It's official: Spice Girls to reunite for huge tour

Last updated at 15:34pm on 16th February 2007 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/i/commentIconSm.gif Comments (14) (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=436662&in_page_id=1773#StartComments)
The Spice Girls are set for a huge reunion concert this autumn - six years after they split.

All five former members of the Girl Power phenomenon are said to be agreed in principle to a charity concert in London followed by a national tour.

The reunion comes after the success of the Take That revival. The girls would appear with Nineties band Boyzone, who are also reforming, according to industry figures.
"They are really keen to do it if there is a charity angle. They are talking about doing it for Bono's Red campaign. It's been on the cards for a while, at least a couple of months. They are all good friends now," said one source.
Senior executives at TV production company Emap TV, who want to broadcast the concert, are flying to Los Angeles this weekend for detailed talks with Simon Fuller, the band's former manager, who still represents Victoria Beckham.
One sticking point is said to be their £2.5 million-a-head demands for the broadcast rights to the charity concert and tour. Ticket receipts for the concert itself would go to charity.
Details of the concert are still being negotiated but it would have to be after the birth of Baby Spice Emma Bunton's first baby in the summer. Scary Spice Melanie Brown is also due to give birth in March.
Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell had a daughter, Bluebell Madonna last May. The fifth member is Sporty Spice Melanie Chisholm.
The plans involve a concert at a huge London venue, possibly Hyde Park, in September or October.
It will be 11 years after the Spice Girls exploded on to the pop scene with their debut single Wannabe, still the biggest selling single by an all-female group.
A further eight No 1s followed before they broke up in February 2001 after record sales of 55 million. Halliwell left the band in 1998.
The Beckhams are close to U2 front man Bono, whose Red campaign raises money to help victims of Aids. Last year David appeared in a TV advert for the Motorola's Red Razr mobile phone, which generates a contribution to the charity every time it is used.
There have been a succession of rumours about a reunion, particularly at the time of the Live 8 concert in 2005. Earlier this month Beckham, Bunton and Halliwell were spotted having dinner together at Nobu restaurant in London, leading to renewed speculation.
Bunton was recently asked about a reunion on the Richard and Judy TV show and replied: "I would love to. Even the other girls have said they'd love to do it. It would be great."

there was a point in my life that i cared about the spice girls, that point has come and goneee. i know people who were die-hard spice fans and even they have gotten over the craze, i can't imagine there would be many real fans left, their absence has given everyone a time to reflect on their 'music' and its quality, i know i have and it was more about the show the girls put on rather than the quality of music.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/43052000/jpg/_43052281_melc_203getty_b.jpg Melanie C embarked on a solo career after the Spice Girls split up

Singer Melanie C has given the green light for a reunion of the Spice Girls. "For the first time ever, there is some truth in the rumours... it could happen," she told BBC London 94.9.
But the singer, also known as Sporty Spice, said it would just be for "a very short space of time... a final goodbye" and a thank you to fans.
It is thought ex-bandmates Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Mel B and Geri Halliwell had already agreed to reunite but Melanie C had resisted until now.
The singer, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm, said she admired Take That, who have enjoyed renewed success since they got back together last year.
But she added, "it would be really dangerous to think you could just follow in their footsteps because I think that's unique, what has happened to Take That".
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38832000/jpg/_38832905_spice_girls_200_203pa.jpg The Spice Girls were one of the UK's most popular acts

She added that she had always said she didn't want to get the band back together because "it was amazing, it was magical. We could never recreate it".
"But this year people have been talking about it and some of the girls have expressed an interest in doing it."
"I don't want to be the person that stops it happening or stops it being a five-piece," she told the radio station."
Solo careers
It is rumoured the band are planning six live shows around the world with gigs in London, Tokyo and Las Vegas, to support their Greatest Hits album which comes out later this year.
They are likely to begin rehearsing for the shows after Bunton gives birth to her first baby later this summer.
The Spice Girls were one of the most successful pop acts in British history, with a string of number ones starting with 1996's Wannabe.
Geri Halliwell was the first to leave the band in 1998, walking out while the group were on a European tour.
The Spice Girls released another album but finally split in 2000, with the participants all going on to solo careers with varying degrees of success.

Spice Girls need computer power to boost their weak voices

When The Spice Girls announce their reunion tour, there is a intriguing secret they will no doubt be keen to keep from fans.
They won't be belting out their songs just by Girl Power. . . but with the help of Computer Power.

For while the showbusiness world eagerly awaits their return, aides closer to them have been less enthusiastic about their vocal abilities.
Scroll down for more...

http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/06_02/SpiceDM2606_468x290.jpgThe Spice Girls in 1997: Ten years on, they are concerned about their voices

So Ginger, Scary, Sporty, Baby and Posh are going into the studio to pre-record the songs for their tour - in order to mask the failings of their own live voices.

On stage, they will employ a new hi-tech system which will present those digitally-enhanced recordings as their own voices.

It works by taking the singer's live voice on stage and electronically comparing it to the perfect vocal sounds that have already been recorded in the studio.

When the girls sing out of tune on stage, the mistakes in their voices are instantaneously corrected - in less than a tenth of a second - by computer to perfect the pitch and tone. And it is this remastered "virtual voice" which belts out across the arena. The girls' vocals are altered so quickly that it will appear the resulting perfect voices are live and their own.

The system is not miming as such, because they are not just mouthing music to a backing track.

But the voices of Ginger (Geri Halliwell), Scary (Melanie Brown), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm), Baby (Emma Bunton) and Posh (Victoria Beckham) are actually changed to make them better.

"As they sing, the computer program corrects the mistakes so that the sound comes out as the desired sound - so they appear to be able to sing really well live," said an industry source. The system is being seen as a godsend for Posh - who is known for her particularly weak singing voice.

There have even been suggestions that while they are short or rehearsal time, the girls will use the computer enhancement to make sure they can perform as soon as next Sunday at the Concert for Diana at Wembley.

A Spice Girls spokesman was adamant that detailed touring logistics which would cover the use of live vocal enhancement had not yet been discussed, adding: "They all have great singing voices."

They're back... Spice Girls to play London in December (and earn £10m each)

Seven years after splitting up, the Spice Girls have announced a world wide comeback spectacular.
The group, including Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton fell straight back in sync, striking familiar poses for the world's media.

The reunion tour, which is set to hit London on December 15 and take in Madrid, Koln, Las Vegas, Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires among others (scroll to bottom for list of dates and locations) will certainly be lucrative for the Spices.

They are expected to pocket about £10 million each.

Mel C said of their reunion: "We wanted to say thank you to our fans. It just feels very right for us."

Mel C and pregnant Emma opted for all back, while Mel B hit a low fashion note with an ill-fitting red pencil skirt.

The group said they would not be performing at this weekend's Concert for Diana.

Princes William and Harry were said to have asked them to attend the anniversary event.

But the band said they could not take to the stage so soon because Emma was about to have her baby.

Mel C said: "We would have loved to be there this weekend. It's just unfortunate timing."

Victoria said there would be a creche on the tour to accommodate the seven Baby Spices the band members will have between them once Baby Spice gives birth.

Posh said: "We're definitely going to have a huge creche. Our priority is going to be our families. We want to have fun.

"That's one of the many reasons for this, for our children to see what we used to do."

Geri said of the reunion: "Obviously it's nostalgic. But equally, if new fans want to come along, that's fantastic.

"I like to think our songs are universal and they are timeless. Hopefully, the young'uns will like it too."
