Coldplay will visit New Zealand following their eleven arena shows in Australia next March, promoter Chugg Entertainment confirmed today. The band will play at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Wednesday 18 March 2009 with tickets going on sale to on Monday 22 December from www.ticketmaster.co.nz (http://www.ticketmaster.co.nz). The show will be part of their Viva La Vida world tour, in support of their new album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.
New Zealand missed out on Coldplay's last world tour, rumoured to be because Auckland lacked a decent venue for them to perform in. They have performed here previously at the 2001 Big Day Out. Their last New Zealand performance was at the Auckland Showgrounds in 2003. Promoter Michael Chugg said: "Finally, fans can take a well deserved deep breath. The wait is over New Zealand. We will be bringing Coldplay’s Viva La Vida tour to Vector Arena next March and it’s going to be huge."
Tickets to the show go on sale from Ticketmaster on Monday at 9am. However a pre-sale will be offered to Visa card holders from 9am local time on Friday 19 December and run through until 5pm on Saturday 20 December, unless tickets sell out earlier.

Awesome news, just seen it on the news this evening. I'll be there for sure, first chance to see them live. :)
They missed us out last time due to no decent venue but now we have the new Vector Arena everyone who goes to Australia is coming here at the same time. VISA pre-sale on Friday.
As for parking arrangements, when I've been to Vector I tend to park in the Downtown carpark. Bit of a walk I know but at least I know the car is safe, and I've always been with a mate so we grab something to eat at downtown beforehand anyway. What does anyone else do?

I took the bus into the Vector Arena (For Smashing Pumpkins/QOTSA) - from Onehunga, first time on Public transport for ages, and probably the last time, came out at 11.30 on a Saturday and there were no buses going back! had to take a taxi home . . . now I just park in Parnell and walk down . . public transport here is terrible . . still, have been listing to Viva la Vida all day . . . . . well happy about todays news!

Ticket prices - NZ $99.90 - NZ $179.90 how does that compare to the rest of the tour/world?
invisibleman18
16-12-2008, 09:46 AM
Yeah public transport is terrible and it would be a nightmare getting back to Howick where I live at that time of night so much better to drive.
Where did you see that price range? Bit more expensive than I expected. Thought the highest would be roughly $130 or so but it's still not too bad considering how one off this is living here.

I paid $140 Aus for gold seats, gggrrrrrrrrr now I am pi#$ed as we thought that COLDPLAY might over look NZ again, so we brought tickets to the aussie shows lol oh well i get a 10 day holiday out of it but now I am trying to convince hubby to also let us go to the Auckland show lol :laugh3::laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:Ticket prices - NZ $99.90 - NZ $179.90 how does that compare to the rest of the tour/world?

I can maybe afford $99 (juusst), but not $179. And I hate GA. And shitty seats. So let's hope $99 or close to will buy a half decent seat.

yes, finally. I thought we were going to be passed again. Apparently there are rumours of a second show?
invisibleman18
17-12-2008, 04:18 AM
There will probably be a 2nd show. Usually these bands announce one show first but if it sells out really quickly (ie, Red Hot Chili Peppers sold out in minutes or something crazy) then they add a 2nd show the next day or something because of the high demand. I imagine this will get pretty close to selling out on Monday so there should be a 2nd one announced.

All I can say is they must have sold a shit load of tickets in today's pre-sale because already a 2nd show the next day has been announced! Wouldn't have expected that until the first had at least been on general sale on Monday.
got my tickets, not sure about the seats, i got the best i could get. :/ Anyone know the seats really well there? I got lower bowl, row p, seats 188 and 189
Lower bowl is best. Upper bowl is too high to see anything that well, especially if you are far back. Have a look at the venue map on ticketmaster and you can sort of work out where you are. If you see the numbers in the corner of each section, I believe they are the number of the seat at that end of the section. But the front row is actually K, not A so you are not too far back in row P.

These tickets are selling fast. Christmas has depleted me of literally all of my money so it looks like I'm forced to let this one pass by. Which sucks. But at least I have NIN.

I'm 35 in January and am thinking of asking my sister to get me a ticket to the Auckland concert.
invisibleman18
23-12-2008, 01:23 AM
Hurry up before they both sell out! I just had a look for the best available seat for the first show out of interest and it couldn't find anything which suggests all seats are gone for that one.
Did you manage to get a ticket Rick?
Cascading Waterfall
30-12-2008, 08:22 AM
Sadly it's not possible for me to attend the Auckland concert because of the cost. Not only of the ticket, but there will also be airfares to and from Wellington and Auckland airports, plus hotel accomodation in Auckland and then there's transport as well.

I'd recently seen the Coldplay concert in Auckland advertised on TV and now there will be a 2nd concert. A friend of mine is going to Auckland to see them. I am so jealous.
invisibleman18
12-01-2009, 11:46 AM
Has anyone who bought tickets online from ticketmaster received them yet? Got mine in the 1st pre-sale and they still haven't come which is odd for ticketmaster. Usually they come within a few days. Has been the holiday period though to be fair. Guess I should give them a ring in a couple of days if they still haven't arrived.
Cascading Waterfall
13-01-2009, 02:10 AM
Yes if your tickets haven't arrived by the end of the week, it will be a good idea to contact Ticketmaster to find out what's causing the delay.

Anyone know whose supporting? I've seen in some of the ads that the concert includes 'special guests'. I doubt it will be anyone too special.. i think the best band to support coldplay from nz would probably be opshop
invisibleman18
17-01-2009, 12:47 PM

Oh man I am so keen to go seem them! But none of my friends are as a big a fan as me, so I would have no one to go with... And I've left it a bit too late to consider any other way now as the main one's I can see left over are the $179.. Too pricey for me at the moment, especially as I have to get textbooks for Uni soon. I'm so jealous of everyone else though! You're gonna have such a fantastic time! XD

Anyone wanting to swap their Thursday night tickets for Wednesday night? I've been called up to get my wisdom teeth out on the Wednesday afternoon which means I can no longer make it on Wed night! Dammit!
The tickets are for two people, entry D row KK seats 723 and 722 and paid $129.50 for each of them - willing to pay the difference if your seats are better. PM me if you are interested

Coldplay, have touched down in Auckland ahead of their two New Zealand shows.
They flew in on Tuesday night from Sydney, after playing 11 concerts in Australia, as well as performing a set at one of two Australian Sound Relief concerts, to aid Victorian bushfire and Queensland flood victims.
The last time Coldplay were in New Zealand was at the Big Day Out in 2001. They are in the middle of a world tour for their latest album Viva La Vida. They play at Auckland's Vector Arena on Wednesday and Thursday night.

Review: Coldplay at Vector Arena
Say what you like about Coldplay - the band knows how to control atmosphere. They have the rare and awe-inspiring ability to change how you feel, and change how an entire room feels.
It had been six long years - and two chart topping albums - since Coldplay last came for a meet-and-greet in New Zealand so it was only fitting the band put on a proper show at the Vector Arena. From the hypnotic laser show that accompanied Clocks early in the night, to the pulsing, blaze of strobe lights that capped off Politik, the band treated us to all their best bells and whistles.
Martin pulled out his best dance moves - like the erratic jerking of a puppet in knots - and even drummer Will Champion gave a little something extra in the form of an original bluegrass ditty he wrote some years back. They played the new hits and the old favourites. But Coldplay's greatest skill is playing the crowd, which they did with such deft precision it left no doubt as to why this band are so big.
They even broke out their best Les Miserables costumes to accompany a French revolution backdrop.
As giant yellow confetti filled balloons rained from the ceiling during their early hit Yellow, all of Vector Arena delighted in the bouncing rubber spheres. As Chris Martin pulled a pew up to his piano and played the haunting, opening lines of 42, goosebumps prickled the necks of all those present.
As glowing spherical lamps descended from the ceiling, the crowd stood mesmerised by the twirling, psychedelic pools of multi-coloured light. As the band ran from the main stage to the back of the arena and into grand stand - where they played songs including a cover of The Monkees' I'm A Believer - the sell-out audience beamed as the band showed they weren't too cool to get among them.
"You can't come all the way to New Zealand without coming to the back of the room," said Martin. "After a 97-hour flight, you want to meet everyone."

Gig review: Coldplay in Auckland
http://static.stuff.co.nz/1237376892/170/2275170.jpg
Coldplay gave new meaning to the word 'epic' as they played the first of two shows at Auckland's Vector Arena. Reviewer Chris Schulz was there.
Forget about the faux French Revolution uniforms. Flag away accusations they make "music for bedwetters". And ignore all that gossip about the Hollywood marriage, the macrobiotic diet and naming your kids after fruit.
When Coldplay take to the stage, something epic happens.
Singles you've dismissed as radio-friendly fodder become foot-stomping classics. Songs thought of as straight U2 ripoffs turn into surprisingly grunty rock numbers.
And you'll find yourself singing along to previously ropey ballads, as the British rock act bend them into stirring singalongs, warming your heart like a nice hot cup of cocoa.
Even frontman Chris Martin stops being an annoying celebrity do-gooder when he plays live, endearing himself to the crowd with his tailor-made lyrics, self-deprecating humour and overwhelming energy.
Thanks to his rafter-raising voice and deft piano skills, you can even forgive Martin when he dances around like a drunk teddy bear, pretending he's been shot.
Yep, Coldplay took Vector Arena's sold out crowd to epic heights not yet seen at the two-year-old stadium in their first New Zealand show in a whopping six years.
Patient fans who'd waited that long to see them were treated to a two-hour set of hits cherry-picked from Coldplay's four albums - including many from last year's award-winning Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.
They were adorned with more garnish than a Christmas dinner spread. Lasers scanned the crowd. Giant orbs descended from the roof. Giant screens illuminated the stage. Glitter machines flooded the arena with paper butterflies.
And runways down the sides of the stadium allowed Martin, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion and guitarist Jonny Buckland to get up close and personal with their fans.
At one point the quartet delivered a daft disco remix of God Put a Smile on Your Face using miniature instruments set up on one of the runways. They were so close to the crowd, at least one fan fainted.
Then there was the mid-set three-track routine performed at the very back of Vector, as the foursome perched precariously on a small stage. Martin said was like performing "on the edge of the Grand Canyon".
It didn't all run to plan. They had their very own Spinal Tap moment as giant confetti-filled balloons bounced around the stadium, with two of the biggest landing - and popping - over Chris Martin as he sang a disjointed version of fan favourite Yellow.
No wonder he couldn't sing properly - he was too busy clearing confetti out of his hair and booting balloons off the stage. Perhaps some football boots would have helped.
But Coldplay delivered where it counted, peppering their set with epic anthems and soaring ballads that prove they deserve to be counted among the world's biggest bands.
There was the laser-enhanced version of Clocks, the wildly energetic In My Place, the feel-good vibes of Strawberry Swing, the drum-heavy Viva La Vida, the middle-eastern tinged prog-rocker 42 and the concert-opening-and-closing Life In Technicolour.
And Politik proved Martin can take the blandest of lyrics - in this case it's, "Open up your eye-eye-eye-ahh-eye-eyes" - and turning it into something powerful and memorable.
It's a bloody hard trick that, time and again, Coldplay make look all-too easy.
They didn't play Speed of Sound, but it didn't matter when they belted out breathtaking ballad Fix You, which saw a piano-based Martin acting like a crowd conductor as 12,000 Kiwi fans sang nearly the entire song for him.
It just doesn't get more epic than that.

Review: Coldplay in concert
Six years is a long wait for one of the biggest bands in the world to head to New Zealand.
But finally on Wednesday night, Coldplay kept a promise to us Kiwis - that if we built a decent arena, they'd play it.
The last time they graced these shores was in 2001 at the Big Day Out.
So with heavy expectation at the Vector Arena, the stage was set for a welcome return.
And boy - they did not disappoint.
After a slightly muted (and woefully brief) turn from Hollie Smith, ethereal 90s soundscape creators Mercury Rev took to the stage.
With blasts from the past including Holes from their greatest album Deserter's Songs, the band set the right tone for the night ahead.
But clearly the entire audience was there to see Coldplay grace us with hits from their past albums and from their current album, Viva La Vida.
After a breakdancing cleaner (!) swept down the side stages for the band, they erupted onto the stage.
And then everyone fell in love - once again - with Chris Martin and the boys.
Two giant screens midway in the arena allowed those far, far away at the back to enjoy the thunderous show they put on - lasers strobed the arena during Clocks, the lights pounded during Politik and the entire audience sang along to Fix U.
It's difficult to sum up the kind of energy Chris Martin brings to every performance - from skipping across the stage to theatrically falling down during the end of some songs, he clearly gives us heart and soul during every show.
That's probably some indication of why this is one of the hottest shows in New Zealand - or even the world - right now.
But the band hasn't lost their playfulness either with Martin exalting us to be loud enough and they would play some of their old stuff - cue Yellow complete with balloons falling from the rafters and being punted around the Vector until they exploded with confetti sprawling out.
However, the best moment of the night came when Coldplay showed they haven't lost their personal touch.
Leaving the stage on what appeared to be a victory lap, they took up residence right at the back of the arena to perform a slightly more intimate few numbers - including Green Eyes, a song from drummer Will Champion and a thunderous version of the Monkees I'm a Believer.
It was then after Chris explained you don't take a 97 hour flight and not meet everyone, that the band amply demonstrated why they have put on the best show this year - so far.
When it ended and the audience dutifully filed out, there wasn't an unhappy face to be seen as they spilled onto the streets.
If you don't have a ticket to Thursday night's final performance, beg, borrow (but don't steal) whatever you need to get there.

No, they opened with Life in Technicolor from the album, and played Life in Technicolor ii from Prospekt's March in the encore. Not exactly the same track twice. :)

Finally got a chance to sit down and relive the concert.
Easily the best concert I have been to even if it is only my 4th (the previous being Snow Patrol x 2 and Matchbox 20). It was also my 4th time at Vector Arena (Snow Patrol, Matchbox 20 and Billy Connolly previously) and the first time I have seen it sold out and packed from wall to wall. Previously it's only been half full with the stage pushed forward and half the place curtained off. It's hard to put into words but I think 'epic' is the best way to sum it up in 1 word. It had everything - spectacular globes hanging from the ceiling with special effects, lasers, balloons bouncing throughout the crowd, the band going up into the audience for a short acoustic set and tonnes of multi coloured confetti flying all over the place.
Finally the lights went out, Life in Technicolor began playing and the band emerged onto the stage at about 9.15pm. Anticipation was high after sitting through a couple of pretty mediocre support acts (in my opinion anyway - at least, they did nothing to make me want to seek them out on youtube or listen to their albums which support acts from previous concerts have done for me). Great opening from Coldplay went straight into Violet Hill then Clocks which was accompanied by an amazing laser light show then In My Place. Brilliant opening to the concert.
Chris Martin then asked the crowd to make a lot of noise if we wanted some older hits like Yellow. Yellow then began after much screaming and yellow balloons filled with confetti appeared from nowhere and bounced throughout the crowd before eventually burtsing. I filmed almost all the song until one of the stewards asked me to stop so I stuck to photos after that.
The show continued with the same setlist and Fix You and Viva La Vida were highlights with the entire crowd singing every word. The band then went up into the the stand at the back to play a few acoustic tracks amongst the crowd. Green Eyes was followed by an old Will sung track (Death Will Never Conquer). A cover of I'm a Believer then followed which was very well received by the crowd.
There was then a short break while the band returned to the stage and they went into Politik which was followed by Lovers in Japan during which tonnes of multi coloured confetti appeared from nowhere. They said their thanks and left the stage after Death and All His Friends. A few people on the ground started leaving but I said to my mate that they were leaving a bit early. There hadn't really been a proper encore and there were still 2 or 3 quite big songs that hadn't been played yet so I was sure they'd be back. And they were with The Scientist which is one of my favourites. Life in Technicolor ii completed the show which made a great ending.
Turned into an expensive night with the $180NZ ticket, the $50 tour t-shirt with show locations on the back and the $25 program I bought, added to parking and dinner costs but it was well worth it. Pretty good program actually. Usually they cost about the same but are much thinner and not worth looking at.
Now I'll start sorting through photos and post the ones that came out OK, along with my videos.

I was worried!
When he first started singing, he sounded off. When he talked to the crowd, he sounded sick so I thought he must be feeling under the weather or something. Then the whole weird thing with 42 and I thought, "Damn! He is sick! Is he going to faint?!"
Not sure whether he was play acting or not.
Btw, Speed of Sound wasn't played right? I don't remember that but it's listed on the unconfirm setlist.
EDIT: Will try to post my pics and review tonight. I haven't yet sorted through my pics yet.

Okay ive had "In My Place" in my head all day! That was only one of the amazing performances....each song was so amazing - unfortunity Im not a camera-wiz but ill putt everything I got frm the concert - might enjoy it....
they came up the back near the end and preformed "Green Eyes" I ran to be behind them - a couple are zoomed in - but most just natural because we were so close - if only Guy reached out his hand - i could have touched it. But I respect them so having them near was enough,
okay my computers crapped out lol

Oh wow! I am so happy and feeling so fantastic right now! Still on the high form last night! Not everyone will know, but originally I wasn't going to the concert as I wasn't able to get a ticket, or find someone to go with, but yesterday at like 4pm, my mum rang me at Uni to see if I would still like to go (of course!!!) and so she was able to get tickets for both of us!
It was so unbelievably good! I had seats but I was up the whole time, dancing and singing along with every song ^_^ I am so jealous of the people who got to be near them when they went to the back - by the way Robiso89 that pic of Guy is awesome! That's so cool that you got to be so close to them >.<
Sorry everyone for my enthusiasm but I can still hardly believe that I was actually there, at the show xD Chris and the band are so talented and amazing and I'm running out of adjectives to describe it all :D
So good to see all of your photos and videos, and read all of your thoughts as well ^_^

Well, here's my review and pics. Finally! :P
The concert was freaking amazing. It was everything I expected it to be and then some.
I was standing next to one of the side ramps and I was about 4 rows away from the stage. Knowing that they would play up front on the ramps, I wanted to be as close to them as possible so I was happy with where I was. But they played at the other ramp. Gah!
The two supporting acts that were a bore. You could see the crowd getting restless - some starting to boo even, me included. Lol.
My favourite performance was of In My Place, Lovers In Japan, Cemeteries of London, Fix You and Life in Technicolour II. I'm sooo glad they played Glass of Water! I was hoping they would play that instead of CSC. I was probably the only one in my section singing that song.
The crowd wasn't as responsive as I liked but it was still a great performance overall. Chris still managed to interact with the crowd very smoothly even though we didn't give him the response that he wanted. I tried sticking around after the show, hoping the band would come out again to sign autographs or something but the security guards kept chasing us out. Couldn't get the setlist either. Damn.
I spent close to $500 for this concert and it was worth every dollar. I can't wait for the next concert. :D
Pics are uploaded on Facebook. It's open to the public for a few days so those without an account can still view them here (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=70052&id=509812748&l=ed993b8a4e). There are 3 albums - the link is to the first one. :)
