Coldplay in concert

One of the many privileges of living in Tokyo is the opportunity to see great bands in concert. I haven't attended big concerts for quite a while; the main reason being living literally in the middle of nowhere for the past seven years. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard several months ago that Coldplay—one of my favorite bands—was coming to Tokyo and that some people I know were planning to get tickets. I have been following Coldplay since their very first album "Parachutes", which is by the way still my favorite one, and I have enjoyed every album ever since. But, for some reason, I never got the chance to see them live; mainly because I didn't know anybody crazy enough—or fan enough—to drive several hours to reach the nearest city where they would play.
The above photo was taken during the song "Lovers in Japan" (from their latest album) and, as you can guess from the title, they went all in to please the Japanese audience. The most memorable moment was the surprising explosion of thousands of butterfly-shaped bright papers that fell on us. It's my favorite picture because I think it captures well the excitement we all felt then.
I have to admit that I was slightly surprised by the response from the Japanese audience. This is my first concert in Japan, so I did not expect to see such a calm public. Whereas in Western countries you are likely to be smashed by the crowd if you bravely decide to stand very close to the stage, here it's quite more civilized and less violent. Sure, there was a rush towards the front when Chris Martin first appeared on stage, but that was the only time I had to struggle to keep up with the crowd. It seems Japanese people are not so effusive when it comes to concerts—or anything else actually. While waiting for the concert to start, the environment was quite calm, only disturbed a few times by some shouts probably coming from other impatient foreigners in the arena. The emotion was not quite there during the songs either as I sometimes felt we were the only ones jumping and singing in the crowd. Personally, I prefer to attend concerts surrounded by excited fans; my best concert memories often involve very enthusiastic crowds. This experience, however, is only my first one in Japan, and I shouldn't generalize before attending more concerts. Who knows, I might get surprised next time... or just smashed against the front fence!
I should mention that the advantage of such a nice crowd is how close we could get to the stage.

Great photos! I always remember when a life-sized chocolate David Beckham was unveiled in Tokyo (Shibuya I think it was). You've never seen so many mobile phone cameras all fighting for space!
Thanks a lot for the review Jenjie :) Though I wondered when the first one by a foreigner would pop up criticising the Japanese crowds :\ In my experience they're great when a band have a fanatical follwing (as Coldplay do). They're less aggressive and rude than English crowds that's for sure, I know which country I'd rather be standing near the front in!
At the same time I've watched all the vids and the crowd on the floor were going nuts from what I could see  I suggest if the writer wasn't impressed by the energy he never sees the band in London :laugh3:
It must be awesome in Japan. For us Europeans ist must be so exotic... I mean just look at Chris... he looks like a giant tub of ice-cream with a cute, little umbrealla on the top...
