Question about codecs

Okay, so I use VLC to play all my mpg and avi files, but the files skip and I sometimes get error messages that there is a delay of information. I figure it is a codec issue, but I don't know which one to download to solve the problem.

I am a mac user, so I am seeking some assistance as to which codec to use, DivX or 3ivx? Where do codecs go or what do they do when installed?

I'm not an expert but, from experience, DivX always worked fine for me.
