View Full Version : Why does Hollywood think you're gay if you like Coldplay?
Galaga

First it was The 40-year-old Virgin. Just now I saw a commercial for the tv show Bones where a male character is considered gay for asking a female if she would accompany him to a CP show. I know they're just jokes and there's nothing wrong with being gay if that's you're thing but, where do they get off?
Discuss.

As I've said before, how is it even an insult??

People are just immature and think anyone who listens to softer music is gay. I think in 40-Year Old Virgin it was okay cuz it's a movie and movies make fun of all kinds of things. But when people quote the movie just to call me gay, well, that annoys me cause people like that give Coldplay a bad reputation.

Because, frankly, Hollywood is getting stupider and stupider, and there's very little people these days with some intelligence.
I can understand how it's in movies and stuff, but when people are ignorant enough in real life to say it to me it gets really old really fast.

Never was.
Maybe if they referenced Indigo Girls.

The only reason they use Coldplay's name is because they're a band that is extremely successful and makes MoR music that appeals across the board and not only to 18-30 year old men.

It's crazy talk.I don't see how Coldplay is more likely to attract gay people than any other band.Whatever, you know, at least their name appears in a movie.I don't know for me Coldplay is a good example of the kind of music you find in Europe.I grew up in France and Germany with this kind of music coming from Britain. And I love it.Maybe American bands are not supposed to be that way or are supposed to be more rock n' roll. Can't stand Fall Out Boy and the likes though :P bbaaahhhh

I think so too...they simple call any male gay cuz what? 75% of the fans is female? Well maybe not 75% but the majority sure is. Gimme one reason why straight men cant enjoy CP. I find that shit offensive even if its meant to be a joke.

Yeah, I find it funny how people who listen to punk bands of guys who wear make-up can call Coldplay gay.
Because Coldplay doesn't have any obvious or major flaws, but they're really popular and need to be made fun of, so they get made fun of in incredibly stupid ways. I mean, "gay" isn't even an insult, it's just an inaccurate description. :P
Also, somewhat more of their fans are female, and most (straight) people have this weird idea that gay men are feminine.
It's really dumb and annoying, but not worth worrying about.

Because supposedly Coldplay's fanbase is mostly women. They seem to appeal to the sensitive/thoughtful side of people.
But seriously, that joke's kind of disrespectful to both gay and straight people. Music isn't supposed to have a color/gender/sexuality. It's supposed to be enjoyed by everyone. :nice:

Why?!
I have a lot of friends (male) who like Coldplay and they never will be gay and say they like Coldplay! Mmm... To be "not gay" you must like Metallica or AC/DC...?!
And Jonas Brothers?! hahaha (soooooo cuties.........)
And Tokyo Hotel?! I don't know if the singer is a boy or a girl... :dozey:

This is the most stupid thing I've heard. I mean why the hell should people suddenly be gay if they listen to Coldplay? Doesn't make any sense at all, it's two very different things.

In 40 Year Old Virgin it was a joke. I get it. Judd Apatow is awesome!
However, WHY IS GAY STILL AN INSULT ANYWAY??? How is it that people are still so intolerant and filled with hate that saying something is "gay" is somehow a putdown. As a heterosexual female this always baffled me. What makes something "gay"? Its a silly label given by small minded and insecure people. Coldplay writes and performs good quality music and NO ONE should feel ashamed for liking them.

Hmm.. Well, Hollywood is stuck on the cult of image; men are supposed to be macho brawny types; women portrayed as the smart but petite, sensitive types. It's their formula, and they can't deal with real people. So, if you're sensitive, you're seen as gay by Hollywood's standards. To hell with Hollywood's warped view of the world! (oops - that's wasn't very sensitive!:laugh3:). I often wonder, if the Beatles were a new sensation today, how would Hollywood perceive them? Hmm.. Well, Coldplay's style is sensitive at times, but hard-driven at others.. Perhaps it's that movie - once a stereotype is set, it's a label that gets used like a broken record. But, true, more to the point - who cares what Hollywood thinks? And besides, looking at artists like Elton John, the music is universal, and Hollywood seems to not mind a bit using his music in all sorts of movies..

What if they had instead said,
"You know how I know you're black? Because you like Lil Jon."
Imagine the outrage.

Hollywood daily depicts an "ideal" lifestyle that I would never have anything to do with. The same goes for their ideas on music, I could give a @#%$ what Hollywood thinks is acceptable. And judging by the millions of people who have been buying coldplay albums over the years I don't think I'm alone.

i cant see how songs like Politik, Clock, Viva La Vida, Violet Hill and most of the other Coldplay songs are gay. oh please.
but if it's so, then i dont mind at all falling in love with gay-ish songs!

It must be because of the falsetto. Maybe that's why Chris switched to a lower register for VLV.
Seriously though, I pretty much agree with everyone's response here. I just found it amusing that a show bit a lame joke from a movie. But it is quite ridiculous to get upset over something like this. We all love Coldplay and don't care what people think and that's that. Period.

Right down to the bottom of it, Hollywood is run by a bunch of conservative people. No matter how "unique" you are, you still must abide to the so-called standards (women being beautiful and submissive, men being masculine and tough, etc etc).
(Case in point, just look at the '05 Oscars..."Crash" beat out "Brokeback Mountain" for Best Picture, and quite an amount of supporters for the winning flick voted for it because the opposing film was too "homo" :dozey: )

yeah this is basically bull shit, but when apatow says it you guys know its sarcasm, smart people don't actually believe this. i think when it starts getting used its just cause its one of those jokes people think won't every get old...well they're wrong.
the fact that chris martin is married to a very beautiful hollywood actress should basically tell you that sensitive guys aren't gay. you can be straight and like coldplay.
it always annoyed me when people said to me, "oh you're gay, you like coldplay." well those idiots all like coldplay now, so i got the last laugh.
and yes, i find it funny that these insults come from hollywood, which i can only imagine has a large homosexual base. i'm not surprised the average idiot would say that, but i think thats part of the joke coming from hollywood, that idiots say things like that.
so im not really worrying.

From what I've read so far, there's been a lot of blame thrown on Hollywood, but I think it runs deeper than that. I think it's society as a whole that should be blamed. Obviously not everyone, because if there's one absolute, it's that there are no absolutes. If we didn't live in a close minded world, qualities such as sex, race, religion, sexuality, etc. wouldn't be an issue and jokes about these subjects wouldn't appeal to anyone. And I'm not sure how to fix that just yet.

gay is beeing used in too many situations. I admit i have said the word at times to represent something as being bad. But if someones making fun of someones real sexual orientation thats just dirty

The stereotype is that guys are not in touch with their feelings and don't talk about them, and girls are all about feelings. The reality is that there are guys out there who are sensitive to their feelings and others' feelings, and girls who are just cold-hearted and hard-hearted.
The fact that Coldplay's lyrics acknowledge human hurts, human loves, and everything in between the two extremes makes them an easy target for people who like stereotypes.
As for the "gay" label, anyone who implies that being gay is the equivalent of being feminine hasn't run into some of the guys I've seen marching in pride parades!

To be sensitive is to let your guard down, and to have compassion for others. Hollywood's film formula is most often not built around compassion, that's for sure! It's just a stupid phobic mentality, juvenile in it's origins. Half the world's problems (if not more) could be attributed to the lack of sympathy and empathy; all the machismo in the world isn't going to solve the poverty issues, or empower those in need - but Hollywood's still in a juvenile state of mind very often, and as the old saying goes, "the full belly doesn't feel for the empty". So the assertive, aggressive, self-assured and selfish types are often intolerant of compassionate humans, as this knocks loose their fantasy world that they try and build up around the cult of ego (..or am I getting too deep here?). Imagine how different the world would be, or even could be, if the machismo war cult were held in check, and civilized discussions and diplomacy held reign over the globe? Just my wild opinions, but it seems we could use a larger dose of compassion, and the Brutus types in Rome/Hollywood who are against Coldplay have ruled the world in a most unfortunate way for the past few years..
