amazing they were after seeing them in DC on Halloween.

We got there early to tailgate but the parking lot was closed, so we got turned away and found a crappy dirt road to cook out on - class Pennsylvania style :). Once we got into the lot, my husband and I ran to the gate to wait for them to open. We had lawn seats, so every member of my family was instructed to RUN on to the part of the lawn nearest the front and throw their bodies down to block anyone else from sitting there. This would have worked, too, had it not been for me sighting the "C" stage on the lawn. I threw my blankets down in front of it and called my whole family over.

As soon as the concert started, we stepped up and were leaning on the metal fence that surrounded their small stage the whole time. When the boys ran out to the stage, we were the first line of people there. We were about four feet away from them - no joke. If they would have fallen, they would have literally fallen on top of me. Johnny leaned down and slapped my brother's hand! Then, Guy looked at my sign! I was DYING for Chris to look my way, but he kept his eyes looking out to the thousands of people far out on the lawn. I sreamed my lungs out - seriously. I would scream so loud and hard that I would run out of breath. Then, I giggled like crazy until I got my breath back. Then, I'd let out another whopper of a scream. My poor husband stood right behind me to prevent me from getting crushed into the railing. He took pictures the whole time - which I'll post soon. :)

When Chris was introducing Will for DWNC, the crowd started chanting, "Let's Go Pens!" (for Pittsburgh Penguins). Chris couldn't understand what they were saying. At one point, he leaned down and asked MY BROTHER what a Pen was!!! My brother explained and then Chris asked the crowd what they were talking about on the microphone. Then, he went into, "If you're a fan of Ben's, Everybody shout Let's Go Pens!" When their set out there was done, my brother's girlfriend managed to get two guitar picks! I cannot even describe what it was like to be so close to them all on the stage in the lawn. I absolutely love the band, and am so in love with Chris. But after seeing them so close, it really humanized them all for me. I tend to think of them as these giant superheroes, but when it comes down to it they're just a bunch of guys doing what they love to do. I mean, they're someone's dad or brother or husband. It really made me see them in a different light and made me respect them a lot more as regular people, which is a great feeling.

It was amazing. Chris shouted out to Pittsburgh a ton of times during the show and everyone was screaming with excitement. This was the third show I've been to of theirs and it was by far the best. You could tell they were well rested and were having a blast, even though Chris coughed really bad on the lawn stage and actually spit something up in between songs. Guess he's still recovering?? Chris told us after Fix You that that was the best he had every heard from an audience - 110%. My whole family loved it - even my parents. They're dying to do it all over again soon. It was the best night of my life and I cannot wait to go again. Thank you, COLDPLAY!!! :D

Thank you! I totally forgot to say that I nwo consider myself a "friend" of Chris's and Johnny's. hahah During "Green Eyes," Chris said "my green eyes" and looked at Johnny. I was trying to explain it to my mom, who was up at the metal railing with me, so I yelled,"That's because Johnny has green eyes!" as if she didn't get it. hahah About thirty seconds later, I saw Chris say that exact same thing to Johnny and they laughed!!! So....because I made them laugh, the three of us are now officially friends...or at least that's the story I'm going with. :D

Anyone know how to upload pics directly to the gallery for this show? I'll post my pics here in a minute, but I just was curious. Thanks!!

First you need to sign up for an image hosting website(photobucket.com) then once created youll need to upload your images to photobucket. When you have that done you can post the pictures by clicking on the 'insert image' icon when you go to sent your message, it will ask for the url that the picture is in. Photobucket.com will provide you with the url once the picture is uploaded....

My questions however seem to be going unanswered , "Was there anyone else in the PIT for this show? I was wearing the twisted logic tour shirt in the front...I remember we had some funny situations with people trying to cut in front'

-and-

is there anyway to edit video , i recorded the scientist and politikl in from my where i was in the pit(see the picture i posted)...since i just purchased the camera i didnt know that when you tilt the camera vertically it doesnt record it that way...so now i have the 2 (extremely good) videos i have that half way in the show you have to tilt your head to the side :embarassed: . I just need to edit it so that i can flip the part of the song i tilted my camera vertically to. Basically edit that part of the video at a 90 degree angle....

You're welcome! :kiss::kiss:

I love your pics!!
They deserved to be seen bigger and I couldn't go to sleep before I found out how to see them bigger!

And you're so lucky to have a video posted on coldplay.com from your concert, filmed nearby where you were standing!

See you around!

Wow.. I loooove all your pictures. Thanks!
Unfortunatly, I only had my crappy phone, and the few ones I did snap came out like I was yards away. Even though, I was up close and personal in the pit!!

This was the first Coldplay concert I've been to and they didn't disappoint. I'll try to post some pics but here's my quick recap of the night...

We got to the pavilion a little after 5 (after first being turned away around 3). We parked and were the first in our line at one of the entry gates. As soon as they opened the gates, we headed to the pit and stood right in front, stage-right. We thought about standing closer to one of the short side ramps, but opted to get as close to center as possible. The pit didn't really get packed until sometime during the Pete Yorn set, I'd say. All I know is once Coldplay came on, it was packed, but still not overcrowded.

The opening acts were entertaining. I didn't know much from them, but they kept my interest and helped the time pass by waiting for Coldplay.

As far as the Coldplay concert...same set list as previous Summer 09 shows, which is fine by me. Since I've not seen them before, I didn't care about there being no changes yet. Chris seemed to be in great spirits. It took him a few tries to finally belt out that last note on "42." There is video of that on YouTube...his facial expressions are classic. He also had a little trouble starting "The Hardest Part" - but took it all in stride. As mentioned (and seen on YouTube), he stepped on Will's cord during "Death Will Never Conquer"...and the "Let's Go Pens..." chanting (again on YouTube and the blog on Coldplay's site) and interaction with Chris was fun. He did mention Guy was not feeling particularly well, but some speculate a hangover and nothing serious. He didn't miss a beat though.

Overall, it was fun bouncing yellow balloons, gazing at lazers, collecting colorful butterflies, singing along and just taking in the band. I'm sure the light show is more impressive from a distance, but being so close to the actual band was a great experience.

Did anyone manage to get a setlist from the show? We tried, but no luck. Also, did anyone notice the woman with a child in her arms dancing on the main stage in the dark during "Green Eyes"? It wasn't Gweneth. They disappeared backstage as soon as the song ended. It was kind of cool to see that.

Okay, pics to follow...

vivayellow- Ide say i was about 4 people across from you, I was more center if anything, off just a little to the left - Check out the pics i posted..

I did noticed the lady with the baby, thats was pretty cool, i know everyone around me was questioning if that was Gweneth, that wasnt her though? I couldnt tell it was too dark.... The setlist didnt change at all, its the same as any of the other shows which can be viewed on this thread and several others..Amazing night, wish i could meet more people with pictures near me and maybe some videos. I know a girl right beside me had a blackberry and was taking pictures with it.

Just an older Sony Cybershot. Obviously, I had an awesome spot...never been so close before. The keys I find to getting good pictures are not using the flash, limiting using zoom and taking many, many pictures. Probably only a third of my pictures came out well. I had tons of blurry ones, too. Chris moves way too fast! :)

So I guess that was Chloe and Violet dancing during "Green Eyes"? I can't really tell by my picture, but that's what most people think.

So...is anyone else totally bummed about the concert being over? I keep reliving it in my head and can't believe how amazing it was. I've been to a ton of concert (only 3 Coldplay) and this was BY FAR the best I've ever seen. So sad it's over...I have no awesome posts to look forward to on this thread now. :(

the only people in the world who will probably care about this are on this board! hahah

I finally uploaded videos i took from shows in Pittsburgh, PA & Mansfield, MA (Eastern, US) this past summer. They are from the front row - some are pretty bad but some are pretty fun (chris's ad-libbing during VLV)! :) Perfect to watch if you are getting excited for an upcomming show!

ENJOY!
