Coldplay have shown they are open to change, writes Andrew Murfett.
FOR a band trading in supposedly inoffensive rock music, Coldplay have an extraordinary capacity to offend. There's the malarkey that goes with Chris Martin, the lively, idiosyncratic, tabloid-magnet frontman who is married to Gwyneth Paltrow. Then there's Coldplay's music. In a genre demanding risk and ingenuity, Coldplay have frequently been laden by rock critics and fans alike with the dreaded "safe" tag.
The band's biggest crime, according to naysayers, is they sell records. Tens of millions of them. If they are embraced by the masses who swallow Nickelback and Lady GaGa, they can't be any good then, can they?
Last year, that perception began to change slightly. By employing veteran musician and producer Brian Eno for their fourth album, Viva La Vida, Coldplay shifted their sound and delivered one of their best records, one that at least compensated for their bloated third album, X&Y.
This week they arrive in Australia for the first time in almost three years. More than 100 shows into a world tour, they have their 90-minute arena extravaganza down pat.
Although Viva is well represented, the set-list also embraces Coldplay's biggest hits: Clocks, Yellow, Speed of Sound, In My Place and The Scientist, which is performed on a mini-stage, up in the nosebleeds.
"We're better at designing shows and performances," says guitarist Guy Berryman. "We try and take a big space with a lot of people and make it feel as small as possible. We have different areas in the arenas we play. And we have a few production tricks up our sleeves."
Berryman admits employing Eno (and co-producer Markus Dravs, who has worked with the Arcade Fire) was an attempt to shift perceptions of the band and their overall sound.
"We wanted to have different songs and sounds," he says. "Nobody wants to hear a band churn out the same record over and over. It gets boring. We wanted to freshen it up and see where things would lead us. There was no game plan. We wanted to turn heads and we got about halfway there to doing that."
Was it difficult balancing the creative requirement for experimentation with the expectations of their enormous fan base?
"What we haven't left behind is songs and melody, which is what people like about us," he says. "It's how you dress those songs that makes a difference. We will always retain those elements, no matter what we do."
X&Y, released in 2005, was a painstakingly methodical record that endured a protracted recording process and delayed release that shrunk the share price of the band's label, EMI. Although deemed a misstep for the band, it's a misstep that sold more than 10 million copies.
"We thought the third record was a little bit too long to listen to from beginning to end," says Berryman, when asked of its perceived faults.
So gratified are the band with the contrasting circumstances in making Viva La Vida, they are eager to repeat the process, and have already started work on a follow-up.
Although Berryman says "you can't be a popular band without having negative press or backlashes", there is no doubt the band has been stung.
In particular, The Case Against Coldplay, a stunningly disparaging New York Times essay written in 2005, hurt. The paper's music writer Jon Pareles called Coldplay "the most insufferable band of the decade".
Says Berryman wearily of the piece: "I can understand a lot of the reasons why people don't like our music. But I find it strange somebody would go to such a strong length to try and topple it. If you don't like it, fine. But why spend your days coming up with a plot to bring us down?"

Totally agree.I like the New York Times but that guy was a complete jerk.He didn't have to be so mean.Plus, I think that even if you don't like Coldplay there is much much much worse.I mean who in the US these produces anything really good or lyrics that make sense? I can't think of a lot of bands (Arcade Fire = Canadian). I mean, come on, we hear so much about the Jonas Brothers. It just pisses me off a little.

Re: Jizo -- Ah, yep -- sounds like the set-up for Melbourne, too. I really hope they go into the crowd...
Any other concerts go-ers remember if the 'C-Stage' was marked on the Seating Plan for their venues...?
no, it's never marked.
I can't see it on the left side, on that pic. It might be in the back area.
is there a separation in the floor area?
crestingwaves
27-02-2009, 12:01 PM
Oh, I'm sure they'll have the C-stage. They won't get rid of it just cos they're in Australia. It's all apart of their concept of 'making the arena as small a place as possible' - as mentioned in the Australia Tour Preview thing you mighta read somewhere.
I'm on for the 3rd of March gig. I'll be there in the front row

Hmm. Well, I doubt there will be massive changes.
Half of me says that they didn't change it for Japan, so why would they for Australia.
But then I think that they always talk about Australia as a special place to finally go in their tour, so maybe they'll treat us to something. Who knows? Time will tell I guess.

27th February 2009, 22:22 WST
Coldplay kicked off their Viva tour of Australia before 17,000 fans at Perth's Burswood Dome on Friday night. At the first of two concerts in the west before moving on to Melbourne, the British band still had plenty of their old favourites to complement hits off their Viva La Vida album.
Led by vocalist Chris Martin, the four-piece, alternative rock band waved sparklers as they moved onto the stage before a huge backdrop of the Liberty cover from their Viva La Vida release.
They opened with a brief rendition of Life in Technicolor before moving onto another of the Viva songs, Violet Hill, and then delighting the crowd with one of their old favourites, Clocks, from their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head.
They then turned to the biggest selling album in the world last year, launching Cemeteries of London, 42, and Strawberry Swing.
Among the older numbers from the band were In My Place, Fix You, Yellow, The Scientist and Speed of Sound.
In a 20-song playlist, the band kept Life in Technicolor for the final number of the night and included all the songs off the new album.

I didn't do techno, I did Coldplay -- it works for a bit, but then you just get annoyed or something.
Tiredness consumes.
Damn Melbourne for being two hours ahead...

I'm listening to Cut Copy they're good for this time of the night, gonna listen to Evermore's new tracks, that should really do the trick. Tiredness does consume. I should be wide awake still, but i had a long day and feel like i could sleep for hours. Yeah time differences can make it awfully difficult

Oh, yellowtalk -- that's what I can do; get the new Evermore tracks.
I played Softball today for school, and it was pretty sunny here in Melbourne, so that really takes it out of you. I'm usually pretty good at this time of night (well, when I have school the next day, anyway). :D

Their new tracks are quite good actually!! I've gotta be asleep before 10 on school night or after 11:30 or i'm totally stuffed the next day.

When I was in high school, it was max 12 midnight in bed or there was no way I'd be awake for a whole school day.
I still wonder how I actually passed my HSC to this day. :P

I should be in bed around then, but I get distracted, lol... teehee. :D
Yeah, I'm quite liking; 'Hey Boys & Girls' -- their sound is different, though. A good evolution, I think. Ever since Coldplay, I've been far more accepting of experimentation -- it offers a variety.
Looking forward to the new album. :)

ROFL, annie89. Yep, 12 is usually my limit. My sleep patterns are so fucked, though; and it's terrible, especially since I'm doing my final year -- it can really screw you around.
Yellow, are you a fan of Evermore? Do you like their previous stuff?
