The greatest song in the history of the world. Maybe
By Anthony Barnes
Published: 27 August 2006
It is sung with lager-fuelled gusto by thousands of fans at every Oasis gig. Now "Live Forever" looks set to live up to its title after being named the greatest song of all time.
The 12-year-old single, the first to demonstrate that the Gallagher brothers could do tenderness as well as bravado and swagger, has beaten classic tracks by the Beatles, U2 and Queen in a magazine poll of music fans to identify the all-time greats.
Oasis pulled off a double feat by taking second place with their song "Wonderwall" in the top 100 compiled by Q magazine from tens of thousands of votes, although the Fab Four landed the most number of entries with six.
"Live Forever" peaked only at no 10 in the charts when it was released but has gone on to become one of the band's most enduring songs. When the magazine last held its poll three years ago the track finished in ninth position and the list was topped by U2's "One", a song reduced to fifth place this time around.
The magazine, which publishes the poll in its October edition on Tuesday, said of the track: "'Live Forever' doesn't date, satisfying a timeless need for communal joy that only the rock anthem at its best can truly deliver."
Noel Gallagher, who wrote the winning song, said: "People said to me after 'Live Forever', where are you gonna go after that. And I was like 'I don't think it's that good'. I think it's a good song, but I think I can do better."
The Q Top 10: Live Forever - Oasis; Wonderwall - Oasis; Smells like Teen Spirit - Nirvana; A Day in the Life - the Beatles; One - U2; Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen; Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division; Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin; Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve; Paranoid Android - Radiohead

Why do people constantly vote for Teen Spirit? Its a good song, but not that good.
They've done way better

Oasis is so so far away from my list of the greatest songs that they look like a dot from here.

Stairway to heaven is not overrated..(imo)....just wanted to say that...
What?Scissor sisters are also in the list?
Damn.......now this is definitely an awful list......I own the scissor sisters album...and damn it sucks.
A Day In The Life is awesome, I admit. But all other songs in top-five are bullshit, I swear. I don't even like any of them, not talking about calling them the greatest.
Creep is on the list but I think ther're many RH songs that deserve to be called the greatest much more, Creep is some kind of overrated too.
Johnny Cash's Hurt would be in my top-ten probably, not in my top-fourty.
Arctic Monkeys... No comments.

sorry but for me classic rock is so damn boring...Stairway To Heaven does nothing to me
back to that list:
whoever made this list has taken the most popular artists and their most popular songs...pretty lame if you ask me
i'm not even talking about listed covers as "Hallelujah" and "Hurt"...at least they should have mentioned Leonard Cohen and Nine Inch Nails, because after all it's their songs and not Buckley's and Cash's
although, i agree that both of these covers are better than the original ones, but still... a fucking mention...

Yess! Thank you! Cohen may not be the best singer...or even a good singer,lol...but he's a damned fine writer deserving of proper credit. Same goes for Trent Rezner. And Buckley and Cash both wrote brilliant songs that should have been on the list instead of half the crap that made it on.

Live Forever is most certainly not the best song of all time, and Wonderwall in 2nd? Smells Like Teen Spirit in 3rd? Give me a break..... The list is nothing but singles, and that's kind of an insult to these bands, considering the best tracks by any band are usually the ones not on the radio.
Is Hurt really Johnny Cash's best song, not even his own? What about Folsom Prison Blues?
Smells Like Teen Spirit is definitely not Nirvana's finest moment. Any Nirvana fan would sigh and shake their head at that idea.
Stairway To Heaven is a good song, but most certainly not a top ten.
And as a massive fan of the Verve, I'd say that Bittersweet Symphony is my least favorite song of theirs, it's such a shame to see the Verve's incredible and innovative music distilled to their most accesible song, when they were never about accesibility at all.

Yeah it seems unfair, and the amount of Oasis songs in the list makes me think the author is nothing but an Oasis fan... But what pisses me off is Smells Like Teen Spirit 3rd : what's beautiful in this song ? The lyrics are just like others, the music's particularly boring, and long. And just if I listen to it, then Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway To Heaven, Comfortably Numb, Hallelujah and Wish you Were Here, then I can't imagine how I can agree with this !
The list is nothing but singles, and that's kind of an insult to these bands, considering the best tracks by any band are usually the ones not on the radio.
That's right, but there are exceptions : I doubt Shine On You Crazy Diamond was ever on air, 'cause 25 minutes don't really fit in with the radio standards...
i'm not even talking about listed covers as "Hallelujah" [...]...at least they should have mentioned Leonard Cohen [...], because after all it's [his] song and not Buckley's
I can't agree with you on that point. A song means two things :
-The music, which is something orchestrated in the way Jeff Buckley chose, and I think it's much more beautiful with one only guitar than with the old orchestra and gospell-sounding backing vocals
-The lyrics : Leonhard Cohen only wrote the two first verses of the Hallelujah we all know, Jeff Buckley wrote the rest, changing fundamentally the meaning of the song (Cohen's message is like "I love God, I'll love Him forever", whereas Buckley tells about someone whose life and love made him lose his faith, which is much more tragic)
In conclusion I think the author's right to include Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah in his (or her) list, because there's not much in common in Cohen's and Buckley's versions.
Howerver, this list sucks sooow much ! I can't imagine a journalist or anywone could be proud of writing that.
I laugh at your feeble list.
May I ask what all the hype is about Yellow? Shiver is so much better.
Haha, Monkey Wrench, Foo Fighters have also done much better.
Live Forever is probably the best Oasis song, but not sogn in the world.
I think the top ten is respectable, I mean it's obviously based on the commercial hype which surrounded the songs and not opinion, because then we'd all have problems with it, but I think it's a fairly accurate list of the most high profiled songs of the past few decades...I do have a major problem with the list though! Why isn't hotel california higher up? I mean here we have one of the best written songs ever and it's been hailed for it's lyrics so I don't understand how songs like can't get you out of my head and stan are placed further up!

let's make one, me says!
"Coldplaying's Top 100 Songs"
Haha it would suck but not as much as the list above does. Besides, it'd bring some live and fun into this place.
Though I'm pretty sure that since it's a Coldplay board we'll have Yellow, Scientist and all in the top-ten anyway.

ohh johnny cash - hurt, lovely song,i didnt notice it in the list
That is the point, favourites are the greatest. That's the only way you can call something great. There're no any rules or stereotypes which songs are great and which are not, that's about what song is the greatest for you.
That's why there'll be many Coldplay songs.
But when did it stop us?.. I mean, we all know it'sa Coldplay board where people like Coldplay, U2, RH and all, but we still argue and make polls about bands and songs. Though I think it's pretty hard to choose 50 greatest songs, I'd think for years probably.

Then you should know I feel miserable now. The Cohen lyrics i heard many times are :
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah
and Buckley's I heard are :
Well I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, and the major lift

And she tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Well baby I've been here before
I've seen this room, and I've walked this floor,
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Well there was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me do you
And remember when I moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Well maybe there´s a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
and it's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah
But if you say they've been written and sung by Leonhard Cohen, i can't do anything but believe you.
I really thought the last three verses were from Jeff Buckley.

paranoid android as 10th? where is fix you?
If Kerrang magazine did a top 100 songs poll the reasults will be different, if the NME did a top 100 songs poll the results will be different, if MOJO did a top 100 songs poll the results would be different. if Virgin Radio did a top 100 songs poll, the results would be different
It all depends on whom the magazine readership is, and who is hot at the moment, there will never be a fixed "top 100 songs", because people's opinions change. If Q did a similar poll in 2008, it will be different, some of the songs there now wouldn't be there.

I don't know how you can imagine this when Coldplay is a son of Radiohead. Radiohead's research is much deeper and Coldplay is just another (great) band (like Muse) who came up in Radiohead's path and exploited Radiohead's work (mainly on OK Computer I guess).
1 random Coldplay song is just a part of a Radiohead compilation.
And in my opinion, Radiohead is much better than Oasis (so much better !!)
Not talking about who's better Oasis or Radiohead (it's quite obvious for me but oh well), since when Oasis is "more famouser" band?... I actually pretty sure that Radiohead has much more fans all over the world than Oasis.
