Killers and Coldplay to star at War Child's 15th birthday show
Neil Millard
28.01.09
THE Killers and Coldplay are set to perform a one-off concert for the War Child charity next month.
The performance will help celebrate the charity's 15th birthday and launch its latest album, Heroes, to support work with children in war zones around the world.
The charity went to the 15 acts it considers to be the biggest living music legends and asked them to select their favourite song from their back catalogue and a current artist to cover it.
Sir Paul McCartney chose Duffy, the UK's biggest-selling artist last year, to cover Live And Let Die and Franz Ferdinand recorded Blondie's Call Me.
Sir Paul said: "I have been supporting War Child since 1995. Their work with children in war zones saves lives. It's great that so many people gave their time, energy and support to this initiative. The breadth of talent on this project is amazing.
"I think Duffy's version of Live And Let Die is great, I was really impressed."
Others artists supporting the album include U2, The Kinks, Brian Wilson and Bruce Springsteen. Guy Garvey, from Elbow, who are covering U2's Running To Stand Still, said: "War Child do exactly what it says on the tin. These kids shouldn't be in such circumstances in the first place, but they are, so thank God someone's doing something about it."
Those hoping to be part of the 2,000 strong audience at the Coldplay/The Killers concert at the O2 Empire, Shepherd's Bush, on 18February will have to enter a lottery to buy tickets at £50 each.
The bands will perform at the venue after appearing at the Brit Awards the same night.
War Child's music director Ben Knowles said: "This is a really special way to mark War Child's 15th birthday and a once-in-a-lifetime night."
The ticket lottery for the concert will open at 9am on Friday. See www.warchildheroes.com for details. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said: "In our eyes, War Child is one of the world's most important charities, and The Killers are one of our favourite bands, so playing this concert is an absolute pleasure for us."
Heroes, released on 16 February, will be the charity's fifth album. The first four netted more than £5.5million which War Child used in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo where it supports former child soldiers.
War Child was set up in 1993 to raise money for child victims of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. U2 producer Brian Eno is a patron.

Thank you!
45 Minutes? Wow!
here:
http://coldplay.com/newsdetail.php?id=283&page=0
Good afternoon. We're very pleased to announce that Coldplay are coming together with The Killers in aid of War Child for an exclusive concert at London's newly renamed O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, in front of just 2,000 music fans, on Wednesday February 18th.
The event will follow that evening's Brit Awards. Each band will be bringing the highlights of their full set to the smaller stage in special 45 minute performances.
The night celebrates War Child’s 15th Anniversary and the release of their new album ‘Heroes’ (out on February 16th). War Child are supported for the evening by O2 to mark the launch of the O2 Academy venues.
Tickets to the event are £50 and will be available through a lottery system. The opportunity to enter the lottery will begin at 9am, Friday January 30th through www.warchildheroes.com. Coldplay.com also has a batch of 200 tickets which will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Check back to this website at 12noon tomorrow (Thursday) for details of how to buy some.
All profits from the show will go to aid War Child's work to protect the most marginalised children in war zones, who would otherwise be overlooked: street children, child soldiers and children in prison.

So badly!
I'm trying for weeks to get a ticket for a Killers concert, last night I thought about just buying a ticket to London and try my luck at the Brits or one week later at the Killers concert.
And today they announce this!
It would be so perfect!!!
I could go to see a play in London I just have to see (James McAvoy!!) AND go to this fantastic concert!!!
Oh my, I am so worried.
I try not to get my hopes up too much - but I can't help it.
I was trying for the past 2 hours to find somebody to cover my shift or refresh coldplay.com at 5pm GMT for me. No luck.

Ahh awesome, I really need to spend more time on here, just been rather busy with things in recent times. I am also attending the wembley gig so I will look into this. Do we have a rough estimate on numbers for the wembley gig/s?
Still though, only 2000 fans, say hald go to killers, half to coldplay, thats 1000 coldplay fans. Those of us who have tickets should feel so privileged! However, im also a big fan of killers, so this is the ultimate gig!

I'd love to hear
Don't Panic
Spies
Politik
In my place
Square One
White Shadows
42
Violet Hill
Glass of Water
LIT II
Ok... I'm happy with anything they'll play but I was wondering whether they'll play only new stuff then or whether they'll choose songs who... "fit well" with The Killers...
Also, should we try to organize the best coverage of the concert?
Like
- audio recordings

Or which one are you talking about? The one in front of the Television Centre?
I think 10am is a bit too much.
I was talking about the bbc tv gig, i got there at 11 am and the gig actually started as 7pm, queued for 8 hours for front row.
And i think proly have to queue even earlier for this. im hoping for front row again:D

Hey guys,
I know its a long shot but has anyone entered the ballot that got tickets? I just am desperate to go and to spend the prices indicated on ebay would be ludicrous. If anyone could help I'd for sure be your beer buying buddy (or soft drink friend) all night...
Thank you's in advance!

sorry I haven't heard of anything yet but the problem is that they just send email to winners so I guessit's hard to know....
i have another problem, can someone help me?
Last thursday when I bought my tickets, at the end of the process, I printed the full order details which said that my tickets are ground unreserved standing....
Then I got the confirmation e mail with the link to get my tickets and on it there are seats numbers.... So, seats or standing??? I still can't print the tickets because of the delay....
heroicrockstar

Hey dude,
They do that for ticketmaster. It is standing they just put them in seating numbers to justify the numbers. I had the same thing happen with my Wembley Standing tickets. So dont worry there. If you get an email casn I have your code? Id love to be able to go and not have to pay the ridiculous prices...
Hope that helps,

Hi! Like heroicrockstar said - it says "GA-0" or whatever. General admission. So no worries, you get to choose your place.
It says that you can print out the tickets only 7 days before the event.
So 11th the earliest. That "delay" notice is probably only a standard fill-in.
Before the sale of the tickets was enabled it said that tickets are sold out as well even though the sale hadn't even started.

If I understood your post correctly, you want to go to the concert without paying.
I think that is
1) not fair
2) quite impossible as they surely will check that everybody who wants to get in actually HAS a REAL ticket.
I take everything back and apologize if I misunderstood you.

Hey,
Sorry I didnt mean that in a horrible way. What I meant by unreasonable prices is eBay prices. £500 for 2 tickets is ALOT of money. And I cant afford that but will inevitably end up paying near that to try and go to this. Its my two favourite bands. I cant NOT go. I will pay for a code if someone has that. Would prefer to pay £50 for a code that works than £500 and maybe not be allowed in.
Im sorry that it came out wrong...
Can anyone help?

Hi Kirsten!!
It IS only a few hundred metres away! :D
I'm in for planning a meet-up as well!
Also "concert coverage" plans? Like talking about who will bring a camera, record the concert, film or take pictures? That would be great IMO.

Great!!
I already had a look at TfL for getting back after the concert...
Doesn't look good.
But we could share a taxi!!
It wouldn't be expensive if we share the costs.
The alternative to a taxi is WALKING it seems... and I'm not a fan of walking for (according to Google maps) 34 minutes in the middle of the night!

Soooooo sorry .... :embarassed:
You see, I'm old and I've got some swiss cheese in my head which happens to be my brain ... ;)
Sure it will be you as well which will make us 3 already :)
I reckon' the concert will finish way past midnight. When it's after the Brits and every band plays for 45 mins plus the rearranging of instruments and equipment aso. it won't probably finish before midnight.
And by the time everyone is out and at the tube station the service has probably already shut down?!
About 'concert coverage' ...
I have just bought myself a new camera and I am more than keen to try it out.
Don't know how good it is with videos/audios but I will try.
At least I have a 10 x optical zoom lense which will be very handy for nice close ups :wink3:
Unless the lightning isn't too poorly of course ... :\
scusi
07-02-2009, 09:49 PM
That's alright, all forgiven , I have mashed potato for brains, Swiss cheese sounds better. Yes, I think the tube shuts down around midnight and not sure about the night bus routes although I can investigate.
I have a friend whose husband is a London cabby, he doesn't work nights but I can find out roughly how much it will cost etc for a taxi cab.
Your camera sounds brilliant if you don't mind carrying it etc, my new little one is only 8mp and I haven't even tried it yet so although I will bring it to London , I will leave it behind when we go to the concert. Oooh I'm getting goose bumps talking about it. We want lots of close ups!
LittleMissMessy
07-02-2009, 10:04 PM
@ Carol
I don't mind the least taking my camera with me. No way I would ever leave it behind ... not at this location where you are close to the stage quite easily ... :)
It's a compact camera and comparatively small for the big lense it has so it won't be a big problem to sneak it into somewhere ... ;)
scusi
07-02-2009, 10:14 PM
That's brilliant about your camera. There is a tube service from Shepherds bush until 1am but if we change at Hammersmith the last one from there is 00.37 and reaches Earls Court 00.44 so as you say it would be tricky! I think it was easier to get around in Paris!! We just got a bus from the venue to the hotel and it took 10 minutes and only 2 other people on the bus!
LittleMissMessy
07-02-2009, 10:25 PM
It would be easier to travel over here as well as underground and busses go the whole night through (well, not every 5 minutes but I guess every 20 minutes or so).
scusi
07-02-2009, 10:32 PM
Let's just get them to move it over there then.
:thinking:Sometimes I think London is stuck in the dark ages. There are night buses so we can always get times for them at some point but it would mean changing. I'm from the East End myself so don't know that area very well, I only go as far as Oxford Street or Chelsea ;-))

If I were you I would check ticketmaster very often because I think that some tickets might be sold again....but I may be wrong.....
In fact I find it very stange that there are no ballot winners from this forum.....We're approximately 20 here to have tickets from last thursday's 200 tickets but that's all.... I wonder wether they've already emailed the winners or not....
Anyway it is obvious that not all the people who entered the ballot will buy tickets which makes me think that there might be tickets to buy on ticketmaster soon.... But that's just my intuition.....

Hi I haven't posted on here before but I really wanted to as I am another one of the lucky few that managed to get a ticket. I actually got 2 of the 200 they sold on the pre-sale.
I just had a couple of questions for the other people that are going as although I live in London and have been to Shepherd's Bush Empire loads of times before, I just wanted to check a few things as this is such a one off opportunity!
1. What time are you all planning on getting there? Do you think we need to queue from really early in the day?
2. I know the tickets say standing, but I wondered if we would have the option of going upstairs once we get inside, normally this is fine at gigs there?
3. Has anyone downloaded their ticket yet from the link? I know it says 7 days and I wasn't going to do it before Wednesday but I also didn't want to cock it up for any reason.
The tickets are so precious and I am SO excited!
Thanks so much

Over 200,000 fans try to get tickets for War Child concert
Over 200,000 people tried to get tickets for Coldplay and The Killers’ joint-headlining show in aid of War Child – breaking all traffic records to the charity’s website.
The ballot winners for the 2,000 capacity show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on February 18 were drawn yesterday (February 9). “The response has been phenomenal,” says War Child’s Music Director Ben Knowles. “It will be a great thrill to be able to welcome the two biggest bands of the 21st Century to the same stage.”
“Coldplay were one of the bands that gave us hope when we were just four boys in a garage,” a statement from The Killers said. “To share the stage with them for the War Child cause is an honour.”

The venue's great and really tiny, this could be the best gig since Brixton. The view from the seating area is great :)
I tried but obviously failed with the ballot :( I may not be able to make it anyway, and it's too soon to say about next week, but if I can I will try to get up there even without a ticket in the hope of getting one, and to say hello to a few people from here
That said, if anyone has a spare ticket please do get in touch. I will buy it and if I cannot make it myself I will pass it on to someone on here.
