Supergroup snubs Adelaide
PETRA STARKE
November 23, 2008 12:30am
The English group yesterday announced it will tour Australia in February and March of next year – but Adelaide is not on the itinerary.
South Australian fans will instead have to pay for flights to one of the band's performances in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne.
The snub comes after punk-pop superstar Pink this week announced a fourth show at the Entertainment Centre in August, bringing the US singer's number of Australian dates to 34.
But a spokeswoman for touring company Chugg Entertainment said there were no plans to add Adelaide to the Coldplay schedule at a later date.
That was despite the band playing at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on their 2006 tour.
"We were given a specific window of availability for Coldplay's Australian tour and, unfortunately, despite our best efforts, it was not possible to route the tour through Adelaide this time around," the spokeswoman said.
Coldplay is the latest in a line of big-name acts to dodge Adelaide.
Kylie Minogue is only playing Sydney and Melbourne when she brings her X2008 tour Down Under next month.
Similarly, rapper Kanye West and American electro-pop group MGMT have only scheduled December concerts in the eastern states.
Rock veterans Sting and Eric Clapton are also eschewing Adelaide in their forthcoming tours.
With Coldplay's tour billed as its biggest ever, there has been speculation the band may miss Adelaide due to the lack of an appropriate venue.
This comes after the Sunday Mail reported last week that the Adelaide Entertainment Centre has come under fire from tour promoters for being "tired" and "poor and dated".
The comments, made in a Public Works Committee report tabled in Parliament last month, included a statement from Michael Chugg, director of Chugg Entertainment, the promoters behind Coldplay's Australian tour.
In the report, Mr Chugg – who has previously brought tours from Sir Elton John and Keith Urban to Adelaide – describes the centre as "well below the standards expected from a major capital city such as Adelaide".
Coldplay's Sydney and Melbourne concerts are being staged at the Rod Laver Arena and ACER Arena.
Local concert promoter Trevor Hunt says AAMI Stadium would be more than suitable for such a tour.
"When you look at U2, one of the biggest bands in the world, playing at AAMI Stadium . . . 60,000 people, they were very happy with the venue, as have a lot of the acts that have been down there," Mr Hunt said.
"We've never had a problem with outside venues here.
"AAMII Stadium has been used successfully on a number of highly successful tours, and likewise Adelaide Oval has been used successfully."
The record crowd at AAMI Stadium was 80,000 for Robbie Williams in 2006.
Mr Hunt, the promoter behind Pink's upcoming mammoth Australian tour, said there were a number of factors behind why bands skip Adelaide.
"It just depends on circumstances. It depends on the band, the timing, the tour schedule. Occasionally we do miss out on shows over here."
The tour announcement caps off a bumper year for Coldplay.
Their fourth album, Viva La Vida (or Death And All His Friends), was released in June and sold millions worldwide. A deluxe edition of the album – Viva La Vida: Prospekt's March, with eight new tracks – is released in Australia this weekend.

Hot, Cold, unsatisfied
CHRIS Martin has given himself a deadline.
Despite selling millions of albums, packing stadiums the world over and winning countless awards, the Coldplay frontman is concerned about his legacy. At only 31, Martin fears he may be nearing his peak as a musician and songwriter.
"We feel that we have to do a lot for 2010," Martin says."We feel like bands need to fill their first 10 years, so we have got lots to do before the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2009. I know it is kind of stupid, but that is kind of our deadline. We have to do something good by then."
It is astounding to hear Martin speak with such little self-assurance.
He is one of the world's most recognisable singers and is married to Hollywood actor Gwyneth Paltrow.
Coldplay's fourth album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends was released in June and was voted the year's top-selling album at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo this month. The album went to No.1 in more than 36 countries, including Australia, where it sat top for four weeks.
From the outside, everything appears to be perfect. But Martin sounds anxious about the passing of time and is determined to achieve more. The musicians he most admires did their best work in their first decade together -- most notably U2.
"We've done some pretty good stuff, but there is something about the year changing to 2010 and also, in that year I will be 33 and I always feel that that is a different phase of song-writing," he says.
"So I just try to keep as busy as possible until then. I can't explain it, but I guess most of my heroes did most of their great stuff before they were 33. It's not that you can't do great stuff afterwards, you have just got to have deadlines otherwise you will spend all day in the sauna."
Martin is speaking from Atlanta to announce Coldplay's Australian tour for February and March.
The band is touring the US, before heading to Europe and will have played 103 shows by the time it reaches Australia next February.
Coldplay shows are massive and its latest tour is no exception.
"It is a big show," Martin says.
"It is not as big as a Rolling Stones show, but it is not as little as a Tom Waits show. It is hopefully somewhere in between."
Visually, Coldplay has gone for a military theme with its latest album.
The band -- Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Martin -- wear military attire for the album artwork, promotional images, video clips and concerts.
The inspiration was born at Coldplay's London headquarters, an old warehouse they call The Bakery, which has been transformed into a creative space for art and music.
"We just had this idea about a year ago of trying to destroy our own thing and put something else in place so it was our little inner band revolution," Martin says.
"Then we started looking at the French Revolution and all of the paintings from that time. All of us were just keen to do something that we felt we hadn't done before."
C OLDPLAY is undeniably one of the biggest bands of the decade and has been compared with its idols, U2.
Since releasing its first album in 2000 (Parachutes), it has sold more than 30 million albums and has had huge global hits with songs including Yellow, In My Place, Clocks, Fix You and Violet Hill. That's not to mention the accolades -- four Grammys and six Brit Awards. But when it comes to talking seriously about the band's successes, Martin uncomfortably jokes.
He clearly isn't comfortable with praise. It is kind of refreshing when you consider the egos of other stars such as Kanye West, who blogs endlessly about his achievements.
Again, it is a little surprising to hear that lack of confidence in Martin's voice.
"We are well aware that we are only the biggest band at the moment because U2 are still on holiday," he says. "We don't think of ourselves as being -- we are not as bad as people who hate us say we are and we are not as good as people who give us awards say we are. We try to keep it balanced."
Coldplay is such an enormous earner for record label EMI that the company's share price took a beating in the UK when the band delayed the release of its previous album, X&Y.
Martin has spoken openly about the pressure that has put on him, but appears to have relaxed about the financial side of the music business.
"I tried getting wrapped up in it for a while and really thinking about business, but it really didn't fit as a hat to be wearing," he says.
"If people are singing along and our record isn't in the bargain bin, then I don't worry about anything. If I stop at a gas station and our record is free with a can of Coke, then I will start to worry."
Viva La Vida has only been out a few months and Martin is working on new material, releasing a special edition of the album with eight new songs.
Martin has been a strong critic of outgoing US President George W. Bush and said he had been inspired musically by the political changes in the US. He says he has never felt more political than when Barrack Obama was voted into power.
"I just feel much more hopeful about things," he says, adding his election had inspired new songs.
"The reason why I find Barrack Obama inspiring, not because of what he says, but he is tireless. I just have so much respect for people who never give up and he, to me, is the definition of that."
Coldplay plays Rod Laver Arena on March 3-4. Tickets on sale December 4 on 132 849. Prospekt's March EP is out now.

Clocks ticking for Coldplay
CHRIS Martin has given himself a deadline. Despite selling millions of albums, packing stadiums the world over and winning countless awards, Martin is concerned about his legacy.
At 31, the Coldplay frontman fears that he may be nearing his peak as a musician and a songwriter.
"We feel we have to do a lot for 2010,'' Martin told Insider with a tone of urgency, almost as if he had to jump off the phone and get back to the studio to work on new songs.
"We feel bands need to fill their first 10 years, so we have lots to do before the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2009.
"I know it's kind of stupid, but that's kind of our deadline. We have to do something good by then.''

"So I just try to keep as busy as possible till then. I can't explain it, but I guess most of my heroes did most of their great stuff before they were 33.
"It's not that you can't do great stuff afterwards. You just have to have deadlines, otherwise you'll spend all day in the sauna.''
Martin was speaking exclusively from Atlanta to announce Coldplay's Australian tour for February and March.
A notoriously difficult interviewee, he was uncharacteristically candid with Insider during our early-morning interview - perhaps because he felt guilty about the time difference and the fact the interview had been pushed back three hours.
Coldplay are touring America before heading to Europe. They will have played 103 shows by the time they reach Australia next February.
And they've upgraded from entertainment centres to stadiums and arenas. In Sydney, they will perform two shows at Sydney's Acer Arena.
"It's a big show. Not as big as a Rolling Stones show, but not as little as a Tom Waits show. It's hopefully somewhere in between,'' Martin says.
Creatively, Coldplay have gone for a military theme with their latest album.
The band - Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Martin - wear military attire for the album artwork, promotional images, video clips and concerts.
"We had this idea about a year ago of trying to destroy our own thing and put something else in place so it was our own little inner band revolution,'' Martin says.

coldplay <3, I totally agree! I am so excited to see them, I'd pay anything.
It does suck about the Adelaide 'snubbing' -- I would be mortified if they skipped Melbourne (of course, that's very unlikely, but you understand my point...) -- you get yourself hyped up, and then this happens? Not. Cool. :(
I really hope the petition works for you guys. If it was successful in '06, I think you might have a fairly good chance at changing some minds... ;)
Focusing of ticket prices/ seating arrangements -- please! Hurry up and release it all. I want to know the seating set-up and cost for Rod Laver Arena. We need to be informed. Anyone want to make an educated guess as to when we'll be privy to that information?
I understand the estimated ticket price was around $145 for GA, and that Reserved Seating was said to be just under the $100 mark...? Suppose we'll find out soon enough.

Chugg Entertainment today confirmed that Coldplay would return to Australia next February on their “Viva La Vida” tour, in support of their new album of the same name.
In a rare move for the Australian market, Coldplay will go on-sale with two shows in each of the East Coast cities to ensure as many tickets as possible are made available to meet the demand that was set the last time they toured.
The four-city jaunt will kick off on Friday 27 February at the Burswood Dome in Perth, travel to Melbourne for two shows on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 March, and then move on to Brisbane at the Entertainment Centre on Sunday 8 and Monday 9 March. The tour finishes up at Sydney’s Acer Arena on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 March.
On their last concert tour of Australia in June 2006, Coldplay sold out a total of ten arenas shows, playing to more than 100,000 people, garnering rave reviews and leaving rapturous fans in their wake.
For all shows, a special Visa Entertainment pre-sale starts at 9am local time on Thursday 27 November; tickets go on sale to the general public via Ticketek on Thursday 4 December. Ticket details are available at www.ticketek.com.au or 132 849.
In time for the anticipated tour announcement, EMI has just yesterday released Coldplay’s Viva La Vida - Prospekt’s March edition. The two-disc deluxe package includes Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, the band’s fourth full-length album, plus a brand new EP entitled Prospekt’s March. The EP, which will also be for sale separately, includes six recently-completed songs that the band had begun recording during the Viva La Vida sessions and brand new versions of two album tracks – Lost + (featuring Jay-Z) and Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun mix). Viva La Vida was released in June 2008 and went on to chart at No. 1 in 36 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Hi guys!
I'd like to fly down to Australia next year for the concerts. I don't think I can drag any of my friends along; I don't know anyone as crazy over Coldplay as me :\ I was hoping if I could meet up with some Coldplayers here for the concert (and maybe some stalking if you're up to it :nice:).
I don't have much leave (or money :P), so I'd prob be going for 1 or 2 gigs only. So would anyone be so nice as to guide me around your city?
Samiya

Hey!
I really want to go to the concert on the 11th or the 12th doesnt really bother me HOWEVER i would really like to purchase presale tickets but i dont know how to get the PRE-SALE CODE or where to get it from....
Does anyone know where and how i can get the code for the pre-sale on thursday??
PLEASE!
thnx =)

but a dream, which Australian city are you planning on coming over to?
Samiya, there isn't a code per-say; you need a VISA Card to participate in the pre-sale (keep in mind it is an internet pre-sale), so I'm assuming it's basically first in, best dressed...
...you use the VISA Card to purchase your tickets; whether you're successful or not relies on the fact of how many tickets they are releasing, and how quickly they go.
So really, you just need to have your Internet Page & VISA ready and waiting for the 9.00a.m pre-sale. Hope that clears things up a bit -- and Good Luck. :D

No problem -- glad I could help out. :D
I would also suggest keeping an eye on the Ticketek (http://premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx?sh=VISAENTE05) site; just in case further details/instructions/changes are released -- it is possible that a code is needed to complete the transaction, so be sure to have all bases covered! ;)
We're still wating on official ticket prices, seating arrangements etc., so I'm assuming that clearer instructions will be made available in the next couple of days...

hi, does anyone know anything about the quality of the pre-sale tickets?
I'm just wondering if I'm better off waiting until the general release to get them
I guess if it's GA then it doesnt matter, but if it's fully seated i want to get the best seats possible of course
Anyone booked a pre-sale before?

-liams-, I think it's a pretty fair bet to say that it will be a limited assortment of both GA and Reserved Seating.
The best thing you can do is get on the Ticketek site ASAP (when full details are released) and see whats on offer.
I haven't purchased Pre-Sale tickets before, so that's all I have to offer. :)
Best of luck to you... :D

Can they just release the prices already?! Honestly, releasing this news a few days before the pre-sale date and not including pricing is kinda ridiculous. I mean people need to have fair warning etc. Anyway, what's done is done - I just wanna know how much we're talking here. Last Aus concert, the Brisbane tickets were $130 I think. A fair price I suppose so I'm hoping they don't push it beyond $150 because that would definitely be ridiculous lol.
^^ I was wondering about the pre-sale code too since that's how they conducted it last time though what was written ^ is pretty spot on, you just need a Visa card. It's going to be a mad rush on Thursday, I can feel it already! :O

Any city, really.

thef1re -- Yep. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that it'll be 'First In, First Serve' regarding the GA tickets (well, for all of them actually).

Thank goodness ticket prices are up. Now my dilemma is who the hell to go with! My friends like CP but not enough to pay $110-140 to see them. Any Brisbane Coldplayers here? If only Annie and Josh weren't Melbourneans haha, come to the sunny state already! :P

Actually, I saw Crowded House last year at Rod Laver and it was 100% seating - floor included. I also believe that The Eagles and Billy Joel were similar too. But for an act like Coldplay who are targeted toward younger audiences like ourselves (20 to 30) i'd imagine they'd go for standing.

I don't know how fast they sold out last tour but I wouldn't try to get tickets over the internet or phone. Its too hard to get in and too many things can go wrong. The old fashioned way still works the best, at least your fate is in your own hands to a greater degree. If you care enough about getting tickets to get up exta early and get a good spot in the ticket line, you should be fine. Also, I usually try to find an outlet that is in the suburbs, its usually less busy than one in the CBD or an arena.
But in the end, the earlier you get there the better chance you have of getting tickets. Atleast there is a line.... there isn't one on the internet or phone, everyone starts from the same spot.

I'm so going to have to convince my dad to try and stand in a line for a bit and book
oh well..the pre sale was just 20minutes before my exam paper but still i was so determined to buy! so i bought them from my uni library! i logged in to ticketek at 8am haha.and kept on logging in back when my time was up..
and i even have a friend standing by at home just in case i didnt get to buy the ticket or if the internet is slow..turned out that it was just fine! when my ticket was confirmed i wanted to scream but it was in the library..
so i went to my exam with coldplay playing in my mind all the time..and when finally the paper was over i went out of the building and scream! haha sorry i'm rambling :P

TwistedCLOCKS -- saw your post in the 'Aussies...bought ur ticket?' thread, and yeah, as well as the 1st show, I'm going to the concert on the 4th, too.
So, best way to buy tickets is to go and physically purchase them from an retailer?
Doing that would make me feel far more confident and secure regarding actually getting tickets, so I guess I'll see some of you lined up and waiting on December 4th -- I'll be the one first in line at the Chadstone Newsagent... :P
i thought of doing the same too..lining up early in the morning for the tickets.

Yeah, well it was always my plan, but then the pre-sale...
I just really wanted to secure tickets for the 1st night, and I got tickets exactly where I wanted them, so I'm incredibly happy about that!
For March 4th, though, I was still clarifying all the details, and just decided I would go and physically buy my GA tickets. If I'm first in line (or close to), there will be no reason for me to miss out (that I can see -- I know it can happen, though).
And it'll also ease my mind a little, knowing that I'll have done my best to get crap/good/great/whichever tickets! ;)
(Forgot to add; even if it doesn't work out for people (me), eBay will be a god!)

Sign the petition here (http://www2.advertiser.com.au/comps_cms/coldplay_petition.html)
Coldplay might be giving Adelaide the cold shoulder on its 2009 tour, but plenty of 'AdelaideNow' readers are warming to our petition to change the band's mind, report news.com.au.
Since last Sunday more than 1000 people have signed our online petition to bring the English supergroup to Adelaide. The response comes after last week's announcement that the band would not include South Australia in its 2009 tour.
Instead, Coldplay will only play dates in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne when they visit in February and March. A schedule clash with High School Musical Live, on at the Entertainment Centre from February 28 to March 8, means the band could only play in Adelaide after its final Australian concert in Sydney on March 12. But a spokeswoman for touring company Chugg Entertainment said there were no plans to add Adelaide to Coldplay's schedule, despite the band playing the Entertainment Centre on its 2006 tour.
Readers on the AdelaideNow messageboards were irate when the Sunday Mail broke the news last week. "I go to plenty of concerts each year, but I can't be the only one buying tickets. I can't go interstate to see them. It is a shame but, hopefully, signing the petition will work," wrote Carl of Prospect. "This honestly breaks my heart! My fav band and have been for 10 years. I'll be in Melbourne without a doubt," wrote Nick of Henley.
But not everyone was convinced a petition was worth the effort. "Is there a petition I can sign to keep them OUT of Adelaide?" wrote Bianca of Adelaide. Facebook users have also come out in support of the petition, with a "Bring Coldplay to Adelaide" group attracting more than 800 members.

Stars axe tours as dollar drops
SUPERSTARS Madonna, Neil Diamond and Paul McCartney have scrapped Australian tour plans due to the weak dollar.
Madonna had agreed to multiple dates at Docklands Stadium in late January.
Tickets for her shows, presented by US tour giant Live Nation and local promoter Michael Coppel, were due to go on sale two weeks ago.
Madonna planned to charge a top price of $400.
"It got as close as anything ever gets," a tour industry source said.
"Madonna was coming to Australia, the dates were resolved, but then the economics got in the way."
Mr Coppel yesterday confirmed the Madonna deal, but refused to elaborate.
It adds to a growing list of tour plans postponed by the world's biggest stars.
Concert industry sources say Diamond, McCartney, The Eagles, Green Day and Metallica have put visits on hold because of the weak economy. Promoter Michael Chugg said: "It's unknown territory at the moment. A lot of tours went on sale before the dollar crashed.
"I think we are only starting to see the affect of the economy on the tour industry."
Mr Coppel said the weak dollar had made promoters, and touring stars, cautious.
"Everyone is feeling their way," he said.
"The risk level has gone up substantially for US-based acts because our dollar is 35 per cent down from where it was three months ago.
"A lot of us have been caught out on deals that don't make any sense. You can sell out a tour and still lose a seven-figure sum."
There are exceptions.
Mr Chugg, promoting Coldplay in March, said the right acts would always do well.
Mr Coppel is also promoting US singer Pink, who has broken box office records and has 11 nights at Rod Laver Arena.
But he warned the weak dollar and exchange rate would push ticket prices up.
Madonna last visited Australia in 1993 and has bypassed the country with each subsequent tour.

After much umming and arring ahmm flying to Melbourne for the show on the 3rd. Picked up some gold seated seats (Section 7 Row A woohoo!) on the Chugg pre-sale. COLDPLAY have announced a third Melbourne concert - before the first two have even gone on sale.
The British band will now perform at Rod Laver Arena on March 3, 4 and 5 next year.
All tickets go on sale at 9am tomorrow from Ticketek, priced between $120 and $140.
Promoter Michael Chugg said seeing the intense demand from an early pre-sale of selected tickets prompted the multiple shows.
"We decided that we needed to add these extra shows now so that the fans know there will be tickets available for them tomorrow," Chugg said.

And I am bloddy buggered. I may have over-budgeted time -- I got to Chaddy at 3 o' clock in the morning, and NO ONE else even arrived at 6am to collect their line number. Hehe, by the time I was actually able to purchase my tickets (after spending almost 6 hours there), there were only 17 number holders in the line.

Grammy Nominated Band to Play 11 Australian Shows
Coldplay is coming back to Australia to perform 11 arena shows only. The band which has a huge fan base here has added an additional four shows to the original schedule.
The tour kicks off on February 27th in Perth and wraps in Sydney on 15th March. Coldplay’s Australian label EMI has reported more than 120,000 tickets were snapped up in record time for the band’s first Australian tour since 2006. And there are still tickets available for those die-hard fans who don’t mind sitting up in the gods.
The last time Coldplay toured Australia in 2006 the band performed ten shows and entertained more than 100,000 fans.
Viva La Vida
The launch of Coldplay’s Australian tour coincided with the release of Viva La Vida - Prospekt’s March edition - a two-disc deluxe package which includes Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, plus a brand new EP entitled Prospekt’s March. Prospekt's March includes six recently-completed songs that the band had begun recording during the Viva La Vida sessions and brand new versions of two album tracks – Lost + (featuring Jay-Z) and Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun mix).
The album Viva La Vida has topped the charts in Australia, the UK and US. Critics have remarked it is the band’s most experimental musical outing to date, but still carries the Coldplay stamp.
Coldplay Nominated for 7 Grammy Awards
Coldplay’s Australian tour is boosted by the announcement the band is in the running for seven Grammy Awards this year -
Record of the Year - Viva La Vida (from Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends)
Album of the Year - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
Song of the Year - Viva La Vida
Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals - Viva La Vida
Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals - Violet HIll
Best Rock Song - Violet Hill
Best Rock Album - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
Chris Martin says Australia is an Exotic Treat
In an interview with Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin said the reason they hadn’t toured to Australia for three years was a matter of perfection.
“For us, touring in your country is kind of exotic, so we feel like it’s kind of a treat. So we wait until we feel like we deserve to go to Australia. We don’t like to play in Australia until we’ve perfected our concert.”
Those fans lucky enough to have scored a ticket, and who live within access of the four tour cities – Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth – will be in for a treat if Martin’s words are any indication.
However, not all Coldplay fans are happy with those in Adelaide snubbed by this tour schedule. Rumours have it that there isn’t a comparable arena venue in Adelaide, although promoter Michael Chugg puts the omission down to a simple case of the band’s availability.
Coldplay Australian Tour Dates
Friday 27 February - Perth, Burswood Dome
Saturday 28 February - Perth, Buswood Dome
Tuesday 3 March - Melbourne, Rod Laver Arena
Wednesday 4 March - Melbourne, Rod Laver Arena
Thursday 5 March – Melbourne, Rod Laver Arena
Sunday 8 March - Brisbane, Entertainment Centre
Monday 9 March - Brisbane, Entertainment Centre
Wednesday 11 March - Sydney, Acer Arena
Thursday 12 March - Sydney, Acer Arena
Saturday 14 March - Sydney, Acer Arena

Well the venue in Adelaide has been free'd up due to the cancellation of a long running show that had it booked out for a month. Unfortunately, looking at their schedule, I don't think they'd be able to fit Adelaide in. The biggest gap is between Perth and Melbourne but only two days and honestly I don't think there would be time to get the stage up and down and to Melbourne in time. Thankfully I'm able to get to Melbourne for the March 3rd show, but it would've been awesome to go to an Adelaide one too. Maybe if they come out early they'd be able to fit an Adelaide show in, but somehow I don't see it happening.
