Best Coldplay song ever, straight from the first listen. For everyone really, a soft piano part near the start then the hardest rocking coldplay have ever done after the middle :D
Who agrees?
Saffire

I've only listened to it once so far (waiting to get access to my Sennheiser headphones), but from what I remember it was among their best songs ever. It's not nearly as sweeping and epic as the reviews made it seem, but that's not a bad thing at all.
I absolutely loved it.

i love the beginning part a lot, but not so much the latter bit when guitars come in, because the guitar riff reminds me of "go to sleep" which is my least fav. song on radiohead's Hail to the Thief
not to mention the way chris sings one line sounds exactly like "cuttooth" by radiohead

well to give it a try, i think itīs just exactly about what heīs singing... maybe about friends/family members he had lost, but after all he recognized that they are not dead but rather in his head, which means that he remembers them and they are still part of his thoughts. this would fit the part where he sings, since i felt for that spell, i am living there as well.
to go even further, he can kind of communicate with them? or living with them in any kind? i mean realizing them in his daily life...?
and well when he sings that time is short and there must be something more, i think thatīs clear. he could think of life after you die.... i think that is why chris said that you have to hear it before you die. perhaps since its such a strong song.
furthermore many people might think that they are very religious and strive to go to heaven but in the end theyīve just scratched the surface to actually reach that aim....you thought you might be a ghost/you didn't get to heaven but you made it close...
share your thoughts =)

quite a sleazy guitar lick on this one, me likey!
I was actually disappointed when I first heard; I had thought it would be epically epic like, say, Viva La Vida, but even bigger. That's not what I got.
After a few listens though, I love it. I think a few more listens are needed. ;)

It's obvious the reviewers of this song were totally not paying attention while it was playing and made up some bullcrap about it sounding like Rammstein and there being three parts and a full orchaestra and a huge chorus. The only thing missing from their fake review was the sounds of a marching parade combined with all the mating calls from the Philadelphia Zoo animals.

42 is an amazing song, it is among their best for sure.
The opening, with Chris and the piano, is superb.
Then the build up and sudden switch to the robotic 'Radiohead' type loop is SO refreshing and unpredictable. The beat is menacing.
Onto the third part of the song, again as unpredictable as mid-section, seems to be more from 'The Hardest Part' than anything else of theirs I have heard - although it seems to fit so well.
Then to finish off with Chris and the piano, the icing on the cake.
I love this song, with each listen it gets better.

Here's my cold opinion:
This song is gorgeous. It is not perfect because it is impossible to do a listenable song for all moods. This song's mood vary a lot, yes. It is divided in 3 parts that merge into one to make an excellent song. It starts with a piano riff and chris singing in a mellow but harsh voice with the lyrics we all know. Lyrics make a deep involvement in life after death."Time is so short but I'm sure there must be something more". Yeah it is repetitive but it is great. At the last seconds of the first part chris and johny are singing oooh and then the piano fades away slowly as well as the vocals. Then a dark and hard bit of violin comes in to welcome bass, battery and the guitar. This is one of the heaviest sound coldplay have ever done and some vocals again (oooh). This second part has a glorious ending with a stunning and heavy guitar solo. Then the third part begins. This part is faster and catchy but amazing. Chris singing loud "You thought you might be a ghost, you did not get to heaven but you made it close" with a rough voice and will and guy setting the quick rythm and then in the end another johny solo, not as good as the one before but it works perfectly well. 10/10

Great song, love the beginning and the middle part sends shivers down my spine, it's kinda.. spooky ! When I've heard it first I had this feeling that there were ghosts around or something :P I don't like much the last part, it ruins the atmosphere a bit, but the vocals are quite interesting :)

Some parts of it I have to actually laugh at in disbelief at it's amazingness. When I heard the gorgeous catchy chorus, "You thought you miiiight be a ghooost" I was like, "WTF, this is so amazing how do they do it?!"It seems like it's out of place and it shouldn't work at all, but it does and it fits perfectly. When I first read that line in Rolling Stone I didn't expect it to sound like that AT ALL. And Jonny's guitar before that chorus, and the "you didn't get to heaven but ya ohhhh oh oh ohhhh oh oh", ahhhhhhhhh stupendous! This makes me smile so much. Argh, and the contrast of the joyous melody there to the quiter "Those who are dead..." and Jonny's apocalyptic guitar and Will's drums after that. WOAH, amazing.

^ It might have to do with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", a novel by Douglas Adams in which the #42 is supposed to yield the answer to life and such.
Apologies if this question I have has already been answered:
Anyone remember when Chris said that there was one song on their 4th album that "everyone must listen to before they die"?
Does anyone know what song that was? I'm guessing 42 (cuz of it's awesomeness), but I don't know for sure....:inquisitive:
