Many thanks folks. I was dreading the whole because the snippet we had before wasn't very promising out of context, so I'm extremely pleased with this, in fact I think it's great!

Very interesting - quite fractured, bizarre and psychadelic. Evokes the Beatles yet again imo. I still think they may have missed a trick not making the epic story-driven vid that the song almost demands, but without taking that route they couldnn't really have bettered this.

I agree! It feels like they feel comfortable being themselves for the first time in very long time. :)
And I definetely think this album is going to be one of their best, If not the best. It just feels like they've been very hungry to re-invent themselves, and to take a step away from the radiofriendly patterns of X&Y, and in my opinion that's a good thing. And it feels like they've been able to not feel so pressured, that they've felt a bit more free to do what they want and just ignore peoples expectations. I definetely think that Brian and Markus has helped a lot to. Can't wait til June! :( :lol:

I had really pictured it being an story-video, kind of following they lyrics and a lot of white snow and cold environments (even do I knew they had shot in in Sicily). But I actually liked this video, even if it wasn't as I had pictured it. :)

its hard not to agree that they could have done more with this video, but i think one of the great things about them is that they dont take themselves too seriously... they are arguably the biggest rock band in the world, and yet the video for their first single looks like a home movie of them messing around in the backyard... i think it rocks.

Just watched the video, after a LONG wait, I was lurking on Tuesday night waiting for it but no luck (even after k28!) In my opinion it was well worth the wait, I love the way it's so abstract, I think that really fits the song, and I adore the close ups of all of them, especially Will :cool: The way it flits between different scenes is really good aswell, it really works for me! first impression: the fellas were OBVIOUSLY having fun. haha.

it reminded me of the RHCP's video for "Give It Away" with all of them walking around and moving about.
and especially with the black and white close up shot of Chris and the magnifying glass mirroring Kiedis' close up shot. it was a funny touch

but the ending is what did it for me.

Totally agree! First watch I was like THIS is the video we've been anxiously waiting for?!? but then I watched again, and it seems to totally fit with their silly sense of humor. LOVE all the crazy headbanging :laugh3: and also Chris's magnified gapped teeth. I find it endearing to not care about your flaws...They know how silly the headbanging is and I'm sure it took a zillion takes to keep from totally cracking up.

Overall, I like the video!! It's not their best, but it's not unbearable! I must say, Will and Guy with those drums were HOT. :p And Chris with the hammer, haha. I like the edginess and rawness of the overall video...like they are not trying to make it flow and be smooth. Like it's cut up just a little to add more character.

You're far from the only one! This could have been a sure-fire award-winning cinematic and deeply moving production, and I think they missed a trick there - in some ways the song deserves exactly that. Oh well, it leaves plenty of space for some of us to produce our own fan-vids, could be much fun indeed! :)

Having seen it a few more times now I think the way they've done it is pretty clever. Low-budget, but brilliant, and as others have said vids don't matter so much now. It's sufficiently indie and arty that the places where vids do still matter (MTV etc) will show it as much as they can. It also gets away from that commercial ethos that they clearly now resent being present for x&y. It's much earthier, underground.

I particularly love how the video makes the song feel longer somehow, probably because there are so many shots and things happening. My one grumble with VH is that it's too short (because I love it so!)
I always want the guitar to kick back in again at the end for a reprise, but of course it never comes :(

Roll on the fan vids, can't wait to see some!

<edit> Oh and I think the leak we had before's been edited quite a lot in the final release, no? I hated the leak but love this, I think it's changed an awful lot for the better. Hope I'm right on that or I'm just going crazy with all the excitement of the new material!

When they first appear walking across the hill in the formation and Chris checks behind him, ask any serviceman they will tell you that is a typical patrol formation and to have a guy at the back checking the rear.
The drums Will and Guy are banging are old military drums used in marching bands hundreds of years ago when soldiers used to march to battle.
The part when they are all round the piano singing, it is in fast forward just like old footage from world war 1, so many films of soldiers gathered round a piano singing and dancing.
And at the end when Chris is in the snow to me that looks like a wounded soldier trying to make it back and struggling. Maybe im looking into to much.
And there clothes aswell very heavily military influenced, the epelets on the shoulders, Chris's trousers with the stripe down the side are very very 1700's military style. Say what you will but seems to me the video was planned to be hinting war or soldiers in some shape or form.
Very well directed video and definetly interesting, I think Chris walking down a street singing was getting old, not that Fix you was bad is still one of my favourites.

Lots of us remember that! Lol unless I'm way too old for this forum at the grand old age of 32 and I'm the only one who grew up on repeats of those grand old Monkees :)

There sure are influences there, but I see more of the Beatles (who also did a lot of that stuff) especially with the psychadelic, fractured feel (see the Strawberry Fields vid for more of that) and the military alter-egos (Sgt Peppers).

<edit> Glen, you are absolutely spot on, don't worry! Another point - and perhaps it'sd just me, but I worry that the military theme's going to be too forced on the album. It was great on VH, but VLV also hammers it home. I just hope it's more subtle on the other tracks, but the album cover (though it's fine in itself) doesn't fill me with confidence...

I like it, but I think it was because my expectations were low... I mean, from last album the only video that I really liked was Talk, Speed of Sound and Fix You were boring and unoriginal to me, and The Hardest Part... well, one of the worst videos that I have seen in my whole life! So I wasn't expecting anything exceptional this time.

If there is going to be a "Viva la Vida" video, I really expect something epic for that one, I mean that song has such a great potential for a spectacular video, that if it turns to be another simple, boring, band-focused video I'm gonna be really disappointed.

I know a lot of people hate it, but I actually love it! It's EXACTLY what Chris was talking about when he said that instead of getting bigger, they wanted to get better. The parts on the stairs with all the drumming I didn't care so much for, but all the stuff on the top of the hill (;)), them just goofing around having fun playing and singing I think is what a music video is all about! It did remind me of something the Beatles or the Monkees would do. Sped up video of them playing and laughing. I think my favorite bits are the close ups and Chris walking in the snow. The colors (or lack there of) are very bland and painterly. I can't wait to own this one!!

p.s. somewhat off subject, but I just didn't know where else to ask. But has anyone in the states received their copy of the NME magazine yet? I emailed them twice regarding it and have yet to receive an answer. I know I'm probably being impatient and it's still a few days off, but I'd really like to have it soon.
