View Full Version : 14-Mar-09: Coldplay to play Sydney Bushfire Benefit Show, Sydney, Australia [Live broadcast Triple J]

20-02-2009, 02:59 PM
Speculation is mounting down under that veteran Aussie promoters Michael Gudinski and Michael Chugg are co-ordinating simultaneous stadium concerts in support of the country's bushfire and flood appeals.
Word is that the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground and the 45,000-plus capacity Sydney Cricket Ground will host concerts on March 14, while unconfirmed reports suggest the likes of Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Jimmy Barnes, the Veronicas and a reunited Midnight Oil could be among the names on the bill. Coldplay is touring Australia shortly and are booked to play Sydney Acer Arena that evening.
Confirmation of "two major music industry bushfire and flood relief concerts" was made in an email late this afternoon inviting the media to a Feb. 24 press conference at the MCG.
News of the benefit concerts emerged from an unlikely source - the sports pages. Australia's cricket administrators are in a quandary about its centrepiece state final, which is booked-in for March 13-17 at the MCG - a time and place at loggerheads with the mooted event.
At least 209 people are confirmed dead as a result of the bushfires which have raged across areas of Victoria, in the south east of Australia, while areas in the north of the country have been battling major floods, causing damage estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Whats happened in Australia is a tragedy, if Chris and the lads are able to lend their names to a worthy cause, I'm sure they will, besides they seem to enjoy springing surprises!:sneaky: they always have something up their sleeve!:curtain:

The problem is, Coldplay are booked at Sydney Entertainment Centre on the 14th
And yes, I would love nothing else more than seeing them at the MCG. Then, I think my life may be partially more complete than it was otherwise.

that would be so amazing i can't think straight. i'm in melbourne and i'll be there. even if coldplay aren't playing, it'd be mindblowing - i mean, where else can you see Kings of Leon and the Foo Fighters at the same concert? if Coldplay are there as well my life will be beyond perfect.

In today's herald sun, it mentioned that the cricket game has been moved to make the MCG free for a benefit concert.

If this happens, it will most likely go like this: there will be two concerts on the same day, the sat 14th. KOL (in melb that night) will headline the melb show, and Coldplay the sydney show.
Which (if it happens) kinda sucks, cos I'd prefer if they had them both playing at the same venue on different days, not both on the sat.
I guess we'll just have to wait until the Tuesday press conference..
Cobalt
21-02-2009, 10:14 AM

But if they are indeed playing that benefit concert I can has tickets, parentals?

Foo fundraiser
US rockers Foo Fighters may headline a twin-city fundraiser for bushfire and flood victims.
Touring promoters Michael Chugg and Michael Gudinski will stage simultaneous rock events in Melbourne and Sydney on March 14.
Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon are in talks for the MCG show and Coldplay is tipped for the Sydney show.
Chugg and Gudinski will officially announce the shows on Tuesday.
Local stars Silverchair, Powderfinger, Eskimo Joe, Jimmy Barnes and The Veronicas have offered to play at the benefits.
And John Farnham may be lured out of semi-retirement to support relief efforts, but his manager, Glenn Wheatley said The Voice needs to get match fit.
"This tragedy is the only reason for him to consider doing anything," Wheatley said. "John will find it harder than most to do a major live performance as he has not performed in more than three years and had no intention of going out again.
"He has not had a band together in all this time, so it will require an enormous amount of work to pull something together."
Yesterday actor Lisa McCune and singers Russell Morris and Darryl Cotton headlined the Chief Commissioner's Bushfire Appeal Concerts at Melbourne Town Hall.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon said the concert provided an opportunity for communities touched by the devastation to come together to help raise money and for members to unite in support of their emergency services colleagues.
"This is a great opportunity for Melburnians to show their support for bushfire survivors and emergency services colleagues," she said.
"Many members of the emergency services have witnessed firsthand the devastation the bushfires have brought upon communities, so this is an opportunity for them to help support the fundraising efforts.
"Over the past week, police bands have been performing at relief centres across the state and many residents have said how much they've appreciated the performances."

this is GA right ? I say you give up your place in line for that one show, and attend the acoustic gig. In the end, you'll see them 5times in Sydney. Plus, you'll need a break from all the waiting in line. More chances to be front when you got some rest.
3 front rows, 1 a little behind and 1 acoutic set. OR 4 possible front rows.. you do the maths ! :P

Coldplay, Kings of Leon to headline bushfire relief concerts
TWO of the world's biggest acts and a re-formed Midnight Oil will headline major bushfire benefit concerts in Melbourne and Sydney.
British superstars Coldplay will join US rock act Kings of Leon to headline the concerts which feature an all-star line-up of Aussie and international acts.
Premier John Brumby today joined promoters and artists to launch bushfire concerts Sound Relief which will be staged simultaneously at the MCG and the SCG on Saturday March 14.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett will make a comeback with band Midnight Oil while iconic Australian act Hunters and Collectors will reform for the Melbourne event.
In a marathon effort, Aussie bands Jet and Wolfmother will perform at both the Sydney and Melbourne concerts.
The line-up for the Melbourne concert includes Augie March, Bliss N Eso with Paris Wells, Gabriella Cilmi, Hunters and Collectors, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson with Troy Cassar-Daly, Jack Johnson, Jet, Kings of Leon, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, Split Enz and Wolfmother.
The bill for Sydney’s Sound Relief concert includes Coldplay, Eskimo Joe, Hoodoo Gurus, Icehouse, Jet, Josh Pyke, Little Birdie, The Presets, Wolfmother and You Am I. More acts will be announced for the Sydney concert.
Mr Brumby said all ticket sales proceeds from the Melbourne Sound Relief concert will go to the Victorian Bushfire Relief Fund.
A 50 per cent share of ticket sales profits from the Sydney Sound Relief will go to the bushfire fund, with the other 50 per cent to go to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund in Queensland to help flood victims.
“We are picking up the pieces after the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history and it is fitting that a concert to raise money to rebuild communities devastated by these fires will also be among the single largest music concert event in our country’s history,” he said.
Tickets will go on sale for $75 at 9am on Wednesday March 4 through Ticketek 132 849.

Iconic rock bands reform for bushfire benefit
Some of the most popular acts in Australia, including Wolfmother, Jet, Paul Kelly, Gabriella Cilmi, Kasey Chambers and internationals Kings of Leon and Jack Johnson will play the Sound Relief bushfire benefit at the MCG on March 14.
In a major coup for organisers, Labor MP Peter Garrett has agreed to reunite with iconic Australian rock group Midnight Oil.
Midnight Oil, Hunters & Collector and Split Enz will reform especially for the Melbourne event, while Coldplay (acoustic), Eskimo Joe, Hoodoo Gurus and Icehouse will play the Sydney version of the show held simultaneously at the SCG on the same day. Jet and the new look Wolfmother will play both cities.
Each band will play about 20 minutes of hits.
Organisers of what Premier John Brumby called "the biggest music event in Australian music history" expect more than 100,000 people attend the shows. With all involved donating their services, they hope to raise about $5 million for charity.
"Between the two cities, there's a multi-million dollar bill there, but it's costing us zero," said Sydney co-organiser Mark Pope.
With two of the most popular international bands in the country, Kings Of Leon and Coldplay, both touring here at the same time, the chosen date was a no-brainer. Both bands will play in the mid afternoon before preparing for sold out shows that night.
The Bushrangers Victorian cricket team has agreed to move its home Sheffield Shield final from the MCG to St Kilda's Junction Oval.
"Everyone in Australia wants to help in some way," said Kasey Chambers.
"I can't put out fires, I can't rebuild houses, but I can use my position as a musician to help raise some money and hopefully inspire people to help find their thing that they can do."
"It's pretty easy for us as musicians to turn up for half an hour and play music," said Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale. "These people are going to have to do a lot of work for years. So if we can raise as much money as possible to help them rebuild their lives, then that's the least I can do."
Mark Seymour said it took something as significant as this to reform Hunters & Collectors after 11 years.
"We felt our time had come and gone but the sheer magnitude of this tragedy really hit home to all of us ... the tragedy simply came about because they happened to live in a certain postcode. What's happened to them could have happened to any of us," he said.
"I never expected to be playing with the band again, so this is a major event in my lifetime."
Melbourne promoter Michael Gudinski said it had been "phenomenal" seeing the music industry pull together in this horrific time.
"The Sound Relief concerts are for the survivors of the bushfires," he said. "The sad reality is that rebuilding their lives and communities will be a lengthy and costly process. Without doubt these concerts will be once in a lifetime events that will live on in the memories of everyone who attends."
Mr Gudinski said "it took a few phone calls to the prime minister, to (Treasurer) Wayne Swan'' to get Mr Garrett on board for Midnight Oil's first show since 2005's WaveAid tsunami benefit in Sydney.
"I have hardly sung a note since the Oils last played at WaveAid,'' said Mr Garrett in a statement.
"But this event is so unique and important that it will be terrific to now catch up with my mates and put on a performance that gives all those people affected by the terrible events what they dearly need.''
Sydney promoter Michael Chugg said the shows would remember those who had lost as well as celebrate the heroes of this devastating story.
"Around the world, some of the words that are used to describe Australians include big hearted, generous, battlers and troopers," he said.
"These concerts will honour all of those characteristics of the Australian people, both those who have suffered so much through this terrible tragedy, but also saluting the heroes who fought against the fires, and the courageous people whose fight is just beginning.
"With the help of the Australian music community, these concerts hope to bring people together, not just on the hallowed turf of the MCG and SCG, but around the country as we share the joy of live music."
Tickets will be sold for $75 and go on sale from Ticketek 132 849 or www.ticketek.com.au on Wednesday March 4 at 9am. General Admission standing on the field and reserved seating in the stands will be available for both concerts.
All of the profits from the Melbourne concert and half of the profits from Sydney will be donated to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. The other half of the Sydney profits will be donated to The Premier's Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in QLD to aid the victims of the Queensland floods.

And good luck finding a new school Cobalt!
Anyone know the details of when Coldplay fly into Melb? I'd like to meet them in a non-stalkerish way
Oh! I'm with you, tauiwi!
They'll be in the air, for sure, on their way to Perth right now -- I expect them to be landing later in the afternoon today. And with 2 shows there, I'd bet they'd be heading to Melbourne pretty soon on/ or after the 28th.
I'm going to be checking flight schedules just in case; but if you hear anything... :D

Sound Relief announce amazing line-up; Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Jack Johnson + MORE!
The devastation of the current Victorian bushfires has left few unaffected. In response to our nation’s greatest ever natural disaster Australia’s music community have banded together for two stadium benefit concerts scheduled to run simultaneously in both Melbourne and Sydney on Saturday March 14, 2009 under the unified banner of SOUND RELIEF.
Michael Gudinski, Managing Director of The Frontier Touring Company said;
“The Sound Relief concerts are for the survivors of the bushfires. The sad reality is that rebuilding their lives and communities will be a lengthy and costly process. It has been phenomenal seeing everyone pull together in this horrific time. Without doubt these concerts will be once in a lifetime events that will live on in the memories of everyone who attends.”
Michael Chugg, Managing Director of Chugg Entertainment said;
“Around the world, some of the words that are used to describe Australians include “big hearted”, “generous”, “battlers and “troopers”. These concerts will honour all of those characteristics of the Australian people, both those who have suffered so much through this terrible tragedy, but also saluting the heroes who fought against the fires, and the courageous people whose fight is just beginning. With the help of the Australian Music Community, these concerts hope to bring people together, not just on the hallowed turf of the MCG and SCG, but around the country as we share the joy of live music. We will remember those who have lost so much, and celebrate the heroes of this devastating story.”
Both concerts will be held in their city’s most iconic venue; in Melbourne at the MCG and in Sydney at the SCG.
Some of Australia’s most legendary artists will be joined by leading International and Domestic chart-toppers.
The concerts will be a celebration of multiple music genres, with artists playing short sets packed with hits. Concert goers are encouraged to attend the concerts from start to finish as major artists will be spread across the bill right from the very start of the day.
Coldplay and Kings Of Leon, who both have sold out concerts on March 14 in Sydney and Melbourne respectively, have kindly donated time from their busy schedules to perform 3-4 songs in the early afternoon.
Tickets will be sold for $75 and will go on sale from Ticketek 132 849 www.ticketek.com.au on Wednesday March 4, 2009 at 9am. GA Standing on the field and reserved seating in the stands will be available for both concerts.
100% of the proceeds from the Melbourne concert will be donated to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
For the Sydney concert 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal and 50% will be donated to The Premier's Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in QLD to aid the victims of the Queensland floods.
Particular thanks is extended to the Victorian Premier’s Department, Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria for their magnanimous decision to move the Sheffield Shield final out of the MCG, in turn freeing this iconic venue to be used for the Melbourne Sound Relief concert on March 14.
Tickets to Sound Relief go on sale from Ticketek 132 849 or www.ticketek.com.au on Wednesday March 4 at 9am. Get in quick for what is set to be a once in a lifetime concert event.

Coldplay will open the Sydney Sound Relief event with a full band instead of the previously announced acoustic show.
In making the announcement, organizer Michael Chugg said “We were thrilled when Coldplay first agreed to be a part of Sound Relief, even just with an acoustic set, considering they already have eleven shows to play while they are in Australia. But now with the news that they will be opening the day in full band/electric mode, well, what a way to kick off this massive event!”
Sound Relief was announced last week to raise money for the victims of the Victorian Bushfires as well as those effected by the Queensland floods.
“Sound Relief is shaping up to be the greatest charity concert Australia has ever produced, we hope the whole of country can get behind us and show their support when tickets go on sale on Wednesday morning”.
The show will be held on March 14 at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Melbourne Cricket Ground.

TICKETS to the Sound Relief bushfire benefit concerts go on sale from 9am today, but don't expect to see any on eBay.
In an effort to head off the scalping problems that afflicted previous fund-raisers Wave Aid and Make Poverty History, the online auction house is taking the rare step of refusing to let people sell them on the site.
Ticketek, which is selling the estimated 100,000 tickets to the Melbourne and Sydney shows on March 14, has already announced a limit of eight tickets per buyer in an attempt to reduce scalping.
It also took the unusual step of contacting eBay and asking that it either not allow tickets to be sold on the site for profit — as is its practice with large sporting events such as the AFL grand final and the Commonwealth Games — or that it ban them altogether.
An eBay spokesman, Daniel Feiler, told The Age the company had taken this step on only a few occasions, including for the Live 8 charity concert in Britain in 2005.
"We want to see as much money as possible go to the bushfire appeal," Mr Feiler said.
He said the company had advanced filters and people checking to enforce the policy, but urged anyone who sees tickets for sale on the site to hit the "report this item" button.
As most tickets for major tours are sold on the first day of release, co-promoter Michael Gudinski said he would be shocked if the concert did not sell out. It is the biggest show Mr Gudinski has staged since the concert for the 25th anniversary of his label, Mushroom Records, at the MCG in 1999.
"That was my childhood dream, to fill the MCG with an all-Australian line-up," he said. "But this is different. This will be world-renowned. Two of the biggest bands in the world (Coldplay and Kings of Leon) will both be playing two shows in one day to be part of it — I've never seen anything like that."

Victorians have snapped up Sound Relief concert tickets with 60,000 selling in the first three hours.
The original ticket allocation for the March 14 concert at the MCG has sold out but more seats have been released.
Sound Relief spokeswoman Reegan Stark said there were still thousands of seated tickets available for the concert, which will raise money for bushfire survivors.
All standing tickets have been sold, Ms Stark said.
Overwhelming demand for the $75 tickets caused delays on Ticketek's website this morning which have since eased.
More than 25,000 tickets have been sold for the SCG concert, to be staged simultaneously.
Midnight Oil, Kings of Leon, Augie March, Jack Johnson, Hunters & Collectors, Split Enz, Paul Kelly and Jet will be among the performers at the Melbourne gig.
All profits from the Melbourne concert will be donated to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal while half of the profits from the Sydney concert will go to the bushfire appeal and half to victims of Queensland's recent floods.
Coldplay and Kings of Leon are expected to play three to four songs early in the afternoon of the Sydney and Melbourne concerts respectively.

Despite selling millions of albums and developing an edgier sound, Coldplay are yet to win over all their critics, the Sydney Morning Herald writes. For a band trading in supposedly inoffensive rock music, Coldplay have an extraordinary capacity to offend. There's the malarkey that goes with Chris Martin, the lively, idiosyncratic, tabloid-magnet frontman who is married to Gwyneth Paltrow. Then there's Coldplay's music.
In a genre demanding risk and ingenuity, Coldplay have frequently been laden by rock critics and fans alike with the dreaded "safe" tag. The band's biggest crime, in the eyes of naysayers, is they sell records. Tens of millions of them. If they are embraced by the masses who swallow Nickelback and Lady GaGa, they can't be any good then, can they?
Last year, that perception began to change. By employing veteran musician and producer Brian Eno for their fourth album, Viva La Vida, Coldplay shifted their sound and delivered one of their best records, one that at least compensated for their bloated third album, X&Y.
"If you listen to too many responses to things, you would just not do anything," Martin says of those who knock the band, backstage at one of their Melbourne gigs this week. "Whatever you do, somebody's not going to like it."
And the self-deprecating Martin is not being drawn into comparisons with U2 or a verbal spat with Bono, who this week caused a stir when he jokingly called the Coldplay frontman a "******". "What do you want me to say? I always thought he felt that way," Martin says. "The difficulty of the whole U2 thing is we're on our fourth record. So we're competing with people's fifth records. We're coming up to Revolver or Joshua Tree. We're at a very different stage."
Coldplay have just upgraded their set at the Sound Relief fundraiser for the Victorian bushfire and Queensland flood appeals (at the SCG next Saturday, March 14) from acoustic to electric. The band are glad to lend their services to the causes, Martin says.
"The bushfires show is a great thing for us to do. We're going to come out with all guns blazing. It will be the full Coldplay experience. The full arsenal. It was only a logistics issue we had to work out as to whether we played acoustics. It's all sorted. We're absolutely ready to go for the show."
Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion were living in the same London block of flats when they formed Coldplay in 1998. They were friends for a year before they began playing music together. Last week, they arrived in Australia for the first time in almost three years. More than 100 shows into a world tour, they have their 90-minute arena extravaganza down pat.
Although Viva is well represented, the set list also embraces Coldplay's biggest hits: Clocks, Yellow, Speed Of Sound, In My Place and The Scientist, which is performed on a mini-stage up in the nosebleeds. "We're better at designing shows and performances," bass player Berryman says. "We try to take a big space with a lot of people and make it feel as small as possible. We have different areas in the arenas we play. And we have a few production tricks up our sleeves."
Berryman says employing Eno (and co-producer Markus Dravs, who has worked with Arcade Fire) was an attempt to shift perceptions of the band and their overall sound. "We wanted to have different songs and sounds," he says. "Nobody wants to hear a band churn out the same record over and over. It gets boring. We wanted to freshen it up and see where things would lead us. There was no game plan. We wanted to turn heads and we got about halfway there to doing that."
Was it difficult balancing the creative requirement for experimentation with the expectations of their enormous fan base? "What we haven't left behind is songs and melody, which is what people like about us," he says. "It's how you dress those songs that makes a difference. We will always retain those elements, no matter what we do."
X&Y, released in 2005, was a painstakingly methodical record with a protracted recording and delayed release that famously shrunk the share price of the band's label, EMI. Although deemed a misstep for the band, it's a misstep that sold more than 10 million copies. "We thought the third record was a little bit too long to listen to from beginning to end," Berryman says when asked of its perceived faults.
So gratified are the band with the contrasting circumstances in making Viva La Vida, they are eager to repeat the process and have already started work on a follow-up.
Although Berryman says "you can't be a popular band without having negative press or backlashes", there is no doubt the band have been stung. In particular, The Case Against Coldplay, a stunningly disparaging New York Times essay written in 2005, hurt. The paper's music writer, Jon Pareles, called Coldplay "the most insufferable band of the decade".
Berryman says wearily of the piece: "I can understand a lot of the reasons why people don't like our music. But I find it strange somebody would go to such a strong length to try to topple it. If you don't like it, fine. But why spend your days coming up with a plot to bring us down?"
Speaking to the band's unanimity, although Martin is responsible for many of its biggest hits, band members are given an equal songwriting credit on each track. "Every song has a different origin," Berryman says. "It becomes difficult to break down what each individual contribution is. It could be an entire song Chris has written on the piano or it could be a drum loop or a guitar riff that gets developed. There is no production line."
42, for instance, arguably the best song from the current album, Martin wrote on the piano. "We added the instrumentation and the hooks," Berryman says.
Bearing this in mind, it only makes sense, Berryman says, that Martin would take what is said or written about the band most to heart. "Things are usually directed towards him," Berryman says. "It's in his nature to worry about that. What's good about our band is we all support and stick up for each other. If somebody is having a rough time, we help."

YouTube - John Farnham - You're The Voice
COLDPLAY may have staged a coup for their performance at Sound Relief - coaxing John Farnham out of retirement to perform his signature hit You're The Voice.
Organisers were quiet yesterday about the collaboration to open the concert at the SCG next Saturday. Rumours of Whispering Jack's cameo at the Sydney event began midweek when Coldplay drummer Will Champion said he had been learning John Farnham songs.
Coldplay appeared to confirm the rumour when Chris Martin segued from one of their songs into You're The Voice during the band's Melbourne concert on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, Barry Gibb has emerged as the latest contender to headline the SCG event on March 14. According to undercover.com.au, Molly Meldrum has brokered a deal with the Bee Gee. Gibb recently performed with long time collaborator Olivia Newton-John at a fundraiser in Hollywood. Organisers would not confirm Gibb was closing the SCG concert to raise money for the Victorian fire and Queensland flood victims.
He would join Coldplay, Jet, Wolfmother, Icehouse, Eskimo Joe, Taylor Swift, Hoodoo Gurus, You Am I, Josh Pyke, The Presets and Architecture In Helsinki. Midnight Oil and Hunters and Collectors will reunite at the MCG.

The last tickets to Melbourne's Sound Relief bush fire benefit concert have been snapped up, just hours after the last batch went on sale this morning.
Several international and Australian acts will perform at two charity events to be held simultaneously in Melbourne and Sydney on March 14. Money raised from the $75 tickets will go to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal for victims of Black Saturday.
Sound Relief organisers said the MCG concert in Melbourne sold out this morning after going on sale on Wednesday. "We weren't anticipating them to sell quite as well as they did. It's an amazing result, and a great show of support from the public," spokeswoman Reegan Stark said.
More than 76,000 fans are expected to attend the event. The Sydney concert is tipped to be sold out by the end of the week, with only a small number of its 50,000 tickets remaining. If the Sydney show sells out, almost $10 million will be generated through ticket sales.
Ms Stark said it was too early to tell how much money would be raised, with the figures to be fully disclosed on the Sound Relief website. Kings of Leon and Coldplay will headline the concerts, but many fans are awaiting the reunions of Midnight Oil and Split Enz.
The Melbourne bill includes Jack Johnson, Augie March, Gabriella Cilmi, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson with Troy Cassar-Daly, Liam Finn, Jet, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, Split Enz, Wolfmother and Bliss N Eso with Paris Wells.
The Sydney concert will feature an acoustic set by Coldplay as well as Josh Pyke, Eskimo Joe, The Hoodoo Gurus, Jet, Wolfmother, Icehouse, Little Birdy, The Presets, You Am I and the Midnight Juggernauts.

KYLIE Minogue is tipped to make a surprise trip home to Australia to perform at this Saturday's Sound Relief bushfire charity concerts.
The pop princess, who is currently in in Mumbai filming her first Bollywood movie, is expected to perform at both gigs in Sydney and Melbourne.
"Her people are definitely trying to make it happen; it's just a matter of timing," an event source told The Sunday Telegraph.
The Sound Relief concerts, which will raise money for the Victorian bushfire appeal and Queensland flood victims, will be held simultaneously at the Sydney and Melbourne cricket grounds.
Organisers have secured Bee Gee Barry Gibb to close the Sydney show.
They are also in negotiations with John Farnham, who is expected to perform his hit song, You're The Voice, with Coldplay.
"No matter what happens, I think this is going to blow people's minds," said Sound Relief's tour promoter, Michael Chugg.
"I believe Kylie has been asked to come to Sydney and sing with a couple of people."
Midnight Oil, fronted by federal Arts and Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, will re-form for the one-off gig. The last time they performed together was at the WaveAid fundraising event in Sydney in 2005.
Also set to perform in Sydney is Icehouse, Eskimo Joe, The Presets, Hoodoo Gurus and Josh Pyke.
Wolfmother and Jet will perform both in Sydney and Melbourne, flying between the events.
Teen sweetheart Taylor Swift, currently the biggest star in the US, selling more albums than any other artist in 2008, will play in Sydney.
"We're staying in Australia a couple of extra days so I can do it but it is something that was important to me," she said. "People down here have been so good to me, so I owe it back to help out with something that is really affecting this country."
Coldplay's Chris Martin said he would never have said no to Sound Relief.
"Something like this you would never say no because it would be terrible,"
Martin said. "It has been worldwide news, so it seemed like we would be real a***holes if we just sat in our hotel rooms saying 'we're not playing that'.
"When you come to Australia, you realise that Australians think of themselves as being far away from everywhere, but the rest of the world is watching, everyone likes you and everyone is watching you."

The Sound Relief concert to be held in Melbourne for Victorian bushfire victims has sold out, becoming the largest paid concert event ever held in Australia.
Several international acts will perform and some legendary Australian bands have re-formed for two benefit concerts to be held simultaneously at the Melbourne and Sydney cricket grounds on Saturday.
More than 78,000 tickets have been sold for the Melbourne event, which will feature the likes of Kings of Leon and Kylie Minogue. Extra tickets have been added for the Sydney concert, which will be headlined by Coldplay and The Presets.
More than 100,000 tickets, at $75 each, have been sold across both cities. The profits will add to the more than $100 million raised so far for the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. Half of the profits from the Sydney event will go towards helping Queensland flood victims.
Co-organiser Michael Gudinski said he was impressed with the Australian public's support. "It speaks volumes of the passion of our great country, helping a mate in trouble," he said.
He also confirmed rumours that pop princess Minogue would MC the Melbourne event. "To me, Kylie is Melbourne," Gudinski said. "Her attendance is the cherry on the top of an already phenomenal line-up."
Meanwhile, co-organiser Michael Chugg hinted that another addition would be made to the Sydney line-up. "This is the type of event that you'll be telling your grandchildren about many years from now," he said.

COLDPLAY have hinted at a surprise for fans during their set at this weekend's Sydney Sound Relief concert.
The British group are rumoured to be joined on stage by John Farnham to perform his iconic hit You're The Voice when they open the bushfire and flood benefit concert on Saturday.
Chris Martin and co played coy when asked about it ahead of the first Sydney concert of their Australian tour tonight. "Nothing particularly special is happening, probably at the end of the set," the singer said with a knowing smile. And because we're not doing anything special for it, we've had to do extra rehearsals."
The band played part of You're The Voice at one of their Melbourne shows last week, and admit they used to listen to it growing up in England. "It's hard to not be aware of it when you grew up in the time period we did," drummer Will Champion said. "(It was) absolutely everywhere, it was huge."
"It's funny, even when you play the smallest snippet of that, the whole place just goes with it, straight away," Martin added.
Coldplay are one of a handful of international acts, including Kings of Leon, Taylor Swift, Jack Johnson and Split Enz who will perform for the concerts in Sydney and Melbourne. Martin said when they first heard a benefit concert was being planned, they didn't realise the scale of the event. "We were in the middle of Japan and someone said, there's a benefit going on, and we just thought, oh it will be like a theatre thing," he said.
"We didn't really understand the extent of the fires and as soon as we got to Perth we realised - this is a big deal. "So we're very thrilled to be asked and we're just really excited to be able to do something useful."
Coldplay will take to the stage at 12.15pm, less than an hour after gates open at the Sydney Cricket Ground, because they have a sold-out concert in the city that night.
It's the first time the British superstars have played a midday festival timeslot for many years. "he first time we ever played a festival was Reading 1998, they hadn't even opened the gates when they made us go on. It was absolutely zero people," Champion said.
The band have already played shows in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane, and said the crowd response had been amazing. "The Australian sing-a-long factor is fantastic, much better than we thought it would be," Martin said. "We thought no one would come close to Italy and Spain, but it's been up there, I've got to say. So for that we say, thank you."

Coldplay weren't giving away much yesterday about their performance at the Sound Relief bushfire and floods benefit concert scheduled for Saturday but do know John Farnham's hit You're the Voice all the way through, however, and has been having secret rehearsals with an unknown artist during its Australian tour.
The band played a snippet of the song at one of its Melbourne shows on their Australia tour. "Even doing a snippet of that song ... everyone goes with it," Chris Martin said prior to Coldplay's first Sydney show last night. Coldplay is the opening act at the Sydney arm of Sound Relief. A similar concert will play simultaneously at Melbourne's MCG. Farnham will join the band on stage.
Martin said he was delighted the band could take part in the concert for such a worthy cause. "Before we got here, we didn't really understand the extent of the fires," he said. "It was only when we arrived in Perth that we realised, and from then we wanted to do it 150 per cent. We're just thrilled to be asked."
Martin and his colleagues Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman are in good spirits for this tour to promote their album Viva La Vida, which earned them three awards at the Grammys last month. Their mood is in sharp contrast with the tension that existed between them before they made the album after a lengthy, exhausting world tour.
"We play soccer a lot and table tennis," Martin said. "Our backstage area is like a fitness club. It's important not to become too fat on your fourth album."
The singer would not be drawn into a slanging match with Bono, who described the Coldplay frontman as a ****** on BBC Radio One two weeks ago. Martin preferred to sing the praises of Bono's outfit, U2. "They are the Manchester United of rock, so they must be doing something right," he said.
Coldplay was enjoying a less frenetic touring schedule and it would not be rushing into releasing a follow-up to Viva La Vida. "To me, a big band is like a relation at Christmas," Martin said. "You're pleased to see them for a bit, but then you really want them to f..k off. We are really grateful for what has happened to us for the last year or so, and we're going to keep touring for a bit, but to make people buy records we should probably disappear for awhile."
