COLDPLAY are coming to the UAE.
The British rockers will play at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi next month as part of their current tour.
Frontman CHRIS MARTIN, who is married to Hollywood actress GWYNETH PALTROW, said the band are looking forward to the gig.
"It will be amazing and we can't wait," he said.
The band, who have been nominated for a whopping seven Grammy Awards at tonight's musical oscar's ceremony, will hit the stage on March 28th at 9pm
The band will land in the UAE after touring Australia and the concert is already being tipped to sell out in record time.
Organisers Live Nation and Flash - who brought superstars CHRISTINA AGUILERA, BON JOVI and ELTON JOHN to the region last year are expected to release ticket information in the next few days.

Lame British Band, Coldplay, Coming to Dubai
If you’ve never missed the Dubai World Cup, but are also a devotee of the band Coldplay - you’re faced with a major dilemma this year.
tabloid! can exclusively reveal Coldplay will hit the stage at the Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi, on March 28 from 9pm.
The world’s biggest-selling musical act for 2008 has confirmed they are heading to the region for the first time to complete their current world tour
Just two days before the band vie for seven Grammy awards, frontman Chris Martin said he was looking forward to playing in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi and urged fans to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.
“It will be amazing and we can’t wait,” he said when contacted by tabloid! on the weekend.
Live Nation, who are flying the boys in following their final tour dates in Australia, said the concert would be a highlight of the music offerings in 2009.
Organised in conjunction with Flash, the company behind successful gigs including Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi and Elton John, the concert is predicted to sell out - a total of 15,000 tickets - in record time…

Coldplay are set for one of the biggest paydays of their career after been lured to play in the luxurious surroundings of a plush hotel in the United Arab Emirates.
The band are tipped to bank at least £1.4million for the gig at the Emirates Palace with all 15,000 tickets set to sell out immediately.
Chris Martin's men will play against a back drop of a private beach almost a mile long on the final stop of their world tour.
The band are the latest superstars to grace the venue with Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Christina Aguilera and Elton John all cashing in, in the past.
Promoter Elissa Murtaza said: 'Coldplay's debut performance in the Middle East is set to attract one of the biggest attendances in the UAE.'
'Regional fans of the band have waited a long time for this show and they won't be disappointed.'

Mercury Rev, fronted by Jonathan Donahue, will support Coldplay at the Emirates Palace on Saturday.
Great news! Mercury Rev are playing in Abu Dhabi. The downside is that it costs Dh300 and if you don’t leave as soon as they’ve finished, you might get some Coldplay on you. I joke, I joke. Yet for many, ragging on Chris Martin and chums is no laughing matter. From all the pained, po-faced column inches proclaiming this popular North London outfit to be, in the words of The New York Times’s Jon Pareles, “the most insufferable band of the decade”, you’d think they spent their days feasting on endangered species. Oh, Coldplay’s flaws are obvious enough: the simpering, samey songs, the worthiness, the smugness of the Martin ménage, etc. And yet none of this detracts from their talent: they write memorable tunes with a chilly, contemporary mood. Whenever Martin’s melodies have shown up without him attached, the effects have been perfectly pleasant. Who can deny the charm of Jamelia’s See It in a Boy’s Eyes? Or of Jay-Z’s Beach Chair? Thus history, furnishing a control test, refutes the sceptic. Besides, as Nietzsche once advised, “battle not with monsters lest you become a monster”. It’s a terrible thing when the hipper-than-thou haters start seeming less fun than Chris Martin himself.
In any case such admonitions may be unnecessary, for who can hate in the presence of Mercury Rev, surely the closest thing the world of sweeping indie rock possesses to an anti-Coldplay? Where the latter are cold, modern and sensible, the Rev trade in a sort of wayward, Tiffany-glass warmth. Even on their latest album, Snowflake Midnight, in which the band branches out into electronic textures and borrows a few shock tactics from their spiritual successors Animal Collective, the mood is as swooning and starry-eyed as ever. Rev fans tend to be die-hards, too, which is another reason why they make an intriguing choice of support for Coldplay. The Emirates Palace may find itself hosting to two very different tribes on Saturday. Somehow, I’d be surprised if it came to blows.
The Bolshoi ballet is coming to the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival this week with a gala performance of excerpts from Minkus, Tchaikovsky, Driges and others, followed a couple of days later by a gallop through Giselle. That the ballet is one of the great wonders of the cultural world – a 200-year-old company that has survived the rise and fall of Communism to stand as the iconic and definitive exponents of their art – is surely beyond question. They do grand shows, full of shameless magnificence. That has to be worth experiencing at least once, doesn’t it? Or twice, seeing as they’re offering.
Finally, if you fancy a sneak preview of the UAE’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale, head to Gallery One at the Emirates Palace on Thursday evening. The show, which includes work by Lamya Gargash and Tarek al Ghoussein, bears the oddly apologetic title It’s Not You, It’s Me. A phrase more usually associated with the gentle break-up let-down, this may seem to strike a pessimistic note; after all, the UAE’s relationship with the world’s most august biennial has just begun. Here’s hoping the exhibition is the start of something beautiful.

Abu Dhabi event consultancy Flash announced today that it has partnered with Abu Dhabi-based solar power systems integrator Enviromena, in order to offset the carbon emissions produced from the Coldplay Live in Abu Dhabi concert on March 28th, 2009. Flash is the first UAE-based events consultancy to actively offset such a large scale UAE music event.
All carbon emissions that are generated as part of the concert, whether for lighting, electricity, flights etc., will be calculated to generate the event’s total carbon footprint. Based on the total figure; ‘carbon credits’ will fund an international gold standard certified sustainability project.
The green initiative, which comes with the encouragement of environmental organisation Emirates Wildlife Society – World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF), also aims to raise awareness of the EWS-WWF’s Heroes of the UAE campaign, to promote energy sustainability in the country.
The concert, the final stop on Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” world tour, falls on the day of the globally-marked environmental initiative Earth Hour, which encourages people across the globe to switch off unnecessary lights and electricity for one hour to raise awareness about - and counteract the effects of - climate change. This year’s Earth Hour aims to encourage one billion ‘vote earth’ votes, and at the concert, EWS-WWF will directly address the 15,000 expected concert goers on what they can do as individuals to combat this global issue.
Enviromena has already conducted an initial audit into the event’s likely CO2 emissions and will conduct a full audit following the concert on March 28th. Prior to the concert, Flash is encouraging revellers to take a number of simple anti climate-change measures themselves, including switching all lights, air conditioning and electricity off before they leave home, and where possible carpooling to the event at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi.
John Lickrish, Managing Director, Flash said, “Flash understands the impact such a large concert has on the environment, and in launching this carbon offsetting initiative with Enviromena and the WWF, we are doing our bit in balancing out the impact our event will have on the environment. We also hope that in supporting the Heroes of the UAE campaign we are empowering concert goers with the necessary information so they as individuals can begin to combat climate change in their everyday lives.”
Enviromena CEO and President, Sami Khoreibi, explained the importance of the initiative; “Our company’s work revolves around reducing the impact of climate change through developing and implementing environmentally friendly, zero carbon, turn-key solar power solutions. That Flash has taken this important step to address its carbon footprint, while promoting the cause on such a large scale, shows that momentum is starting to build amongst individuals and organisations, for collectively working towards a sustainable future in the country.”
In supporting the EWS-WWF Heroes of the UAE campaign, Flash hopes to help drive awareness of climate change on a local level. Flash will be giving all concert goers a specially made wristband featuring the campaign’s website address. In addition posters and banners will also be prominent across the venue and volunteers, kitted in campaign T-shirts, will be giving advice and information to revellers about how they can make a difference. Short films on the Earth Hour initiative and the EWS-WWF campaign will also be screened prior to the gig. A special announcement will also be made on Earth Hour at 8.30pm on the night of the show.
Speaking on behalf of the WWF, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director EWS – WWF stated; “Earth Hour is a powerful symbol of what can be achieved through individual action on a global scale, with the whole world coming together in a response to tackle climate change. In the UAE we are keen to grasp the momentum generated by this global occasion, urging everyone to make the switch for one symbolic hour, thus taking affirmative action towards helping save our planet.”
“If Earth Hour is seen as the global community responding to climate change, residents of the UAE can pledge to make an ongoing lasting difference by joining the Heroes of the UAE campaign at www.heroesoftheuae.ae. To create a sustainable environment for future generations, people need to show they care every day by taking simple action, and following the campaign’s energy saving tips. As a vital first step let’s join together as part of a global community to show our support for Earth Hour,” she added.
The one-off Abu Dhabi gig from Coldplay, organised by Flash and Live Nation, will be the band’s only stop in the Middle East as part of the world tour for their critically acclaimed fourth album; ‘Viva La Vida’, which has secured no less than seven nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards and has been the number-one selling album globally in 36 countries.

Abu Dhabi // Saturday’s Coldplay concert will be carbon neutral, with organisers helping to fund a wind farm in New Zealand to offset all energy consumed in putting on the event.
The show is being held at the Emirates Palace hotel on the same night as Earth Hour, when lights will be turned off in buildings around the world, including the UAE, to promote energy conservation.
The organisers estimate that the show will generate around 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Because of the practical difficulty of pulling the plug on a stadium full of people during a concert, the promoters will buy wind farm energy credits to show their support.
In addition there will be recycling bins on site, an Earth Hour video will be shown before the band come on stage and leaflets will be handed out to those attending.
The organisers, Flash, announced the carbon-offsetting programme yesterday. It is funded by Enviromena Power Systems, based in Abu Dhabi, with support from the World Wildlife Fund.
“We can’t switch off the power because of health and safety issues,” said John Lickrish, the managing director of Flash. “But what we can do is reach out to the people in the community and speak to them directly. What we will do is to offset all the energy consumption, for example from the people travelling to the event and the band who are departing. We will then purchase gold credits.”
These credits are a part of a carefully audited offsetting scheme.
Enviromena compiled a detailed estimate of the emissions the event is likely to cause. The 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide include the amounts generated by flying an entourage of 40 people from Hong Kong and on to London, by the amplifiers and lighting rigs, by the cars of the estimated 15,000 people attending the show and by the waste created.
“At the end of that, you come up with a carbon number and that is offset by investment in projects such as the wind farm one we are investing in with the project in New Zealand,” said Sami Khoreibi, the president of Enviromena Power Systems, who are doing a deal with the UK-based Carbon Neutral Company to fund the wind farm.
Elsewhere, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai will darken during Earth Hour hour, along with other buildings across the country. The UAE’s climate means a lot of energy is used in air conditioning, making it difficult for the country to shed its wasteful reputation. “You are dealing with very difficult climate conditions here, this is one of the problems,” Mr Lickrish said. “We can do our little bit at events, but really for us it’s about driving awareness and saying, ‘Guys, it’s not that difficult.’”
Coldplay themselves had yet to confirm their support in this scheme, he said.

Chris Martin performs during a concert in Singapore as part of Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' tour, on March 23, 2009.
ABU DHABI // Coldplay’s last album was inspired by the sights and sounds of South America, but the next will draw on the Middle East’s rich cultural heritage.
Speaking yesterday, ahead of this weekend’s eagerly awaited concert at the Emirates Palace hotel, the British band’s lead singer Chris Martin described the visit to Abu Dhabi as part of a musical odyssey that typified Coldplay’s spirit.
Huge international acclaim has taken the band to countries as far apart as the US, New Zealand and Singapore. But Martin said he was looking beyond a single live appearance, the only date in the Gulf on an extensive world tour. Instead, he sees the Middle East as “uncharted territory”, a region that promises the band an element of mystical excitement that will prove a creative force in their musical development.
“Musicians are hungry for freshness,” he said. “Somewhere like Abu Dhabi sounds unknown, exotic and exciting. In the same way, we’d still like to go to places like China or Russia.”
In pursuit of his artistic dream, Martin plans to bring the band back at the end of the tour to record some demos of new material.
The journey may well begin in Damascus. “Something in my brain tells me that some good music is going to happen there,” he said. “We need to start recording somewhere hot to give the music a different feel. It’s about time for us to make the change.”
Among the highlights identified by Martin from the current Viva La Vida tour have been a free concert for the UK charity War Child and a performance in New York’s Madison Square Garden. But he said that he “can’t wait” to come to the region this week.
Interviewed by The National before a show in Singapore, he said: “I’ve kept the Middle East as the last place in the world as I feel like it’s going to be important. It’s nice to save somewhere.”
One source of this inspiration may be his admiration for the US-based band The Brothers of Baladi, whose repertoire includes songs in Arabic and Turkish, with accompaniment on such traditional Middle Eastern instruments as the oud.
Back in the UK, Martin said, the band’s friends and family were envious of their trip to the UAE as the latest addition to their world travels.
Coldplay’s disparate search for influences took them to Liverpool during the preparation of their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000. As the home of the Beatles, one of the bands cited as contributing to the evolution of Coldplay’s diverse style, the city was a logical choice.
The band’s exceptional success has since taken them to the US and more recently South America.
But if Martin, 32, is beyond doubt a superstar, he displays a degree of modesty rarely encountered at his level of fame, and declares it a privilege to have the opportunity to travel so widely.
Viva la Vida is topping album charts around the world and helped Coldplay collect three Grammy Awards at the ceremony in January, including song of the year for the title track. The band’s record sales are estimated at around 30 million albums.
“At the end of the day, we’re just trying to make people have as much fun as possible on an evening when they could choose 87 other things to do,” said Martin. “This gig isn’t about expansion, but about coming to say hi.”
At Coldplay’s own Camden recording studio in London, there is a list of 12 “rules”; on tour, however, there are none, the singer says.
Although Martin is the indisputable voice of the band, he has recently decreed that there should be “less Chris Martin” in Coldplay’s music and more collaborations – building on a recent partnership with the rap singer Kanye West – and vocal contributions from other band members. Martin described his aim as to offer “as many voices as possible”.
Fans, in time, needed more diversity, Martin said. He discourages the view that it has been his unique sound that has been the root of Coldplay’s phenomenal success. “We also agreed that anything the lead singer doesn’t want to sing, he doesn’t sing.”
Coldplay admirers are unlikely to be disappointed with Saturday night’s 15,000-capacity show. The band are bringing hi-tech video spheres, multimillion dollar lighting and audio technology systems characterised by Martin as “more of a show than a concert”.
Each concert on their world tour, he said, had offered something different, keeping each performance fresh and unique. “It’s like being in a play. We’re trying to make a story to it. There are certain tricks we’ve come up with for this tour which we’ve always wanted to do. We’re trying things we haven’t done before.”
Coldplay are being supported by the US alternative rock band Mercury Rev, another group Martin admires. “We can always learn from each other when we tour with people you respect so much and these guys have so many pearls of wisdom. We’re having a lot of fun.”
Saturday’s concert will be carbon neutral to mark Earth Hour Day, an event funded by Enviromena Power Systems, based in Abu Dhabi, with support from the World Wildlife Fund. Organisers are helping to fund a wind farm in New Zealand to offset all energy consumed in putting on the event.
At 8.30pm that night lights will be turned off for an hour in buildings around the world, including the UAE, to promote energy conservation. The organisers estimate that the show will generate around 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Because of the practical difficulty of pulling the plug on a stadium full of people during a concert, the promoters will buy wind farm energy credits to show their support.
After Saturday’s Abu Dhabi date the band will be moving on to the US, Canada and Europe.

Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland chatted to us from a hotel room in Singapore last week before flying in for the Abu Dhabi show. Here’s what he had to say…
http://www.timeoutdubai.com/images/content/coldplay_interview/innerbig/coldplay_1_innerbig.jpg
Did you specifically request a gig in the Middle East?
Well we always try to play somewhere new when we’re on tour. We’ve wanted to come to the Middle East for a while as we’ve never been before. We’ve also never been to Africa or India either so there are quite a few places we are looking to go some day.
There was a rumour doing the rounds that you’d record the Abu Dhabi gig to give to fans who attended. True?
No [Laughs]. We are trying to do a live album but it’s not ready yet. It’s made up of different stuff from the last few years.
There was also talk of a quick follow up to Viva La Vida. Is that still on the cards?
No [more laughter]. We ended up doing much more touring than we originally planned so there’s no time to do proper justice to a new project. And anyway people may need a bit of a break from us!
What’s it like sharing producer Brian Eno with U2?
He also does so many other things that it’s hard to get five minutes with him. I think his influence was felt partially on our sounds - he played some keyboards and guitars on the record. But really it was his guidance on the song writing and arranging process that expanded our horizons and influences.
Did he give you a sneak preview of the new U2 album?
We tried not to as it’s more exciting to go out and buy the finished thing. I have heard it now and I think it’s great.
You’re often compared to them. Is that fair?
Well they want to be a great band and so do we - it’s as simple as that. There are a lot of similarities between us but they aren’t our only influence.
Who’s the next biggest band in the world?
I think the Kings of Leon are really huge in a lot of places - they could keep going forever. The Rolling Stones are still amazing, and The Beatles, if they ever reformed, would be the biggest band ever.
That’s not really likely though is it?
[Laughs] I guess not.
Do other big acts ever intimidate you?
Of course. When we first supported U2 in Ireland, we were just completely blown away by how good they were. It’s intimidating and inspiring at the same time.
What was the last thing that really impressed you?
There was this band called Naturally 7 - these seven guys who do everything by vocals alone. They came into our studio and started singing and it was incredible. The song was called ‘I built this wall’ or something like that. You should check it out on Youtube – it’s just brilliant.
Is social commentary really important for rock bands?
I think it’s important as a human; it’s not solely confined to musicians. Dentists and builders care just as much as we do. We just get asked about it more often than they do.
Do you all feel strongly about speaking out?
Yes we do. Chris has done a lot more, but then he talks a lot more than the rest of us! But yes we are all equally committed.
Speaking of Chris, do you like the fact that he gets all the tabloid attention while you get left alone?
Yeah, I don’t even think about it. I’m very happy with the way things are. There are definitely worse jobs.
Any surprises planned for the gig?
We like to move around a lot – especially out into the audience. These are big gigs and people can be quite far away from the stage so we like to pop up in unexpected places.
On a high wire over the crowd like true rock gods?
Perhaps not to that extent – we’re not The Darkness!
Fireworks?
We are not the AC/DC explosion type band to be honest - though we do have these amazing balls [Laughs] - light balls - and there’s a lot of energy on stage.
What happens after the tour?
We’re taking a little break and let’s see where we get after that. We’ve got a lot of ideas but we want to find a new way to go and that may take some time.
Tell us about the 19th century military uniform style you’re rocking at the moment?
Guy came up with the direction. Then we all got together in our studio to work on the outfits. We got this guy who helped us make the jackets and trousers.
[B]You really made them yourselves?
Absolutely! We really wanted this whole album to be homemade again, we wanted to take it back and have it all come from us.
Have you apologised to Paul McCartney for twisting the St Pepper look?
We saw him at the Grammy’s, and Will said ‘Thanks for the idea’.
What’s it like hanging out with a Beatle?
Well you know we’re not quite equals, but he is a very genuine and lovely person. It’s great when you meet somebody like that and they turn out to be really nice.

I'm going tomorrow night and I've just found out I can go to Parc des Princes in September! It's my first Cold play concert so I'm really excited.
Just about what other people were saying, Emirates Palace is one of the nicest venues around the UAE. It's landscaped into a sort of amphitheater and it's all grassed over, unlike where they make us go in Dubai now for concerts. The hotel is amazing but you don't go anywhere near it to enter the concert. The Justin Timberlake concert was one of my favourites in December '07.
The only thing is, most of the concerts are really toned down when they get here, and a lot of the sets and props can't be brought into the country. It will be interesting to see how much of it they bring with them.
IMGOING IMGOING because i live here..oh and ad is NOT a country..

We head into Dubai after a nine hour flight. After a couple of hours in a van, we arrive at easily the most insane hotel I have ever stayed in. The Emirates Palace. I remark that my first touring days were spent staying in Travelodges, three to a room (and the guitarist drove the van...). How things have changed...
http://www.3rb100.net/2009/3rb100_7IXXJAYKw1.jpg
We have a day off before our show here. I think at first that this is to allow us to recover from the travel and adjust to the time difference. It would appear though, that it's simply to allow us the time required to walk from our rooms to the breakfast table. In the envelope with the room key is a map of the hotel, which rather than a gimmick is a complete necessity. This place is utterly bonkers. It's all impossibly long marble corridors, fountains, gold leaf detail and chandeliers the size of small villages.
It will sound perhaps a little ungracious of me, but places like this never really work for me. The inner grimy-transit-van roadie always comes to the surface and sneers. Such explicit wealth always turns me off and makes me feel out of place. I can't work out whether this is the most incredible place I've ever been, or just a huge Arabian Hard-Rock-Cafe.
As ever, it's all about the gig. In nine hours we'll know. It'd be nice to be proven a grumpy old man and end this leg on a blinder of a show in a stunning setting. Let's see.
http://www.3rb100.net/2009/3rb100_OpMaULVoiJ.jpg
http://www.3rb100.net/2009/3rb100_6DoC5WfPW.jpg
In the meantime, Lobby Call is in two hours. Given that the lobby is the size of a bleeding football stadium (complete with art gallery, photography exhibition, endless bars and restaurants and its own shopping mall...) I'd probably best set off now....

Icons plunge into darkness to shed light on planet
Dubai/Abu Dhabi: Iconic landmarks across the UAE dimmed their lights for one hour on Saturday evening as part of the World Wide Fund for Nature's (WWF) global Earth Hour initiative.
Government departments, local businesses and hotels were plunged into darkness in Dubai between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
Dubai International Airport switched off lighting at all its duty free stores across its three terminals while travellers ate in food courts lit by candlelight. Lights at the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world, were also switched off as part of the initiative.
Hundreds of people gathered at The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence, the focal point of Dubai's participation in the event, to watch some of the city's most famous landmarks, including the Burj Al Arab, dim their lights.
Residents received T-shirts, caps and lanterns upon arrival. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) switched off lights at The Walk as well as at all commercial advertising spots on Jumeirah and Sufouh roads.
Thousands of people attending the Coldplay concert in Abu Dhabi, were shown a short film on Earth Hour before the gig started.
All carbon emissions generated as a result of the concert are to be calculated to generate the event's total carbon footprint. Based on the total figure, 'carbon credits' will fund an international gold standard certified sustainability project.
Abu Dhabi Police participated in the Earth Hour by switching off lights at its main premises and dimming lighting in other departments. Warning and security systems continued to work normally.
Major General Ahmad Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police, said the move has not affected emergency systems as light was reduced at the departments whose work is round-the-clock.
Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi participated by turning its lobby lights off. Hundreds of guests and visitors were gathered at the lobby, surrounded by candlelights.
The Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah switched off lights in the garden and in corridors and offices for one hour, conserving 1,600 kilowatts of electricity.
Over 1,800 cities in more than 80 countries pledged their support to Earth Hour 2009 with some of the world's landmarks plunging into darkness, including Sydney Harbour Bridge, Edinburgh Castle and the Pyramids.

It was so good. The lightning and pelting rain made it even better. The setlist was the same as Singapore I believe but they played some nursery rhymes about rain while we stood there drebched. Chris apologgized for his 'shit arabic'. The sound went out after yellow on stage left and was recovered a couple songs later. Guy's guitar thing didn't work when they played at trhe end of the runway. A girl called Sarah who was my friend

I can't type on a BB my life. Sarah went on stage because it was her birthday and the hardest part was dedicated to her. Will type more when I get back to my IMac. Stupid BB and EDGE. The concert was sponsered by DU who provides cellphone service and what happens? No cell service! What the hell is the point of learning TwitterBerry and TwitPic. Whatever, Parc des Princes 7eme Septembre. Maybe the french and Orange have better coverage.

ABU DHABI // The British rock band Coldplay made their Middle East debut last night in a musical performance to a capacity crowd of 15,000 on the Emirates Palace hotel grounds.
http://www.thenational.ae/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?Site=AD&Date=20090329&Category=NATIONAL&ArtNo=47335634&Ref=AR&Profile=1001&MaxW=300
The critically acclaimed group began their set with Violet Hill, followed by hits including Yellow and Clocks. Chris Martin, the lead singer, greeted fans in Arabic and laughed off several downpours with impromptu renditions of Singin’ in the Rain and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.
“Even this torrential weather couldn’t stop us having a great time with you,” he told the crowd, who ignored the thunder and lightning to carry on dancing and cheering.
Sarah Foster, a Canadian, said: “He’s turned the rain into an amazing atmosphere. If anything it’s like a treat for us here.”
Philip Parks, also from Canada, said: “It’s the best concert I’ve been to here. The rain just made it better. Amazing atmosphere.”
Laura Nightingale, 27, from the UK, who is on holiday with her fiance, said the concert was the highlight of her trip. “This is an amazing treat,” she said. “I love the ‘show must go on’ attitude.”
A fan who turned 24 yesterday was invited to join Martin at the piano to turn the pages of his score as he played The Hardest Part.
Coldplay were supported by the US rock band Mercury Rev, who have been on the American music scene for more than 20 years and whom Martin cites as an inspiration for his musical career.
The band played three encores, the first of which, an acoustic set including the Monkees’ classic I'm A Believer, they performed on a second stage near fans in the standing section. The crowd turned on their mobile phones’ lights while all other lighting in the stadium was turned off to mark Earth Hour.
The concert – a joint venture between Flash and Live Nation – was “carbon neutral”.

Viva La Coldplay
ABU DHABI - Fans flocked to Abu Dhabi’s Emirate Palace hotel last night to see pop-rock heavy weights Coldplay live in concert.
The band, whose album Viva la Vida was last year’s best selling album worldwide, dropped by the nation’s capital for the last show of their world tour.
“Coldplay rock. I saw them four years ago and they were really good then. I’m expecting Chris Martin to be a dancing freak,” said Lucy Medial, a fashion consultant from Dubai.
“He isn’t sexy but he’s an amazing artist. I like that he is a green advocate and his fashion style is a bit dirty-chic.”
Coldplay aficionados came from across the country and even the region with Karin Aboujaoute, a student, travelling from Beirut, Lebanon. “I love Coldplay. Their songs are incredible and I’ve come all the way from Beirut to see them and I’ve bought a Coldplay hat,” Karin said.
“I want to hear some old songs like Clocks, Yellow and The Scientist — not just tunes from Viva la Vida.”
Lezanne Swart, a gothic designer from South Africa, wasn’t put off by drizzling rain or lightening streaking across the sky minutes before the band began playing.
“I know the words to all Coldplay songs. I love them. They are just really original and keep coming up with great albums,” Swart said. “I think Chris Martin is a good artist and I like that they support free trade. He and Gwyneth Paltrow make a good couple and I’m hoping they play a little bit of everything tonight. Viva la Vida or Death and All his Friends is probably my favourite album.”
The four-piece came on stage brandishing sparklers and opened with their latest single Life in Technicolor taken from Viva la Vida. (See the full report in City Times on Monday).

Coldplay played at the outdoor Emirates Palace Hotel venue in the pouring rain this evening as their Middle Eastern Viva La Vida tour came to a dripping wet conclusion in the United Arab Emirates. Apart from the odd lighting strike and a sodden crowd, the show went ahead as planned.

http://www.timeoutdubai.com/images/content/abu_dhabi_weekend/innerbig/coldplays_1_innerbig.jpg
On paper, the weekend was a triumph before it had even started - two of the world’s biggest acts playing back-to-back in the UAE capital, attracting thousands of fans from across the Emirates.
The weekend got off to a bumpy start. The wind whipped up a minor sandstorm in the dusty carpark at Emirates Palace and dumped its contents all over the bemused guests, many of whom had turned up in their opera finest. When the announcement came that the maestro would be onstage late, minor sandstorm threatened to turn into minor mutiny.
Andrea Bocelli is an odd tin of sardines. Like a classical Robbie Williams, you get the feeling he’d like to be a lot grander than he actually is. Certainly, he can cough up a better Rigoletto than you or I, and lesser men would blush at those high notes, but – as he proved in the second half on Friday night – his voice is better suited to Italian easy listening, or the Lloyd-Weber-esque ‘Time to Say Goodbye’, rather than the assault on opera’s greatest arias that he staged in the first.
For his final trick, he dribbled ‘Nessum Dorma’ down the centre of the park, showing occasional flair, before knocking a well-intended effort someway off target. Old twinkle-toes Pavarotti, should you need reminding, finished a similar move in considered style some twenty years earlier. Ending your gig with a weak version of someone else’s signature piece is, perhaps, not the best idea. Admitting that you haven’t bothered to learn any Arabic, despite your astronomical fee, smacks of arrogance.
No such language difficulties with Coldplay, whose eager-to-please front man Chris Martin must have swallowed a local dictionary. Once again, the elements voiced their disapproval in spectacular fashion – the primordial stew that had been brewing throughout Saturday finally giving way to a vast and furious electrical storm an hour before show time. It paused briefly to allow Mercury Rev their chance to mimic Flaming Lips, beginning again with renewed vigour during the headliners’ mesmeric rendition of smash hit ‘Yellow’. Never have 15,000 people looked so happy in the rain. Love him or hate him, Martin is a compelling frontman, and the unassuming young Brit managed to summon forth a devilish alter ego, pulling the gig back from the brink of being a literal washout.
If it hadn’t been for the large balls of water seemingly hurled from the sky, we’d have taken our hats off to Coldplay. On and on they played, interspersing their hit-ridden set with a cheery rendition of ‘Singing in the Rain’; amazed and delighted to be a part of the atmospheric irony. The occasion marked a triumphant close to both their world tour and one of the most surreal Abu Dhabi weekends in living memory.

Top performance by Cold Play in the grounds of the 7 star Emirates Palace last night. Dug the surreal lightening display that went on throughout the gig. Guess it was Gods way of saying, ‘Stuff Earth Hour I don’t turn my lights off for no one.’ Unfortunately with the lightening came rain. I don’t mind rain at an outdoor gig especially in the Middle East because it’s warm rain. It’s warm like the water the hairdresser uses to wash your hair. You know how they hold the little nozzle under their hand till the temp is just perfect and then they start washing? In the Middle East the rain god does the same thing before he dumps a deluge on you. Millions of little drops of urine temperature water plopping down on you. Back in the 90’s at the one-day cricket at Eden Park, before they banned booze sales in the second innings, you did used to feel the same thing, except it was drops of urine falling out of the sky. Well, out of the cups of the guy’s 12 rows back.
No, I don’t mind rain but some people do. They mind it so much in fact that they would rather wear rubbish bags than get wet. Who started that retarded trend? Which genius decided to cut holes for arms and head and throw on a plastic bag? Probably a pissed guy who was trying to dress up as a homeless guy for a joke. But it caught on! Do concert goers read the weather report and think ‘Might be chance of rain. Better put a giant rubbish bag in my pocket? The Cold Play concert was carbon neutral apparently. I guess the thousands of rubbish bags on their way to the landfill today don’t count.
Great gig from a top band but the sound seemed a bit crap for a while. There was this staticky hiss in the air. Then I realized it was the sound of hundreds of rubbish bag wearing plonkers rustling in time to the songs.

Abu Dhabi: The atmosphere was electric, alright.
With thousand-volt lightning streaking across the sombre skies, a group of four took to the stage in their marching band outfits to sing about Violet Hill, with Eugene Delacroix’s symbolist painting: Liberty Leading the People, unfolding in the background.
The heavy skies soon opened up pouring rain over the 15,000 fans who had come to see Coldplay in their first concert in the UAE on Saturday [March 28] at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.
The rain, the thunder and the lightning combined with the blue-green laser lights and humongous balloons wading through the air to create a surreal backdrop.
On the last leg of their world tour to promote their fourth album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, Coldplay belted out hits such as Yellow, The Scientist, Fix You, Clocks and In My Place from their previous three albums, alongside other tracks like Green Eyes, Shiver and The Hardest Part.
From their latest album, the obvious favourite was cover song Viva La Vida with the crowds joining in the chorus as lead vocalist Chris Martin swaggered around the stage and across the protruding ramp which divided the VIP stands into two, bringing Coldplay closer to fans who were at the back.
Martin couldn’t help joking about seeing rain in a ‘desert country’.
Coldplay also showcased new tracks such as Lost, 42 and Lovers of Japan, which was played against a rolled-down backdrop video of Japan. As the crowd began applauding, Martin sprung out a Wagasa (a Japanese parasol) and broke into a frenzied dance before the crowds were showered with thousands of little paper butterflies; just like in the video.
Sixteen year old Samar who was having the time of his life, said, “We felt like we were floating in the air while listening to them. Coldplay makes you forget about all your problems; they take you into another world…”
An old-school wooden-framed television placed next to the piano on stage was beaming live images from the concert and clips from their music videos.
As the rains died down and a cool wind wafted over the concert-venue, Coldplay mimicked the weather with their romantic guitar riffs and vibrating drum sounds.
The musicians constantly interacted with their fans and also went on to say that the Abu Dhabi crowd ranked as their number one to date.
A lucky birthday girl got to go on stage and join Martin on the keyboards for a solo performance of the song ‘The Hardest Part’
Since Earth Hour 2009 also coincided with their concert, the band who are known to be environmentally-friendly, requested the organisers to switch off all lights in the arena for five minutes to commemorate the event. A multitude of cellphone lights lit up the arena, the musicians went on to do a cover of Neil Diamond’s I’m a Believer.
Scott Hallsworth, a British expatriate, who had braved the rains with his wife and infant baby in a stroller, to watch the band perform, said, “I’ve attended Coldplay’s concert in London, but this one was much better than that. Coldplay is famous for their brilliant stage productions and they stayed true to form. The weather did not bother us; it actually complemented the atmosphere of the concert,” he said.
Martin then joked about the early formation of the band, and made drummer and backing vocalist Will Champion perform, to prove that the band would not have been the same, had he been the lead vocalist – all in good humour.
As the curtains came down, the band bowed out in front of a roaring audience with a humble ‘Shukran’. However, the crowds were not in the mood to call it a night.
As Coldplay retired backstage, the thousands of fans began to hum Viva La Vida – an unusual way to urge the band to come back on stage as compared to the usual ‘once more’.
Despite a few minutes passing by and no sign of Coldplay, the crowds continued singing hoping that the band would come back on stage one last time.
And they did…........

A navy hoody pulled up over his blonde curls, trying his best to go undetected, Coldplay's Chris Martin mooched across a half-built arena ahead of the UK band's first concert in the Middle East.
Barefoot and boardshort-clad, the world famous frontman oozed calmth, in direct contrast to the 100-strong work force beavering away to get Emirates Palace ready for the 15,000 hungry fans due to descend on the venue in a matter of hours. The concert, the final stop on Coldplay's Viva La Vida world tour, was timed perfectly to coincide with the globally-marked environmental initiative Earth Hour, something close to the band's hearts, as they explained to tabloid! just hours before the concert.
"When we support something, we prefer to support it whole-heartedly and not just put our name on the can," said drummer Will Champion.
"It's not good to spread yourself too thin, especially when it comes to things which require so much effort and energy to get right. We all made a pact a long time ago we would never put our faces to campaigns unless we truly believed we had the time to really make people believe in them too."
Despite Coldplay's worldwide popularity, the band has remained protective of their music, refusing its use for product endorsements. "We are lucky enough to have a platform where people actually listen to us and it's important to us we use it correctly and to the benefit of the rest of the world," continued Champion. "We agreed we would use the platform to do some good in the world and make people aware of things which could help the planet instead of just doing something to make us more money."
As lead guitarist Jonny Buckland and Martin continued a sound check, bass guitarist Guy Berryman explained why the band are so environmentally-conscious. "It's all about the world really, isn't it?" he said with a look of sincerity. "Don't get me wrong, these concerts do use a lot of energy but that comes with the territory. But we try and be as environmentally aware and kind as we can be - our album covers are printed on recycled paper and for every 100 made we plant trees around the world. Every little bit helps, as the people at Tesco so rightly keep telling us," he said with a wink and a smile.
Active supporters of various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International, the guys said they were "stoked" the concert organisers had agreed to make their concert the first carbon-offset event in the Middle East. "It's really important to us, and it's also good people understand and are educated about the damage our own carbon footprint can do to the world we live in," Champion said.
Opening with one of their more recent singles, Violet Hill, Martin quickly won over his audience with lively banter, peppered with a few greetings in Arabic. "Four boys, with slightly more hair and a fair bit thinner, decided to practice for 12 years and then go and play a concert in Abu Dhabi in the rain," Martin said as the crowd went wild. "We've finally made it here and we are so happy. Our goal has been realised."
Making it to the Middle East was something Champion said the band had always strived for. With family currently living in Dubai, he said he was looking forward to his father coming to the gig. "We never imagined we'd ever make it and be able to play in a place like the UAE," he said. "If you'd asked me 10 years ago, I don't think I ever would have believed we'd be here today. It is an honour and we are so happy to be here in the Middle East."
Champion's father may have been in the crowd, but this time his wife and young children couldn't be here - something the guys say they always find hard when on tour. "Touring is fun, but it can be a challenge too. You miss family and friends and you also miss being in the studio.
"It's weird actually, but when you're on tour you just want to be at home and when you're at home all you can think about is getting back on the road again," said Berryman. "Tour life has certainly changed for us mainly due to the fact we are all fathers now," added Champion with a smile. "We all have babies and youngsters and that just changes everything. Chris's eldest is five and mine is three - they are just starting to really understand what Daddy does and it's so incredible to see them grow and learn. Songs come on the radio and you watch them recognise the tunes and look up at you. I'm sure they'll be a few opinions which will start to shine through very soon which will be interesting. My little one came to her first concert in Australia and she really enjoyed it. It was very special for me. The wives and kids are often around depending on the tour dates and locations. They come and go as they please, which is nice."
With three single show dates to end the tour in Hong Kong, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, Coldplay has also recently spent time playing in Australia to raise money for the victims of the recent bushfires. "Australia was a slightly different kettle of fish because we were there for something so special," said Champion. "It was wonderful to be asked to play the victims of the bushfires and meant so much to all of us. Chris actually had the chance to get out to the area where some of the fire hit and said it was so moving."
But their UAE concert was to support another cause - Earth Hour, which encourages people across the globe to switch off unnecessary lights and electricity for one hour to raise awareness about - and counteract the effects of - climate change. Martin ordered the lights to be switched off while the band played an acoustic set amid a mass of mobile phone lights only.
This year's Earth Hour aims to encourage one billion "vote earth" votes and make a difference - something Martin says starts with each individual. A show full of surprises with everything from giant, spinning globes suspended from a rig or paper butterflies blasted into the air, to yellow balloons thrown into the crowd during their hit song Yellow - the performance kept everyone guessing - something Berryman warned us about earlier that day."We wrote, designed and planned the whole show from start to finish so everything you saw up there was all us," he said. "It took us about four weeks to design and then about four weeks to really perfect the show while we were on tour in America. We tweaked bits and pieces and then to be honest it hasn't changed at all since then. It's perfect."
Berryman said the show was even more special here for a few other reasons. "The concert here is the very first show of the tour we have done outdoors which makes it very fresh and exciting for us. Different scenery and the fresh air - we just have to pray the rain holds off."
Clearly nobody was looking down on the guys as the heavens opened and the lightning provided a dramatic backdrop to the set. But somehow the weather added to the electric atmosphere, the audience and band pulling together in the face of adversity. "I can't believe it's raining in a country where it rains once every 10 years," shouted Martin. "But stick with us and we'll make it through together guys."
And he made it worth their while, effortlessly weaving in humorous tunes such as Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and Rain, Rain Go Away into the band's famous hits, including Fix You and Clocks.
Out on the town
Guy Berryman told tabloid! that one of the downsides of touring was that they didn't get to see much of the cities they were visiting. "With Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE in a week you basically just give up on time zones. You cross so many you just sleep when you're tired and stay awake when you're not. It's crazy, but lots of fun too. The bad thing is we don't get to see much of the place we are in."
But tabloid! spies tell us that they were able to squeeze in a night at Emirates Palace's Etoiles nightclub, following the Andrea Bocelli concert on Friday. They were also spotted handing out free tickets to a few lucky people they met that night.

A truly storming show for Coldplay
http://www.thenational.ae/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?Site=AD&Date=20090330&Category=ART&ArtNo=68134612&Ref=AR&Profile=1007&MaxW=300
The Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was charmingly apologetic, as if the rain was his fault. “I know this is extremely terrible weather,” he bellowed from the Emirates Palace stage on Saturday night.
But in fact, the rain never mattered. The British foursome bounced on stage with sparklers, opening their storming Middle Eastern debut with the instrumental Life in Technicolor from their last album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, followed by Violet Hill from the same album. From the happy enthusiasm shown by the band, you would never have guessed it’s a show that they’ve already performed more than 100 times worldwide. As forks of lightening streaked the sky, a sodden, enraptured audience of 15,000 whooped back at them.
Musically, it was a strong, well-constructed set list of upbeat new tracks from the recent album, produced in part by Brian Eno, along with a smattering of oldies. Having worked their way through Clocks and In My Place, it was during a rendition of the band’s early hit Yellow that the rain really started coming down. Martin looked disbelievingly skywards and laughed with his three band mates, the guitarist Jonny Buckland, the bassist Guy Berryman and the drummer Will Champion. “I’m singing in the rain,” he quipped. Three giant orbs twirled above their heads, yellow balloons floated across the stage and a backdrop of multicoloured laser beams shone out into the audience.
It wasn’t a mere visual spectacle, however. From start to finish of nearly two hours of music, it was a magnificent effort in which the crowd were given a true taste of Chris Martin, the entertainer. He didn’t just sing. He also played the guitar, tinkled on the piano, cracked jokes at the audience and apologised for his bad Arabic before, at one moment, swaying around while puffing into a harmonica. All of this while skipping around stage, sweat pouring down his face. “We’re staying in a palace,” he said incredulously while waving his hand at the hotel behind him, seeming genuinely grateful to be there.
As he launched into a soaring rendition of Fix You, the rain stopped and the crowd were encouraged to sing along. Martin flung his Sergeant Pepper jacket out into the audience before launching into the opening guitar chords of Strawberry Swing, an Afropop influenced track that Martin attributes to Zimbabwe, where his mother grew up. “It’s such a perfect day,” he sang as the crowd collectively wiped rain water from their eyes.
The highlight, for one girl, came when Martin called her up on stage for a birthday treat. Having moved to a platform in front of the stage while frantic bodies mopped the equipment behind him, Martin invited the 23-year-old Sarah to sit beside him while he played the piano through The Hardest Part. “Just turn the pages,” he said. “I probably don’t smell so good but just sit back and relax. I’ll do all the singing.”
For others in the audience, their moment came when the four moved to a small platform in the middle of the standing section. “Remember, it’s Earth Hour,” instructed Martin as the lights went off and a sea of mobile phones and cameras were held up instead while the four swept through The Monkees’ I’m A Believer. Champion left his drums and took over for Martin with a rare vocal performance of Death Will Never Conquer, a song penned during writing sessions for Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends but which never made it on to the album.
The evening’s pinnacle came just afterwards, when having moved back to the main stage and performed Politik, the band struck up their wistful anthem to the East, Lovers in Japan. To a screened backdrop of Japanese images, thousands of multicoloured paper butterflies showered down on the audience. It was a truly breathtaking moment.
Tricky, therefore, to follow it up, but this they did with aplomb, performing the lullaby-like Death and All His Friends before taking a bow and leaving the stage. A brief encore, including The Scientist, was swept through before Martin had one final parting shot for the grateful crowd. “The ratings are back,” he said, “And we’ve played a few gigs, but the Abu Dhabi is audience number one.” On such a night, we happily believed him.

March 29, 2009
Driving to Abu Dhabi on Saturday night to watch Coldplay perform, the roads were wet, huge clouds loomed in the distance and lightning lit up the sky. What were we doing going to an outdoor concert? For any other band it may have been a different story, but this was Coldplay and so there was no turning back. It was a seriously moody night, but entering the Abu Dhabi city the rain cleared and we breathed a sigh of relief.
The venue was packed and a sea of excited faces waited for Coldplay to get up on stage. The Brit band opened with ‘Clocks’, an old favourite that got the crowd roaring. Frontman Chris Martin was sat on the piano playing that distinctive piano riff to a mass of screaming fans.
Minutes later the inevitable happened, the heavens opened and it rained but, to our amazement, the crowds didn’t run for cover. There was an electric feeling in the air and people screamed, cheered and danced through the rain. The band followed shortly after with ‘Yellow’, another great nostalgic song.
Chris Martin was as charismatic as ever on the night, he stopped between songs to have a little banter with crowd and even managed the odd Arabic word.
Highlights of the night included; a performance in the dark for Earth Hour – fans were asked to light up the stage with their mobile phones and everywhere you turned all you could see was a multitude of blinking lights. A blinding performance of ‘Politik (Open Up Your Eyes)’, an entire stadium signing along to ‘Viva La Vida’ and butterfly-shaped confetti bursting into the air nearing the end of the night.
As we drove back from Abu Dhabi drenched and happily exhausted, we sighed and realized that it’s not often out here you see such an energetic crowd of people at a concert and such a stellar performance by a truly gifted band. Of course, there were the odd teeny-bopper trios insisting on pushing past you but even that couldn’t ruin the night. Coldplay were ace.

I was at the Coldplay concert last Saturday, and all I can say is WOW! What a show!
We got there early so we could secure good spots...and what amazing spots they ended up being! Chris Martin was so close, we could almost touch him!
The rain, lightning and thunder show that accompanied the band only made the whole experience even better in my opinion.
The band was incredible...they looked like they were having fun on stage, they interacted with the crowd, they improvised, and they sang their lungs out! Their rendition of "I'm a believer" was amazing, and Chris often burst out into spontaneous rain-related songs such as "Why does it always rain on me" and "Raindrops keep falling on my head".
He even invited a girl to go up on stage with him to celebrate her birthday. Lucky b*&^h :)
The venue at the Emirates Palace was perfect once again (although more traffic on the way out this time around, and it seems that the wristband section was a bit more chaotic).
Abu Dhabi has proven once again that when it comes to attracting the big names and putting on a show, it beats Dubai hands down!

As enticing as this spot has been, after we arrived on Saturday evening, Kim led us out for the Coldplay concert at Emirates Palace, the hotel that put Abu Dhabi on the map and makes the Shang look like a newer Best Western (more on that later, as we're going to explore the interior today). While the skies looked a bit threatening, no one really thought it would rain, since, as Kim told us, it rained just once for a very little while all of last year.
The concert was set near the beach to the side of the hotel, so that the stage backed to the water (though too dark for us to see) and the Palace dominated the skyline to the right. This was Coldplay's last stop on their Viva tour, and first time in the Middle East, so we saw a mix of around 15,000 fans, a rather blended international crowd.
As is the standard for this trip so far, Kim scored us--along with two of her friends--VIP tickets in the section most removed from the stage, but also the most comfortable. We were slightly elevated, which gave us a better view than those on the ground, and because the crowd was a bit smaller, the entire setting seemed rather intimate, yet still a little raucous.
I've always enjoyed listening to attractive British men do just about anything, so Chris Martin and the boys didn't disappoint. Added bonus, just as the concert got going, a lightning storm began illuminating the sky behind us. While we were excited about the additional light show, Kim and I kept commenting on the fact that the main stage, what with all the metal and wiring, was an ideal conduit for all that electrical power.
Fortunately, none of us went up in a ball of electrocuted flash, but we did get absolutely drenched when the sky unleashed pebble-sized rain drops...which inspired Chris, as I like to call him, to incorporate impromptu "rain" lyrics (think, raindrops keep falling on me head) into his songs.
At some point, the rain did let up, and we soaked in the rest of the concert, with the band really playing to the crowd (good video to come), traveling out to different spots nearer to us and entertaining us with more acoustic arrangements (and a harmonica solo).

Hi everyone I’m back and I’m sure you can already tell where I’ve been this weekend. That’s right I went to Abu Dhabi to see Coldplay play live in concert. I’m not really into concerts but Coldplay are one of the very few groups I’ve wanted to see live so I was really to glad get to good tickets, even though I thought I had left it late. All I can say is that they were FANTASTIC ! It was a memorable experience on so many levels.
We got into the outdoor venue at Emirates Palace about 20 minutes before Coldplay came on stage. The tickets were for standing near the stage (Diamond Standing) and I’m so glad I bought those tickets as the seated ones were really far away. I was looking around. The place was packed. I later found out that 15,000 people were there !
Then all of a sudden the lights went out and all you could see were torches of fire spinning around on the stage and then the opening intro from the album Viva La Vida (Life in Technicolor) being played by the band from behind a screen where you could only see their silhouettes. An electric opening.
The band then reeled off songs from the album with classics such as Yellow, In My Place and the brilliant Fix You in between. Oh and in between the songs there was thunderstorm which completely soaked everyone. But no one cared. In fact it added to the atmosphere. With every clap of thunder we sang even louder, our hands and faces getting wetter from the warm tropical rain. Coldplay was the perfect soundtrack to this evening.
But what made this concert really memorable was the performance of lead singer Chris Martin. What a show he put on. It wasn’t just him standing up there singing the songs going through the routine. His use of Arabic, “Shukran” and “keefik” were nice touches and you got the feeling that a lot of this was being improvised. Not the songs, the interaction with the crowd, which he never missed an opportunity to do. He would bring in “raindrops keep falling on my head” in one of his songs while the rain was bucketing down. When doing a rendition of the 60’s song of “I’m a believer” he cracked a joke each time before asking different sections of the crowd and the band members if they”feel in love”.
Other great parts of the show were when celebrating Earth Hour, all the lights were turned off as Chris Martin asked everyone to light up the screens of their mobiles while he sang on a small stage in the middle of the crowd. Before that, one lucky girl who was celebrating her birthday actually got on the stage with Chris Martin where they did a “special duet” as Martin put it. Only he would sing but asked if she wouldn’t mind turning the pages of the song book on his piano. But joke of the night had to be when he said that the band has been together for 13 years but the first 12 years were just spent practicing for this concert in Abu Dhabi LOL !
Back to the music, so many good songs were performed really well but the pick were Lost, Clocks (great laser show), Viva La Vida, and of course Fix You. But what made this show (it was so much more than a concert) so refreshing was that the biggest band in the world right now are really down to earth ordinary guys who play great music, fantastic songs and always engaged the audience.
I arrived at the concert liking Coldplay. I left, absolutely loving them.

We saw Coldplay on Saturday night outside on the grounds of the Emirates Palace. It was a pretty good concert with the band coming out to the cheap seats 'standing section in the back' to play a few songs. Seemed impromptu, but most likely planned and very cool. Although I really get frustrated when the 'small' girls get on the shoulders and make it even more difficult to see, perhaps if I weighed 20 lbs less I might have been able to do that too.
All night there was lightning in the distance which made for a pretty cool atmosphere. The rain came....only a few minutes into the second song and it poured! Now of course rain can always be an issue at outdoor concerts in most countries, but here in Abu Dhabi, where rain is really quite rare, it was extremely odd. Since we got here in January, we've seen a few sandstorms, but other than that it's been clear blue sunny skies. It rained for a good half hour soaking everyone to the core, thankfully we brought along garbage bags to try and keep us dry :)

I'm going to tell you all about the VIVA COLDPLAY concert in Abu Dhabi.
Yes, Vikvik was able to get me in with the press passes Tita Victoria --Vikvik's bestfriend's mom-- has......
.....Anyway, it's a long drive from Sharjah to Gardens to Abu Dhabi. And it's effin traffic, and it started to rain. But when we arrived, the rain stopped. We got there and we stayed at the front part (since there were no seats) of the concert area. I can't believe it's cold this time of the
year. Goddamnit! I didn't bring warm clothes! I had to borrow some from my mom. And my brother and I forgot to bring jackets. Good job! So there I was trying not to feel cold and trying not to fall asleep cause I was sooo effin sleepy and tired. Cause it's taking them sooo long to start up the show and play. But it's soooo worth the wait. They were fucking great! XD Chris Martin's voice is the same on album as it is live. Oh the lights design is fantabulous! I loved their Yellow performance cause everything was yellow, and they had big yellow balloons
flying all over. And that's when it started to rain.
Here are the downsides of the concert:
1) I felt really small and my feet ache from tiptoeing cause people around me were fuckin tall! Specially the two guys who moved in front of me were fucking posts.
2) It started raining. The rain droplets were big and cold. Biting cold.
3) It didn't help that the breeze is cold.
4) I didn't finish watching the concert because I would die from hypothermia if I stayed there. But I caught the cold from 2-hour car drive back to the Gardens.

I think it has rained twice since we have lived here. Both times it was short lived, barely a glimpse of bad weather. Most days, even all through winter show blue skies and clear air. So, I could not believe the ONE night Coldplay was coming to town severe weather was forcasted..NO WAY! Well, during the day it rained a little bit and it seemed as if the weather was going to hold out.
Around 6:30pm, on our way to the concert we noticed lighting looming over the Emirates Palace Ampitheater--the exact direction we were headed. We had barely walked in the venue and the rain started..the only protection we had were the garbage bags I threw in my purse--as we have no rain coats, or even coats here and I never thought I would need them!!
Well, the rained cleared for the concert but started up again about half way through. The lightning struck throughout the night in the distance over the stage. It was a very surreal experience and a memorable one. Coldplay in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace in the background, lightning striking overhead, soaking wet clothes, beer mixed with rain water and enjoying it all with the company of great friends..who could ask for more!!!

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these fans from the swift completion of their appointed concert.
The scene outside of Saturday’s Coldplay concert at Emirates Palace is perhaps best described by reference to a ritual that, thanks to the creeping global expansion of American teen comedies, is known (and, increasingly, practised) across much of the world: prom.
The Coldplay show, like a typical prom, was long anticipated (prom comes but once a year; international pop stars come to the Emirates only ever four of five months). It involved, like prom, the gathering of a large group that otherwise would not have gathered. It encouraged unskilled dancing by low light to well-known pop songs with vaguely uplifting lyrics. This dancing was immediately preceded by a great deal of standing around by groups of young friends dressed to impress. Perhaps most promishly of all, many groups spent much preconcert energy pretending not to be snatching curious glances of other groups and their clothes.
Scores of teenaged men outside the arena were self-consciously dressed as if auditioning to be the fifth Coldplayer: ruffled hair, dark jeans neither tight nor baggy, carefully scuffed trainers, untucked button-down shirt under a hooded sweatshirt or blazer. Scores of young women were dressed the same way; others opted for skimpy skirts that surely stay in the wardrobe most school days. The doors were already open – these kids were standing outside only to be seen looking at each other standing outside (and, occasionally, smoking). Adults – a category of people defined by their inability to get fully into the correct prom mood – generally headed straight in.
In movies, the moments just before prom are typically rendered in a glistening soft-focus slow-motion. This technique presents prom as one of those personally epochal events that, once underway, seems to pass in a flash, worth approaching with senses tuned to their memory-constructing highest. As a result, personal cameras are an almost de rigueur prom accessory. Outside Emirates Palace, self-conscious group photography was rampant, just like the posting of new Facebook albums the next morning.
Nature hit all the right notes, almost as if taking direction from some prom planner in the sky; wind blew, skies darkened, and lightning forked prodigiously across the sky. Suddenly two rare events – rain and international pop spectacle – were on the menu. Were it to rain – to soak everyone’s sweatshirt, to force friends to huddle together while warbling along with Chris Martin, to produce lightning-lit pictures of same – a memorable night would be guaranteed.
The rain came, and the kids cheered. This was going to be great. Some clever person piped the Barbadian pop star Rihanna’s Umbrella (“Now that it’s raining more than ever / Know that we’ll still have each other / You can stand under my umbrella”) over the PA, and a singalong started.
Meanwhile, a steady trickle of adults left the stadium – some were heading home for rainwear, others were simply heading home. One woman about to step into a cab hesitated. Inside the car was warmth and dryness. Outside was lightning and rain, with hours to go until Coldplay. For a few seconds, she watched a dozen teenagers dancing under a blue tarp, and smiled. “But I’m not a kid anymore,” she said to no one in particular.

#42 reports on the Abu Dhabi deluge
http://coldplay.com/newsdetail.php?id=378
So, we've been home a week now. I managed on day four to move the suitcase from blocking the front door - I still haven't got round, though, to the rather dull looking pile of bills, final demands and other junk mail that's accrued during my absence.
Going from constant motion to utter stillness is obviously a treat. It also begins like many other blocks of "free time" with great intentions. Inevitably, the opportunity to rest and recover overtakes everything. I've heard the very end of a tour being described as being like "getting fired out of a cannon at a brick wall". Perhaps a little over-dramatic, but not entirely inaccurate.
Tour breaks, then, are a little less extreme, but still involve some adjustment. A better analogy for me in this case, would perhaps be that I'm on a tug of war team and the other side has just let go of the rope. A general falling in a heap and wondering what's next is unavoidable. Time to let go of the line, dust yourself off and maybe get a drink...
Some have booked holidays. Although the idea of getting on another plane and checking into another hotel doesn't immediately appeal, it is a great way to force the mind and body into relaxation quickly.
I actually find the tying up of loose ends under zero pressure quite relaxing. I guess it comes from actually enjoying what I do. Being as I carry out several roles on the tour, there's always more to do than time available, so a lot falls through the cracks. It's nice to pick up the interesting bits and play with them just for the hell of it.
To that end, I've dug out the few lines I wrote in the airport lounge in Abu Dhabi about the last show. It was certainly one that none of us there are likely to forget, documenting it therefore seems important. OK then, when I count backwards from three, you will wake up in the United Arab Emirates seven days ago. Three, two.....
It rained a little at soundcheck. Nothing torrential, just enough to let us know that it was worth being cautious in covering everything with plastic sheeting. We're hopeful that it'll be enough to keep the dust down and by showtime, we'll be back to balmy desert heat.
http://coldplay.com/uploads/ad01.jpg
http://coldplay.com/uploads/ad02.jpg
The hotel is just up the beach, so I head back up to my room in order to get my luggage ready. We're bailing for the airport as soon as the gear is packed. As I wander back down the marble corridor to the beach path, there is a huge burst of light outside the window. I first think lightning, but tell myself it was far too intense and too close - it must have been a camera flash.
I'm halfway down the beach path, when the sky explodes like god's own strobe light. The entire sky is bright neon white. The arc that shoots across my vision is so bright that when I close my eyes, it's still burnt into my retinae. I ponder the wisdom of going to climb inside the huge steel cage of the stage for the next few hours. Is it safer or less safe to be standing in a huge steel box in the middle of a desert storm?
Mercury Rev go on in the midst of the first downpour. There's a lot of anxious talk over the radios. Word is that if it's still raining like this when Coldplay being their set, the B stage and the C-stage will be cancelled and done under cover on the main-stage instead. Marguerite is reading weather forecasts direct from the laptop to the whole crew at regular intervals on channel 1.
When a tour is this far in (we passed our hundredth show recently, remember) it can be easy to fall into a routine and some nights find yourself almost too relaxed and needing to slap yourself into concentrating properly. No such trouble tonight, obviously. Today, everyone is fully alert, very deliberate in all of their actions and aware of the plethora of possibility for things to go very wrong.
At the back of everybody's minds, is the fact that we have some very big outdoor shows to do this summer. If this goes badly, the storm clouds that hang over us tonight will remain in our minds over the outdoor shows to come. We'd plainly spend three months expecting every one of those shows to be a horrible nightmare. It's important that all goes well tonight.
We're a frazzled crew that's been bounced in a game of timezone table tennis over the last six weeks. Today we're all counting down the hours until we're home. Everyone had this pegged as a nice day in the sun to break up the journey home. Not quite.
Mercury Rev suit the drama of the night perfectly. They play a blinding show, as if this is what they've always wanted for a light show. They finish up their final show with us and a grinning Bash comes over and shouts into my ear, "Fuck I'm gonna miss them". I'd say that goes for us all...
Time then, to make the show happen. It's raining steadily and Marguerite's weather reports inform us that they're confident it'll get heavier. The main questions are obviously whether the B and C stages will happen. Back here on the A stage however, things aren't exactly watertight. We're in a desert location that rarely sees heavy rain. Consequently, the roof is just basic shelter. There's a lot leaking in already. The video department are having a hell of a time. One of the leaks is directly above one of the stage "globes" which means the internal projector is being doused and worse, the ball itself is could become a huge water balloon.
Poor old (he's not old, he's just from the middle ages...) Chris Wood, he's near the open front of the stage and directly below a sizeable gap in the roof. He mixes the sound that the band hear in their "in-ear" headphones. He does it through a completely digital desk that will doubtless not take kindly to a soaking. He does most of the pre-show linecheck completely under his plastic sheeting.
The lightning remains in full effect throughout the first few songs. Clocks, I remember being particularly amazing visually. Lasers hacked through the downpour, whilst the lightning drew across the sky like a huge neon fireworks display all of its own. I'm aware that Paul Normandale (the show designer who has given Coldplay such a wonderful unique and distinctive look this time out) is out in the mix tower. I expect he's wondering how you could get the lightning to work a bit more in time with the music and grinning to himself.
When Yellow kicks in and all the lights fire out into the crowd, two things become obvious. Firstly, the rain is punishingly heavy. As the beams push out from the stage into the night, they show up exactly how hard and unremitting the rain is. It's so dense that it's difficult to see the back seats.
More interesting, though, is the second revelation. The crowd are still going absolutely nuts. Fair play to this lot, they're here for a good time and absolutely nothing is going to stop them. There are folks on each other's shoulders, people are cheering, singing and having a great night. Absolutely amazing response. Nobody could blame these folks for giving it a miss, or just turning up and cowering miserably under their coats wondering whether they should have really bothered.
They're amazing. We've had many great crowds on this tour, and even on a dry and regular day, this lot would be amongst the top ones. The fact that they're going for it in such grand style on such a miserable night wins them full marks all round.
The band clearly appreciate the energy they're being fed. Chris spends a good portion of his time out on the ramps getting completely soaked, showing solidarity with the drenched punters. With the rain so insanely heavy, the decision has been made that the B and C stage are coming onto the main stage. Folks are rushing round making the necessary logistical and technical changes to make this happen.
Bash relays the word to Will so the band know what's going on. For a song or so, things continue. Will then shouts down his mic that comes only to the crew's ears. "We have to do the B and C out there". He's made the decision and there's no questioning it. Off scurry a bunch of folks to reset things before Strawberry Swing comes to a close.
Now, this point illustrates Coldplay very well. They get a lot of stick for being "soft". The fact is though, that they have balls. I've never seen them take the easy option. Nobody would blame them for playing it safe here. They know, though, that the gig will be better if they're out there giving the punters the whole show, rather than bottling out and keeping dry. Note that Will said "we have to". Not "we probably should" or "can we try". This is as good an indicator as I can give of how things are done round here.
The B-stage is greeted with such massive applause that it's immediately obvious this decision is going to lift this show right through the roof (that is, if there were one...). For The Hardest Part, Chris spots someone in the crowd who's birthday it is tonight. Just for the sheer hell of it, she's brought up onstage and given a seat to his right.

I do remember Chris playing a rather excellent rendition of Singing In The Rain at one point. I'd have loved to have included an mp3 here, but the computer I record the gigs on made it about three songs into the deluge before losing its nerve completely and collapsing in a heap.
The C-Stage comes as an undoubted highlight. There's no bigger show of unity with the crowd than when the band are a little dot of light in amongst it all - floating just above the sea of voices. It's not without technical imperfections, but for emotional impact? Flawless.

I'm crossing the stage with my camera, as Stage Manager Kurt takes the opportunity to mop up the onstage puddles whilst the band are out in the crowd. As I pass Guy's mic, I bump into none other than Phil Harvey on his hands and knees mopping away with a fistful of towels. Trooper... ;-)
Adversity often bonds and brings out the best in folks. The show ends and the overwhelming feeling that it's been a huge victory all round is unmistakable. I bet we have some extremely unpleasant outdoor conditions this summer, but quite frankly, you can bring it on....

Why was this the only show in the Middle East? :bigcry::bigcry: they should have come to lebanon during the Viva tour instead of all the DJs and rappers that keep coming here:cry::bigcry:
some of my friends were able to go to Abu Dhabi and said it was more than amazing:D and had the best time.
