So what the heck is going on with Denver tickets? I think they were supposed to go on sale last weekend, and then it changed to this past weekend, and no there's still no listing on Ticketmaster for the show, and Livenation.com only has a placeholder with no information.

Anyone know what's up?

Am about to buy tickets in section 130...looks from venue map that those seats are next to stage, but I dont have a sense for whether they will be obstructed (below stage eye level, or blocked by speakers, etc.)

Anyone have sense for stage layout and whether Sec. 130, Row 6 would be good view?

I have 3 tickets for the Denver show available for sale. I only want what I paid for them. Unfortunately, we have had 2 recent deaths in the family and we don't feel like going to the show and want to see if there is someone out there who wants to buy them from me. They are in front of the stage in section 106, all seated together. I did buy them from Ticketmaster so sadly, convenience charges are going to be included, I still have the original receipt if you want a copy. I have great feedback on ebay for those who are wary. I am trustworthy. I also have a paypal account. Please email me if you are interested in these tickets. I can also send you a pic of them, using my camera phone. Thank you.

The next thing for my single girl first is going to a concert alone. I will see Coldplay on November 21st. I’m so excited because every time they have come to Colorado, tickets sold out quickly. I was supposed to go with someone but it didn’t work out. Instead of missing my fave band of all time, I went online and clicked one ticket for purchase. Yes, it would be nice to experience the concert with someone. But if they don’t have the same love for Chris Martin, it’s better for you to revel his hyper dancing, piano banging, and creative self all by yourself.

:)Well....I reconsidered. I decided to go to the show....mostly because my sister liked Coldplay and i decided she would probably want us to go see them. So, luckily I still have a hotel room reserved and have my flights intact and I turned down the offers I got for the tickets. So, you will see us there!

Wow this night snuck up on me. Tomorrow's the day!

Hopefully we'll get quite a few Prospekt's March previews. Too bad the "gang" has more or less disbanded (many of our Coldplay concert regulars went to other states or have moved on). Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised and re-invigorated by the new tour as X+Y at the Pepsi Center was mildly disappointing. Still, my seventh Denver Coldplay show.

They're a punching bag for critics and a punch line for comedians.

Pick the put-down, and they've been on the receiving end: insufferable, unoriginal, pompous, arrogant and - worst of all - boring.

And yet they've sold 40 million albums, routinely pack arenas and once even affected a company's stock by changing a record's release date.

That's the dichotomy of Coldplay, which has a date at the Pepsi Center tonight.

At best, their critics have slammed the earnest Brits as "Radiohead Lite," featuring all the wistful atmosphere, but none of the musical innovation. At worst, even the band's fans are slagged. "Music for medium-level dull people." That's how the Washington Post's J. Freedom du Lac described Coldplay's catalog earlier this year.

But would this vitriol be in such high supply if Coldplay weren't so successful? Do critics hate them because they've become rich and famous, with an Oscar winner in the family, or do they merely feel obligated to tell the masses they're buying the wrong band?

Perhaps they're just baffled that any artist could be so reviled and revered at the same time.

"None of my personal or professional acquaintances, nobody in the street or the local cafe, not a single soul will admit to liking Coldplay or purchasing their music," Andy Gill of The Independent wrote this summer in his article titled Why I Hate Coldplay. "Indeed, most seem to agree that they epitomize everything that's wrong with modern rock music. So who's buying all their albums? Who are those masses politely arrayed in their thousands at stadiums when Coldplay plays?"

A look at how Coldplay has always been the band you love. Or love to hate.

2000-01

Coldplay's debut, Parachutes, is an immediate hit, selling more than 5 million copies worldwide, but it's bashed for sounding like a less exciting version of Radiohead. The pattern is established in England, whereby the band is nominated for every major award - and routinely ripped for being too safe.

"The criticism most often leveled at Coldplay (certainly 'round these parts) is that they will never be the saviors of rock 'n' roll," wrote the country's influential New Musical Express. "They will never cause front-page tabloid sensation, and they really like their parents."

The honors

Parachutes debuts at No. 1 in the U.K., goes gold in the U.S. and is named best British album at the 2001 Brit Awards and Best Alternative Music Album at the 2002 Grammy Awards. It's also nominated for England's prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

The backlash

After the band is nominated for the Mercury, indie rock label chief Alan McGee calls Coldplay "bed wetter's music." He later expands on his remarks: "Coldplay are the dictionary definition of corporate rock. The singer is about as weird as Phil Collins."

A tale of two reviews

"All told, it's incredible this is a debut album. Accomplished, yet subtle, it works perfectly as a whole."

New Music Express

"There's little on Parachutes that demands attention or punctures the pensive spell. . . . These indistinct London lads might as well be Canadian."

Barry Walters, The Village Voice

***************

2003-04

The band releases A Rush of Blood to the Head and becomes a bona fide arena act, hitting the road for nine months of concerts that cover five continents. The group spawns a legion of imitators, particularly in England, where similar one-named acts such as Keane, Starsailor and Aqualung echo Coldplay's sound and "anthems of insecurity."

The honors

A Rush Of Blood To The Head debuted at No. 1 on the British charts, giving its label the highest first-week sales since the Beatles. It was named best album at the Brit Awards and won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2003, followed by Record of the Year for Clocks in 2004.

The backlash

Critics continue pounding Chris Martin for his rare combination of self-loathing and arrogance, ambition and paranoia. Despite its early success, the band has to defend itself in most interviews. Martin tells Canada's Jam! music site, "We know in our heart of hearts that we're not as evil as Dick Cheney. We can sleep at night."

A tale of two reviews

"It's a relief to hear music that revels in the joys of a simple, graceful melody. The overall effect is tuneful and hypnotic."

David Browne, Entertainment Weekly

"Yet it's Coldplay's lack of humor . . . that makes the dourness so detestable. Coldplay is content to create directionless palettes of sound."

Ethan Brown, New York Magazine

***************

2005-07

We learn just how powerful Coldplay has become when the stock price plummets for EMI, the parent company of the band's record label, when it's announced that the release date for X&Y will be delayed five months while the group reworks songs.

The honors

X&Y sells more than 700,000 copies in its first week of release. It debuts at No. 1 in 32 countries and eventually wins the Rolling Stone Readers Poll for best album of 2005. The band's tour grosses $24.1 million on its North American leg, according to Pollstar.

The backlash

Beating up the band becomes almost blase - until The New York Times delivers a particularly excoriating damnation, calling Coldplay "the most insufferable band of the decade." Then comes 40 Year Old Virgin, in which the band becomes the punchline for one of the film's funniest - if most politically incorrect - gags.

A tale of two reviews

"It is almost - not quite but almost - flawless. X&Y is a fantastically confident collection of songs."

Amy Raphael, The Observer

"(Martin) makes a sound somewhere between a yodel and a hiccup. And the lyrics can make me wish I didn't understand English."

Jon Pareles, The New York Times.

***************

2008

Brian Eno, who helped shape U2 into arena-rock gods, tells the band its songs are "too long, too repetitive and use the same tricks too much" - but signs on to produce its new album anyhow.

Evidence they've still got the power to sell magazines, Coldplay graces the cover of Spin, Rolling Stone and Q to coincide with the release of Viva La Vida.

The honors

The album sells 722,000 copies in its debut week. The only other band to enjoy that much first-week success in the last five years? Coldplay in 2005.

The backlash

A survey by Travelodge in England says Coldplay is the king of putting people to sleep. "The research shows that we are increasingly relying on slow, sleepy music and unchallenging books to take our minds off the pressures of modern living," said Travelodge spokesperson Leigh McCarron. "Coldplay seem to hit just the right spot among Britain's insomniacs."

A tale of two reviews

"The confident majesty of the music . . . belies how (Martin) and his bandmates have invigorated their rock-lite reign."

Chris Willman, Entertainment Weekly

"(While) the experimentation makes this their most musically interesting album to date, its political messages are too vague to be heard amid its outsize hooks."

Will Hermes, Rolling Stone

DENVER - For those of you just joining us from 1999, allow us to introduce you to Coldplay-one of the biggest bands in the world.

Their sensitive pop singles are ubiquitous across generational lines, their first three albums sold tens of millions of copies, and the fate of a gigantic record label (Capitol/EMI) is said to pretty much rest in their hands. But what the band really wants, of course, is to be taken seriously as artists.

"Viva La Vida" is their latest album release which fights the good fight for Coldplay, gently nudging them into new territory without taking any turns sharp enough to jolt the bandwagon. They've mostly shirked the maudlin piano ballads in favor of a style more complicated, more crowded and more cinematic (the opening track is even called "Life in Technicolor"). Famed producer Brian Eno (U2/Talking Heads) joins them here on their slightly quixotic quest to become something more than the sum of their parts.

Friday night, Nov. 21, Coldplay is coming to The Pepsi Center while currently on their "Viva La Vida" tour.

No. Not physically. That would be very silly. That’s a long old drive. Plus, let’s face it. There is not much to look at on the way. I spent much of the trip in the darkened cocoon of my bunk. The rest, faced with the slow realisation, as I peered out of the bus window, that this country is just vast. As soon as we headed out into that nothingness the day after the Dallas show.. the temperature dropped. We eventually hit the Colorado mountains on the way into Denver, and it fell again. Tumbled even. -6 last night (20 Farenheit I think.. crikey). Nothing like the heat of Dallas.

Back in Dallas, Texas, it was more like a summer’s night than a winter freeze. No scarfs required. No jackets even. I was sweltering when I donned the Oxfam jacket to go and meet the patiently waiting volunteers. It was another night of activity for them. Getting the word out there, meeting fans, explaining Oxfam’s work and getting excited about the show ahead. One of them came back afterwards, and described the concert simply as “life-changing”. There are a lot of happy fans leaving these venues once the confetti has fallen.

The same volunteer was telling me about how 1 in 3 children in her town in Texas, goes to bed hungry. It’s just two hours drive from the polished arena where the show was held. That is astonishing. I have learnt so much about this country on my trip with the tour. I am pleased to say that Oxfam also works to overcome poverty here in America too. It’s amazing how poverty can often go so unseen. This is not a poor country. But poverty exists here. It must not be ignored. Hopefully Oxfam’s presence on this tour, can help to improve awareness of poverty, and make it less invisible.

Denver is not a place I know much about. Not that I knew much about Dallas either.. I heard it’s a mile above sea level, which might explain part of that temperature tumble. I know it’s home of the Broncos too.. Today we sit in the warmth of another huge modern arena. It’s just a fairground away from that Broncos stadium, which sits under the watchful eye of those mountains. Today, this will be the home of Coldplay, and 20 Oxfam volunteers, of course.

Oh.. I just wanted to share this with you. I couldn’t help laughing earlier, when I saw the catering area being hoovered before lunch. The hoover (vacuum) was strapped to the back of a busy person, looking more like a proton pack out of Ghostbusters, than a cleaning device. I half expected Peter Venkman and Egon Spengler to appear and fight the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man..

Coldplay blends classic, edgy

At the risk of echoing past reviews of Coldplay, it's really easy to forget what a good band it is. The songs all over the radio and on the group's four albums are so neatly tailored that it's always a refreshing surprise to see Coldplay live and be rocked, be it the early years at the Fillmore Auditorium or Friday night's show at the Pepsi Center.

Granted, Coldplay salted the set early with hits, including the classic Clocks, which has become more muscular with age - largely because of drummer Will Champion, who happily doubled on guitar and vocals during acoustic songs.

But the crowd was down with everything from the first note, be it album cuts or the single When I Ruled the World. In a moment of time when the news seems to be unrelentingly bleak, there's a lot to be said for a packed auditorium of music fans singing lustily and joyously along with a strong set.

It's also refreshing to see a band using common sense in the staging of a concert. Every high-tech bell and whistle was there - the gigantic big screen, floating picture orbs and enough lasers to make The Who very happy. But it was just used in a smarter way, with ramps extending into the audience near the front, and additional big-screens hung halfway back so the rear of the house felt intimate as well. They headed to the rear of the arena for another mini-set, starting with The Scientist.

"This gives everybody at the front the chance to Blackberry their friends and say 'Gee, man, we overpaid,' " singer Chris Martin joked.

Martin has steadily grown as a frontman, intense but jerky in his early days, relaxed and fun these days. He effortlessly commands the stage, where nothing feels forced or planned. He manages to convey a combination of goofiness and warmth, a far cry from the aloof image that the media has painted of him for his ambitious writing or the person he chose to marry.

The band took the stage a bit later than planned, and at press time, encores still were ahead. If recent shows are any indication, the band's first hit, Yellow, was likely to have made up a big part of that.

Jon Hopkins opened with a hypnotic electronic set, accompanied by animation on a big screen that was at the same time up-to-the-minute but also echoed the days of the old San Francisco psychedelic ballroom scene. He could have used a bigger screen, but fans were still surprisingly receptive to the edgy set.

I didn't find a review but I did find a Chris spotting

Ralph and I decided it was necessary to eat breakfast at 1 am, so we hit up Denver Diner.
After sitting for just minutes, no other than fucking Chris Martin is waiting at the register. He kept on looking at me and began to wave for a moment, realizing he had mistaken me with someone else completely.
Anyway, the moral of my story is that Chris Martin is a well-known vegetarian and was eating at Denver Diner of all places, where they serve liver and onions on the menu.

I rest my case.

But that was totally surreal. He is really good looking and surprisingly tall. Yay for random run-ins eh?

same old setlist

Life In Technicolor
Violet Hill
Clocks
In My Place
Speed Of Sound
Cemeteries Of London
Chinese Sleep Chant
42
Fix You
Strawberry Swing
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (techno version) :(
Talk (techno remix)
The Hardest Part
Postcards From Far Away (piano instrumental)
Viva La Vida
Lost!
The Scientist (acoustic)
Death Will Never Conquer (acoustic - Will singing)
Viva La Vida (remix interlude)

First Encore
Politik
Lovers In Japan
Death And All His Friends

Second Encore
Yellow
The Escapist (outro)

Good show. Chris was in high spirits, all over the place, and full of energy. When they came through the Pepsi center during the X+Y tour it felt like we were just another stop but last night they gave a bit more effort. Chris talked a bit during slow bits and he did indeed rip his pants (never noticed during the show), the video screen cameras focused in on the black duct tape wrapped around it during Yellow encore and his quick talk about it (upper leg i think).

Funny how some songs worked better then others now. The Hardest Part of course really works better acoustically and songs like Speed Of Sound, Cemeteries Of London, Chinese Sleep Chant, and Lovers In Japan were highlights.

Still not happy about all backing tapes and having the tinges of doubt on certain songs that its Jonny doing all the guitar sounds but it was a better show than I was fearing. It's still a much different experience then being in front rows during the AROBTTH so its hard to compare the two. But it was a good show and all the fans appeared quite satisfied.

Coldplay @ Pepsi Center

Justin and I went to the Coldplay show last night and really enjoyed their set. On paper, Coldplay’s sound shouldn’t translate to an arena stage but their catalog really comes to life in a live setting. Their secret weapon is drummer Will Champion. Chris Martin recently called Will the greatest drummer in rock music and now I know why. They opened with four huge hits including Violet Hill, Clocks, In My Place and Speed of Sound before settling in to a groove with a slew of album tracks. I was heartbroken they didn’t play my absolute favorite song Trouble, but they are still one hell of a band. Check out Mark Brown’s review from the Rocky if you want to read more about the show. He’s a better writer than I am.

I spotted the JACK-FM vehicle in the parking lot before the show and surprised my former street teamers Jared and Lauren. We gossiped about radio for a while and it was good to see them. If you are in the mood for a little Coldplay, check out In My Place and Lovers In Japan.

Yeah the drums were the highlight of show. Not only were they just mic'ed well for the band (and the opening acts) but Will just hammered them relentlessly and did a great job on backing vocals. The secret weapon.

It was a great, great, great show.

The tracklist has already been posted, so I won't copy it again... but overall the band put a lot of energy into it.

I saw them last time at their X&Y tour, and they were great then... i think they've further tuned their live sound, however.

They also played a longer set.

They were full of energy the whole time, and "Death and All His Friends" made me cry.

The one gripe I had with the show was the crowd... it was possibly the most unenergetic crowd I've ever seen at a show, and I've been to 30+ shows (I'm only 16, mind you)... the crowd was just dreadful.

No one moved at all for "Life In Technicolor" or "Violet Hill", and I thought maybe it was just 'cause they didn't know the songs as well (an odd excuse, I know)... but then Coldplay hammered out "Clocks", and STILL no one moved.

In ALL of the floor section, I saw maybe five or six people moving around. (The floor section consists of probably 50 rows of 30 people (if not more), to give you an idea of how many were there. And seriously, less than 10 showed any energy.

Which made ME, a diehard Coldplay fan, pretty much lose it.

My anger was at its peak when Chris Martin was out on one of his crowd-walkways and he was LITERALLY 3-4 feet away from all of the people, who were just standing there motionless, without any energy whatsoever.

Also, during "The Hardest Part", almost all of my section (we were on the first section, with pretty good seats) sat down.

It was HORRIBLY frustrating.

I think most of the reason is because it was an old crowd... probably resulting from the ticket prices that were much higher this go around.

So overall, great show, great set, great everything, TOTALLY worth the money. But by far the worst crowd I've ever seen.

Just a question: Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

yeah it was an older crowd (we were the only ones that could afford it!!) so not as many teens and young adults as you'd maybe expect. I remember being one of the few 30+ aged people at DCFC so it is interesting that Coldplay fans seem to be mostly maturing (even as a lot of them are still newer fans).

I'll admit to not rocking out too much, just a little yelling, some head nodding.

It's hard to rock out when its all dedicated seating. When they played at the Filmore you could move around due to the general admission seating and the flat floor. If you rock out in the stands you can fall forward on your face and on a lot of people. Besides the jumbotron was closer then the band itself. It's hard to get super enthusiastic when you're paying $100 to watch live tv.

Seriously though I saw an enthusiastic crowd, maybe not the younger type you'd see waiting for hours by the back exit after the show for an autographb (like in the good old days) but the kind who were happy of the show they were getting, yelling, and hands up any time the lightd came up. I'm sure the people who could afford the main floor did it less from enthusiasm and more from being able to afford it.

When it was a matter of waiting 3 hours in line for the good seats rather then shelling out a $150 a ticket you got a more hardcore fan in front and center. Now you generally get the yuppies there instead these days. But I digress.....

^^^ You made some good points... I think I was just so expecting the crowd that was there last time (mostly college people) that I wanted some more movement.

I think I might've had a bad section, 'cause no one around me seemed to even be singing... :-\

I agree with you guys, the crowd this time was definately older. All of the people in my section were standing up the whole time, but only a couple of them were dancing or showing much enthusiasm, these were the younger ones.

At Coldplay’s not-quite-sold-out concert at the Pepsi Center on Friday night, Chris Martin was manic and playful and athletic and weird and animated and, yes, a little bit over-the-top.

It was refreshing to see that the once-stiff Martin has evolved as a performer – a performer who plays and dances and jumps on stage when he’s not sitting at his piano stool, rocking back and forth like a possessed idiot savant. Yes, this is the same Martin that has been pegged as a pretentious, sometimes-ridiculous artist who is trying a little too hard to be important. The funny thing: This silliness is exactly what Martin needed to balance things out. He made his name on a sappy song called “Yellow,” and while his piano-fronted music was tailor-made for middle-of-the-road FM radio, he always spoke in terms that were much bigger than any of his work.

Some of his aspirations are commendable, including the work he and his band have done for Oxfam. But some of his other aspirations – say, to be the next U2 – have been absurd. Coldplay is Coldplay. They can fill arenas, and they’ll continue to do so as long as they stay prominently on the radio. But it seems like the band got lost in its middle years, obsessed with trying to be something it wasn’t. (You’ve heard bands trying to sound important. Listen to the last Killers record and most parts of Coldplay’s “X&Y.”)

And yet now the band is finally approaching its initial aspirations. Coldplay is a tremendous live band, and while their catalog of music isn’t as strong as their emotional connection in a live arena, it’s steadily getting better. An example of Coldplay transcending its recordings in concert: In a late-set “Politik” on Friday, Martin and his bandmates masterminded a maniacal build that started around 150 degrees, jumped to 350 degrees with the quick flip of the dial, dove back to the 150 degree range and then leaped instantly into hazardous self-cleaning territory.

It was a powerful and loud moment, and it was also risky. That song wasn’t the same track that kicks off the 2002 disc “A Rush of Blood to the Head.” It was a brawnier hulk that demanded an arena singalong, dramatic backlighting and earplugs (depending on where you were sitting). The song was a jagged rush, and it invigorated the adoring audience to sing right along with their heroes.

The show didn’t lack big moments. A straightforward “Clocks” came early in the night and jump-started the audience into singalong mode. Martin loves working that piano stool, and while his gyrations aren’t as sensual as, say, Tori Amos, he looks like an excited little boy as he quickly rocks back and forth on the stool.

“Speed of Sound” is one of the band’s biggest hits, but it’s also one of the most uninventive songs in their catalog. It’s big enough to fill an arena, sure, but it lacks the vitality of “Talk,” which was later performed (as an upbeat remix of the original) on one of the stage’s two jutting runways.

“Viva La Vida” was a big moment, but of the new songs played on Friday, the instrumental “Life in Technicolor” and the moody “Lost!” left the most lasting impressions. “Life in Technicolor” was pure whimsy, and the band was obviously having fun with that one. And “Lost!” is a big song that bursts with life, and it hints at potential greatness from this band.

The supposed greatness of “Fix You” is still lost on me. But I will note that I was in the minority who weren’t feverishly singing along with Martin on that track, which came about halfway through the set. The band’s single-song encore of “Yellow” was welcomed by the crowd.

The band’s production this time out was smart and chic. Two runways stretched from each of the stage’s sides into the audience, and the band wasn’t afraid to use them. The lights were decent, but the video screens – and the six, giant video bulbs that went up and down at various points of the night – enhanced the show massively. A glorious late-show shower of butterfly-shaped confetti didn’t hurt.

“The Scientist” got special play as the band walked off the stage and through the crowd and up some stairs, where a second stage was set up in front of one of the VIP boxes. Chris Martin – dressed in a purple shirt, his signature jacket with multicolored armbands, patchwork pants and some ratty black tennis shoes – joked a lot throughout the night. From this sidestage perch, he made a joke about the people in the front row feeling ripped off (given the band’s temporary relocation) and then settled, talking quickly about having to get into the right mood to play the sad song. The performance of “The Scientist” was simple, unremarkable, but the band was rewarded for always sharing the love and occasionally hamming it up for cell phone pictures.
