There seems to be a lot of hate for this song, with some people calling it "filler" at best.
Some of us, though, see the song for what it really is - a beautiful, and ultimately necessary, breath of fresh air in the middle of an album full of all sorts of different sounds. Having this lovely lullaby of bells in the center of the album, keeps me from getting overwhelmed by the heavier material.
For those complaining about the over-production of most of the album (an opinion I don't agree with, by the way), why not look to Reign of Love?
---------------
Reign of love
I can’t let go
To the sea I offer
This heavy load
Locust wind
Lift me up
I’m just a prisoner
In a reign of love
Locust wind
....
How I wish I'd spoken up
To a reign of love
Reign of love
By the church, we're waiting
Reign of love
On my knees go praying
How I wish
I'd spoken up
Away get carried
On a reign of love.
Eh Steve!

id rather have more heavy material and be overwhelmed by an amazingly good song instead of having a bad one to get a break
This song is just so pleasant to listen to, i love it!

This and Strawberry Swing are the extreme highlights of an otherwise muddled album. I can't imagine anyone hearing Reign of Love and not realizing how beautiful and effective it is.

i think ROL is another song that needs to grow on me after a while just like COL did (which is one of my faves now)
ROL has a lot of potential....just hasnt amazed me yet....need to give it a few more listens!

Possibly the most beautiful part of the album! I still don't quite understand the lyrics, but hopefully they'll all make sense to me in the end :)

I love Reign Of Love, i think it gives the album a much needed balance amongst the heavily produced tracks that surround it

Gone back for a second listen. It does the same thing to my insides that Pachelbel's Canon in D does. In fact, if I wasn't already married, I'd be walking down the aisle to Reign of Love instead of Pachelbel

i enjoy reign of love, and i think its placement is why people arent considering it any good. i mean it might be the weakest on the album, but that by no means makes it bad. i think its just squashed between two other really good songs, so it doesnt live up to them. but yeah, i do like it quite a bit.

obviously the weakest song in the album / however, its not a bad song - I think itīs a grower like Square One was on X & Y...In some months everybody is going to start loving it!

Personally this is one of my favorite cuts. The piano delay is beautiful. The chord progression is perfect. And its right where it needs to be in the album. It makes a great bridge from Lovers to Yes.
To all you ROL lovers out there, I've got your back! :D

I am really shocked by everyone's dislike for this song. It is classic Coldplay baby!!! Absolutely beautiful piano melody. I think it's great as a bridge, I actually think it might have failed if it were its own stand-alone track. But it reminds me of a lullaby in some way that gives the album an extra kick of variety. While definitely not the greatest track, it is definitely in my top 5 or so. Beautiful in every way!!!

It's very lame. It's not the worst though. The worst song is the escapist.

this song has grown on me
i think you've got to be in a certain mood for this song...but the idea of using this song for when your married doesn't suprise me, its got that feeling

BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM.

It's simple and lovely. I don't know where all the hate is coming from. Reign of Love is a slow break in the middle of fast-paced Lovers and twisted Yes, which I think is a pretty cool juxtaposition.

I just noticed that Reign of Love was the first song (with lyrics, anyway) eliminated in the "Releases Forum" game... Sad.

after a bunch more listens....i like this song. its definitly a nice slow song compared to the rest of the others.
but dont the chimes sound extra? it seems like they tried to squeeze another instrument haha. great song nonetheless.

Oh, this is my personal lullaby at the moment, and I'm not even close to being a person in love, heh.
It's just this beautiful, rippling piece that is taking me by the hand while I'm going through what I'm going through.
It's a very hopeful song.

One of my personal faves on the albums. lyrics are weak sauce, but the arrangement with the keyboards and guitar are wonderful. A real toe-tapper.

I love this song and I seriously can't imagine anyone hating it. Like Jhostle said, its a Coldplay baby. This song is classic Coldplay. The lyrics are still kinda lame except the last verse "How I wish, I'd spoken up. Or we'd be carried away by the reigh of love" beautiful.

Reign of Love is beautiful, emotional, honest. It's like a cuddle from Chris Martin in the middle of "all that noise and all that sound". I liked it and I like it more every day. I don't know what the lyrics mean exactly but I think this could have been written on the day Chris went to a funeral on a boat and he was so exhausted he fell asleep on the way back. I think the song is about loss. Anyone care to explain the lyrics line by line? I think they're rather complicated, not easy at all.
i think it is ace, while there is the big powerful songs like 42 and violet hill, there is this which reminds us how beautiful music can sound from Coldplay, reminds us of Fix You, it tugs at your heart and as I have heard from someone on this forum, it would be great at a wedding!

I really like the whole thing as a track "Lovers In Japan/Reign of Love".
Reign of Love could easily be misconstrued as overly simple, X&Y-style melodrama, but hey, who doesn't like a bit of melodrama every now and again? :P

I absolutely adore this song! Why do so many dislike it?
It's not supposed to be a soaring, epic song. Its beauty lies in its simplicity.
Honestly, it almost moves me to tears...

Listening to Reign of Love without thinking too much about the lyrics it's deeply romantic. I automatically had images of the inside of steel drums shaped into balls reflecting light, butterflies in the air, springtime a overwhelming sense of new beginning and fresh starts. I wrote on the Facebook page that I felt it had a likeness to Plaisir d'amour in parts, I still think that.
Having looked at the lyrics in more detail perhaps there's an element of penance involved with, "To the sea I offer This heavy load" and again repeated with, "My knees go praying". The use of Locusts stumped me at first initially placing them in the biblical sense, but that sharply contrasts with the beauty and purity of this song. Therefore I've now came to the conclusion that it's used in the context of, Plato's Phaedrus were Socrates says that Locusts were once human. Does anyone else agree, or have a different opinion?
I love everything about this song, the music took over my mind.

I love the song. It reminds me of their Parachutes work. Simple, yet powerful. It doesnt need all those sound effects and all that editing, just pure passion and heart.
you know what...this song is really starting to grow on me....

Hey 2732, liked your comment, but sadly it did involve alot of editing, in fact it was the most edited song out of the album. I was just in youtube and listening to the band's insight into each song. They mentioned that they played on for about twenty odd minutes but it had to get chopped down. I'd do anything to hear that 20 odd minute piece... :)

I wish this song went on forever. These are my favorites types of songs...very simple, beautiful delicate melodies, & no big band sound. Don't get me wrong, I love Coldplay's full band big songs just as much as the next fan...but there's nothing better than a really stripped down little song like this to me. I love the combination of piano and those little chimes (or whatever they are). They sort of float along like a river of music. ;)

I don't understand people who hate this brilliant song. I think its amazing and integral part of VLVODAAHF. The best sample of old Coldplay, a certain similarity of Scientist, besides it allows to have a rest from crazy a rhythm of LIJ. I love this song and its incredible to listen it at night under starlight

How can people complain about this being a poor album filler, and not mind Chinese Sleep Chant? That makes no sense to me...
