Starbucks is 'hiding' its cheapest drink from customers in order to boost profits, it has been revealed.
The marketing ploy known as 'product sabotage', in which consumers are cleverly encouraged to buy more expensive and profitable goods, is being used by many major retailers.
Starbucks, the high street coffee house chain, has been exposed by a BBC investigation as one of the chief culprits.
It sells a drink called a 'short cappuccino' which at 8oz is a third smaller and cheaper than the smallest size on the menu. Staff know what it is and have a button on the cash till to charge customers buying one, but most people are unaware of its existence as it doesn't appear on the menu board.
Profit-making
According to Tim Harford, who presents the new BBC2 series 'Trust Me, I'm an Economist', the 'secret cappuccino' is an example of a profit-making sales tactic by which a firm "deliberately damages its best product."
"Choose something off the menu and you're a more profitable customer: the biggest, most lavish drinks generate the highest profits. Coffee companies hide or downplay the cheaper drinks in the hope that customers will buy something pricier," the BBC investigation reveals.
Coffee Republic, another high street chain, also does the same thing and 'hides' its short cappuccino drink. In Coffee Republic outlets there's a "blank space with no price where this drink should be listed."
According to Mr Harford, an author and economist, it's "all part of an attempt to aim different prices at different types of customer."
Restaurants or travel agents ofer free meals or accommodation for children as a way of charging more to childless people who usually have more disposable income, he claims.
While supermarkets package their products to "look more like famine relief" rather than dress them up with "sexy packaging" because they want to persuade richer customers to buy something more expensive instead.
Sabotage
Computer firms also 'sabotage' their own goods. Mr Harford said Intel and IBM have both been guilty in the past of selling a top-of-the-range model at a cheap price, but with some functions disabled or with a chip added to slow it down.
It's more economical to do this than design two completely different models.

It's called the Antelope and they play everything really, except shitty chav music!
For example lastnight they started off with stuff like the strokes/maximo park/foo fighters/babyshambles/muse/kooks, then they played some older tunes like Sum41  and Linkin Park, then there's always a bit where they play stuff like Panic! ATD and Fall Out boy (for the local emos, lol) then towards the end of the night they play some good old 90's dance tunes like the Prodigy and MC Hammer  and even James Brown. It's great.

I move in on the 23rd September, and all my introductory stuff for my course starts up on the 27th I think. I also have 2weeks instead of 1 'Fresher's week', which should be fun. Lots of halls parties etc. Im looking forward to getting to know people. :)

Well, it's not in every disco. The "Stubu" for example in Bremen has 5 different floors with different tastes of music. That's a good idea I think, so the chavs all go to the black music area while the others are going to the rock area.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. It's pretty strange. :\
I planned to go to university last year, had my room place and everything, but then I stumbled across a site on the internet showing the types of things you could do during a gap year.
I saw the great white shark volunteering project in South Africa, the next day asked my parents if they could help me out to pay for the trip, they agreed, as they knew it was my dream since I was a kid, and the next thing I know im flying alone to South Africa for a month. It was mad! But the best thing i've ever done, im so glad I didn't go to uni now!

Wow, good story. :)
I can imagine how proud you were of yourself after coming back from South Africa. To do something on your own, in a foreign and unknown country... Must be a great feeling. :) Your parents must be very friendly, that they helped you to pay for the trip.
So, the other months you were working or what else have you done in your gap year?

Yeah I owe my parents big time for that...I mean, it was a lot of money and they could have easily said no, but they helped me because they wanted my dream to come true. They rock :nice:
Yeah I did feel quite proud of myself I guess! I was told that the girl before me, and also the one after me, both went home after only a few days because they couldn't handle living alone in such a big house, and the hard work and long hours at sea. That made me feel quite good, and now it's made me worry less about moving out of home because I know if I can make it out in South Africa on my own i'll be fine here! :)
I've done a lot this last year I guess...south africa, passing my driving test, getting a car, meeting lots of new people, going to lots of good gigs and my first festival....holding down a job! It's been good.
What type of job do you want to get into? Do you know what you'd like to study at university?
Larry

It seems that you really had a fantastic year. :) Where have you all met new people, expect here? ;)
What type of job do you want to get into? Do you know what you'd like to study at university?
Hm, the problem is... I still don't know! :D It's the same when I was graduated at school one year ago. I couldn't decide where and what to study, so I decided to take a job here in my city... to earn some money for the university and to have more time to decide what I wanna study.
I can imagine to study something like International Transport Management. My brother is studying that and he likes it, but then you also have to learn chemestry etc. and I hated science at school. ;) I can also imagine to study a language, because I like it a lot.
My English isn't very good and fluently, so maybe I could do a language trip or something like that before going to university. But it would be great to live in Berlin or Hamburg someday. :)
What plans do you both have for today? :)

Wow, International Transport Management sounds pretty cool! And doing a trip to improve your English could be amazing! (although your English sounds brilliant from what I can tell!)
Lots of people still don't know exactly what they want to do even when they've finished university! So don't worry about it too much....just see where life takes you! :) You've definatley done the right thing in taking time to work and make up your mind...I think too many people rush into things without thinking it through.
