Grammy-award winning rock stars Coldplay are to return to the Odyssey Arena this winter for a Christmas show, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal today.

The world's biggest band, led by Chris Martin will bring the Viva La Vida tour to Belfast on Thursday, December 18 — their only Irish date this year.

Coldplay last performed at the Odyssey Arena in December 2005, in the same month Oasis also played the venue.

The show was considered one of the highlights of the year for Northern Ireland concert-goers who were lucky enough to get their hands on the precious tickets.

Since their formation in 1997 the British four-piece, who describe their music as soft rock, have sold over 20m albums and notched up a string of hit singles including Yellow, In My Place, Speed of Sound, Fix You and the Grammy Award-winning Clocks.

::Hayley::
27-05-2008, 10:31 PM
Hey new people!
Great to see ya :D

http://www.odysseyarena.com/coldplay.html If you check out this site, you should be able to get the info you need....

Ticket price: To be confirmed!
But you could phone Odyssey Box Office on 028 9073 9074 or call Ticketmaster's 24-hr credit card hotline on 0870 243 4455. NB Phone bookings subject to service charge. (www.odysseyarena.com)

The 2005 gig sold out, but not quickly...I don't think so anyway! Best to get in there as soon as you can though.

So people are you gonna go for sitting or standing? i'm gonna chance standing... even though I will need to purchase stilts... but I'd rather be close to front than sitting miles away...!

Venue holds up to 10,000... if my sources are right!

damn fully seated :(

Why damn?I think this is better, cos at the 2005 gig I was standing beside some right tools and they almost ruined the show for me. At least sitting you might actually see the stage and the band - that's if we manage to get sitting down on the floor!!

I REALLY HOPE I GET SEATS ON THE FLOOR!!! :surprised:

Seats as in chairs... :smug:

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Ok, perhaps a slight over reaction, but its fully seated! WHAT THE HELL! At least if you are standing you have some chance of getting a leasst a tiny weeny little bit close, this way its gna b like, get in, sit down and shut up. (again perhaps slight over-reaction, i am prone to hyperbole, but still.) Im disappointed...

::Hayley::
29-05-2008, 09:59 PM
Ahhh don't be disappointed!! :(
I really think this is a good move.... :nice:
At the last gig people were standing for too long and ended up with the usual "let's throw water and beer over the crowd".... it made me soooo mad....
Also, because I'm only about 5" I never get a good view of bands - the only way I saw anything of the Manics when they were in the Waterfront was cos Nicky Wire stood on an amp for like 3 seconds hahah...

This way everyone gets a chance to have a decent view one of this best gigs in history - I will guarantee it :D

does anyone know which seats are which price?! its not tiered on the floor so if ppl stand up in front of u, ur screwd!! this is so crap!!

If you check out this thread, the numerous links for the Odyssey and ticketmaster which have been posted you will find the prices .. I'd say seats on the ground are more expensive than up on the sides... :)
And people standing in front of you in seating concerts is no different than people standing in front of you at proper standing gigs :inquisitive:

Cece
29-05-2008, 10:19 PM
Yeah the beer and stuff is really unpleasant but its nearly worth it to be able to get up close.
I just think this way is such a lottery, as lil burt said, thanks to the geniuses at the odyssey the floor isnt tiered and the last thing i want is to sit for however long lookin at the back of someones head.
And i think you have a better atmosphere when you are standing, ok so there are sometimes some rowdy people but if the security is decent that shouldnt be a problem and u can have a bit of a dance.
This is just really unnecessary.

lil burt
29-05-2008, 10:23 PM
and.... if you're standing- u can get right to the front!!!!! not much movement in the seats... (just realise CeCe made that point too.... o well, its important so it deserves a double mention)

::Hayley::
29-05-2008, 10:25 PM
*cliche alert...*

I respect what you are all saying, but there is, after all, only a limited number of people who can actually get up close - if you are lucky enough to get anywhere near the front then you're usually pushed and shoved throughout - for people lacking in the height department like myself I agree that yes, there is often a better atmosphere standing, but personally I think seating is better so that everyone gets a fair deal. The Odyssey stage is pretty high so I think the chances of staring at someone's head are pretty slim, and also - we seem to be forgetting that Coldplay are coming to Belfast and not Dublin, so if you're going to complain about seating leave the tickets for people who will see their favourite band no matter what, or else look at the bigger picture and thank yourselves lucky that they didn't choose Dublin instead.

Cece
29-05-2008, 10:34 PM
Well ok fair enough the height thing may be an issue for some people and there are some benefits to seating.
Personally i had planned on attending both dublin and belfast, as i did on the last tour, and im sure a dublin date will be announced at some stage. They arent doing me some special favour, i feel im paying more than enough to see them and thus to have an opinion on the matter and i feel no inclination to "leave the tickets" for more placid coldplay fans.
Im just a bit disappointed with it, thats all.

lil burt
29-05-2008, 10:37 PM
I too respect what ur saying.... and of course im still going to see them- my favourite band- im simply making the point that we should have the option of standing- i would happily put up with beer and water and shoving to be at the front- thats wer i was last time and it was amazing. No way will i 'leave the tickets'....

::Hayley::

Oh for goodness sake.
By saying leave the tickets I simply meant this:
You are complaining about sitting - This is the only option and there's not a hell of a lot we can do about it I'm afraid.

Yes - you're 110% entitled to your opinions, as I am, so I'm just saying GET OVER IT and sit on your asses :laugh4: - Although once the gig gets going... I'm sure noone will be sitting anyway :)

i knoe ive already got tickets, good seats on the ground, cant say how but cant wait till the concert, i know what you mean by he seating its all good no matter what.

ITS COLDPLAY WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT :D:D:D

30-05-2008, 01:38 AM
this is awful news, i was really looking forward to getting my tickets, but now i will not bother. ive been to 6 coldplay gigs and if i wanted to sit in a chair and listen to coldplay i could do that in my living room. the great thing about concerts is that there is freedom to bounce about to songs, sing your wee heart out for 2 hours, its not about been restricted to sitting in your seat and not been able to move in case of offending other ticketholders.

tell me this, when politik comes on will you all stay in your seat, with no emotion or willingness to jump about at all? maybe im on my own, but i think this is awful news, and the worst thing is that there isnt a coldplay gig in dublin to go to instead! looks like im going to london or berlin or paris for a coldplay gig, just because some ticketholders (i can hardly call them real fans can i?) that buy one album a year want to sit in peace and listen to coldplay.

maybe coldplay are a band that have evolved into a radio2 middle of the road band not wanting to offend anyone especially the people that go to one gig a year and this will be it.
i heard that eejit frank mitchell the weatherman talking on UTV today about the last coldplay gig in belfast and he was at it and he talked about what a great show it was. this is the perfect example of the kind of people that will go to the gig and want to sit down. all these things have me thinking, why do i like coldplay? they arent even a band anymore theyre a brand, rock music for 50year old dads radio2 listeners that want to be cool.

floor seats? maybe the ticketholders can bring along a picnic basket with strawberries, a bottle of champagne, some french cheese and some wholemeal crackers(all the above items bought at marks and spencers of course) and why not bring along the flask of hot vegetable broth from the tesco finest range.

floor seats? thats so rock and roll. enjoy your gig people, come the 18th december i will be sitting in my living room chair with viva la vida on the ipod, and it wont cost a thing and craic will be 90.

"VIVA LA VIDA"? floor seats? now thats really living life to the max!

seems like the atmosphere at that gig will be "DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS"

we had similar seats to that for take that. was kind of cool because we were on the dividing line between the front & back stage. so we could mostly see what was happening on the stage but could also see some backstage too. we saw take that hanging out in their dressing gowns before they went on :D

Wow, it's been so long since I've posted here that I'm amazed that my account is still active. But, it's good to be back. Time to make up for lost time with a lengthy post!

Good news first - I got tickets! Yay!

The bad news - floor seating, row 52. (Not really bad news, and I'm not going to complain about this - better to be there than not, especially as I missed out completely on the Odyssey instant sellout in 2005.)

Minor complaint time - I wish the 2nd show would've been advertised upfront and not just added without warning. After logging on and refreshing constantly from 9am onwards, Ticketmaster started showing no tickets available at all from 9.05am onwards. But, I persisted as small numbers of tickets usually show up again (if people don't complete orders on time etc). So, after a bit of persistence, it was with great relief that two floor seats became available. It didn't matter that they were at the very back - they were on offer, so I grabbed them. About £94 for two tickets is a lot of money, but since I've never seen Coldplay live before, I was a happy man. Until...I went back to the main Ticketmaster page, and noticed that another show had been stealthily added. Out of curiosity, I checked and could've got row 24! Oh well, since I couldn't afford to go to another concert, I let them go with some regret. Just a minor gripe though. I'm delighted to be going at all, and I don't care that it's an all seated concert. I'm sure there's plenty of people who missed out. A few questions and observations though:

- Obviously the 18th Dec show must be sold out, but is anything still available for the 19th? A friend of mine got tickets at 11am from Wonderland Promotions, and apparently Ticketmaster were showing sold out at that stage.
- Where did all the good seats go, and how did they go so quickly? (To scalpers and 'agencies' presumably. I can't check eBay at work, but I guess there's plenty there already.) For the 2005 Belfast show, I remember that a significant chunk of the tickets seemed to go in the presale, which meant that the allocation for the general sale was already pretty small, and so sold out almost instantly. But there was no presale today, so did anyone get lucky and get near the front?

Good post Belfast Boy....
good to see you back!
I agree about the craftiness of adding the second date... my friend and I wanted two tickets and the first ones he was offered at about 9:02 were West tier, near the middle. We just bought them and were happy enough but then discovered the second gig and I ended up buying two more, near the front of the South (side) tier, which are much better than the West so hopefully my friend will get his sold...

anyhoo

can't wait to see them!

bet you're relieved after missing out on 2005 - it was amazing, and this one promises to be 100% better with another new album behind them :D

Hi Hayley. Good news about your tickets. Wish I could go to both shows but am delighted to be going to one. Based on demand, I think that Coldplay could certainly play larger / outdoor venues if they wanted to, so it'll be great to see them in an indoor arena so close to home!

There seems to be a lot of complaining on this board today, but like I said, I don't give a damn that it's an all-seated show. I don't think I'll be sitting down much anyway.

Another complaining thread has appeared in the Live forum too - why, for God's sake? I prefer to sit, others prefer to stand - both are entitled to their opinions. But, for whatever reason, the UK tour is all-seated, and that's an inescapable fact! Yes, the tickets are getting more expensive, but aren't bad for a band of Coldplay's calibre. For example, U2 will almost certainly be touring in 2009, and the cheapest ticket for any of their shows is unlikely to be less than £60 the way things are going. Don't even start me about Madonna...

Bottom line - if you want to see Coldplay live in the UK this year, then just buy a ticket and quit whining. The worst seat in any venue is always better than not being there at all. The thing is, the way the shows are selling out, those who want to take a principled stand are clearly in the minority.

Glad everyone on here all got their tickets. I'm lucky enough to be going to both days but like a few people already mentioned I was a bit dissapointed at first that it was all seated, probably because I got row 40 and row 26 tickets but as the day has went on the less I cared where the seats was as I'm getting to see them again. It was my dream to see them back in 2005 so I'm soooooooooo stoked I'm getting that chance again ;O)

75 separate Odyssey ticket items for sale on eBay already. It's sad to see plenty with photos of actual tickets who must've bought them in person this morning with the express intention of imeediately hawking them online.

I don't know what the protocol is on this forum in terms of swearing, but hopefully nobody will object too much to me calling these people fucking parasites who always end up with the best tickets.

Twas awesome stuff. Never expected all the lasers and big screens and dangling ball screen thingy and exploding balloons etc. The band were on top form, started off a bit quiet but got everyone into it after Violet Hill. After that the crowd were awesome.

Took seeing them live to really appreciate Will, he can do everything and do it well. And more bands should stick a stage in the back of the crowd. When you realise your seats are at the very back and feeling pretty bad about it, having the band come from the other side of the arena to 10 feet on front of you is amazing. I am so jealous of the people surrounding them then.

Probably the best show I've ever been too, singing, energy, and niceness of the band made my Christmas Eve eve.

seats seats seats.
coldplay should never do all-seated shows again. i thought it was hilarious when chris was full flight mid-song and then right next to him 2 latecomers come along with there beers and take their seats right beside him on the catwalk. also everyone seated during the first couple of tracks..somthing i was worried would happen and was embarrassing really..
that aside, a fun show..LIT2 was my fave and the C stage idea is amazing, worked really well i thought.

Hallo,

I am the one that was sat beside cooki2222 - i have a few good photos of the night. All in all, I must say some songs were better on Tuesday than on Friday. The top 4 songs from both shows...
1. Viva La Vida (Tuesday)
2. Viva La Vida (Friday)
3. The Scientist (Friday)
4. Fix You (Tuesday)

It seemed as if he had to "work the crowd" more on tuesday - the crowd on friday were standing throughout and sang throughout where as Chris had to interact a bit more on Tuesday.

Anyway here's a few of my fav pics... click on them to enlarge them. I have taken over 200 pics from the night, but only posted my fav here - the rest are on my webspace (http://www.guffrie.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=17762)

close-up Guy pics in normal clothes with her you mean ? :wideeyed:

and video of song never performed live of course :P prospekt's march, anyone ?
:uhoh:

seats seats seats.
coldplay should never do all-seated shows again. i thought it was hilarious when chris was full flight mid-song and then right next to him 2 latecomers come along with there beers and take their seats right beside him on the catwalk. also everyone seated during the first couple of tracks..somthing i was worried would happen and was embarrassing really..
that aside, a fun show..LIT2 was my fave and the C stage idea is amazing, worked really well i thought.
I so agree with you, two stupid guys ruined the entrance arriving right in front of me saying they had the seats where other people were standing, they even called some girl from the security and I was going mad, wtf, get inside before the band starts to play..then I had this stupid guy behind me who told me to sit down during Violet Hill, but there was no way I was going to stay seated, other people on the floor were standing, he could as well go **** off, he even tried to tell a security guy, who I guess told him he couldn't do anything to me, and few seconds later Chris told the audience there was no need to stay seated, take that stupid man

It seems security at the Odissey was all the same then, I tried to get closer to the b-stage, staying were the security was stopping people to get further, and I asked one of them if I could just stay there to have a better spot and she kept telling me to go back to my seat, while other people kept coming from the back, what was wrong with her I don't know, I was not screaming or doing strange things, my seat was just two rows back from where they were standing..but I managed to get decent pics and full The Hardest Part+Postcards from away :)

if anyonehad told me to sit down i know what i wouldve said to them haha, i was on my feet from the classical music on both nights until i got back to the car :D

got a set list from the first gig and on the 2nd night i got the revised time sheet haha, they had a chartered play back to london for 3am.

But the fat security man really needed to chill out, told me to step back a few times haha and that i was blocking his line of sight.

Bet he was raging when i got a hi-five from chris martin haha plus he kept on looking at me and guffs electronic devices

Sorry to hear that people got hassle from over-zealous security. Unfortunately the Odyssey staff have a reputation for being rather killjoyish (is that a word?), but I personally had no problems with recording. Maybe it was because I was in row 52 rather than up at the front, but everyone in my area was filming away without any problems whatsoever. Indeed, I was very pleased to get the following songs in pretty much complete form:

In My Place
Fix You
Clocks
Viva La Vida
Lost
Death Will Never Conquer-Green Eyes-Jingle Bells
Lovers In Japan
The Scientist
Life In Technicolor II

If I had any way of posting these, I would, but the files are very large (smallest 78mb, largest is 600mb, 2.35gb in total) - glad I invested in a new memory card before the show!

Anyway, I really enjoyed my first Coldplay concert. It was a great experience, the band were really loose and up for it, and I was very impressed. As an added bonus, I was especially thrilled to hear LIT II. Hopefully there'll still be tickets available for Phoenix Park whenever my credit card clears in a few days!

Ok so, I won't go on about the trip from dublin to belfast and the time spent in the city center.
We arrived at the Odyssey at 5 more or less, so I was sure they were already inside. Went to the box office to collect my ticket then we went around the venue to see were each numbered entrance was (when in fact the numbered ones were once already inside the venue :laugh3:). We passed some gates, and at the last one we found three people there waiting..something suspicious was going on, they looked at us, we looked at them, we knew they were waiting for the band, it was too obvious.
After not so much time someone from the security came at the gate, they were talking through some device, prolly with the band's van driver and we caught "they're arriving":D
We didn't have to wait too much, their vans arrived and we showed them the banners.
Now I tought they were going to close the gates and we would see them far gettin off and run into some door in the arena..but I was wrong.
They stopped right there at the entrance.
The first one to get off was Jonny, he seemed happy to see some people waiting for them and was all smiles, took a pic with me, signed some stuff the other gave to him and then went inside a door :nice:
At that point my neurons were not working too well :laugh3::laugh3:
My friend called my name and I turned to see Guy coming over, I didn't faint, not screamed, don't worry, I never do it when something like this happens, I was just happy to finally meet him. He was smiling as well, he got I was the one with the CoW banner, I asked if they were ever gonna play it and he said "we don't even remember how to play it"..mean Chris, he was joking then
Anyway, in that moment I couldn't care less..we took a pic and my friend did the same then the other three people asked him for an autograph and then we talked to Will, who was so nice to ask us where we were coming from and thanked for "coming all the way" too see them.
They were all so great, but unfortunately were a bit in a hurry, so we didn't have much time to chat with them.
Just when they were going I saw Phil and called him, he asked where we already met, and I pointed out it was the day before in Dublin, and then he remembered and laughed
Phil if you're reading, thank you :)

I don't have anything signed, tough I had brought some cd covers with me, but I really could have not asked for more: Coldplay love ya all, I don't know if I was super lucky, but I'm more prone to think it's just them who are super nice with fans :nice:
Oh and also many thanks to the woman from their security for letting us meet them.

Ok pics..I cut myself off because I look shit..they're all much better to look at, a gorgeous band that is

aww it was such a good night! Was meant to be row 31, only got a bloody upgrade to ROW 5! That was some good times.
My question is, does anyone know the piano bit chris played inbetween songs at one stage? Its a really famous piano theme, its been used in films and tv i am sure. Its driving me crazy trying to think of it! lol!

Great that you got an upgrade :D

I guess you're talking about the bit at the end of Politik, it's Erik Satie's Gnossienne #1 :)

@Carla: yes, Wembley front row on the right all the way :nice:
I think I was able to keep the secret because I still can't believe all the things that happened in such a short time, I needed to relive them myself

This is Yellow, recorded from my friends who were on Jonny's side

Twas awesome stuff. Never expected all the lasers and big screens and dangling ball screen thingy and exploding balloons etc. The band were on top form, started off a bit quiet but got everyone into it after Violet Hill. After that the crowd were awesome.

Took seeing them live to really appreciate Will, he can do everything and do it well. And more bands should stick a stage in the back of the crowd. When you realise your seats are at the very back and feeling pretty bad about it, having the band come from the other side of the arena to 10 feet on front of you is amazing. I am so jealous of the people surrounding them then.

Probably the best show I've ever been too, singing, energy, and niceness of the band made my Christmas Eve eve.

great review. thank you :D

and surprises to come after Christmas for this show too
Phil included
:P

sounds good :)

Just as I had reached the point of despairing that I would not be seeing any gigs while on holiday, the luck of the Irish seemed to smile down on me (we won’t dwell on the Kings of Leon in Dublin while I was in Kerry debacle). Coldplay had originally been booked to play in Belfast on the 18th and as with their Dublin show, the tickets sold out in a matter of minutes. But oh joy of joys for me, they had to change the date to the 23rd and some unlucky feckers couldn’t make it anymore. So, to the poor bastard who had to return his ticket for seat 4, row 4, thanks very much for an awesome Christmas present!

Opening for Coldplay was a band called The High Wire. Very indie-folk. You know – obligatory crusty lead singer with untamed facial hair and cardigan, slightly more edgy guitarist in a Ramones tee and a girl on keyboards with a shiny ponytail and a waistcoat. Very appropriate given that Chris Martin is pretty much the godfather of crusty indie-folk style. They were quite good, and I felt bad for them that the show started 30 minutes earlier than advertised and the arena was essentially empty. Nonetheless, their performance was enthused and I’d say opening for the likes of Coldplay helped soothe the pain for such a relatively new band.

And then, strangely, there was a DJ. Like, as in, a guy, under a spotlight, with his decks and thingies, playing (is that the right word??) what I suppose would be described as trance or dance or something, while really bizarre images flowered on a big screen. Pity I forgot to drop a couple of tabs in the taxi on the way over. Anyway, the guy’s name was Jon Hopkins, and I guess if you like that kind of thing, he was very good. I do not like that kind of thing (in fact it makes me want to peel my skin off) but he was hot so that kind of made it vaguely bearable. The animation was kind of entertaining as well I suppose. I was glad when it was over and honestly, everyone around me seemed a little bemused by the whole turn of events. Ugh. Dance music. Shudder.

Right. Back to things more wonderful. I managed to see Coldplay when I was living in Dublin in 2003 and they were fantastic then, so I was pretty damn excited about the show in Belfast. I was also intrigued because it was an all seated show….which when you consider that I was in seat 4, row 4, will tell you just what a great Christmas present that poor bastard gave me – I was literally within spitting distance of the band. Metaphorically speaking of course, it wouldn’t really do to spit at Coldplay. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them, you may think what I did pre-2003….they’re a pretty chilled out band and are likely to be boring live. Well, they unequivocally come alive when they take to that stage. Yes, Chris dresses funny and they’re all Oxfam-Fair Trade hippie types, but they know how to blow an audience away. The show started with the auditorium in complete darkness and the stage shielded by a gauzy curtain. The band came on wielding sparklers so all we could see was 4 twinkling lights and their silhouettes. The crowd went wild, the lights came up and the music rolled over us. Phenomenal. Chris Martin is a manic presence, whirling all over the stage and keeping the audience on the crest of a wave of excitement. After the first song he kindly told us we didn’t have to stay seated and the whole place erupted. Fix You was incredible, with Chris at the piano, grinning broadly as we did the singing for him. Yellow got pretty much the same reception, as giant balloons drifted overhead, which Chris took great joy in popping with his guitar to unleash a rain of yellow confetti on the crowd. In fact, there wasn’t a song that wasn’t accompanied by roars of joy and gleeful singing from the audience. And Coldplay are all about pleasing their audience. The stage was constructed with a ramp going into the crowd on each side, and they made sure to play a few songs from those points as well, going so far as to set up a piano at the end of one ramp – practically right next to me - hurrah. Just in case that didn’t bring them close enough to their audience, they disappeared at one stage, only to reappear in the crowd in the stands at the back of the hall, and proceeded to play a few songs from there too. Based on what we could see on the big screen, the people immediately surrounding them looked as if all their Christmases had come at once! The show was full of light and sound and energy, and they played songs from all their albums, as well as an interesting rendition of Take That’s Want You Back and a few verses of Jingle Bells. It was 2 days before Christmas after all. They played for two hours and still the crowd begged for more, as an avalanche of paper butterflies floated over our upturned faces. Frankly, I think they could have played all night, and still we would have cajoled and pleaded for just one more. Without doubt, the best live show I have ever seen.

Eventually we had to drag ourselves away from the euphoria inside the arena. I shared a taxi back to my hotel with a couple who had also travelled from the Republic of Ireland to be at the concert…and to our great delight we were welcomed into the cab by the sweet sounds of Coldplay…smart man, our taxi driver!
