Coldplay was so close, SO CLOSE, to making a perfect song, but now I find myself wondering the same question as I did when I left their concert this year: "Is this it?". Where's the rest of the song? It was going so well: the melody, the lyrics, the chord changes, were (and are) so beautiful. But all of a sudden, the song just...well...stops. What the heck?! Are we going to have to wait for a Part II of this song too? I'm very disappointed with this song.

TO be honest PP/PF isn't anywhere CLOSE to being the perfect song. It's good, but meh, it's not great.

ivw listened to it twice but it still doesn't stand out. It will have to grow on me.

I agree, the song isn't bad, but it's no classic.

It's good, but it didn't have a strong effect on me, like, for example, A Rush Of Blood To The Head did.

I can't believe some of you don't like it. This is amazing. Short, sweet...serene.

Stop fucking complaining.

for fucks sake

you all bang on about how much you can't wait for the new stuff
and then when you get it you're like 'Well, personally I would do this'
yeah? there's a reason you're not in a signed band then.

the song is fucking GOOD.
don't complain because it doesn't sound how you wanted it to in your head before you'd even heard it.

great tune

could have been longer, that is all i am going to say

everyone's entitled to their own opinions, all some of us are saying is that it could've been longer. don't get me wrong, it's a great song; god knows i couldn't write it. but as coldplay fans, we've seen what they're capable of and we expect more from them is all.

i see what they're saying. it's definitely beautiful, no doubt. just wish it was much longer. like a 6 minute.

they could've really went further with 'Prospekt's March' and the "here i lie..." line. then used a longer bit of 'Poppy Fields' at the end.

It's my personal favorite from the album, but I personally like the ending.

However, I think that if they did extend it, it could be their best song ever.

I listen to everything on my top-notch sound system....amazing. 3 minutes or 10.

best song on "prospekt's march", for sure.

BUT it really is waaaaay too short.
it got me, though.
in the same way the entire "arobtth" album got me. it's like "old" coldplay.
the coldplay style i fell in love with a while back.

I like it. It is not bad, but it is not the best.

I would definitely say that this is the weakest of the new songs on the EP. It is definitely a B side worthy song, nothing more. Not much substence to it. Just kinda boring. Sounds kind of like some other b sides.

I agree. It's beautiful, and I don't mind the ending at all. Definitely my favorite from the album as well... and yeah, I wouldn't MIND if it was longer, but I'm still very pleased with the way it is.

I love what's there -- very atmospheric, gorgeous song -- but I do get what other people are saying. There was potential for this to be epic. Instead, it settles for being a nice (small) song. Perfectly fine.

What I find baffling -- why did they bother naming "Poppyfields"? Not a big deal, just weird seeing as it easily passes as a part of "Prospekt's March." I wonder why they didn't give a separate name to the last few seconds of "Cemeteries of London" now. lol

AH! I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING about the COL end ;)

Good one.

Prospekt's March is a very sad song IMO...it's like this after-war anthem... Devastation and all... I love it. (the song not devastation lol)

i'm probably way off mark, but, as poppies suggest rememberence for those who have passed (particularly soldiers) might there be some significance to it?

its the first thing i thought of anyway.. 'i don't want to die on my own tonight/but here i lie on my own in a seperate sky'

and then it drops off.. and then comes poppyfields...

or maybe not :shy: :P

I totally agree this song demanded a lot more time to make it something more than what it is, it just feels like a wasted opportunity. Still, it's the highlight of the EP for me.

It resolves beautifully, with rising guitars and chris giving us his most clean vocal yet and he tears out his soul (or something)

Where really could this go? a guitar solo? I think not.

Perfect song as it is. Far better than the next best thing Everybody hurts.

If the song was longer and had more to it it could of been one of the best songs from their Prospekt sessions. As it is, it is hauntingly beautiful and there is something slightly epic about it. When the end comes, however, it feels as if it is just getting off the ground. It should of been 5 min in the vein of A Rush of Blood to the Head or Amsterdam

Its beautiful, and I agree it should have been much longer. If they really want to make shorter albums or EP's in this case I would rather they give us less songs that had a longer running time.
A short song here and there has its place, but these self imposed time constraints are starting to interfere with the overall quality of the songs when they seem to feel that EVERY song must be that way. It sounds unfinished.

This is equivalent to easy to please, or see you soon. Not a full fledged radio ready song. But a masterwork nonetheless. I say any CP fan since parachutes that doesn't really like this song, is just plain spoiled.

Magnus
04-12-2008, 04:56 PM
Yes, I have a feeling that this song is also unfinished, just like Postcards...

Even in this version they both are the highlights of the album for me (along with LIT 2), but they would've been perfect if finished.

when i first read this thread, i hadn't heard the song before ( because i waited 'till it was released ) and i was thinking : what are they complaining about ? every song has got to end sometime.

but after i heard it, i felt just the same way. i always feel like shouting : c'mon Chris continu !
but we'll have to live with the fact that this piece of beauty is a very short one, but that doesn't change the fact that it's wonderful !

Famous Old Painter

I totally feel the same, though I think I mentioned it in another thread. The song keeps building and building and if it were just a minute and a half longer it could've been a massive beautiful masterpiece but it just unwinds. It feels like half a song to me.

agreed completely, it's definitely a grower though. But i agree with the poster it's near perfect. I think the length is just right. leaves u wanting more. definitely in coldplays top 10 songs without a doubt though.

Ha, there hasn't been any discussion about this song in a while, so I'll start it up again.

I think this is a beautiful, passionate and thoughtful song, but I do feel like there should be more. I think it would be awesome with more lyrics at the end. Whenever I listen to it, I can feel more lyrics at the end, and then they aren't there.....

But this is Coldplay we're talking about, so I guess they know what they're doing....

OMG! YES! That's what I felt when I bought it off of iTunes...My favorite off the EP and yes, beautiful beyond words...but it's a short song...what 2 and 1/2 minutes??? I was truly sad when I saw that, that was all...:(
But i totally agree Coldplay almost had the most perfect song!

I've been a mega fan since day 1 and I've been to few gigs and I listened to Coldplay ALL THE TIME.
THIS song has been the MOST played song on my ipod since its release beating all the other songs and all the non Coldplay songs and my workout songs.
Definitely in my top 3 all time favorite songs and I'm so glad they named the EP Prospekt's March because it tells me that the boys REALLY like this song too.

You only think it's too short because it's AMAZINGLY good. If it was crap, you wouldn't want to listen to 1 minute of it and wouldn't be asking for more.

I like this one, but the Viva era is so great it gets average next to any other song on Prospekt's March or Viva La Vida.
