View Full Version : Life in Technicolor: what do you think?

Right, so the 'rough cut' is out there. This thread's all about what those of us who have heard it think. NO LINKS!
I love it. Really up beat and different sounding too. The synths at the start are gorgeous. Like the "oh oh ohh!" bit at the end, sounds a bit like the Police. I like it more than Violet Hill, Lost? and ASARY. I think VlV shades it because it's more of a developed song. Anyway, what do you think?

I view LiT as being in a separate category from other Coldplay songs, just because the version we've heard (which I'm guessing will be the final version) is without lyrics. I know some people don't like purely instrumental tracks, but to me they're more "perfect" than other music because it's pure emotion with no real message. Viva la Vida is Chris Martin at the top of his lyrical game, so having a track without lyrics isn't disappointing to me at all.

As an opener track I'd give it a perfect 10/10. It does the same thing Don't Panic did for Parachutes, Square One did for X&Y, and Politik did for AROBTTH... but it's happier and more upbeat than all those other songs. Maybe to contrast with Cemeteries of London which immediately follows.

Best of the new ones, I think.

Absolutely love it. I can't wait to hear it with lyrics, because it's so beautiful already - and I'm anxious to see how it turns out with Chris' voice added. Gorgeous melody, just great and pure!

haha amen to that.....it's very difficult with such easy access to the video! I almost gave in, but ended up hitting play, clicking in the middle....seeing them play...and then I clicked out!! I want to hear it all for the first time when the album comes out!!

The actual song on the album will likely have lyrics, according to this rolling stone article,

"Life in Technicolor": Acoustic-guitar driven and jangly, this is one of the few tracks that seems built from the Coldplay template of songs like "Don't Panic," only a bit more, well, panicked: "Baby it's a violent world," Martin sings.

I recently heard that Life In Technicolor appears as an instrumental song in the album. So... looks like they decided to remove the lyrics.

I'm amazed I'm not the only one who hasn't heard it. I have an mp3, but I'm holding out til it's unlocked on the website and I can enjoy it legitimately. (If I can stand to wait that long...)

I could not resist I saw the video :embarassed: For those who have not listened to it: Expect a nice song, it's different as the others song but is the more coldplayish of the new album yet. I'm not giving more detalis because I'm sure you all love suspense and surprises

Usually I'm all up for moral as well, which is why I bought "Viva la Vida" legally and all, even though it was up here.. But there can't be anything wrong about listening to LIT on youtube once, and seeing the video I can't see "on the album".. It looks official to me, don't know why it popped up on youtube though..

Anyway, what I'm saying is: there's no need to degrade any "proper Coldplay fan", which I am, just because we don't share identical attitudes. I'm always the one telling my friends not to download Coldplay stuff illegally because it even kinda "hurts" me, but I'd never judge them on it or anything, so.. please don't do that either.

And something else: The 'Extras' site doesn't work for me, so I can't properly judge what actually pops up there. Gotta stick around on here to find out..

Exactly. I enjoy the suspense, so I'm waiting for Coldplay.com to unlock it, but I downloaded Lost and VLV since I'm buying the hardcopy of the album and can't get them any other way for now. It's the same as In Rainbows. I downloaded it for free until I could buy it here...sort of 'borrowed' it for a few weeks, lol. Some people download, others don't, and it's not 'wrong' imo. I'm just seeing if I can hold out:).

i said "best of the new songs," even though i think VLV is slightly better. but really, i can't explain how much i love BOTH of those songs. it just makes me so happy, so proud to be a coldplay fan when they make music like this. i love epic cinematicness, and that's what this song is for me. i'd like it if anyone did it, but i smile a little every time that i remember it's coldplay.

i know that this is a rough cut, but i kind of hope it's not too too different than this on the album, and i can't believe i'm saying this, but i hope it stays instrumental. i used to not really want an instrumental track from coldplay because i thought it would be a waste of chris's beautiful voice, but when their instrumentals are this good, i have no qualms.

isn't it ironic that by placing yourself in the "proper fan" category, the effect then is that anyone who is a massive fan, and wants to hear it badly, can't; and anyone who doesn't want to hear it that much, can! twisted logic imo.
funny how our sense of morality kicks in at the most inappropriate of moments...

I agree. I'd like to know what the 'final' cut sounds like though, and if it's drastically different or not.

I love the use of the dulcimer and the build of the drums is fantastic. Will really pusehd himself in this album, I can tell. I can't wait to have a full quality file though. It'd sound fantastic.

An absolutely amazing, awesome, astounding song! (How's that for alliteration?) ;) I love the build-up towards the guitar/drum jammin'. The intro made me think it was a Sigur Ros song for a moment but then the banjo-like sound kicked in and I grinned like an idiot - definitely Coldplay. It's such a positive, uplifting, upbeat song. I can't help head-bangin' and jumping around like a lunatic. It's just such a happy tune with such happy unity of instruments that it gives you hope of things really turning out all right in the end.

Makes me think of the sun rising in a clear azure sky over an endless stretch of deep blue ocean ... and the Coldplay boys rockin' out while speeding towards the tangerine horizon on a pirate ship à la Pirates of the Caribbean ...

LOL. I am so weird.

It's a 'rough cut' so I assume it's going to be different to the final album version so it's not technically listening to a song off the new LP...that's what I told myself anyway.

Coldplay should work more on instrumental songs as pink floyd did in the 70s. LIT proves that CP are great musicians.

Also the technique of fading one song to the next one makes the album great. It is almost a concept album.

Life in Technicolor = L O V E

It's simply beautiful.. I love this song. It's so sad because I think The Escapist destroyed LiT e bit... I'm still very glad they decided to make LiT instrumental, it's so much better than TE.

lau

I kinda like how the end of The Escapist is the begining of Life In Technicolor, it's almost as if they were expecting us to play the album on repeat and there not be a definite end to the album at all.

Saying this neither are my favourite from the album, LIT being much better than TE though

For those of you who don't know, the TRUE quality version has finally leaked, and can be found in the scene advance torrent.

After hearing the real thing, I think the track itself is a bit disappointing. To me, the crescendo just doesn't seem... large enough. That's not quite the word I'm looking for, but it's just a bit dissatisfying.

Anyone else heard the real thing?

I fiiiinally heard it, and definitely like it! It kinda reminds me of that Stars song that's all instrumental and they just play it to get warmed up. Would be neat for a show opener, but then again the fact that there aren't any vocals might not give it the oomph that Square One and Politik have.

I can only hope they fit it into the live show. And who knows maybe Chris will throw in some random lyrics!

completely agree.

i bought the album the day it was released here in australia and after i'd done my exam for the day, got home, put it into my computer, in went the earphones, then pressed play. this song is absolutely amazing. i cannot imagine it being anywhere else but the beginning of the album. it's melody is captivating and the vocals at the end is subtle and just right.

a perfect start to the album :)

Beautiful in its simplicity.

Would've loved it if they'd developed it into a fully-fledged track with lyrics, but at least we get a return of the theme in "The Escapist". The perfect bookends.

LiT starts off slowly, but then simmers and boils into something so melodic and uplifting, climaxing with Chris' tribal call to arms. It feels like there is a song missing though... I don't think the introduction to CoL follows on very well.
