View Full Version : Anyone only like certain parts of 42?

This one was a bit of a let down for me.

I really like Part 1, don't care much for Part 2 (sounds like a spinoff version of Go to Sleep guitar riffs), and Part 3 I really don't like.. I think it sucks to be honest. I wish I could like this song in its entirety, but it's just not working for me. don't think this one quite works like a 3 part epic they had intended it to be. It starts off so well, and I don't know what happens in the middle and in the end. So much for going slightly experimental (within the realm of Coldplay world)

I'm not understanding the hype around this song myself. It's very odd. The first minute has a nice sound, except the lyrics make me go  Then it shifts gears and features a string section, which doesn't agree with me at all (the subtle dissonance makes me cringe)

third part has lyrics that make me go  again

so in picture form, this song makes me go :veryangry::confused:

The middle section sounds like something off an action game.

the beginning and last parts of the song are awesome :)

you can really hear the John lennon influences in the song

Exactly, that weird action game sound. that's what i said, it's all pixel sounding gamer-esque sound...

the beginning and last are good. Though the lyrics do get tiring after a while....

most songs of this album have this structure:
slow-rhytm-slow

i like how it goes, but that all songs have the same structure is not good....

and btw i think that the lyrics and music fits, slow when lyrics are 'sad', rhytmical when not.

may be that is too basic but...

anyways i think that they will improve it live :D
and what i was most curious about this song were the whole lyrics more than how it would sound to be honest.

42 is god awful. Really. The guitar solo at the end is okay. This song and Yes, which were the two most hyped songs dissapointed me the most. BUT THE REST OF THE ALBUM IS FANTASTIC. AMAZING

That's what I thought - the piano on the first two verses, is it just me or does it sounds a lot like Imagine..?

i think this song played out in three songs would make more sense, but as one it kind of masses into this weird mix of like, water, milk and oil. It doesn't really mix, but i kind of love the weirdness. Maybe its the first listen stuff playing on me, but I'm enjoying, if not entirely loving, this experimental nature. I do wish the lyrics more befit the song. Like "You thought you might be a ghost, you didn't get to heaven but you made it close"...that seems like a fucking deadly powerful line, but the way it comes out in the song its catchy. It's weird, but at this moment I enjoy the weirdness.

I like the first part of soft, everyday life sound of the first part. The second part is just plain weird, while the third part is alright, but nothing overly special.

I think the big problem with this song is these 3 parts don't fit together at all. 3-part epics are like a puzzle. Each 3 pieces have to fit together to make one whole song. These just don't.

I like all 3 parts... 42 is the most original song they could ever write... it surprises you changing radically and I just love it for its several moods. I don't see it like a next single cause it's too strange but it's really their masterpiece IMO

Just my personal opinion, but I think the whole opus/masterpiece thing is exaggerated. I just hear it as 3 song ideas glued together as they were too weak to be developed into songs of thier own, so nothing overly special.

Not to say I dont like the song, but given all the hype I was a little letdown.

And I dont think this song would've worked as a single, no matter what the previews said.

definitely not a single...too weird. but yeah, the three parts kind of stick in my head truthfully. this is one of the songs I can't get out of my head, and I'm not mad its there.

this one was a grower for me. first few listens I was like, "wtf are thinking", but after a few more I can appreciate it for its different nature. it seems a throwback to x & y though

you know what i always do when i listen to a new coldplay song? i open up widely inside and try to avoid any kind of judgement. i let the song in and when i don't go in the first time i listen to it another time, and again and again while doing something else. and this way i experienced true wonders when the song suddenly grabs me from behind and i fall into extase in my heart. this way i got a fan of them anyway. five years ago. i listened and listened without any feeling and judgement. and suddenly it took over me like a tide and washed me away.

i also try not to compare. its like youre looking at a painting of whoever and if you only see strokes like picasso and colours like van gogh you can never see the painting in front of you, can you?

and this is what i wanted to say: I LOOOVE 42 now too!!!!!!!!!!

I like all the parts!
it's like a story - first of all there is a quiet piano (symbols death=silent)
on the second part it goes wild because the "dead people" are living in his head so it sound really live and loud
and the last part is a closing part of the song

i like the arrangment of the song so that i can understand the lyrics

I really really like the first part and I donīt mind the lyrics either....the radioesque mid part is not really my fav bit but it does not last long enough to bother cuz then the third part kicks in and it is quite pleasant. I also do like this song because it is weird and different, however, like other songs on the album, it gives me the feeling of being a collection of tasters/samples rather than a fully developed song. Whether that was the intention or whether itīs just an impression I have I donīt know but it DOES make for a different listening...

it's almost painful for me to listen to the part when chris sings

You thought you might be a ghost
You thought you might be a ghost
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close

Ahhh this part is so frightfully horrible it makes me cry inside because it could have been a simple, lovely song. The Radiohead-esque middle part sounds too Radiohead-esque but it does not bother me as much as the 3rd part. After I listen to the first part I have to FF it or else I die a little

I think it is very good but not the best song on the album (that is either Yes or Viva La Vida) but I love the bit at the end where he says You thought you might be a ghost
You thought you might be a ghost
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close

but everyone has their own opinions! :)

This song reminds me sooo much of that Paul McCartney song...Live or Let Die.

That plus the ghost part make me dislike this song a lot. The first CP song that I vehemently don't like, as opposed to "I dont care much for it."

Will's drumming in the "You thought you might be a ghost.." bit (or 3:10 to 3:23) reminds me a lot of "Barely Legal" by the Strokes.
it's almost the same thing haha

I think that ghost bit excellent though. It's perfectly catchy and melodic, very energetic,
especially when the guitar comes in and echoes Chris' singing at 3:10
it's perfect. hardly anything wrong with it.

This is my favorite song on the album -- honestly.
It's been stuck in my head for two days now.

The lyrics at the beginning are so insanely strange that I'm a fan!

"Those who are dead are not dead, but just living in my head."

WTF is wrong with people:stunned:. I love this freakin song. Viva la Vida is still probably my favorite song overall, but I really love "42". The transition is awesome in my opinion and gets me hyped like hell:D, im shakin my head and tappin my feet and stuff. And ohh, " You thought cha might be a ghooost, you thought cha might be a ghoooost, you didn't get to heaven but cha made it close, you didn't get to heaven but cha made it close." I absolutely love that part, and I'm always singin it, and the guitar solo rocks like hell as well. The song ends quite nice and peacefully. 10/10...:)

The three parts is a great initiative, all so contrasting but seem to blend in so well. I didnt like it at first but it has grown on me and is one of my favourites on the album.

The first and third "parts," and especially the ending, are the best bits; the middle is a bit too much like Radiohead for me, but it works, and since it's only for part of the song I don't mind it.

Also, tauiwi...intentional or not, your avatar is hilarious. :P

But it's not like a hate the beginning. It's a gooood song. :cheesy:

I've only heard this song once, but the first part hit me like a brick. Even with kind of weird lyrics, that part is just gorgeous.
I'm not sure whether I dug the second part or not. I was expecting something rockier, and it went on a little too long for a first listen, but I'm sure it'll grow on me. As for the third part,I do wish the lyrics more befit the song. Like "You thought you might be a ghost, you didn't get to heaven but you made it close"...that seems like a deadly powerful line, but the way it comes out in the song its catchy.describes my feelings exactly. But I still liked it. And the coda with a variation on the opening is amazing too.

P.S. I only felt like there were two parts, personally. The second and third match so well that I lumped them together.

Was this one of the songs where the vocals were recorded in churches? Because there's a beautiful, lonely, reverb to the vocals that I think reflects that. Wonderful.

only the first and last part is effing brilliant. I dont see why the album cant have just one sad song and there always has to be atleast a mixture of 2 different parts in a song.

18-06-2008, 04:51 PM
As far as I can recall, there is only one song, 42, which is a mixture of 2/3 different parts. The others are either only one song or two songs sold as one track, but both independent of each other....

I was just listening to it while working out and I was thinking the same things. I heard the first part in a clip before the album cam out (I actually thought it was Cemeteries of London:laugh3:) and I LOVED it. Then I got the album and heard the rest. Not so great, and like Ive said many times, I think its a little copying of Radiohead.

i'm sorry, but i have to say that i love the first part of 42 with the piano and all.. at first, i really thought the song would be kick ass if it was only piano - and there could be two awesome songs..

but now i am getting used to the change up of the song in the middle.. and i like the whole thing.
