I adore it. I think it's my favorite on the album, though it's too soon to tell for sure.

It sounds like a Loreena McKennit song- modern but old and celtic, with a great rhythm. And I mean that as the highest compliment I know how to give.

What the heck has happened to Will? :stunned: He's outdone himself on this album!

With the songs we'd first heard I thought

"will is just a one drum man now! - well, with a bell!"

but some of these tracks, the drums lead the songs,
I think eno was right saying this will be the album they're remembered for, in the hearts of coldplay fans anyways!

:D

Not my favorite so far, but definitely the perfect song choice to follow the joyful LIT. I love how the feel of things go from dark to light. Thats what the album sounds like so far...

this was the biggest grower for me. at first i just thought it was cool, but now i think it's in my top 5 songs on the album.

lyrics aren't my favorite, but the music TOTALLY makes up for it. the lalalala part gives me chills.

For some reason I was quite underwhelmed by the song, but now that I "get" it, I think its wonderful. Probably higher than 42 for me. So its about 4th or 5th best on the album :D

It makes me think of that play The Crucible. It's all that talk about witches.
I keep picturing people dancing in the forest around a fire next to a cemetery.
AAAH, this album is so good, I can't pick a favorite! But this is definitely up there.

05-06-2008, 05:09 AM
^ the album was leaked this morning on justin timberlake forums, I love this song, is it me or does the whole album have kind of a darkness to it, its very different from the others. Besides lovers in japan, love doesn't dominate the album like the others(which is why i guess they called the others a trilogy), its more ominous. Cementeries is a great song.

Im absolutely lovin COL (and 42, and LIJ, and Yes ... ) - Johnny's guitar riff sounds exactly the same as Edge's in U2's cover of Tower of Song. Obscure, I know, but I'm a total U2 nut

OK, you read it here first...I BROKE!! I still haven't heard the whole album, but this song literally made me CRY!! I can't get over it!! All the raw purity of Shiver with an older soul!! OMG! I can't call it my favorite since I still am listening to the album a track at a time, but it's beyond perfect!! AHHHHHH!:D:D:D:D:D *not moving on until I hear it again!*

amazing amazing amazing amazing amazing amazing... *runs out of breath* * followed by big deep breath*.... Singing la la la la la la layyyy :D

I cant get enough of it, the whole album is just unreal

I cant wait until i can actually buy the album, so that i may worship it... in the words of homer... mmmmm sacrilicious!

Thank you Chris, Jonny, Guy and Will for showing the world of crap conformist music which has taken hold the last 15 years, how real musicians do it and what real music is all about.

little did i know that what i was hearing back on that june night in '98 would be the beginning of music legends

I love, love, love this song. It's probably one of my favorites on first listen. It's got an eerie, haunting quality to it. Who knew something as simple as lalalalalala laaeey could sound so great?

It reminds me a bit of Kiss From A Rose by Seal. Also reminds me a lot of Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel.

I think it sounds a bit like The House of The Rising Sun by The Animals... My least favourite song in the new album so far :shocked2:

felicote
05-06-2008, 05:31 PM
^ it does!!!! I love House of the rising sun. technically the animals didnt write it though. and Bob dylan recorded it even before they did. and his version is better.

anyways, here is my attempt at the lyrics
there were a couple of words i couldnt figure out
i think this are the best lyrics of any coldplay song

the morning is for sleeping
through the dark streets they go searching
to see god in their own way
save the night time for your weeping
your weeping
singing la la la la la laaeey
and the night over london ????
so we rolled down to the river
with a ???????
further curses to be broken
we go wonder neath the arches
where the witches are (missing??)
there are ghost towns in the ocean
the ocean
singing la la la la la la laaeey
and the night over london ????

god is in the houses
and god is in my head
and all the cemeteries in london
i say god come in my garden
but i dont know what he said
for my ???? wasn't open
not open

singing la la la la la la laaeey
and the night over london (lays???)
singing la la la la la la laaeey
there's no light over london today

In my not-humble-and-fkin'-important opinion, this is the best song EVER, a bit better than "Yes!", the second best song EVER.

I have no words for describing it.

But Cemeteries is such an amazing song... I can't believe how good this whole album is.

Def a solid track. Has a western flare with allusions to "House of the Rising Sun" (as far as cadence and flow), then it rounds out in the chorus with the chanting and a bit of Mariachi Rhythmic clapping. Great song all around.

I love it!
Soooo different, I'm not sure if this is my favorite Coldplay album yet, but you can definitely tell they're heading in a new direction- one that is to be perfected later. Not to be impatient but I really can't wait to hear what the next one is like when they've found their way a bit more smoothly. I definitely wouldn't mind more of this type though.

This may sound insane, but does anyone else hope they DON'T release this as a single? I don't want the radio to play it to death! I want to hear it when I want and experience it live. They shouldn't let radio stations kill this like they did Clocks!! Just my opinion, though...

I think (and hope) you're right! It would be nice to hear it on Album Oriented Radio, but not as a single they play a million times a day...I don't EVER want to get sick of it, and radio kills some of the best music, even though airplay is a band's bread and butter. VH and VLV are great singles, but this should be left for fans only, imo!:D

Me too ;)

...and I still think it sounds like a Loreena McKennit song.

Maybe that's what I love about it...and a few other songs on the album...they combine some of my favorite Folk sounds with my favorite pop band!! I hear CLannad on a Coldplay album, and Loreena too. Who ever thought we'd get this from our boys? It's just...precious...

Eno's 'world music' influence does great things for what ever he touches, and with Coldplay's innate talent, this was going to be a win/win from the start!!:D:D:D

This truly IS an album for everybody!!

Hey, I just realised I read somewhere that they even wrote it the way she does- they were trying to find out if there had ever been witch burnings in the Thames.

...so does this mean they're going to be going off to live with a tribe of Bedouin next album?

I only briefly read the review threads on here, and now that we have the album, that's not going to change. I read the ones that offered some descriptions of songs, but opinions I ignored...we all know what they're like, lol! i love it so much too but every time I see that poll about what is your favourite song I can't decide. I really can't decide. It is so hard. The songs are all so good. I wish they would get rid of that poll it is annoying me. I keeping thinking that everyone is voting away and here is me, not voting and then someone will notice and be like your not a coldplay fan you didn't vote - well that was what my dream was like last night but I feel guilty for not voting.

just heard this song on triple j radio and the host asked people to give feedback on the song. and a very large majority of people loved it. mind you this radio station blatantly refused to play anything off X&Y because they and their listeners hated it soo much. so it seems like songs such as cemetries have won back some of their older alternative music fans.

personally i was very impressed by the song but did find the music slightly repetitive.

For some reason this song gives me a truly joyous feeling! I was writing down some impressions of all songs when listening to the MySpace leak and this absolutely struck me as a beautiful tune and yes the indigenous/latin drums truly characterize the whole album! Also I LOVED the contrast between the gothic/spooky lyrics and the happy music in this song...I truly can´t wait to listen to it in HQ. It is criminal to tease us with leaks and make us suffer until release date :(

P.S. I am new to the forum. Hi guys :)

Hands down my ultimate favourite of the album. Apparently my mother's prepared to strangle me for playing it on blast for the 15th time in a row.

It's kinda eerie....in a good way! :D And I just love when Will's drums kick in in the beginning too. AHHHH :smug: just love it.

And can you imagine actually singing along to this song at a concert?
Magical.

Exactlyyyy. I mean, how they managed to mix the sort of eerie sound of the lyrics with the upbeat tempo of the drums and the guitar? Beautiful.

And Im also new, but hey if it means anything, welcome anyway

This is most definitely the best song on this album, and possibly one of the top 3 CP songs ever IMO. Amazing guitar solo and drum beat and chorus, and the lyrics are awesome.

Doesn't get any better than COL.

This song is so unexplainably beautiful ! The chord progressions in here are so simple but the way Coldplay does it it's amazing...such a beautiful song ! So catchy and wow...

Oops...I got busy this weekend and didn't post on a couple of pages of this thread how much I worship and adore this song...in case you missed it...I kinda lie it,lol.

Jonny's offset guitar makes it for me just as much as Chris's singing and lyrics...and for the musician reading, Guy's little 5 over4 bass line slays me...it's a musical device I use a lot, but never to this effect...I can only dream I'll write a COL someday!:D

cheer up boys.
