Hey coldplayers...I am very interested in hearing your thoughts on the White Stripes. I'm writing a report on them and i need some insight from anyone who knows them well enough to make an informed opinion. I would go to my friends, but they don't know who they are. So, i figure you coldplayers may know enough about them. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!! :D :) :o  8)

( I got carried away with the smilies..they're just so damn cute!)

Hey, i'll try not to make my reply too long but i love the white stripes so much i'll probably natter on.

I think the white stripes r one of the most important bands out there at the minute, just because what they're doing is completely and utterly different to the "popular" music. I mean, what could be more unusual than 2 wierdly dressed (brother/sister/wife/people????) playing this mental, freakout blues and making it sound so damn good?

To recycle what's traditonally seen as an "old" form of music that grandads used to bop 2 and make it seem completely new, exciting and surprising is incredible and just blows away all the sub-standard crap that clogs up the radio.

Probably the best word to use to describe them is intense. The relationship between Jack and Meg is freakily intense, look how they seem to know what the other's thinking (wierd huh?) and the way jack screams like his life depends on it and jumps/climbs/falls all over the stage whilst still being cool.

They are essentially a phenomenam, i mean they turn up completely against the grain of nu-metal/garage rock bands which r the latest trend as if they come from another planet. They take what is probably one of the most basic forms of music - the blues - and morph it into something completely different. Take for instance "stop breaking down", just a normal 12 bar blues song, yet they strip it down 2 just raw guitar and drums and push it through a mangler, creating this messed up/intense/twisted sound which is unique and - more importantly - relevant.

If someone told me about april time last year that one of my favourite bands would consist of 2 people dressed in red and white, playing the blues on just drums and guitar i'd laugh at them. I didn't mind the blues before, but it was hardly cutting edge, new and exciting. The stripes basically recycled the blues, took it out of the dustbin, gave it a lick of paint and a kick up the arse and wahay! what do you have? This unique sounding/fantastic live/more intense than slipknot band which are absolutely nothing like anything else around at the moment.

1 last thing before i shut up. I was doin some schoolwork whilst listening to the radio, the normal sub-standard crap and i wasn't really listening. Then on comes "fell in love with a girl" and instantly it grabs you. The feedback and the pounding drums woah! and then this girly/screamy voice screaming at you about how he's "fell in love once and lost completely" i had 2 stop workin and just listen. i know i used this word about 6 times before but the intensity (lol) present in them grabs you and demands your undivided attention.

Thank lord for the White stripes :!:

anyways, my download's finished so i'm off and i've written far 2 much. I hope that helps you sweet one, if it doesn't...well then i'll cry :(

btw this is my first post and it's about a completely different band 2 the actual one the site is for, how ironic!

at the beginning of this month i got the new spin magazine.
it featured coldplay
anyways what i wanted to say was on the cover of spin was the white stripes. welll of course i read the coldplay article first but after that i read that article of the white stripes front to back. i kind of knew most of the stuff it mentioned but i thought it was pretty weird what those two people in the band have been telling others. i read that they said they where brother and sister, then i read somewhere's else that they were married. what to believe? well when i read the article to see if this was true they didnt deny any of it, but they never even admitted to it either. so anyways i still like their music. By the way, did anybody see them perform on the mtv movie awards?

Invisible and Proud
26-09-2002, 09:53 PM
i missed the MTV music awards, but the top of the pops 2000th edition would have flopped like a big floppy thing if the white stripes didn't come on and squash everything else, woo hoo

:sniper: death to all sub-standard pop acts

Oh, by the way, sweet one (or anyone else for that matter) if u like the white stripes, you should check out "The Yeah Yeah Yeah's" they have a kinda bluesy yet rocky sound which is incredibly cool and they're different enough from the white stripes to make them worth checking out. Plus the singer has a COOL voice

The Bellrays are also another cool band, they're like a rock band fronted by Aretha Franklin (boy can she sing!)

Last night I had the privilage of seeing The White Stripes perform at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. I wanted to share my concert experience with you.

First of all, Soledad Bros. and Hot Hot Heat opened for them. The Soledad Bros. were incredible. I liked Hot Hot Heat, but I felt that they still need to develop more as a band. There was just something about them that I didn't like.

We were expecting The White Stripes to go on at 9pm, but they walked on stage at 9:35pm. No problem... but you could feel in the crowd the anticipation. They casually walk on stage, Jack picks up his guitar, Meg sits at her drums and it's on! Right from the beginning they had me in awe. Seriously! I was sitting in Row A in the center (I have a friend that scored me those seats). Jack White had his hair in his face the majority of the time and I was just aching to see his face. Every now and then he would flip it back and I would get a partial look. I mean come on... I am sitting that close... I want to see him close up. They sounded amazing and I must say... give it up for Meg White! She is incredible too! I like her style. :)

They sang around 27 songs before walking off stage and then they came back on and did 3 more. During the last two songs Jack moved that hair out of his eyes and ladies... I have to say... he is pretty spectacular. ;) It's a shame he hids behind his hair most of the time.

For those of you who have seen them live, you know what I am talking about when I say... "WOW!" Jack White is extremely talented. When he was talking to the audience he was talking in this funny voice... but you can't help but love the guy.

At the vey end he flicked his guitar pic into the audience and it feel next to us. My husband dove for it and was in a wrestling match for it. I thought there was no way he would get it, but he did!!!! So we have Jack White's guitar pick!

I just wanted to share my experience with all of you. It was an incredible show! It's amazing that it's just he and Meg up there.

I went to see them in San Diego at the RIMAC Arena. Unfortunately, I didn't make it in time to catch the Soledad Brothers play. I made it just in time to see the YYY's play their last two songs but it's cool. I had already seen them two times prior. While The White Stripes' crew was setting up their gear, they played lots of old cartoons like Betty Boop and what not which really got the crowd annoyed after the fourth or fifth cartoon. Finally the White Stripes came on and played a magneficient show. It was fantastic and was about an hour and thirty mintues long. I'm glad I caught them play.

I saw the White Stripes when they were down here in San Diego. Soledad Brothers opened for them along with the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. I don't shar eyour opinion of the Soledad Brothers. Though I liked them, they seemed to had a very "pull over at a bar in the middle of Texas and get into a fight" kind of sound to them. Don't know if that makes sense.

The YYYs were spectacular. Karin O. lived up to her reputation. "Black Tongue," "Wait," and "Rich" were highlights for me, though I was disappointed they didn't perform "Y-Control."

Oh ... WSs ...

Jack White was incredibly impressive. I mentioned this in the Jack black vs. Jack White thread, but you don't really realize how talented he is until you see them live. Their CDs are great, but part of the greatness is in the simplicity. On stage, seeing them perform song ater song after song, each seemingly demanding a different skill from him as Meg bangs her quarter notes ... it was dang impressive.

Are the White Stripes brother and sister or husband and wife?

See hon? I told ya nobody knows for sure  :D

I've actually heard Jack refer to it both ways, BUT ...

VH-1 did report in some fluffy-special they did that Jack and Meg had been married. They quoted a time frame.

It's all very nauseating and I'm sure at some point I'll find a reason to use it against their music. Right now, they're rock gawds, in the pantheon of current greatness:

Coldplay
Radiohead
and The White Stripes.

Of course, that's my personal pantheon.

Maybe some of you check out The White Stripes website. If you do, then you are familiar with how Jack White periodically writes a message to his fans. I loved this particular message and so I have copied it here for you alll to read. I love this man! :D
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello candy caners with beautiful brainers,
Well the days are just spin, spin, spinnin’
Meg was in the hotel lobby today waitin’ on a friend
I was on a cement stoop wishing I had my banjo.
We played in new zealand, beautiful towns and country
Now we are in australia and blowin through the dessert
With a fist full of whistles and beats
Meg white wakes up in the morning and composes beats.
Pretty soon it’ll be june and I’ll be chewing on plankton and dreaming up a new
Threat to the neighbors.
The press keep telling me what it is that “I’m doing”
I’m so thankful, without them I wouldn’t know
What I was up to.
Had a cracker today too,
Boy oh boy,
St. gregory and st. cecilia
Are looming large at the present
Hung out with heddy lamar
And joe meek today.
Passed on a chance to save the world,
But took these people up on a cup of coffee
And a toast to the children.
The future seems to be paved with video games,
The gone fishin’ sign has been replaced with “keep out”
Things are lookin up though,
California’s got a new governor,
And the rest of us are on a road to
Restfull retirements in winnebago’s
Traveling the countryside
Looking for nothing in particular.
That’s a beautiful thought.
Jack white

ha-ha---I LOVE THEM
it was funny
on a concert here in Los Angeles, i think, there was this drunk guy who jumped up on stage and started screaming and calling the attention----then he jumped to the crowd and they passed him down

then jack---stopped singing---ordered to stop the music and said
" look at that loser.........." i cant remember what else---but he started making fun of him and telling him if he was at the wrong concert---if mommy had confused the tickets

it was hilarious----did i mention he literally stopped the concert to make a fool out of this drunk

I am definatly going, as long as I don't have to go alone... responses from friends have been less than stellar so far, though. It's at that new Cunard Centre, so really nice venue but it helps if you go with a group of people so the crowd can't push you around as much- one thing I learned from the Sam Roberts concert there- lots of excited kids who have never been to a real concert before :dizzy:

Do you mean the Canada Day concert? :sick2: yeah, you couldn't pay me to go to that one. I don't like to diss other people's music but man, it's like everything thats wrong with mainstream music wrapped up in a tight little craptastic bubble. And of course it's going to get in the way of people who just want to see the fireworks from the hill. grr.

The White Stripes are now touring in the US after European shows

Rock duo The White Stripes have entered the UK album chart at number one with their latest release, Icky Thump.

Meg and Jack White's new album replaced the Traveling Wilburys' Collection at the top of the sales chart.

In the singles chart, Rihanna stays at number one for a sixth week with Umbrella, featuring Jay-Z.

She fought off competition from Any Dream Will Do winner Lee Mead, whose version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber song rose to number two.

Mead, 25, is preparing to star in a West End production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as a result of winning the BBC One talent show earlier this month.

Festival acts

The White Stripes are currently on tour in the US and Canada after promoting Icky Thump, their sixth album, at gigs across Europe, including the recent Wireless festivals in London and Leeds.

Earlier this month they played an acoustic set for war veterans at the Royal Chelsea Hospital, London, before playing a benefit show for them.

Editors, who played at Glastonbury this week, saw their single Smokers Outside The Hospital rise from number 30 to number eight.

Another Glastonbury act, Scottish DJ and singer Calvin Harris, saw his debut album I Created Disco enter the chart at number eight.

Heart-throb Enrique Iglesias saw his album Insomniac make its debut at number three.

Wow!!! Just got back from a White Stripes- induced mob here in Halifax. They were playing another secret show, this time at a pool place, but they only let a few people in. The other couple of hundred just stood there clogging up the sidewalk. Fun time, anyway. Don't think the city has ever seen anything quite like it.

Now off to the concert

And I can't be part of all the fun in my city as I'm away. :(

^Well, I got a lot of exercise out of it, but not much else in the end... *shrug*

Back from the concert. Really wising I had remembered a camera right now. *grr*

Maybe not *THE* most amazing show I've ever seen, but it was up there as one of the best. Jack is without a doubt the most amazing mesmerising guitarist I've ever seen, though. Wow.

Oh yeah, and he wore a kilt again. Not to mention it almost seemed like he had a tan- he wasn't anywhere near as pale as his pictures. And he brought a bagpiper and a giant Nova Scotia flag with him. He definitely seems to be embracing his Nova Scotian roots. (He's second and third cousins with an amazing number of Nova Scotia's most famous musicians, mostly fiddlers.) And just when you thought it couldn't get more weirdly iconic, a couple of the old sailing ships that are here for the tall ships festival were moored right outside the windows. (The concert was at pier 23 on the waterfront)

I freaked out when they went off stage before the encore- they had played for a long time, but had only played about 3 or 4 of their top 15 or 20 songs. But then everyone got so worked up that the encore must have lasted for another 10(!) songs or so. They played for about 2 hours altogether.

Let's hope Halifax lived up to it's reputation as one of the loudest cities enough to bring them back. I think we did.

Here is some youtube footage from an intimate show for french television. performed at the famous studios canal. this gig shows off both the hard rock side of white stripes as well as their more mellow side.

I hate that too. It sucks. It's one of the reaons why I left the NIN forum and joined a White Stripes message board. I hate negative people. All they do is bring me down. It's so f**king annoying. :veryangry2:

jack white hate?

hope your not referring to my posting because i own every white stripes and raconteurs album plus dvd and the wallpaper to my mobile phone is a cartoon pic of jack and meg. so theres no hate coming from me. i was just surprised that throughout the year when the raconteurs were touring the world (otherwise known as europe and north america) there was no interest at all in jack or any of his bands. then he stops working (for the first time in like 5yrs) and theres all this interest him.

im just a little perplexed thats all. is it the alicia keys song?

You know that old saying/song: "Don't know what you've got till it's gone"
AKA taking people for granted. It reminds me of those Hollywood industry types who got all cut up when Heath Ledger died and considered him for an Oscar nom after they didn't give a rat's ass about him while he was alive.

YouTube - The White Stripes on Conan's Last Show (02-20-09)

that is the white stripes first performance together in over 15 months. more importantly it was conan's last show and the white stripes are his favourite band. they do his favourite song in this video We're Are Going To Be Friends off their brilliant LP White Blood Cells. its an interesting rendition.

well they arent really doing much at the moment. but something tells me that jack might surprise us with an album. he recently said in an interview for his 3rd band The Dead Weather that he is currently in his home studio mixing 40 tracks for an upcoming White Stripes film.

jack doesnt seem the type to make 9 or 10 albums with the same band. i think we should expect at most another 2 or so albums from the band.

the raconteurs should be his main band, not the white stripes

he doesnt have a main band. he gives each project equal attention. its not his fault that the white stripes have had much more success than the raconteurs. the raconteurs have many many more albums in them but for me they will always be a superior live band rather than a good album one. just my opinion
