This is the perfect combination of Coldplay's phenomenal songwriting and Brian Eno's amazing production skills. Jo Whiley mentioned Viva la Vida only in passing on her radio show and seemed to emphasize how beautiful Reign of Love, Yes & 42 are. So we've got a few doozies to hear yet. :D

haha I completely agree with you! Chris and the gang keep saying, 'You have to listen to it all the way through!!' and I respect that completely. With most bands, I've found that you have to listen to their albums as opposed to just their greatest hits in order to fully appreciate them (for instance, I didn't become a fan of the Beatles until I heard Rubber Soul all the way through....I was in love after that).

As much as I'd hate to say it...I hope Viva la Vida is the new single that is being released as opposed to '42' or whatever else people were speculating might be the new release.

I don't want to hear most of the album before it has been released as it should be heard!!

I think you're right! This version of Viva la Vida is a single edit...I think the end is intended to go on longer and flow into Violet Hill. After all, Violet Hill has that amazing 30 seconds of ambience before the song actually begins!

I don't know if the UK iTunes is different from the US one, but you can download JUST the song without pre-ordering. I pre-ordered it anyway, AFTER I downloaded the song! So I esentially bought the song twice! Oh well, it's just THAT good anyway! :D Also, I got it on iTunes plus which I think is 256kbps and is DRM free, so I was rocking it out on CD this morning on the way to work!

I think this shows the versatility of the new sound. Some will like the harder darker Coldplay, some will like the lighter more uplifting Coldplay, while the majority of us are just gonna love it from one end to the other and everywhere in between. I must say I said prior to this that VLV would be a great album but it probably wouldn't be better than Rush of Blood to the Head but I now seriously have my doubts....

Viva La Vida is amazing the sound is definately influenced by Arcade Fire on this one....
I'm not all for claiming every song is their best song but ....this one is for sure close to the top on my list after only 3 listens.

And I am sure you will get it....there will be a range of styles on this album I think but you will get your darker Coldplay just be patient....as I said early most of us are gonna love it from one end of the spectrum to the other, some may just prefer the darker and more jagged style...

wow this song is amazing. violet hill was great but not as much as a punch in the gut as i wanted the first single to be --- a rebel yell sounded like sloppy 80s to me, even though i liked the fact it was so experimental -- this song is just amazing. the first two songs made me a tiny bit wary but i knew from all of prospekt's blog entries that this was in fact going to be the "album that they'll be remembered by"...

the production is awesome -- i love the orchestral electronica into it with the four on the floor beat ... such lovely lovely strings.... it almost reminds me of an imogen heap influence. and thse interlude/outro reverby vocal thing is sooo u2 ... :)

this is my summer song too. i'm already imagining tooling around amsterdam and rotterdam on my bike with this song, being the happiest i've ever been. and this is the song that i'll listen to at the top of the london eye, looking out over my favorite city. i'm just so in love with this song...when i was trying so hard to imagine what i wished for coldplay to come up with, if i had succeeded, this is the song my brain would have come up with. it's so...cinematic, so beautiful.

i think i love this more than i loved "speed of sound" when it came out. and i didn't think that was possible for me. it's evolved AROBTTH, i think, and that's exactly what i dreamed for. my only hope is that the rest of the album is this mind-blowingly incredible in my book. because if it is...then it might bump out AROBTTH as my favorite thing on this planet. and i never dreamed that anyone would ever do that, not even coldplay themselves. i never asked for it, beacuse i knew that was impossible. but i might be wrong...who knows.

I'm absolutely in love with this song. And I agree, at first it sounds too much like "Oh, what a typical pop song", but the strings are GORGEOUS and it's all in all wonderful.

I'm one of the few here who's not impressed with "A Spell A Rebel Yell", but "Violet Hill" grows more and more on me, while I'm loving "Viva la vida" more and more each time I listen to it. I bought it on iTunes and don't regret it at all.

Not a complaint AT ALL, but I would have mixed the choral part at the end differently. Maybe double it up and add a bit more reverb and delay. But Eno's a LOT smarter than me, so it really doesn't matter.:D

This to me is the direction X&Y should have gone after AROBTTH. It's just so heart felt yet upbeat. I get the impression that after AROBTTH, they had little fuel left to create the emotionally sad songs coldplay expertise in (possibly due to Chris finding love, having children etc.) and X&Y tried to fake it a bit, you could hear in Chris' voice that the pain and emotion in previous albums wasn't there. I'm not saying that's bad! I hope very much that the band are happy! But with X&Y they didn't really write for their new emotions whereas the two new album songs strike me as very emotionally driven but in a different way which is brilliant, a perfect evolution and it's no surprise so many of us have reacted emotionally to this song because the old Coldplay are back it would seem with songs where we can feel and relate to the emotions the band is feeling and it completely absorbs us.

I've got to admit I missed the feeling more than I realised.

Wow that's a great song. Its reminiscent of older Coldplay material, but with a new fresh feeling and sound. I still like Violet Hill a little more though, I dont know why but I really love that song.
And BTW: This song is no doubt Famous Old Painters but renamed. It had the band instruments (Strings, some background horns maybe) and I dont know about a Spanish theme, but there was maybe a little Spanish influence. It is almost exactly how Prospekt described Famous Old Painters, but with a different name. So now Im happy because the song I was most looking forward to got released after all.

After my last post, I went back and listened to it again since I though it sounded more like 'won't' and I think you're right. THat's how I took it this morning, but I'd only had a couple of hours sleep, so I looked again. (Of course, I REALLY didn't want to hear the song again...but for the good of Coldplaying, I made the sacrifice,lolol:lol::lol::lol:.)

I am not sure i know which one of VLV and VH i like best. While i am listening to VH i like VH better, but when i listen to VLV i like it better. this is confusing.
BTW, does anyone else get an Amsterdam/AROBTTH feel at 1:38 - 1:50 on VLV?

I like it. But I do have a complaint:

It's not a very organic song. IE, instead of guitar, bass, and actual drums you get synths, strings, drum machines. I prefer to hear the band play, not some electronic doo dads.

The melody and lyrics are fantastic, but I wish the actual music was different. Violet Hill is still the best song that we've heard.

I've agreed with people in the past who've said some of his lyrics were weak, and I was delighted to hear we was really working on crafting them for this album. He's really come through on this song. Even more than VH or ASARY.

I'm so glad though, that coldplay decided to use violin! That's my favourite instrument. :D


I'd like to add: Viva la vida makes me appreciate Violet Hill a little more because it has made me realize that VH has its' own charm! It's unique.

im not xenophobe at all just i dont like the alizee thing sorry. and i was reading in a web page that coldplay was boo in their last concert in barcelona when they change to acoustic that is a fact. and yep maybe vlv have similarities with that song but the alizee song is more pop its not the same and one other think the fact is that alizee its crap as an artist. but i dont saying anything about the music who is produced by talented musicians who dont recieve the credit. VH AND VLV ARE AWESOME.
