Rufus Wainwright, great singer, does a great cover of "Across the Universe" by the Beatles and "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, i get a lot of comparisons to him, i guess its the tone of voice... he has a voice like no one else

Rufus' voice and the whole performance just blew me away.

Rufus is someone you either love or hate. I think he's a genius. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Want One was a fantastic album and will probably remain a firm favourite. It's a really clever piece of work... as is Want Two.

I totally agree. I had never heard any of his songs until I went to see him and now I have all of his albums and I can't get enough of him!!
I can now say it was THE best concert I have ever been to. His songs have everything.... they are haunting, funny, and sometimes the lyrics had me close to tears because he sang so passionately....
:)
I love Rufus!!
It's a shame that he's gay!!
because he's really hot

He had that Gap commercial people, he was recogized. He is just more indie and Canadian, so it's harder for him to break through.

In the Winter of 1998, Rufus was featured in a seasonal Gap Commercial, singing "What Are You Doin' New Years Eve".
From http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/9911/music-murphy.shtml :
"Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright has reaped the rewards of performing in an ad campaign as well, with an astounding sales increase of 1,500 percent from when his Christmastime Gap ad first aired. Using the ad as a tool, Wainwright's publicist Jim Merlis was able to get the attention of hard-to-impress bookers at Late Night with David Letterman and The Today Show. "At the same time the Gap ad ran, Rufus was named by Rolling Stone as Best New Artist for 1998," Merlis recalls. "It was the synergy of these two things that sealed the deals with these TV bookers. Because of the television bookings we saw a spike in sales, but those bookings came from the commercial."

Wainwright comes from a distinctly musical family. His father is American folk-singer and humorist Loudon Wainwright III, and his mother is Canadian folk-singer and songwriter Kate McGarrigle. Born July 22, 1973 in Rhinebeck, New York, Rufus Wainwright grew up in Montreal, where his mother made her home after his parents separated when he was three and subsequently divorced.

But seriously though, apart from the somewhat disturbing and wacky ending ( :uhoh: ) the gig was absolutely, heart-stopping.... it was fantastico.
Rufus and the entire band were totally on top-form. He was charming, witty and sincere.
And totally, totally camp!
i can bet for it!!! Rufus presentations are always cool!!
I like the song that he sing with Sean Lennon and another guy in the tribute to John Lennon!!! aaah...the Across the Universe cover...AWESOME

How good was Joan as Police Woman btw?!?!
Ah we missed most of her warm up set because my arsehole for a brother wanted to go to a pub first!! :dozey: We got there at 9:05 and she was nearly finished but it was so funny! There was someone up the very front who shouted something and she kinda started laughing to herself during the last song
I loved his band!

YEAH!! The little lead guitarist guy was so adorable  We were standing right in front of him :D
Also.... the guy wearing a hat playing the double bass... hubba hubba :sombrero:
The band were great.
It wouldn't have been the same without them - they added to the total madness of the encore :dizzy2:
I read somewhere that Joan used to go out with Jeff Buckley .....kerazy!
Your av!!  :P
Yeah he was a great little mover!
double bass guy....I can't remember what he looked like

Just been listening to beautiful child...
"When i am older than all these goddamned hills
And theres no reason for my mind to be still
Oh, how ill feel like a beautiful child again
Such a beautiful child again
When i have finally found my room filled with toys
Be banging on my crib excited with noise
Oh, how ill feel like a beautiful child
Such a beautiful child again
And when theres nothing to gain
Or bring me pain or pin the blame
On you or myself
And when they finally fall
These wailing walls and burning crosses
Gods twilight and all
How ill feel like a beautiful child
Such a beautiful child again"
mmmm... this was AMAZING live :D sooo rockkkky

How good was Joan as Police Woman btw?!?!
excellent.... went to the york gig on monday, so amazing, second time i've seen him, he was loads better in an opera house.
Best song: Beautiful Child???? Me thinketh so!
when he and his band stripped down to the underwear it was magnificent, just the strobe coming on and him and his band dancing around like mad things. i thought i was in another world, it was scary, obscure and crazy and thus utterly brilliant! Old Whore's Diet indeed! :D

Yeah, I saw it! :idea2: Is it the same documentary which is on his new DVD?
It was the first time I had heard anything about him too. My boyfriend had been talking about him for ages so I thought I may as well watch and see what all the fuss was about! Glaaaaad I did :D
It was funny because whenever I heard the name "Rufus Wainwright" I always imagined him to be a huge black man, singing husky jazz...Radio 2 stuff. How wrong was I :dizzy2:

Yeah I wanna get my hands on the DVD soon :)

oooh I'm a huge Rufus-fan as well, I went to see him in Paris a couple of weeks ago. It was awesome !! one of the best concerts of my entire life ! and you know what ? I managed to get some backstage passes after the show and met the whole band: Rufus, Joan, Jeff, Matt, and JACK !!! (god, jack, the lead guitarist btw, is soooooo hot !)
well.. RUFUS ROCKS ! and if you like him, go see him live and then you'll definitely LOVE HIM !
::Hayley::
29-05-2005, 02:21 PM
Wowwww.... The documentary was so much better second time around, after seeing Rufus live.
Hearing him talk about the problems with his Dad and then about "Dinner at 8" .... the song is unbearable to listen to now! In a good way - if that makes sense?! :( It's just so sad.
I love Rufus :)
I watched the documentary, Rufus is a very interesting guy... ! :cool3:

am really glad i found this thread coz i used to listen to his dad's stuff quite a lot (Loudon Wainwright III, but you probably all know that). "I Eat Out" is one of the best songs lyrically i've ever heard - "I can cook a little but it's not a lot to shout about, it's kinda mean cuisine, so i eat out". Am definitely gonna check out some of Rufus' work now. thanks all !!

Yes - you should most definitely check out Rufus!! If you like his Dad's work, you should listen to "Dinner at Eight". It's about their turbulent father/son relationship. Very sad :( But FANTASTIC!

Hi hayley ! sounds like he's inherited his father's writing ability then :) my fave loudon album that i used to listen to all the time (yet still can't remember the title !) was the one he wrote after his divorce. some really sad lyrics but really sharp and witty too. that's what "i eat out" is about - having to deal with feeding himself. I'll see if i can find any rufus tonight. cheers !

The first time I really heard Rufus sing was on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack - he sang that French song "Complainte du La Butte". And I din't know who he was really, and it wasn't until after I heard "Hallelujah" from the Shrek soundtrack that I liked him even more. I fell in love with Hallelujah! And the way he sang it too....
I've also been trying to find the sheet music for it...but no such luck!
A song that always makes me happy when I'm a little sad is "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk" :)

Having listened to his first 2 albums over the past couple weeks, and having Want in the day. Rufus is one songwriting genius, even if some of his work is borderline "Emo".

Well I like his work very much. He has a very single voice and a certain way of writing songs that feels a little new, strange sometimes (I think of his Agnus Dei for example).
The song I like the most by him is certainly The One You Love.
Anyway, I like it when he covers old French songs from the thirties, fourties or fifties like the two you can find on his Want Two album : "Quand vous mourrez de nos amours" and "Coeur de parisienne".

rufus wainwright is absolutely wonderful. it took me one night from not knowing who he was to completely falling on love with him. he is so talented, it's not even funny. his voice is just amazing, so is his lyrics. i've seen him live a couple of times, and met him as well, he is the funniest guy ever. and him being beautiful does not hurt as well. there's just something about those gay guys! :D

His mother, the great Kate McGarrigle, died recently, which is really said. His dad and sister (Martha) are fantastic as well but Rufus in my favorite.

It's not quite to the level of John Cale's version (who wrote this arrangement) but it is quite amazing in its own right.
