IS anyone else needing multiple reloads of pages to get on here and post? This place has truly gone mad!! I LOVE IT!!!!

Now, to the question: I'm not ready to say it's their best song, but I absolutely love it!!

If this is any indication of the album, it has all the depth of some of the greatest albums ever recorded. Records like Supertramp's Crime Of The Century and The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead are coming to mind.

And clearly, Chris has been putting more thought into his lyrics.

And the piano breakdown at the end makes the whole song for me. It's the perfect contrast for their heavier sound.

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE ALBUM!!

This is their best song since Amsterdam...
I love the piano bit at the end, Chris' voice has this really softly emotive voice there, I think...
I can't wait for Viva La Vida, but I wish they'd given out A Spell A Rebel Yell with this, coz I want more of this fantastic stuff...

And cavenow, I had that problem too...
Look at your email link, there might be numbers or parts of the code that didn't get included in the hyperlink, then just add them to the end of your link...
Hope that helps!

Its not the best Coldplay song ever, but... wait... I dont know. All I know is that its pretty damn good. It COULD be one of their best songs. I have to listen to it some more and judge when i've got my head properly on my shoulders... cuz right now i'm still reeling with excitement. :)

beautiful love song ever!
full of romance,as much i am in the mood now!

if chris was there any where near to me i'ld have gone to him and might have kissed him a n number of times!:kiss:without breaks in between!
and would have sat with him in snow that's what the song is for me!

29-04-2008, 01:50 PM
Fuck.... I love it. I want the entire album, NOW.

And all I'm thinking of is the depth of sound, but the uncrowded feel of it. AND CHRIS' SONGWRITING IS FUCKING BACK.

I'm also thinking about how explosive of a song this'll be live. DAMN.

I really like the dark sound...I feel like listening to band who was 16 year old for 5 years and suddenly is 30 and grown up. Specially lyric-wise...I must admit, I really like it. Brings up a lot of interest for the new album to hear what it's all about....
PS! When I first heard falsetto I thought "hell no", but actually it fits fine:)

Nice work:)

I don't recommend analyzing the song after the very first time you hear it, because you're in such a state of wonder and excitement that you really cant appreciate the elements.

I'm in love with this song, especially with how different it is from previous Coldplay tracks. Johnny is amazing on the guitar, as well as Will on the drums. Chris's melody is pure genius...can't wait to buy the album.

This song is just great, I think it's refreshing to hear something new anyway, but if it had been a bad song we would have noticed. If Viva La Vida... is going to sound anything like this, it's going to be such a classic, surpassing AROBTTH almost defintiely. But hey, just IMO:D

Silverspira
29-04-2008, 02:20 PM
I like the song a lot. :)
It doesn't sound to much like old Coldplay, which is positive, it sounds fresch, big at some parts and intimate at others, powerful and dark. The lyrics feels like an amazingly big step forward, love it! It's more political, it's deeper and it feels epic. Amazing. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!!!

aveDANKE
29-04-2008, 02:22 PM
I think it's brilliant.
I wouldn't say it's their best (I'd say Politik or A Rush Of Blood To The Head are) but I think it's awesome.
Lot's of new things and layers to discover after multiple listens.

Love it! Think it is a good sign of what is to come! :D Jo whiley on Radio 1 kept saying how much she loved 'Yes!' so I'm really looking forward to that one now!

Great guitar's from Jonny - I think this album is really going to show how good he is. Chris said that we'll hear a lot more of the others (& Brian Eno!?!) which I think is a really great.

Have signed up for my download but haven't got it yet. I sense it might take a while! Not fair as I wanna listen again! :laugh3:

AROBTTH - Great
X&Y - Amazing!

i actually didn't think much of it at first listen. only because it wasn't exactly the sound i expected to hear.
on the 2nd and 3rd listen, knowing then what it sounded like, the greatness sunk in.
and reading along with the lyrics makes it sink even deeper.
great song. can't wait to hear the rest.

Judging by Violet Hill ...Viva La Vida will be a close 2nd to AROBTTH, which was by far the best out of the first 3. This album is going to be interesting. I'm typically not a huge fan of major distortion as it doesn't take a whole lot of talent to play this way, but Johnny has proven himself as a guitarist a long time ago, and the meaty distortion actually fits well....I think we will be hearing alot of it in this album....

The solo is actually pretty simplistic but very catchy, I picked up my guitar and plucked out the notes within a matter of 5 minutes....

I'll give 8/10

I love it...the only negative thing I'd say is the 'If you love me/won't you let me know" is too high.

I love the rest of it though, I love the verses and Will's amazing drum beat, Jonny's guitar is fantastic. All in all a fabulous progression for them and a good indication of the album.

Love it.

I like it. So, is it a good or bad thing if it takes a few listens for a song to grow on me? I wasn't crazy about X&Y at first, but it grew on me.

However, after hearing X&Y several times over the past (almost) three years against my own will, I've grown a bit tired of it.

I must say, after the second listen, I'm already liking it, but I'm not crazy about it.

Alright. So we've got quite good beat, nice drums, excellent lyric... And? I'm not delighted. I'm not in love with it. I think (GOD I hope!) that Coldplay CAN do something better than Violet Hill. If VLVODAAHF is going to sound like this, I'm not sure it will be the best album ever made.

Eno's production is so good.
What strikes me is the power with which Chris's first line breaks open the song.
It sounds extremely clear and loud. Great stuff.

I don't usually get excited about music or put songs on repeat, but last night I was jumping up and down with excitement and I've finally got the song now - I think it's AMAZING. Love love love the lyrics, Jonny's guitar solo, the great beat, just the whole sound of it.

Did anyone else get the Spanish-y feel from it like they were talking about for the album? I thought it was most noticable in the guitar solo and there was something of it in the drum beats, too.

On 5th play right now. I think people around me may start to get annoyed soon.

I didn't think it was a grower. I was in love the first time.

It sort of reminded me of the first time I heard AROBTTH when I instantly fell in love with most tracks, not X&Y, which took some getting used to. I think that if this is the direction that VLVODAAHF is going to go it'll be a really interesting listen. Either way, the song is going to be amazing live.

and those two notes (C# to B to C# again), driving that C sharp home..
a simple yet brilliant hook.

Just from the sound of VH, I think Johny was given the go ahead to do his own thing on some of the new stuff, bringing him back to the roots of when he was into My Bloody Valentine and stuff like that.....

The sound as a whole is different but the guitar parts are the most changed....which I like

It makes a change for Chris to be singing about something other than space, pieces of puzzles or death... haha...

It's definitely not what I was expecting. After the first listen I was a little disappointed. I've listened to it a couple more times and I really really like it. I love the ending with chris and the piano. I was looking at the album cover and listening to the song and they do seem to fit.

It does kinda sound U2-ish, and it's definitely one of their....roughest? I was surprised. I wish it was a little longer though. Without the intro it's almost 3 minutes. Good song though.

It's taking me a bit to get my head around it it's so different, but it's good different.

I love how it sort of sounds like it came out of a different time and world, like they wrote it about some soldier long ago. Reminds me of some of the old war torn folk songs that are still floating around here if you know where to look.

ok, when i was trying to post here in the "great violet hill explosion of 4/29/08," there was so much webtraffic that i don't think it went through. so here i go.

when i first listened to it on radio 1, i was a bit surprised. i was expecting something different, something less X&Y-ish. that's not to say that i didn't like it or anything...it just threw me off a bit. so i waited until jo whiley played it again, and then i listened to the recording of the radio show (i only JUST managed to get it from the site after classes!) and popped it on my ipod before breakfast.

but while i was walking to class etc, i fell way more in love with it. i probably looked like an idiot, walking around campus with such a huge grin on my face, but i couldn't help but think "I'M LISTENING TO THE NEW COLDPLAY SINGLE, AND NO ONE ELSE ON CAMPUS IS!!" but i think its an absolutely brilliant song, a really great effort. i was just hoping for more of an AROBTTH or parachutes sound than X&Y, but i can't make judgement on that until i hear the entire album, can i?

so besides the fact that i was hoping for more simple, back-to-basics, paired-down music...i think violet hill is a great piece of work. i've already racked up 10 listens in 5 hours. that's damn good for spending most of that time in class! :D

i haven't read through all the posts yet, but anyone else think the lyrics are REALLY political?!

Hi amigos, I adoooooooore the title of the album . Very poetic and optimistic, just what the world needs right now
I think Violet hill is the best song of coldplay. At least their best single. I mean "don't panic", "trouble", "in my place", "the scientist" are decent but none of these songs compares to Violet hill. The moment i listened to violet hill, i forgot everything about their previous songs. Its a new start, a new light, a new era. Chris has never sung better and the lyrics are so deep, they make Goethe look like Enrique Iglesias. The melody is so melancholic, i felt like crying :( The last time i felt like that was probably listening to Mozart. The guitar solo is also fantastic, que emocion... If the entire album is as good as this single, it will definitely be one of the best pieces of art ever, I simply can't wait to listen to viva la vida (loca :P). Forget Parachutes and AROBTTH, they were just minor works. Violet hill is history.

its the most self held, compact song i think the band have ever done... hard to say whether its better than others they've done because its so different, still has a classic johnnny solo in there but i think its a direction that coldplay are smart to go, as i think if they continue to write like this, we'll get the best material out of them. to date anyway.

Hey Folks:

I think Violet Hill is just the kickoff we all need for a great summer. Having now listened to it five times through without interruption, I believe our collective socks are about to be blown off when the cd is released. Violet Hill has an eerie structure that rolls through a lot of music clutter that is currently on the radio. I like the unique hooks, jarring guitar, striking keyboards, thunderous bass and saving the best for last ... the smashing drums/cymbals.

Since April 29th is now the official kick-off for summer 2008, I think we are in for a great summer ... of Coldplay at least. If the fellas are bringing this much heat in their first release, global warming could be turned up a couple of degrees on the celsius scale alone. I don't know about you all, but I fear for the state of the world's glaciers after feeling and hearing the heat in this song alone.

The boys are back,

TB

Yeah, I think it's pretty good, definitely different than any other coldplay song and definitely darker like they said. But I like how its more guitar driven, very bluesy and heartfelt without Chris even belting out any screams or falsettos. Overall good song but I feel this won't be the best song on the album. At least I'm hoping that's the case.

thats what is prob the hardest thing to get used to, the new guitar sound.. I really like it in the part before the chorus, and the "solo" riff part. But I wish the song had more guitar on it. it is very bassy, which i think is another thing that makes it so different.
Overall I do like the song, I just wasn't expecting the change like this, reading all the reviews and stuff i really thought they had gone more radioheadish with the songs. I dont hear much experimentalism in the song, its just different.

I like it but i don't love it yet....i'm have already worked out the chords and guitar riffs (as you can see i'm very obsessed with their music) the thing that sticks out to me is that it reminds me of hip hop. the way the guys do the 8 count on the breaks it reminds me of a hip hop beat beginning.....i absolutely love the ending piano part.....and also to add the guy who posted that he heard it before all of us, we now know he lied....lol there is indeed false settle and it doesnt start with a jagged guitar distortion....it starts with martins martin's strong vocals barreling over the music.....i just wanted to say that so we know his amount of credibility...lol

It sounds very Coldplay to me. Not their best song, imo, but it's good. The guitar, omg. I'm not disappointed, yayz.

If this song is indicative of the direction of the whole album, I'm ok with that.

I'm VERY ok with that! :D

I really like 'Violet Hill'. I have only heard it once so far and can't wait to hear it again. I got up early (EST) to download but the site crashed. But on the way to bringing my son to school, the DJ announced a brand new song from Coldplay, "Violet Hill". It was 104.5 in Philadelphia. I was so glad I was able to hear it and didn't have to wait until this evening when I got home from work.

Thanks, Coldplay, for the freebie.

I got up at 7:20 this morning and tried desperately to log into this stupid network that governs this campus. after 8 tries I got in, and while I didn't have time to join the insanity, that had already begun, in listening for the single on BBC. Instead I headed off for breakfast and then two my two-hour spanish exam. Afterwards I came straight back, logged on to coldplay.com (network let me in on the first try) the insanity had escalated. As I expected a million new posts and posts inquiring about lyrics, chords etc. then I sprinted over to you-tube and grinned widely as the synthy, white-noise guitar intro MTV had forecasted invaded my ears.

My first reaction to the intro was that Jonny had finally found a song where he could use his effect-heavy, distorted slide intro that we coldplayers had all come to know from the live intros to what if and X&Y on the twisted logic tour.
After the pounding rythmic piano intro was mowed over by a sweep of jonny's slide I found it very interesting how much Chris's vocals had to fight the music, this obviously is intended to resemble the cry's of a soldier(Chris) emerging from a chaotic, roaring warzone. Jonny did not dissapoint in this song, unlike other guitarists, buckland gave power chords the middle finger and produces refreshing new sensations in his roaring distorted effects that scream and moan through the whole song. The solo was highly anticipated simply because, well...it's a solo. and jonny doesn't use them a lot. the curling description mtv gave remin ds me of the bridge of X&Y and I wasn't far off, in the style of the solos to X&Y and talk, he keeps it simple yet effective, milking his newly found tones, but refusing to interrupt the song for his own merit. The solo was just a piece in a puzzle, but somehow it's already lodged itself in my head.
Chris's vocals remind my bro of phil collins, and he's somewhat right. It's a good vocal and Chris, like jonny, jonny hits strides by going out of his comfort zone to create somewhat agitated vocal melody's. I found the maroon 5 comparisons were a tad inaccurate, Chris's voice is a little more sincere and not so tacky and cliche. I think this might be a theme throughout the album, where the music and vocals are less clean, more unbridled and outloud, like splattered paint.
Also, the return to the piano at the end reminded me a little bit of harmless, with the solo piano chords and the sound of Chris's voice.

I'm quoting this to take up less space. I totally agree with what you said, very insightful comments. Here are my thoughts (as posted on another thread that's getting less attention):

I have to say this song confirmed one thing for me:

Brian Eno is a genius producer. Chris's voice, the instruments, the transitions, etc were all perfect for the band's sound. It was just as raw as what we heard on Parachutes.

As for the song itself, I have to say I'm a tad underwhelmed. But it doesn't worry me at all, because I'm fully aware the other songs on the album will be totally different from each other in many ways. I think the tune is bordering on TOO simple - there isn't a hook that keeps you coming back for more, like with most Coldplay songs. It's almost like Politik minus the awesome break toward the end with the heartfelt high piano and wailing guitar. The lyrics are interesting but I'm not quite sure what they mean... personally I'm a fan of the more abstract Coldplay lyrics (which I know a lot of people hate) but whatever.

Again, I hope everyone who reads this and hears the song doesn't think I'm distressed or anything. It's a good song, one that I won't skip over when listening to the final CD (unlike a few songs on X&Y, which I never listen to anymore). Just not great. And I fully expect there to be 4 or 5 classic kickass Coldplay songs to be on Viva, ones that will practically define my summer and this stage in my life!

omfg this isn't really what i expected. When i first heard the song which was about 20 minutes ago, i was very curious but when chris started to sing, my curiosity dissapeared. I don't know if you agree with me, but i don't really think its a good song.. i maybe have to listen to it a couple of times more, but i think is for sure that VH won't fare better in the us than speed of sound. remember me.

They would not give their best shot at once...maybe they're saving it for second or third single?
Speed of sound was good but the rest singles, while beeing ok, could not overshadow their first single (at least for me)...
On the other hand in 2002 In my Place was nice, then sweet Scientist, brilliant Clocks and even better GPASUYF.
I hope same goes with Viva la Vida :)

I'm not a huge fan of the power-quarter note and heavy guitar riffs. I know I'll probably take heat for the fact that I don't jump on Coldplay's nuts every time they do something, but I'm just not a fan. It's a little too country for me. I do, however, like the last... 30 seconds or so. Quieter, more ballad-like music suits Coldplay far more.

its not a regular pop song for the charts its the kind of song that grows when you heard it. speed of sound was a good song but for 10 plays then i forget about it. this song is definitly a way better than speed of sound. and dont forget this is coldplay 2.0 and i think i like it more than the other version. :smug:

OMG, I just listened to it. Amazing, theyve done it again. Its like a cross between recent Radiohead (Bodysnatchers, maybe), the Beatles, and something weve never heard before. That guitar solo was BRILLIANT no matter how simple. If the rest of the album is even close to this good, it will make all the previous three seem like they werent even trying. I love the sound and Chris Martins voice was awesome. I also love the little repetition of "If you love me, won't you let me know" instead of just a standard 4 line chorus. Great work. It also at the end reminded me of Square One (one quiet instrument, chris singing softly, and the first mention of the song title).

Way to go guys!!:):rolleyes::cool::smug::laugh3::lol::D

I wasnt overly impressed its a ok song but not one that makes me go wow. Personally I think its lacking melody which is the reason I love Coldplay, it sounds to simple to me I know Coldplay have always gone with simple stuff but to me this a bit to simple and a bit all over the place. The drum beat isnt anything special at all compared to X&Y some of the drums in that were shit hot. Ive listened to it almost 10 times and still hasnt grown on me yet, all there singles they have realeased before ive loved from the very start even the hardest part but this for some reason hasnt dont know why. I did have my reserves about this new album. It isnt a bad song at all just hasnt clicked with me. Who knows maybe it will, I for one hope it does and I do hope the rest of the songs do to.

Sort of an inadequate set of poll options there. :P

It's far from their best song ever, and unusually dark for a Coldplay song, but very good. And since they don't often pick their best songs for singles (why on earth is White Shadows not a single?!), this should be a great album. :D

...And I guess they really have decided to go with a title even longer and more awkward than "A Rush Of Blood To The Head." It's gonna be hard to advertise it with such a long name!

I think the reason people are disappointed is because it's been built up so much.

It's not terrible, it's different and they've tried to give us something new. And they've succeeded.

Speed of Sound was so formulaic, this is nothing like that. I love it and I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I'm liking it :)
great beginm chris voice is good, and great jonny solo yeah i love it.

Yeah it's like their best song
^but properly i can't choose this option, and still i haven't listened the album :\...

may be it don't goes with the expetatives that some people had about their new work, but i had liked it anyways... although right now i'm thinking and trying to find on it the 'colourful' thing that the 'spanish influence' had brought to their LP4...

btw the begining reminds me to 3 other bands/musicians: Pink Floyd (it was already said), The Police (their theme Zenyatta Monyatta (it beging a bit similar) and Bob Marley (Natural Mystic) or may be even a bit similar to Mike Oldfield :idea2:, i love them and so i have to like Violet Hill too :D

(must pay attenting to the lyrics on the next listenings. :) but them will be great as always.

my fave parts are:

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low
.....
I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

great work

I know I might have already posted my opinion on this song, but I was wondering... does anyone think it would stand much better when listened to in the context of the album? Don't get me wrong, I really like it, but it feels like we've been thrown in the deep end a little bit. Its almost like releasing Twisted Logic as a single for me - its dark and quite heavy, and it has a similar kind of grittiness to VH. But it doesn't seem like single material. I don't know, what do you guys think? Its kinda hard for me to explain.

I still love it though :D I think I would currently give it 8/10.

I personally think it's great. And if this is what the whole album's going to be like, than it might be my favorite of the 4. I love the raw edginess.
And it's seems like Chris' lyrics have matured and...i can't explain it....just know that I think the lyrics are great. :D

29-04-2008, 09:38 PM
Oh, i can explain it now. Most of their lyrics are like sad and have a hurt feeling, like someone wounded him. But these are a lot edgier; it's like he's still hurting but it turned into resentment.
I don't want to psychoanalyze this song right now. I'll shut up.

oooh, that's a good point. for some reason i hadn't said it in so many words in my head, and that makes a lot of sense to me. with "speed of sound" as the first single off X&Y, i feel like they let us get into the change slowly, like they gave us the most AROBTTH song off the album for our first experience of it. not that they SHOULD have done that same thing for today, i'm just thinking that it very well could be a weird choice for a single. "thrown in the deep end" is a good way to think of it, i think :D

Even from Parachutes > AROBTTH, I think that In My Place was the most "Parachutes" like song on the album, and therefor a good choice as the first single. I mean, can you imagine if they released Politik as the first single? Exactly. But maybe VH is the most "commercial"/"mainstream" song on the album, and in that case, we haven't heard nothin yet.
I'm glad to see someone was thinking the same as me though

Violet Hill is an excellent, amazing, great song in my opinion. As soon as it started, I had a mad grin on my face. The lyrics are unlike anything I've heard from Chris before, where Will may once have gone for the regular 4/4 bass drum and snare pattern he didn't, Jonny's guitar was just incredible. Can't wait to hear thr rest of the album. I am very happy!
