Coldplay’s Chris Martin says the key to being cool is … to not be cool?
Chris Martin, Coldplay frontman, husband of Gwyneth Paltrow, father of Moses and Apple, is letting other members do interviews these days. This summer, around the time “Vida la Vida” was released, he did tell the Los Angeles Times some secrets to his success.
“Like millions of people in the world, I can’t listen to Coldplay,” Martin said with a daft wink. “But my reason is professional. You see, I’m always thinking about the next thing. I’m also always looking for something that will inspire the next thing. Look, we’re the one band we can’t plagiarize. So really there’s no point in me listening to it. If I think, ‘Well, that’s good,’ then I’ll want to use it, which won’t work. And if I think, ‘Hey, that’s terrible,’ then I’ll be depressed over breakfast. It’s a classic lose-lose situation.”
If nothing else, Martin has been the first one to pick on himself and his earnest image.
“We’ve never been about being cool, and we never will be. And I think in a way that’s quite cool. But I can’t think about it too much — because if you think about it then you automatically aren’t cool. Wait, I’ve gone too far. I’m not cool. Again.”
No matter what, he knows the band won’t win over a certain constituency that, frankly, has detested it too much and for too long to start listening now. Jon Pareles of the New York Times once called it the “most insufferable band of the decade,” which might say less about the band and more about how fashionable it has become to slag it. Martin said it’s because he wears his heart on his sleeve when he sings.
“If you allow yourself to be vulnerable in your music, people will feel it a lot more,” Martin said. “But a lot more people will also hate it or mock it. It’s almost like a deal with the devil, but I’m happy to take that deal. It doesn’t feel right to me to sing about stuff I don’t believe in.”

Coldplay got together at the Q Awards in Britain in October. From left are Will Champion, Jonny Buckland, Chris Martin and Guy Berryman.
Performing in Coldplay — performing in one of the world’s biggest bands — could get comfy. Too comfy, even.
For bassist Guy Berryman, though, the nightly thrill is intact. Even after all the massive stadium shows, all the mega-festivals, stepping on stage still brings a tingle. That rush of blood, you might call it.
“I don’t get nervous anymore. But I still get that great sense of excitement,” he says. “I love that moment right before we go on, that anticipation of the lights coming down. It never tires for me.”
Coldplay is on a global tour supporting “Vida la Vida or Death and All His Friends,” the British band’s fourth album of moody, edge-of-artsy piano rock.
In a year of music industry struggles, the album is a big-time standout, having enjoyed the biggest debut yet for Berryman, vocalist-pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckman and drummer Will Champion: In the United States alone, the album sold 720,000 copies its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan — more than 300,000 of them on the first day.
With sales of the album continuing to pile up, the band has been on the road nearly nonstop since June, including a U.S. summer sprint.
“We’ve got four records now, so we have to get the balance right between the new album and the old songs people want to hear,” he says. “We try to make it as dynamic as possible from beginning to end. It took us awhile — it took most of the first American tour to knock that into shape. The show pretty much runs in the same order now because it’s working.”
A revamped production team has brought a new visual look to Coldplay’s stage production and introduced what Berryman describes as “a few things people haven’t seen before at other concerts.”
For the decade-old band, life on the road is low-key these days. Berryman says he has learned to pace himself to endure the rigors of touring, eschewing the high life in favor of stints in the gym and daily jogs. Hopping from hotel to hotel, spending long stretches in air-conditioned spaces, it’s too easy to get ill. And “it’s not fun having a cold on tour — you can’t call in sick.”
“We destroyed ourselves a few times by not looking after ourselves — partying every night, staying up late,” he says, recalling the band’s early days. “Certainly, for me in particular, we’re really just trying to keep healthy. It’s that age-old thing: healthy body, healthy mind. I’d have laughed at myself a few years ago if I could hear myself saying that. But it’s true.”
Coldplay will wrap up its year of touring with a series of U.K. dates in December. After a month break, the band will regroup in the studio to begin cutting material for a fifth album.
“The plan, in an ideal world, is to have something finished by the end of 2009,” Berryman says.
That would mark a notably fast turnaround for a band that has been known to take its time between records, including three-year gaps between each of its past three albums.
And fans get a treat in the interim: the Nov. 25 release of “Prospekt’s March,” an eight-song EP of material left over from the “Vida” sessions and a new version of the single “Lost,” remixed by fellow A-lister Jay-Z.
Coldplay has been quick to stress that these aren’t throwaway tracks. Indeed, Berryman says, much of the material could have fit seamlessly on “Vida.”
“We didn’t want to make the album too long. We thought the third record was too long, and we didn’t want to make that mistake again. But these songs were too good just to be B-sides on singles,” he says. “It’s kind of meant to be an amendment to ‘Vida la Vida.’ We wanted people to hear that record as a stand-alone first and not bombard them. We’re really proud of it.”

YouTube - Coldplay - Yellow
Above: "Yellow" isn't "Fake Plastic Trees" and Coldplay isn't Radiohead, but we'll be at Sprint Center tonight anyway.
I recently asked an acquaintance whether he was going to tonight’s Coldplay show. He gave me an over-my-dead-body look, as if I’d asked him whether he watches “Full House” (http://www.tv.com/full-house/show/1026/summary.html) reruns. I suppose Chris Martin is correct (http://www.kansascity.com/entertainment/story/885777.html): His band isn’t cool, whatever that means anymore.
It may not be cool, but in my book Coldplay doesn’t really qualify as a guilty pleasure, either. Its music has enough merits to justify — instead of excuse or rationalize — my interest, which is somewhere closer to casual than devout.
I became a fan almost accidentally. I liked a song or two on the “Parachutes” album but hadn’t yet warmed up to “A Rush of Blood To The Head” when I caught its show at Memorial Hall in January 2003. That concert was a confluence of circumstances that left me ripe for persuasion: I was grieving over something, and Coldplay was at the point where it had outgrown venues as small as Memorial Hall.
That night the place was packed; the band rocked; the crowd (3,500) was euphoric; and several of the songs got under my skin and inside me, especially the deep-blue ballads like “The Scientist” and “Clocks.”
I’ve got a soft spot for Brit rock anyway, so after that evening, I climbed aboard the Coldplay train, fully aware that this band wasn’t as adventurous as the groups it can vaguely resemble, in a homogenized way: mainly Radiohead and U2 (although the distance between Coldplay and U2 has narrowed recently).
Since then, a backlash has ensued. Here’s what the Chicago Tribune said about Martin: “(his) falsetto fragility and good-guy mannerisms make him the rock equivalent of a warm glass of milk and bedtime cookies.”
And here’s how Pitchfork described Coldplay in its review of its latest album, “Viva La Vida”: “a grandma-friendly, Radiohead-normalizing, disarmingly polite rock band led by a man who sounds like he’s still yearning for puberty perhaps.”
True, I suppose. Chris Martin’s lyrics could use some help. He seems smarter than: “Tears stream down your face/When you lose something you cannot replace.” It might help if Martin could conjure more abstractions and artsy-fartsy-ness or more soul, but I’m not sure he has it in him. A writer for the Village Voice wrote: “Martin’s too sweet, too soothing. … He tries hard to imagine how it feels to feel like you’re dying, but he can’t evoke it.”
I’m guessing that’s where the deepest objections to his band start: with the words, which fail him more than occasionally. The Radiohead-lite thing doesn’t help either; nor, I’m sure, does his marriage to a Hollywood starlet who used to date Brad Pitt.
He has taken some strides to break out in a few directions: collaborating with Kanye West and Jay-Z; hiring Brian Eno to produce “La Vida,” which is a step up from “X&Y” and includes several tracks made for the arenas.
I’m not sure any of that will remedy what seems to ail Coldplay’s stock in the hipster markets. And it doesn’t matter. I’ve stopped keeping track of what I’m supposed to like, stopped trying to force myself to like what’s been ordained as fashionable, hip or “art.”
Obviously, some bands (Radiohead, Tool) are in this game for bigger and deeper and more substantive reasons than others. To them go the spoils: a vaunted, long-lasting reputation.
But I’m happy to admit I like songs or performers who don’t get respect from the underground, whether it’s the Killers, Pink or Coldplay. Sometimes it’s enough for a song or a band to be merely entertaining.

First time poster here. I'll be at the K.C. show tonight. First Coldplay concert and I can't wait!

Anyone know what the set list will be like? Does Coldplay tend to play the same songs at each show during a tour or do they change up the set list each night?
Pretty new to the Coldplay scene. I fell in love with them when I happened to watch their Storytellers show on MHD about a year ago.

Destination Kansas City. We rolled up at the Sprint Center, Kansas City today. Some of these arenas have quite grand and strange designs. This one struck me that if you shone some flashlights on it, it would become a crystal ball. At the moment though, it just looks a bit like a glittering fruit bowl you might find in a certain Swedish megastore..
It was another mammoth drive yesterday. I sympathise for the truck and bus drivers when we do long-hauls like that. It’s an incredible country to tour. You drive for as long as it would take to cross the whole of some large countries, just to get to the next city. Weird when you start to see 7 or 8 hours as a ’short drive’.
Today we are on the first of 2 in a row. We have 9 more shows out here before we tread back across the pond. Strange to think that Coldplay have only done one show so far in their home country.. When we have done over 50 already this year.
Back in Atlanta, we had a great night with Oxfam. The volunteer group really stuck together and worked as a team. All of them seeming over the moon to be helping Oxfam and eagerly anticipating their free Coldplay show. They all got the chance to see Chris Martin perform ‘Green Eyes’ for the first time in the whole tour. A good treat for their efforts. I think there is a chance of some more set changes soon with the release of ‘Prospekts March’.
So what inspires us to get involved? Coldplay have certainly inspired thousands, possibly millions of people to get involved with Oxfam’s work to overcome poverty. I wonder how many more bars of Fairtrade chocolate have been eaten, since the start of the Make Trade Fair Campaign. How many people have switched to Fairtrade coffee. How many people have helped train a teacher through an Oxfam Unwrapped gift.
I have been inspired by all sorts of things. Seeing people come together to call for change. Listening to Eddie Izzard narrate a recycling advert. Adding my face to the Control Arms ‘Million Faces’ petition. Seeing over 101’000 people at UK festivals in 2007, sign up to an Oxfam campaign to combat Climate Change. Running marathons surrounded by people raising money for charity by running 26.2 miles. Listening to family and friends debating presidential candidates. Working in rural Madagascar, to help build school benches and collecting drinking water from rivers. Whatever inspires us, whether it be a symbol on a piano on a Coldplay stage, seeing an advert on TV, talking to a relative, joining a petition online, speaking to an Oxfam campaigner.. Small actions change lives. Be moved. Be involved. Because you’ve got power, and it’s time for justice.

Here's a telltale sign of consumer spending shifts - rock star department.
Those of us with a certain weakness for vaguely alternative British rock might be tempted to catch the Coldplay concert tonight.
Well, the good folks at Ticketmaster are showing a pretty fair number of seats available in the more expensive lower bowl at Sprint Center. At mid-morning, for example, there were six seats together in Section 102, for a face value of $77.50 apiece, plus the ever-present $14.65 service charge.
In contrast, there are far fewer available in the cheaper upper seats.
No doubt folks are pinching pennies across the economy, particularly for discretionary stuff like rock concerts. Today's Coldplay ticket supply situation just might suggest folks are trading down in price, if not out of the building altogether.
As for me, I'll pass on Coldplay this time around. After all, I've already seen them twice. And while they're nice, I've already made a substantial investment in ACDC come January.
If indeed we're on a highway to hell, economically speaking, I'll be more in the mood to mark it with Angus Young than a sensitive type like Chris Martin.

Kind of sad to not see "Swallowed In the Sea" and "Til Kingdom Come" on the set list. I was really hoping to hear those two. (I'll keep my fingers crossed that Carlaatje is right and they add a couple tonight.)

:( Darn, I miss the nights and staying up and waiting for the reports to come rolling in.
Just got back and it was awesome. Can't recall the entire set list, but it seems to more or less mirror the ones from the previous dates in other cities. They did play a song early on (I don't recall the name) and Chris said something to the effect of "First time in America for that one."
Coolest part was that my wife and I were literally 5 feet from the little stage they set up out in the audience ("The Scientist" performance). Wooooooo!!!! And I got a high-5 from Chris as he ran back to the big stage. :D Got some cool pics on my cell phone camera. Mostly of the backs of their heads, but some profile pictures. Now, if I can just figure out how to get them from my camera to a computer.....

Sorry. It wasn't a song that I recognized. Maybe someone else who was at the show can jump in with some details.
IIRC it was a slower number. Maybe just Chris on the piano.

section 231 ... I'm only a casual fan but I went because I had bought my girlfriend tickets since CP is her favorite band. I was impressed, though, it was fun.
and just a note: SPRINT CENTER IS IN MISSOURI, NOT KANSAS.
not that anyone really cares and I know Coldplay is from England, so I give them a of a pass on this, but there IS a KANSAS CITY IN MISSOURI.
Little known fact: Missouri was the first Kansas City and, because we had so much going on back in the Jazz-era and whatnot, Wyandotte County Kansas actually took the name Kansas City so that people coming from the West would stop in Kansas first, thinking it was Missouri.
Just a little FYI in case Coldplay reads these boards.

glass of water is definitely on the setlist, but i didn't notice if they had an extra guitarist or not, it was pretty early on and i was still in a bit of shock. i mean i'm obviously a big enough fan to hang around here, and there was one row of seats between me and the stage, it was unbelievable. i'll try to upload pictures later...i have to work in 5 hours.

By the way, the people that are "calling out" the Coldplayers in Kansas City...there might not be many on this site, but the crowd was really good last night.
I had a good time with oxfam getting out information (I Sold my floor seats just to have free seats and that paid for food, parking, etc. and lots of extra money). The Oxfam coordinator said we had over 700 signatures. A lot of people I talked to said they had already signed up, or had heard about it, or just wanted to take a flier.
The concert was amazing, and I will confirm once again, Glass of Water was played in America for the first time.

Cry about it. Coldplay isn't the first to mess it up, and won't be the last. The majority of people believe that Kansas City is in Missouri...And who can blame them, considering it says Kansas in it.

I didn't see one.
It was my first time hearing the song and thought it was excellent. Crowds never know what to do when they hear new material, but since it was so early in the set, no one ran for the bathrooms or the concessions. It got a nice response.
Overall the show was very good with a decent sound mix where you could hear Chris' vocals. Sometimes, at the Sprint Center the sound can get a little muddy. I was in the top level, which I learned, is a horrible mistake. The seats are awful.

To the question at hand: is Coldplay cool? Cool enough, that is, for a discerning, punk-bred, 45-collecting, uncomfortable-shoes-wearing music blog reader such as you?
Well, if you’re reading this review at all, most likely you already love Coldplay and you’re just waiting for me to (a) report on awesomeness of band and give the setlist so you can feel affirmed, or (b) dis Coldplay for being loved by squares so that you can eviscerate me in the comments.
But on the chance that you are a certified hip dude who thinks that Coldplay is the Target of major bands, let’s look at a few attributes of the band. First of all, these guys are British. Next, they have guitars -- lots of them -- plus lasers and glowing orbs and waterfalls of butterfly confetti when they play live in enormous, sold-out arenas. Feeling like a chump yet? No? Alright, one of them – the good-looking one – is married to a famous, beautiful actress, and they have a child named for fruit. The other members of the band are fruit – two grapefruits and a pummelo, to be precise.
They dress like extras from Les Miserables.
They’re wildly successful and play songs that boom in your miserable skull for years.
Get the picture, hipster douche? They’re cooler than you. On to the show.
The first words out of Chris Martin’s mouth, and people were singing along. It was a new song, “Violet Hill,” but never mind that; people were prepared.
(White people, of course. Many of them hot and svelte. In fact, one of these hot-svelte people asked me and the people around me before the show began, “Do you smell Plato?” “Plato?” people asked. “Yeah, Plato – everyone’s been saying they smell it!” I leaned over and asked, “Plato or Play-Doh?” “That’s it!” he said.)
As the band rolled through a set weighted on the Viva la Vida side (not surprising, as it’s their richest, most musically sophisticated one ever) and peppered with songs from X&Y (three years ago) and A Rush of Blood to the Head (SIX years ago) with maybe just a sprinkle of Parachutes (like, 30 years ago), the stage setup moved from simple and livingroomlike to A Space Odyssey. At first, the only screen being fed by the two closed-circuit video cams down front was on a tiny antique TV on a pedestal. The backdrop was the Renaissance battle scene from the cover of the album: goddess with tits out, Frenchmen with muskets. Then, the big orbs descended from the ceiling, flashing marble patterns that eventually became images fed from the cameras. Later, a giant screen came down, showing chopped and screwed images from the stage.
Musically, the sound was BIG. Way bigger than four guys with one instrument and microphone apiece. How's that? Backing tracks, that's how. For all of Chris Martin’s wide-eyed, sweating-on-piano, knees-bent-running-about charisma and his switching between piano and craftpainted guitars, live, Coldplay’s music tends to plod along, dependent on the musical prowess of three-fifths of its members (Martin, drummer Will Champion, the aforementioned backing tracks) and is all but weighed down by the other two-fifths: the guitarist and bassist, a.k.a. two dudes who should be absolutely thrilled to flash their chops and strut around before crowds of thousands but who look and play, most of the time, like cranky old fudders stuck playing at a fairground on the off season in Blackpool.
In short, I was shocked to learn that Coldplay doesn’t do bona fide live versions of its songs.
Johnny Buckland, guitarist, did have his moments, most notably when he and Martin wound up on the stage-left platform that jutted a dozen rows in the audience during “Clocks,” playing off each other like toy soldiers reenacting the French invasion of Russia. But let's stop a minute: When critics compare Coldplay with U2, they seem to overlook the fact that Buckland and the Edge have only a rhythmic-echo sensibility and a chorus pedal or two in common. Buckland is the diet, caffeine-free Edge. (Likewise, for those who insist on comparing Coldplay to Radiohead, God is in the guitars.) He even flubbed up one of his only spotlight moments, the jig-like riff from “Strawberry Swing,” which, oddly, occasioned one of the only smiles he and Martin shared the whole show.
And what’s with the frownies? Even when the four dismounted the stage and wound their way high, high into the crowd to do two remote acoustic numbers – “Scientist” and the delightful, Champion-sung “Death Will Never Conquer” – all three except for Martin looked like schoolchildren forced to learn recorder (only in this case, it was guitar, mandolin and resonator guitar; why not, like, just one guitar and four guys singing and having fun?)
Maybe they’ve been on tour too long. Or maybe they just had an off night.
In the end though, as a whole, they ended up sounding fine and putting on a good show. They’re Coldplay after all. Cool as hell.

Personal Bias: I like guitarists who can make it howl and move.
Random Detail: Coldplay has sold somewhere around 40 million albums since forming in 1998. Oh, wait, that's not random at all.
By the Way: I came down with a cold right in the middle of this show. For real.

Hello! This is the first time I've ever posted a message on here. Just wanted to say that I was at the Sprint Center last night for Coldplay & it was absolutely fantastic! It's been 3 years since they were here last (I'm sure that goes for pretty much everybody) so it was a long wait. Especially once the concert got postponed from July 9th to November 13th!!! But it was definitely worth it. We were in section 106, row 10 so we had awesome seats. And when they came out in the audience to play "The Scientist" & "Death Will Never Conquer," they were right in the next section so I got some incredible pictures!
Production was incredible for the concert. The amazing video, the confetti, the lazers...everything. Can't imagine how much work goes into each & every show.
It was slightly disappointing that Chris didn't talk as much as he usually seems to. Don't get me wrong, it's great that they probably play more songs that way, but I, for one, always enjoy listening to their hilarious stories! And being that Coldplay is the best band EVER, it's always incredible when they make you feel like you know them personally by talking to you.
I have to say, I got a huge kick out of the fact that Chris kept calling it "Kansas" instead of "Missouri"! I'm from Kansas so I loved it & like someone else pointed out, the name of the city is Kansas City! Plus, when they were here last, for the X & Y tour, they really were in Kansas, in Bonner Springs at Sandstone.
Thank you also for clarifying that the guys played "Green Eyes" last night, not "The Hardest Part". I can't believe someone would not like that song! It's one of my favorites! And I was sooooo excited to hear "In My Place" too!
(Sorry about the novel! I have a tendency to do that!)

The biggest post-1990s band from Britain that doesn't give away its music came to Sprint Center on Thursday. And a large crowd was on hand with a loud, long and warm greeting.
And though it may not know its U.S. geography ("Thank you, Kansas"), Coldplay knows its own history: That's the first time we've played this in the U.S., said lead singer Chris Martin after singing "Glass of Water." That one will have its place of prominence in Coldplay trivia and lore; Thursday night, it was the rare lukewarm moment during a show loaded with bright highlights. (Nobody knew the song.)
The rest of the setlist visited more familiar material from each of the band's four full-length albums, none more frequently than the latest, "Viva La Vida ..." This was the rare show when the crowd welcomed a lot of the more recent songs as warmly as the older ones. The title track to the new album got one of the loudest reactions of the night.
Martin played his usual affable, humble self. He apologized for postponing the show back in July. He stopped the show to say hello to a 7-year-old boy in the crowd (and crack wise about the Jonas Brothers; read the mom's blogpost here). And he chastised himself after he muffed the start to "Green Eyes."
The sound in the Sprint Center was OK to good: At times there wasn't enough bottom -- the bass and kick drums disappeared in the mix. But the volume felt right and the vocals sounded good most of the night. The light show was nice, too; so was the confetti that rained on the floor during the start of the encore (it looked like falling leaves).
Speaking of vocals, there were plenty of big sing-alongs, starting with "In My Place" and especially during "Fix You," when the band stepped back and let the crowd take over the final chorus. Other highlights: The techno-mashup of "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" and "Talk"; "Politik," which sounded more invigorated than usual; and the short acoustic set that took place high in a lower-level section towards the back of the arena. (Although I could have done without the Billy Ray Cyrus bit in the middle of "The Scientist.")
They ended the 95-minute show with their biggest hit, "Yellow," which prompted the evening's loudest and longest response and sing-along. For a moment, Martin stopped to enjoy the enormous chorale singing back at him. It was that kind of a show: The crowd and the band spent all night entertaining each other.

"Did ya see him? Chris Martin talked to my Pablo!!! Right after "Talk", he stopped and talked to Pablo from his piano! OH my gosh...Pablo is sound asleep right now WITH the drumsticks that he gave him....They had a little conversation and Pablo is over the moon. All these people were high fivin' him as we were leaving and we didn't know it but Pablo was on the big screen during the whole conversation! He's SO HAPPY, and that was so cool that Chris Martin did that. SO COOL. He asked him how old he is and told him that it's really cool that he came to the concert and that he's really happy that a 7 year old kid likes his band!!!! My little guy told me as we were leaving..."Mom, Chris Martin knows I'm a person"....."yep", I said.."he sure does". The drummer then gave his drumsticks to the roadie guy who came over and gave them to Pablo....and a few minutes later he brought over Chris Martin's playlist from his piano! Oh my god...I just can't believe it...for pablo, I can't believe that this happened for him. He's a music head. His sister is an academic and he's a music head. I decided to take him to this concert because I want to support his "thing", and inspire him...and inspired he is. He told me that he's going to sleep with the drumsticks every night...so that "I get Chris Martins germs"...hahahaha! my darling boy. Did anybody go? Did any of you guys see him???"

Ahhh, thats really awesome and really special:D
I emailed all of my pics of the acoustic set (not 10 feet from my seats) to myself and, not surprisingly, they're pretty damn blurry/grainy. Oh, well, I suppose that's what I deserve for carrying around a 5-year old cellphone. :furious:
I'll upload them to Photobucket later and post the best one or two here just in case anyone's interested.

That review,a few posts back, by Jason Harper was pretty negative. He said everyone except Chris looked like they didnt want to be there. I love coldplay, but many times at interviews I feel so uncomfortabel because they do look miserable...
And also about the backtracking.Dont other bands backtrack??
What did you all think of that review.???

Critic's Notebook
Personal Bias: I like guitarists who can make it howl and move.
Random Detail: Coldplay has sold somewhere around 40 million albums since forming in 1998. Oh, wait, that's not random at all.
By the Way: I came down with a cold right in the middle of this show. For real.

This is my first chance at a computer in two days, so I thought I'd say that the Kansas City show was awesome.
I wasn't much for Sleepercar as openers, but I thought Jon Hopkins' act was impressive. The video that went along with his live mixing was pretty cool.
We had seats in the middle of the first section on the floor, and it was definitely closer than I expected. When they did the techno God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, they moved over right in front of us, and we ran up to the edge of the extended stage. I was standing right in front of the piano and directly below little 7 year old Pablo. That was so cool of Chris to talk to him! He commented on how Pablo would one day be a bigger pop star than Coldplay and The Jonas Brothers. That last one got a huge reaction from the crowd. I loved Glass of Water, and I had downloaded a bootleg when it first came around, so I was ready to sing.
That scathing review by Jason Harper a few pages back was unfair. The only person not smiling by the end of the night was Guy, which he doesn't seem too fond of doing lately. I thought Johnny really got into it, and did a great job. And I am constantly amazed at the way reviewers slip in comments about Gwyneth, Apple and Moses, but don't actually talk about Coldplay's music. But they can throw in a few comparisons to U2 and Radiohead.
All in all, the night was fantastic. And I am many, many butterflies the richer.

We had floor seats but they were way in the back. When the butterflies fell, the fans sucked them forward over the crowd! I had my hands up and I was yelling "Just one! All I want is ONE!" and a few fluttered within a couple feet of my fingertips, but there were none close enough to catch! :(

Great picture of the 4 of them, Tyson! I love it! I was in the lower level section & I got a picture of them bowing, but it, of course, came out a little blurry. I'm always afraid of getting tickets for the floor because I think I won't be able to see very well without being elevated above the people in front of me. What did you think of being on the floor?

My friends and i were section 229, row 7 seats 1-6 until we got upgraded by the nice fella. we even sat down and at about 7:40 bumped into the guy that was with the band who then moved us to second row. it was so surreal. we were moved to floor, row d, seats 15-20. row a was off to the left, row b was off to the right and row c was actually the front row.

well first row was only about 4-5 feet from the stage, and the stage was probably 5 feet high, so they were looking straight up the entire time. we were probably 7-8 feet from the stage so i think second row was actually ideal over first. but compared to where i was, the floor was unbelievable.

Coldplay performed to an arena packed with enthused fans Nov. 13 at Kansas City's Sprint Center in the Power and Light District.
The globe-trotting, British soft-rock group took the stage a little after 9 p.m., following two opening acts - a country-tinged alt-rock group from Texas, and a DJ who laid down beats in sync with an acid-trip-esque cartoon video.
Fans rose from their seats and cheered as the first chords of "Life in Technicolor," the opening track on the band's most recent release, "Viva la Vida," began to echo through the arena. Chris Martin and company took the stage to fill in the song's synth orchestration with their own instrumentation - Martin doing acoustic guitar duties as well as vocals, Johnny Buckland on lead guitar, Guy Berryman on bass and Will Champion banging the drums.
After getting the new album's first single "Violet Hill" out of the way, they launched into a performance of "Clocks," as a stunning laser light show dazzled the audience. Then came the big surprise: only a few songs into the set, Coldplay performed the new song "Glass of Water" from their upcoming EP "Prospekt's March" (due for release Nov. 25 in the States).
"That's the first time in America for that one," Martin said, causing the crowd to erupt in cheers and applause.
The band continued to impress, as they moved on to the hit single "Speed of Sound," which they played in the dark, as huge, multi-colored glowing globes descended from the ceiling. When they finally paused to say hello to the audience, Martin explained he had "heard you have to play six songs in Kansas before stopping to say hi," making the age-old mistake of not realizing which side of the state line his band was on.
Rather than booing, as Missourians are want to do when artists make such a flub, the audience chose to overlook his oversight and cheered him on all the same.
As the evening progressed, the four-piece squeezed onto a small floor-lit platform to play an electro-beat influenced medley of "God Put a Smile on Your Face" and "Talk." This moment, as well as a trip to another small stage in the back of the arena for some folk-infused versions of "The Scientist" and "Death Will Never Conquer" (complete with steel guitar, mandolin and harmonica), highlighted the band's ability to make even the Sprint Center seem like an intimate venue.
Martin's gentle character and British charm showed through in his banter. At one point he singled out a seven-year-old in the audience to thank him for coming to the show. "Wow, seven years old and coming to a Coldplay concert!" he said. "I wasn't going to Coldplay concerts when I was seven. I predict big things for you."
Martin also likes to check in on the audience regularly, asking, "You okay out there?" throughout the night. There's no cocky, rock-star ego from these guys.
After playing a fine selection of songs from their catalog (including their biggest hit to date, "Viva la Vida," and their latest singles "Lost!" and "Lovers in Japan"), the boys pulled out Viva's final track, "Death and All His Friends," and made a trite effort to pretend that was the end of the set.
After only a few moments, however, they retook the stage and banged out their breakthrough hit, "Yellow," much to the crowd's delight, as the stage lights bathed the audience in the song's namesake color. It was a triumphant ending to a performance that managed to be both grand and intimate at the same time.

Wow.... thanks everyone for sharing all of the pictures. I was in section 121, not great but it wasn't that bad of spot. I thought the video on the screens was magnificent and I did have a really good view of the falling confetti, which was beautiful.

Thank you for all your nice comments on my pictures! I'm just so glad so many turned out good because I hate using my dad's camera.
My day started at the Sprint Center and ended in the Sprint Center. I got to the arena at 12:15 to wait for the guys. I had a half finished poster to keep me busy until the guys got there.
At around 1 or so, a nice gentleman comes out from the loading dock and stops to read my sign. He asks me what is says and I say, "My year of Coldplay and the dates I've seen them at." He says bye and leaves down the street. I see a few other roadies including John (I think?), a driver. Some stop to read my sign others just say hi. The nice gentleman comes back from his walk and asks me how long I've been there. At the time it was about 1:30. I told him a little over an hour. He then tells me that I'm the most dedicated fan he's seen so far. Pft. I told him that he obviously hadn't been outside in Detroit or Florida because he would have never said that. (We already know who I'm talking about;)).
I keep working on my sign and he comes back with a COLDPLAY TOTE BAG! I thank him profusely and he goes back into the loading dock. At around 3, the boys arrived. I couldnt really get my sign up in time because a really annoying group of people came to see the band in. They didnt know shit about them and by the time I saw the boys pulling up, only Chris and Jonny saw it. Chris waved and Jonny smiled. To be honest, just that made my day.
I waited around for an hour or so. No one came out but the gentleman who does Coldplay's dressing room. I think Mel and Lori spoke to him in Florida. (I mentioned it to him and he remembered you girls!)
I went in to the arena a bit early to see if I can met Pete. He's absolutely wonderful, not to mention cute. Here's my picture:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c383/Gianna_Logston/Coldplay/Kansas%20City/DSCN8821.jpg
I was seated 3 rows off of Guy's ramp which you can see from my photos. My favorite part of the show was ironically, In My Place. I know not many people have noticed this but this is the song where guy goes on his ramp to get a good look at the crowd while the lights are up.
I held up my banner and Guy smiled soo wide I thought his face was going to split when he spotted it. I. ALMOST. DIED. on the spot. Seriously, when he smiles at you. Just you. You feel like you're in heaven. He's so beautiful when he smiles, he should never stop.:D:sneaky:
The rest of the concert was a blur up until Strawberry Swing. After all, me & Guy had eye sex. It takes a lot out of a girl;):wink3::laugh3:
By the time SS was played, I was getting ready for B-stage. I went down the stairs along the barrier to get a front row seat for the boys. Nothing can compare to being that close to the boys.
Again, I couldnt stop smiling but now it was because they were ALL within 5 feet of me. The little boy Pablo, and his mother were two people away from me. Chris was such a sweetheart to stop what he was doing and talk to him. I basically melted. After he got done talking with Pablo, I knew we were either gonna get The Hardest Part or Green Eyes. I took it upon myself to yell "Green Eyes!" and hope he hears. We'll never know whether he listened or not, but I like to tell myself he did.:D
Next part in a bit...
