Glastonbury bill 'taking shape'

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has said he knows some of the big names who will play at next year's festival - but is keeping them to himself for now.

"We do have acts confirmed but I can't tell you," he said, adding that reports of Bruce Springsteen headlining the event in June were "absolute rubbish".

Mr Eavis remained "really hopeful" that Kylie Minogue, who pulled out last year after her cancer diagnosis, would play. Organisers have said they hope to let up to 20,000 more fans attend in 2007.

This would take the festival's capacity close to 175,000. Mr Eavis told the BBC News website he was "surprised" to see newspaper claims that Springsteen was in line to play at the event.

But he was "really reassured" by the erroneous reporting because it meant nobody had worked out who the real headliners would be. Certainly we hope for Kylie to do the Sunday headlining slot," he said. "We're really hopeful she'll do it but it's not confirmed."

In April, Mr Eavis conceded the Australian singer did not necessarily fit the traditional image of his event. But he added that her theatrical shows were "almost like a circus in a way, which really fits in with Glastonbury".

Last year's festival - with Coldplay, Basement Jaxx and the White Stripes among the stars on the main stage - was the most popular in its 35-year history. Some 112,500 tickets were sold in three hours, with 40,500 more set aside for staff, media, artists, crew and locals. The event took a break in 2006 but is due to be held from 22 to 24 June next year.

Next year's Glastonbury Festival is already starting taking shape, with organisers close to confirming the event's three headliners.

NME.COM has learnt that next year's bash could be led by a mix of pop heavyweights, crowd favourites and an international legend as Glastonbury looks to reclaim its summer crown following a year off.

According to well-placed sources The Killers look set to move up from playing before the White Stripes at the 2005 festival to headlining the Pyramid Stage in their own right on next year's opening night.

Meanwhile giving next year's festival an American twist, Bruce Springsteen is being lined up to close the Saturday night.

Following the story in this week's NME Glastonbury organisers have stated "the headliners for Glastonbury next year have not been decided", but festival chief Michael Eavis has admitted he is currently finalising the acts who will top the bill.

"We're creeping on slowly, I'm chipping away at the stuff that we want, and they've all said yes so far," he told NME.COM. "We have options for Saturday at the moment, and we'll make a decision on that soon. I like to get British if I can, there's an American artist in the frame for that slot too."

One act Eavis was prepared to name was his Sunday headliner, with the festival organiser restating his intention to have Kylie Minogue play the slot she was forced to miss in 2005 after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Kylie's on Sunday night, I'm sure," declared Eavis. "If she can do the Showgirl tour, that would be terrific - very theatrical, very Glastonbury. That's going to be great. She looks good, that's going to be a big moment. If she does the whole show, I'll be delighted."

Dame Shirley Bassey will perform at this year's Glastonbury Festival, organiser Michael Eavis has said. Dame Shirley, 70, who enjoyed huge chart success in the 1950s, '60s and '70s and sang James Bond theme tunes like Goldfinger, will appear on Sunday.

The news came as the local council granted the festival a new four-year licence, taking it up to 2010 with an expanded capacity of 177,500.

Mr Eavis told the BBC News website the licence was "absolutely fantastic".

He has also revealed Damien Rice would headline the acoustic stage along with The Waterboys.

Almost 400,000 fans have registered for tickets, which go on sale on Sunday.

The Arctic Monkeys, the Kaiser Chiefs and The Who have also been lined up to play at the event from 22-24 June.

On Tuesday, Mendip District Council in Somerset agreed to the new licence, which will allow the event to expand from the previous capacity of 150,000.

But festival organisers must meet certain conditions, such as holding at least three public meetings with Pilton Parish Council before the event and one afterwards.

They must also provide event management plans every year and disclose festival dates with plenty of notice.

Some 22,500 of the extra tickets will only be sold in conjunction with coach travel to and from the event.

'Breathing space'

The licensing board was made up of various local organisations, such as the police force, fire brigade and environmental health.

Mr Eavis said the approval has given them a bit of "breathing space".

"In the past we have had to jump through the hoops, year after year. It is great that we can plan future festivals safe in the knowledge that it will all be approved," he added.

Charles Uzzell, the council's business manager for planning and environment, said the licensing process had "gone extremely well".

"It has involved a lot of hard work from the applicant, the council, responsible authorities and the local community," he said.

Mr Eavis is hoping the pre-registration system introduced this year will stamp out ticket touts.

Tickets worth £125 for the last event ended up being sold to some people for up to £700.
