I'm pretty suprised that LIJ will be the next single... It might be good, track but not that good.. If we say Violet Hill was the first single and Viva La Vida the second. Then Lovers in Japan is nothing compared to the third singles from the previous albums..

Actually I'm glad it is... the way it sounds in that live video is very promising and it has great potential as a single i think

The next single shall be "Yes!", IMO. It's the best music in the album, so far.

I'm surprised, too, but I'm happy about the choice. we don't know how the album version sounds, but I think it'll be very catchy and emotional...
actually I was very confident about 42, but maybe it will be a single at the end of year...

I love the intro to the live version on jimmy kimmel. It sounds promising to me. It has great potential to be a big hit.

By the way, i just joined the forum and I must say I love coldplaying.com. Coldplays definitely the best band in the world and this site is amazing. Look forward to meeting you guys ands gals :)

I'm just thinking.. Trouble was the third single from Parachutes, Clocks from AROBTTH and Talk from X&Y.. I don't think LIJ is just as good..

Surprised, but in a good way. Hearing the song on that show, I really liked it.

Has the band actually said this is the next single? I’ve not watched those Kimmel videos yet – do they say in the videos?

johnnymax865

we shouldn't compare it to other 3rd singles cause it's not properly the 3rd and it's just another album... the common idea imo is that the next single has to be different from the previous ones... I mean, after a rock song like violet hill and after a brilliant song like viva la vida, it's good to have a sweet song like lovers in japan... so they can better show the different styles in the album...

someone found on the internet that mat whitecross shot a music promo for this song... but the band hasn't said anything yet

If it is then I'll be delighted! I love all the new tunes, very impressed so far, but LiJ is the best of the lot for me so far, an incredibly tender song.

Have you heard the entire studio cut of this song? If so, then sure your opinion is a valid one...if not, you really can't base it off of the acoustic version they came up with a few weeks ago...part of what made songs like Trouble and Clocks so popular was how they sounded on their respective albums...so, just as we can't say how amazing it's going to be, there's no reason to knock it till we've heard the real full thing...

footyfan10

Yeah I'm actually digging the acoustic version of this song right now. I won't listen to the album version until the albums out, not even a twenty second intro. I think its a great balance like someone mentioned, a rock out song, a kind of idk great song lol and now a more emotional piece.

Personally though, I was wondering what everyone else thought about how many singles this album will actually have. They put out Violet Hill really early in the game. Viva la Vida came out really early. And now we've got them basically showing everyone Lovers in Japan early. This kind of rapid early release indicates to me that the band is either going to release quite a few singles, or that they think the albums got the potential to do it. I'm trying to think of all the singles from the previous albums, but for X & Y you had four. And we've got three already!?! Very few bands have the quality of album, or the balls, to release a lot of singles, but recently The Fray comes to mind as a band with a large number of singles out (the quality being debatable). If we've got three already, 42 is definitely seeming like a single, Yes might do it and I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the other ones we've heard about do it.

Seriously, the quality of this album is just off the charts. I know X & Y was big and not all everyone wanted it to be, and that VLVODAAHF has the band nervous, but I'm fully anticipating it to destroy all their previous albums in terms of sales. And having an iTunes commercial always bodes well! And aside from sales, theres the fact this looks like it could be their best IMO.

What I find interesting is that Vida is supposedly a departure from the sound that got them a ton of radio play in the first place. To blitz the general public with three singles already is quite an aggressive marketing tactic given there's a slight (large to some people) shift in how they sound. With all that being said, I see LIJ as being (so far from what we've heard via Kimmel and the acoustic version) the "truest" sound in terms of the casual fan. So it would make sense to get that one out there ASAP in case the rest of the album is more of a grower to those not fanatic about the band.

Yeah, i agree Maloo. This song emanates the signature "Coldplay" sound which a general audience might find radio-friendly. I've got a feeling that this could be one of the big songs off the album in terms of commercial appeal.

I don't think they should release ANY singles.

like chris says, once you think about a song as a single
it changes your perception of the song.

I love "Lovers in Japan" - but will I love it as much if it gets overplayed in the media?

I'm scared

I completely agree about a song getting overplayed, my main reason for disliking In My Place.
But short of doing a Kid A and not releasing any singles, Coldplay have to keep up the hype around this album as long as they can, its more money for the band and the record label. I'm not saying money is the only reason for doing anything, but it sure helps in life :P

footyfan10

actually thats completely true

i never got a chance to like clocks because it was always on the radio, it was until i heard the scientist that i was drawn in

but that being said, the fact that somethings a single doesnt mean it should change it entirely for the fan base, i mean, i dont listen to the radio religiously so it won't affect me that much

but a song like talk was more interesting to me before it became a single, but time usually heals these things, and in a few years we'll rediscover the greatness of these songs...which is usually what happens to me when i get bored of a song

Jpw48
03-06-2008, 10:39 PM
Clocks as well yeah!
The overplaying of those two tracks actually Ruined Rush Of Blood for me :(
Given the choice, I'll listen to Parachutes, then X&Y followed by AROBTTH if i'm desperate :o

I have been a member here for awhile and never posted, but this song made me. I am a HUGE coldplay fan, but I'm not much for the board talk. This song is great. I love violet hill and viva la vida, but this song is just great. Great. Coldplay puts so much work into their songs, and it is always so apparent when their cd's come out. You might have a song that you don't like to much on there, but that song is still good. Other bands just produce a few good songs and add a bunch of fillers. A filler on a Coldplay CD? I don't think so. Then they have songs that are just so good, it's impossible for you to see why somebody else doesn't like this band. This is one of those songs, and it is just the acoustic version. I'm amazed. I really can't wait for this CD to come out!

make a video for each song on the album.

i haven't read all the posts on this thread but i wanted to post my opinion anyway.

i personally think (after hearing the 3 seperate versions of this song ESPECIALLY the clip from jimmy kimmel) that this could be a coldplay classic. i think it sounds like a great choice for the next single and i'm insanely excited to hear the studio version. besides... they did say on Q radio yesterday that this may be their most important song ever or something... so i'm guessing it's pretty fucking good!

Yeah I'm surprised I thought that the new single would be either 42 or Viva la Vida (I'm one of the ones who thinks Viva la Vida isn't an official single yet), but from what I have heard of this song so far I think it's really great and it deserves to be a single.

Viva la Vida should most definitely not be considered a single. It was a promo in an iTunes commercial, and they performed it live, but that doesn't mean anything.

Now after several listenings of the album version of this song, I’m sure that it SHOULD be a single, it’s great musically and lyrically, and at the same time it sounds very “radio-friendly”.

You're absolutely right, just because it's the bands highest ever charting song in the US as well as all the promo CDs being sent around pretty much confirms that Viva la Vida will definately never be a single, right?

Yeh, Lovers'll make a good single. Nice and upbeat. Should be Yes though.

Viva won't be an official single release, they've not released any titular album track as a single before.

i think lovers in japan is a pretty great song. that being said, as we heard the acoustic version first, that one is the one I like the most truthfully. it will take sometime for me to think of the new version as the version. but i like it well enough for me to think it could be a good single.

Yes is one of the least radio friendly tracks on the album, wouldnt make a good single but of course, doesnt make it any less good :P

If Lovers In Japan is the next single, it will become a Coldplay classic like Yellow and Fix You for sure, the majority of people allready like it a lot on first listen and it also grows on you and its starting to becoming my favourite song above 42 on the album now

This is my favorite song on the new album and I'm happy it will be the next single.

I don't know what all the hype is about for Yes, I think that is the weakest track on the album (sans Chinese Sleep Chant, which is awesome)

well, after lost! it's between 42 and lovers in japan. IMO it's in win win. I expect it will be lovers in japan just because it's more accessible and anthemic, but maybe, since violet hill was kind of an accidental single, they'll add 42 as a fifth single (sort of like what they did with the hardest part and what if after X&Y's release).
