 Garlic sauce please.

Okay, in the unlikely case that Chris and Gwynnie are really walking the red carpet together we will be having a little entertainment event on February 18th in front of Shepherds Bush Empire:

Mitch will bring her hat and I will bring the garlic sauce and amid the applause and cheers of the crowd, Mitch will eat her hat :)

Hey, everyone!

Is the the Daily Mail...so I wouldn't beleive anything they say, but here you go anyway:

Exactly! Anything from the Daily Mail is always to be taken with a grain of salt, to say the least. Although Chris and Gwyn together on the red carpet would be awesome, i don't think it's something we should get our hope up for, since they've both been so private, especially Chris.

my college doesn't see fit to supply each dorm room with ondemand . i wish they did, though. surprisingly, we get HBO out here in hickville.

really, though, why are they releasing brand-new movies on CABLE? i've never heard of that being done before. there's probably a good reason, but to me it almost sounds depressing, like a "straight to DVD" sort of thing

I think it looks really interesting, am looking forward to it. If it gets released here that is, is only coming out on limited release :(

aww, well i don't know about it being a big release here, though i could be wrong. i bet my arthouse cinema at home will have it, but perhaps not the mulitplex. but if it's on limited release, wouldn't it be playing in lots biggish cities? here, limited release usually means NYC and LA only, and then if it's successful and acclaimed, then they go to nationwide arthouses. and then if it's popular in arthouses, like juno and slumdog millionaire and garden state, it'll go to multiplexes. i would think that cities like london and liverpool and manchester would have limited release movies, but that's just me guessing.

Mimixxx
01-02-2009, 09:44 PM
Here films get allocated according to how many screens a cinema has. So like the cinema I used to work at only had 7 so we got nothing but the big, crappy, blockbuster/kids films/Eddie Murphy rubbish :dozey:

Then cinemas with 8 or more would get certain other films, like now they'd get stuff like Benjamin Button or The Revolutionary Road as well as all the other crap.

Then cinemas with say 12 or more will get arthouse type films as well as everything.

And really small films will only go to huuuuge cinemas, which would be London like you said.

ApproximatelyInfinite
01-02-2009, 09:51 PM
aww, well that stinks. i guess that makes sense, but it sucks for the smaller films, which are usually the best ones anyway, in my opinion.

Ooh, right. Never mind then :P

Yeah, it's kinda weird, but apparently On Demand has some sort of deal because they have a lot of indie movies on there right now that are still in theaters. And they're definitely not "straight to DVD", so... *shrug*

Plus it's $9.99 and really limited time, only a couple of weeks.

Gwyneth in 'f**k the haters' rant

http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/Gwyneth_Paltrow_s_450x300.jpg

Ranting Gwyneth Paltrow has bitten back at critics of her lifestyle newsletter, Goop.

The stressed star insists she's no square and defiantly declares: 'F**k the haters! I saw this blog of people writing horrible things about me and for a second your ego is so wounded,' the 36-year-old said.

'How could people hate me, my intentions or what I'm trying to do? I'm a good person and I'm trying to put good things into the world.'

Paltrow has had her share of critics, who've branded her aloof and a bit of a prude.

She revealed: 'I'm probably less square than people think. I never get drunk to the point of throwing up. But I get very talkative.'

And Paltrow confessed to Elle that, despite her healthy lifestyle, she misses smoking terribly. 'Man, I wish smoking didn't kill you, I'd be smoking right now. I miss it,' she admitted.

She also shed light on her relationship with husband Chris Martin – and why they are never pictured together.

'It doesn't behove us to be a public couple. He certainly doesn't want to be that,' she explained.

'I mean, we've never ever walked down a red carpet together, we never will.' (;))

Find out what else Paltrow has to say in the March issue of Elle magazine, on sale tomorrow.

wow. She sounded pretty angry there... is it just my imagination or did that seem a bit more... impassioned than usual!?!? Or, upset or something? Gee.

Not that I could handle pressure like that probably, hearing strangers talking about me all the time. But I don't want to live that way and don't want to build a life that would lead in that direction, eeek.

I don't know though. That sounds pretty angry... though a lot of it may be taken out of context. I never trust the media for everything. They take the words "I hate...people" out of a sentence, post it across the world and then you find out the person actually said "I hate when poor people get treated so badly."

UGH

Gwyneth Paltrow on Jonathan Ross, smoking and her marriage to Chris Martin

http://images.mirror.co.uk/upl/m4/feb2009/2/2/38811C7F-D6BC-EA21-621EBDAB0EFFC112.jpg

Gwyneth Paltrow brushes off rumours that her marriage is on the rocks... as she poses in a stunning lace outfit.

The film star said she and pop star husband Chris Martin don’t like to make a big show, then grinned: “It doesn’t behove us to be a public couple. So it’s just better if we don’t. We will never walk down a red carpet together and if people think it means we’re not together... ha, ha, ha.... so be it.”

Gwyn, 36, who looked fab in a photoshoot for ELLE magazine in this dark see-through number, then confessed to a love of something else black...Guinness. The stout, she said, makes her “very warm and talkative”.

And describing how she stopped smoking after she got pregnant, Gwyn gushed: “Man, I wish smoking didn’t kill you. I’d be smoking right now. ”

She also told how she found Jonathan Ross’s remark that he wanted to “f***” her, “hilarious” but said it was “very offensive to my father-in-law”.

Gwyneth’s new film Two Lovers is released in the UK on 27 March.

Full interview in the March issue of ELLE, on sale tomorrow.

The Daily Mail called Anthony Martin...idiots :dozey:

Gwyneth Paltrow's anger at smutty Jonathan Ross 'propositioning' her for sex

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed her family's anger that Jonathan Ross jokingly pestered her for sex on his BBC1 chat show.

The Oscar-winning actress said the interview in which Ross infamously said he would 'f*** her' before adding she was 'clearly gagging for it' was 'very offensive to my father-in-law.'

Miss Paltrow's father-in-law is Exeter-based chartered accountant Anthony Martin, the father of her husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/02/article-1134462-034729B2000005DC-913_468x787.jpg

Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that her father-in-law was very offended by Jonathan Ross's remark that he would 'f**k her' on his chatshow last year.

Her own father, Hollywood producer Bruce Paltrow, died six years ago from throat cancer.

Ross's comments - made in a screening of his Friday night show in April 2008 - have already been condemned by the BBC Trust as 'gratuitous and not editorially justified.'

Miss Paltrow's belated reaction has emerged just 10 days after the end of Ross's three-month suspension for leaving obscene messages on the actor Andrew Sachs's answerphone.

To accompany the interview, Miss Paltrow posed for a glamorous photoshoot in which she wore a variety of stunning outfits including a black jacket with exaggerated puffed-out shoulders and a micro mini-skirt.

In the interview with Elle magazine, Miss Paltrow, 36, also debunks her somewhat dull image, talking of her love of good red wine, Martini and Guinness.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/02/article-1134462-034735E6000005DC-530_224x423.jpghttp://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/02/article-1134462-03258E59000005DC-839_224x423.jpg

She also claims to have given up smoking... but only until her 70th birthday when she will start again and even hints that she takes illegal drugs.

Talking about her friend Courtney Love, the former girlfriend of rock star heroin addict Kurt Cobain, she said: 'I don't think she's on Class A narcotics anymore.

'Maybe just Class C. That's no big deal - aren't we all, ha, ha, ha!'. (Er nooo Gwyn )

At the time of the interview, 'Class C' included cannabis and drugs such as Ketamin and other tranquillisers.

Miss Paltrow also revealed for the first time extraordinarily personal feelings about her father's death and even how she thinks she might have prevented it.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/02/article-1134462-03474D42000005DC-280_468x681.jpg

He and his only daughter had gone there to celebrate Gwyneth’s 30th birthday. He’d had radiotherapy for oral cancer, but died of double pneumonia.

She says her interest in healthy eating arose from her father’s death.

‘I met a macrobiotic counsellor who was dying from cancer and cleared herself.’

The counsellor did a consultation with her father after he’d had surgery; she said that he had to ‘completely detoxify’ otherwise the cancer would come back.

And it did 'the way she’d told me four-and-a-half years before it would', Gwyneth told the interviewer, angrily banging her hand on the table.

'I believe there’s a direct correlation between all the environmental toxins, all the preservatives in food, and all of the disease.'

Paltrow added that 'it's been really tough' dealing with her father’s death.

She said: 'To this day I’m faced with it all the time. I’ve had pneumonia twice in the past year, and that’s ultimately what he died of.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/02/article-1134462-03472961000005DC-366_233x312.jpg

'There’s a real emotional link to that. I’ve been dealing a lot with my own fear of death. And every time I get a cold now.. So this is my new challenge, letting go of the fear.'

In rare comments, Miss Paltrow also spoke about her husband the singer Chris Martin.

Asked about Martin's songs Swallowed In The Sea and Fix You - which he wrote for Coldplay’s 2005 album X&Y to help Gwyneth deal with the bereavement - she said: 'It’s so hard for me to listen to some of those songs.

'I can’t listen to Swallowed In The Sea without crying. I’m amazed he stuck with me, because I was a wreck. I can’t believe that he did.'

She added about her husband that he had 'a real heart', was 'fundamentally generous', 'spiritually evolved' and a 'good, good man'.

She said he had a 'texture to his soul' and a 'kindness and a generosity of spirit and a willingness to understand other people'. She concluded that he's a 'musical genius'.

Anthony Martin would not add any further comment yesterday.

Paltrow and Knightley to model Comic Relief T-shirts by Stella McCartney

London, Feb 3 : English fashion designer Stella McCartney has roped in actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Keira Knightley to model her Comic Relief T-shirts.

McCartney, 37, designed a range of limited edition T-shirts for Comic Relief, featuring unique photographs taken by her late mother, Linda, with one of them sporting an image of her father, Paul McCartney, and his band mates.

Another T-shirt had Morecambe and Wise, the comic duo, captured by David Bailey, the veteran photographer, and all the photos had a slight alteration made - their subjects were given red noses.

The fashion designer had a number of celebrities and friends at the event, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Keira Knightley, Claudia Schiffer and Sam Taylor-Wood, who were photographed by her sister, Mary McCartney, wearing the T-shirts.

The T-shirts, which will go on sale on February 9 at 214 TK Maxx stores nationwide, have been priced from 5.99 pounds for babies (http://www.topnews.in/paltrow-and-knightley-model-comic-relief-tshirts-stella-mccartney-2119198#) and children, and 9.99 pounds for adults.

Profits from the sale will go to Comic Relief ahead of Red Nose Day on March 13.

"It''s a real honour to be involved in such a tremendous cause and be a part of the Red Nose Day campaign 2009," the Telegraph quoted McCartney as saying.

"The designs of the T-shirts were inspired by iconic images of iconic people by iconic photographers and adding an element of humour to them," she added. (ANI)

(ANI)

Even more!!

Gwyneth Paltrow sheds her squeaky clean image

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has attempted to shed her squeaky-clean image by insisting she loves cigarettes, alcohol and Jonathan Ross's smutty jokes.

BBC presenter Ross caused a storm on his Friday night chat show last year when he offered to have sex with Paltrow, who is married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

Asked if she found the encounter offensive or hilarious, Paltrow replied: "Hilarious to me. Very offensive to my father-in-law."

The 36-year-old actress and mother-of-two used an interview with Elle magazine to dispel a few myths about herself.

The biggest misconception, Paltrow explained, is "that I'm a good two-shoes. I'm not. And that I'm a strict macrobiotic. I'm probably less square than people think.

"Man, I wish smoking didn't kill you. I'd be smoking right now. I miss it. The last cigarette I smoked was the day I found out I was pregnant with Apple. I had to sit down and smoke one final cigarette. It's such a beautiful thing. I'm so p***ed off it gives you cancer. Cigarettes were my upper, they were my downer. I would think with them, write with them. I just love them so much... I've decided that when I'm about 70 I'm going to start smoking again. Why not? I can't wait!"

Paltrow went on: "I love good red wine. White wine is nice too. I don't like lager, but I like stout - I love Guinness. I never get drunk to the point of throwing up or anything, but I get very warm and talkative."

The actress also had stern words for anyone who mocks her website, Goop, which she gives fans a glimpse of her multi-millionaire lifestyle.

"I am who I am. I can't pretend to be somebody who makes £15,000 a year. That would be completely inauthentic. I know what my intention is - and if it makes one person's life better then it's worth it. And f*** the haters!

"I saw this blog of people writing horrible things about me. And, you know, for a second you lose perspective and your ego is so wounded. You think, how could people hate me or hate my intentions or what I'm trying to do? I'm a good person and I'm trying to put good things into the world."

:: The full interview is in Elle magazine, out on Wednesday.

So she was on a strictly macrobiotic diet for 4 years because of health reasons and she smoked right up until she found out she was pregnant?????
I like her, but come on ..... she is trying so hard to convince everyone of her dark side. Enough, we get it. Besides, I never thought there was anything terribly wrong with being a decent person and eating healthy :\

She drinks, she swears, she parties. In this month's ELLE, Gwyneth Paltrow sets the record straight about everything.

Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't want you to think she is a goody two-shoes any more. 'I'm probably less square than people think' she declares to Craig McLean who interviewed her in London for the March issue of ELLE (on sale tomorrow).

'I wish smoking didn't kill you. And you know what I had the other day which I loved? A French Martini. I had one too many' she reveals.

She's equally as candid about how she looks and what she chooses to wear. 'People don't realise, sometimes you wear a dress because your friend made it', she says about a Stella McCartney dress she wore on the red-carpet recently, even though some people thought it was a bit too short (one blog accused her of looking like a prostitute)

'I just got out of sweatpants, out of mummy mode. I love fashion , but when you're breastfeeding and you're a stone-and-a-half overweight, it's demoralising to try to wear good clothes.'

She is making up for lost time now in a string of dazzling red-carpet appearances in micro-mini hemlines and sky high heels, usually by Guiseppe Zanotti or TOD's of which she is the face.

Thanks to Madonna's trainer Tracey Anderson, who she is set to be collaborating with on a chain of gyms, Gwyneth has carved out a post pregnanacy figure that has had us all asking, 'how can we get those legs?' The Tracey Anderson DVD everyday, is Gwyneth's simple answer.

So what prompted her to chop her famous waist length hair last year, just as the bob was having a fashion moment? ' My hairstylist, an old friend, was brushing my hair and I was like, 'F*ck this hair! Cut my hair.'

Not what you'de expect from the woman who's life appears from the outside at least to be carefully mapped out.

Read this interview in full in this month's ELLE, which hit's newssatnds tomorrow.

Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t taking the criticism of her lifestyle newsletter GOOP lightly.

The site features weekly letters from Gwynnie, including recipes, shopping tips and sight-seeing recommendations.

The 36-year-old actress recently told USA Today she “feels sorry” for the haters, but now Paltrow is singing a different, harsher tune to Elle UK.

“F**k the haters! I saw this blog of people writing horrible things about me and, for a second, your ego is so wounded,” she says. “How could people hate me, my intentions or what I’m trying to do? I’m a good person and I’m trying to put good things into the world.”

Paltrow also took the opportunity to set the record straight on the misconceptions of her personality:

“I’m probably less square than people think,” she tells the mag. “I never get drunk to the point of throwing up. But I get very talkative.”

Adding to the idea of her “cool” image, Gwyneth said she misses cigarettes: “Man, I wish smoking didn’t kill you. I’d be smoking right now. I miss it.”

As for any rumors regarding a split with her Coldplay hubby Chris Martin, Paltrow says, “It doesn’t behoove us to be a public couple. He certainly doesn’t want to be that.”

Although they’re rarely photographed together, Martin and Paltrow will reportedly walk the red carpet together at the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards.

i didn't know gwyneth used to be a smoker. that strikes me as really un-gwyneth, but i think that's her point in revealing how much she loves it and how she's going to go back to it.

like someone said before, i think she's just trying to hard to be the cooler, altier gwyneth that loves to smoke and swears and talks about guinness and makes snap decisions. i think she just has to realize that the press is the press and they're never going to give a completely accurate representation of you, good or bad. it must suck terribly, but that's the business she's chosen to be in.

i think one last cigarrette the day you find out you're pregnant isn't a big deal, as long as it's your last, and it sounds like this was. for some reason, though, it kind of bothers me that gwyneth says she's going to go back to smoking when she's 70...i bet she's half-kidding, but i just think it's so disgusting and so harmful that i don't think it's really that good that she's going on about how lovely they are. to me its almost like she's advertising them.

I bought Elle today (I'll TRY and get it scanned, no promises though, isn't my computer/scanner)

In case I can't I'll fill you in on the Chris portions that we haven't already heard :P

The article is entitled Viva La Vida

The interviewer is the same guy who Chris walked out on in the Guardian article. Hehe, but he doesn't mention this to Paltrow.

They talk about Courtney Love and how she said Chris was in Travis, Gwyneth just laughed. :P

It was also just before Thanksgiving and Gwyneth mentioned that they were postponing it until Chris got home from the US tour:

' "He's only home for 24 hours then he's off to Sheffield to start the UK tour" she says disconsolately'

She suggests Goop is a nickname Chris gave her.

She also confirms that she DOES have a 'C' for Chris tattooed on her thigh :stunned:

Fine. Was all taken out of context. The smoking and drinking questions were put to her, like "It's my round at the bar, what would you order" and "I'm going outside for a cigarette would you come with me?" etc.

The Eff the haters stuff she was saying with a laugh.

She seemed in a good mood. The interviewer was impressed with her (more so than with her moody husband that walked out )

It was all too weird, i really don't see her a the kind of person that would try to change people's view on her just so they'll like her....... it all seemed pretty stupid to me.

So the press (as always) took the juicy bits and handled them at their advantage..... :\

That's all i wanted to hear :nice:

she probably thinks that at 70, her life is almost over anyway.. so she might as well take up smoking again.. that's sounds stupid.. but it's the only thing I can think of that would be her reasoning. idk Yep, that's most likely to be her reasoning. "I'm old, I'm dying soon, so I'll live up a little"

Yeah...but is also irresponsible to recommend dangerous cleanses and using olive oil to make your bowel movements faster.

I guess she's just completely honest and doesn't think about lying to be a role model...you know? Since I've been sick these past two days with a body trying to cleanse itself from some rotten food , I don't approve of "cleasing" your body on purpose on a day or two.

I love Gwyn!...I know how she feels!...I love smoking and i really cant since im only 16 and my parents cant know and i cant buy them...but when i get to that age im gonna go nuts haha NOOOOOOOO, don't smoke! It's bad for you. Don't go crazy at 18 because you'll get hooked, and smoke for years, and then get cancer or emphysema when you're older

I completely agree. I think that she knows that people don't always have the best perception of her, and that most people think she's a square.. :square:
so she is saying things to make herself seem more interesting and outgoing. What the problem with being :square:? I'm a crazy, bubbly, funny :square: (aka goody two-shoes)!

Paltrow ‘can’t believe’ Martin stuck by her

http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2009/02/Gwyneth_Paltrow_s_450x300.jpg

Gwyneth Paltrow says she 'can't believe' her husband Chris Martin didn't leave her following the death of her father.
The actress admits she turned into a 'wreck' following the death of Bruce Paltrow from throat cancer related complications in 2002.

But she reveals she was pulled through her dark depression by the 'real heart' of the Coldplay star.

'I'm amazed he stuck with me, because I was a wreck. I can't believe that he did', Paltrow, confessed after admitting this week she misses her therapist in the US.

The Iron Man star, 36, maintains it was Martin's 'kindness and a generosity of spirit and a willingness to understand other people', that pulled her through her mourning.

To this day she still struggles to listen to some of the star's hits which Martin penned for her during her trauma, telling: 'It's so hard for me to listen to some of those songs. I can't listen to 'Swallowed In The Sea' without crying.'

After dismissing speculation about their marriage and defending their boycott on public appearances together, Paltrow is eager to cement her successful marriage branding the singer, 31, 'fundamentally generous' and 'spiritually evolved'.

I think it's a lovely interview, personally I think Gwyneth is a very natural, normal person who was just lucky enough to be born into Hollywood and then also to make a fortune out of her job but that's her reality at the end of the day.
Her and Chris relationship to me seems just normal, far to normal so that the press doesn't get their head around that two famous people can be together and not make a drama or a show of it.

Gwyneth Paltrow to Write Cookbook

(Splash News)

Gwyneth Paltrow is branching out all over the place these days. First she started her own lifestyle newsletter, GOOP, dedicated to nourishing the inner aspect. Now the Oscar-winning actress has plans to publish her first cookbook, sweetly titled, My Father's Daughter.

According to publishers Janklow & Nesbit, the book will focus on the importance of togetherness at mealtime, emphasizing that cooking for your family is the ultimate expression of love. All the recipes have been designed with the entire family in mind.

The tentative publication date is slated for fall, 2010.

Gwyneth, 36, has said that she really got into cooking after the birth of her daughter in 2004. The once glamour-girl seen at the trendiest parties says she's now more content to play housewife for her husband, Coldplay's Chris Martin, and their children, Apple, 4, and Moses, 2.

Gwyneth also says she gets her love of cooking from her dad, Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002 from throat cancer.

"My dad was a famous pancake maker and I'm working on [adapting his] recipe right now," she said. "I'm making mine slightly healthier."

Last fall, Gwyneth embarked on a road trip with chef Mario Batali, where the two explored and tasted their way through Spain. The trip was filmed for a PBS series Spain: On the Road Again.

BE

This week we have a BE that focuses on the question of how to BE with one’s children. There are some familiar voices below, but I have also enlisted the wisdom of two other incredible women, Heidi Butz and Camila Batmanghelidjh. Their responses made me realize that we are all always in the process of evolving, and you do not need to have children to benefit from these ladies’ amazing insights. Simply regard yourself as the child we are asking about, no matter your age, and see what comes up for you.

And if I can humbly add one small idea to their thoughts...it has been my personal experience (both as a child and a mother) that children are like little radios picking up our frequency. They know the real truth about what we are feeling versus what we are presenting and it is incredibly isolating to find a major discrepancy between the two. When in my grown-up sphere I am confronted with disappointment or my own intolerance and a bad mood to boot, I often name what is going on (in other words, I say, "Mommy is having a hard day, and I am feeling upset") so that the very mundane human “bad” feelings do not turn into some grim phantom in the room with me. Sometimes I don’t have the maturity in the moment, and when it fails me, I apologize at bedtime when my children and I are having a talk. I have felt my daughter’s whole body sigh in relief when I have simply and very specifically voiced regretting my own behavior.

Here’s to doing the best we can.

-- Gwyneth "GOOP" :P Paltrow

Question:

As a mother of two young children with lives as busy as my own, I am constantly trying to do more than I can achieve. Sometimes with all of the multitasking, school runs, thank you notes and household responsibilities, not to mention my professional life, I feel like I am doing so many things, none of them as well as I could. My main priority, far and above anything else in my life, is my children, their happiness, stability, individualism and well-being. In your opinion, what are the most effective ways to be with one’s children? What is most important in terms of their emotional and mental development? Are there specific things we can do to help them grow up to reach their full potential?

Camila Batmanghelidjh replies:

Parents could be forgiven for feeling bombarded by childrearing advice. It begins with a multitude of books, internet sites and professional wisdom in relation to your infant and it continues into oppressive literature on “toddler taming” and trench warfare in relation to adolescents. In fact, the subtext of all this advice is that if you put your foot down wrong in relation to bringing up your child, you commit “parent crime” and cause lifelong damage to your offspring. How terrifying to be a parent!

Undoubtedly different techniques work with different children. Some need firm and clear boundaries. Others are too willing to comply and will respond to praise. But the most important task is to identify the essential parenting ingredient – an absolute stable law that one can use in all circumstances – and adapt the philosophy to suit the task of the moment.

So the big question is, “What’s the most important task in being a parent?” To help us understand, I’d like to share with you some of the findings from brain science. We now know that the human brain is sculpted and created predominantly as a result of the interactions to which the child is exposed. There are two very important parts of the brain that loving care programs. The front part, right behind the eyes, closest to the skull, is called the prefrontal lobe. This area is responsible predominantly for executive functions, i.e., it’s the organizing part of the brain doing the planning, looking ahead, anticipating the consequences of one’s actions, experiencing empathy, and expressing care toward others and the self. This part of the brain helps to calm down and soothe the emotional expressions that emanate from the limbic system: a deep structure mid-brain from which our emotional repertoire, our memories and our more impulsive reactions emerge.

A well-cared-for individual achieves equilibrium or a sense of balance by using the front part of the brain to calm down the emotional parts of the brain. Children learn through the experience of being cared for how to calm themselves down and organize their own emotions constructively.

Deprived and abused children experience challenges. Lack of love leaves an underprogrammed prefrontal lobe, devastating the child’s ability to calm themselves down. Violence, trauma and being in situations of chronic terror overprograms the fear centers of the brain, making the child hyper-agitated, impulsive and difficult to calm.

We have this knowledge because our ability to scan the human brain has allowed us a closer look and a greater understanding. It is due to this knowledge that the single most important element in a child’s development has come to be recognized as exposure to consistent loving care, which is imparted to the child through their attachment to a mother or father figure. Ideally, it should be their biological caretakers, but it can be any parent substitute who is loving, caring and consistent.

As a parent contemplates the most important tasks, they need to take on board both the sophistication and the simplicity of being with their child in a thoughtful way. Your children don’t need excessive material goods or constant trips and gifts. The best present you can give them is the availability of your mind. When your child feels you are thinking about them, they will experience being held and connected to you as if they are in your mind and they can similarly carry you in their mind.

So learn the art of just thoughtfully being there: noticing them, praising them or maybe doing simple things together. It could be a bedtime story, cooking and washing, or going to the park together. You could read books or newspapers to your child or simply notice what they’re doing. While they’re with you, they could draw, do their homework or just lounge around.

What research shows is that in the presence of a caring companion, the calm from the caretaker’s brain can create calm in the child’s brain. Because their brain is not developed fully, very young children will need the adult consistently with them to help them manage emotions and energy. But as the brain develops, the capacity to calm down is “internalized.” The child carries the memories of this ability and can use it to soothe themself when distressed because they remember how the parent did it.

Parents can’t be calm and gentle all the time. You will lose your temper, shout and scream and behave impatiently. But if you apologize and “own the problem” as yours, the child will feel they are not the bad one. They will learn resilience, which, in effect, is the ability to fix bad situations and get the good out of them or transform them into positive outcomes.

The best way to think about the parental task is like “banking care” so that your child can draw upon the resource when they need it.

Dr. Karen Binder-Brynes replies:

As the mother of two daughters, now 22 and 18, and a psychologist in full-time private practice, I am well acquainted with the incredible balancing act between work and one’s own life and the needs of family, particularly children. What I have learned from my own experience as well as listening to my patients over many years are some key ingredients in raising healthy and well-adjusted human beings. I believe the most important aspects of being a healthy individual are having good self esteem, good judgment and the ability to self-soothe in constructive ways. How do children develop these attributes? I feel that being available to one’s children emotionally is the number one priority in helping them grow into good and productive people. What I mean by this is that as parents, we must see our children for who they are without constantly projecting our own needs and wishes onto them. In order to accomplish this, we must spend time with them, listen to them and most of all, HEAR them. Children let you know what they need and they act out when they are not getting their needs met. A good example of this is with overprogramming children with too many structured activities. Children will regress, withdraw and misbehave when they are too overstimulated and programmed. Sometimes they need to just be home with their parent or caretaker and play imaginatively. If we can step back and put our needs aside sometimes, children are very clear in their communications.

In this day and age, with both parents often working or busy outside the home, it is very difficult to find quantity time, but quality time is as important. The small but powerful moments are all very valuable in helping our children feel cherished and adored. Eating meals together whenever possible is a wonderful time for connection.

Several other thoughts...children need boundaries. They feel safe when they know what is expected of them and what is predictable. They also need consistency. For example, No means No. I also feel very strongly about this: Children need to be helped to adapt to their environment and not always have the environment shaped around them. Parents today often try too hard to make life easy for their children by manipulating everything in their lives. This does not teach children to cope and eventually leads to low-self esteem. In essence, when children know they are loved and seen for who they are and are taught to adapt to their surroundings, they have the best chance of growing into happy, well-adjusted and productive adults.

Heidi Butz replies:

I’ve found that one of the most effective ways to be with our children is to try to make sure that they always feel heard. The forums for this change as they grow older, but it was important to us that from a very young age that our children knew that their opinions mattered and that they had a voice.

When they were toddlers, we incorporated them into the routines and decision-making of the household. This was not just a matter of getting them to pitch in. The daily goings-on in the house provided a setting in which the children could exercise their judgment and their preferences. On trips to the store, we gave our two-year-old simple choices about what to buy. It was up to her whether we would have striped or polka-dotted beach towels for the summer. The same was true of getting dressed in the morning. No color coordination is worth forfeiting the empowering feeling of putting together an outfit. For toddlers, this is the equivalent of your parents hanging on your every word.

Our dinner table reflects similar priorities. We work hard to ensure that the opinions of our 10-year-old son and his thoughts on the Presidential Inauguration are given as much air time as those of his politics-obsessed father. While it’s sometimes a struggle to stay as focused on the details of our seventh grader’s 11-0 field hockey game when her high school senior brother is waiting to recount his nail-biter basketball story, that validation goes a long way.

I’ve noticed that the lines begin to blur on the topic of being heard when the kids get into high school. I’m not sure that they want or need to be heard nearly as much as I want to hear them. And they know that information is power. It never occurred to me when I was doing call-and-response clapping with our two-year-old son in Kindermusik that 15 years later, I would stand in the kitchen anticipating the slam of the front door after practice, hoping his grunt of “hey” might turn into a conversation. Or that I would be aware that the odds of getting the first eye contact in three days go up dramatically if he happens to be “starving” and pauses at the refrigerator on his way down to the basement. But I’m trusting that beyond thinking that I’m a needy mom, they know that we value and learn from what they have to contribute.

We don’t outgrow the longing to be heard. I recently returned to work after 18 years at home with our children. At the end of the interview process, I met with the man for whom I would be working. His questions and attention to my narrative made me feel like I had truly been heard and understood. I knew immediately that hour had made the whole journey worth it – regardless of the outcome. I did end up getting the job but I also got a reminder of the importance of actively listening to children – of any age.

Heidi Butz

Cynthia Bourgeault replies:

I don’t know if I’m pulling rank here: I’m speaking now as a grandmother, not an active-duty mom. But my four grandkids have given me a second chance to learn the lessons that I missed the first time around. Or maybe it’s simply that the passage of time lets one see the forest, not just the trees.

The single most important thing is to take time to LISTEN to your children – as fellow human beings, not just as your charges or pet projects. There’s a wise little human soul in there, ageless in heart even while young in time. Follow her lead. Listen to what she says and DOESN’T say. Don’t just manage her, but allow the things she’s interested in to open and energize your own heart. That’s the secret of eternal youth.

Second, don’t be afraid to be real with your children. I’m not speaking so much here about being honest with your feelings (that’s generally good, but don’t forget that as a parent you have a primary responsibility to hold a safe space for your kids, and your self-expression should never overwhelm or frighten them); rather, I’m talking about being transparent about what you truly love. For eighteen years my own mother managed, scolded, imposed manners, dragged us kids off to Sunday school, arranged lessons in necessary social graces, chaperoned parties and supervised homework. And yet, for all that gray blur of duty, the one day I truly remember from my childhood was the day she simply gathered up her beloved oil paints and marched us off to a local arboretum. As my brother and I explored the gardens, I watched her a short distance away, poised before her easel, golden sunlight streaming down her face, completely entranced in what she was doing. How I loved her in that moment! And the unspoken lesson on following your bliss has remained with me for nearly six decades.

New pictures in London today (oooh no snow, must have melted fast :D)

Braving the chilly conditions, Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted bundled up as she walked to a pub in London’s Camden district this afternoon (February 5).

The “Shakespeare in Love” actress donned an army green winter coat along with a pair of massive lace-up boots as she passed the paparazzi, keeping her head down in an attempt to avoid being photographed.

http://www.gossipgirls.com/files/images/gwyneth-paltrow-259-6.preview.jpg

During a recent interview with UK Elle magazine, Gwyn pointed out that while the public may perceive her as a goody-two-shoes,” in reality she’s a bit of a rebel.

She explained, "I'm probably less square than people think," adding, "Man, I wish smoking didn't kill you. I'd be smoking right now. I miss it. The last cigarette I smoked was the day I found out I was pregnant with Apple. I had to sit down and smoke one final cigarette."

Paltrow continued, "I also love good red wine. White wine is nice too. I don't like lager, but I like stout - I love Guinness."

On another note, it was just announced that Gwyneth is working on a new cookbook titled "My Father's Daughter".

Due out in 2010, the Oscar winning actress tells of getting her passion for cooking from her father, "My dad was a famous pancake maker and I'm working on [adapting his] recipe right now. I'm making mine slightly healthier."

Yeah I'd forgotten about that. And the Jonathan Ross thing was nothing too, certainly not deserving of phone calls to Chris' family members :dozey:

Is no wonder they're publicity shy when everything they say gets picked up on and twisted.

Anyway....

I wonder what she'll wear to the Grammys :D

What?! phone calls to Chris's family members? after Gwyn was on Jonathan Ross?

She wasn't, but papa Martin wasn't exactly thrilled..... :\
More, this one isn't edited so harshly:

Gwyneth Paltrow on Jonathan Ross, smoking and her marriage to Chris Martin

__________________________________________________ _______________

Gwyneth Paltrow is planning to release her own cookbook.

The Running With Scissors actress - who recently launched her own healthy living website, GOOP - has signed a deal with publishing company Janklow & Nesbit to produce a collection of family-focused recipes emphasizing the importance of togetherness at meal times.

And Paltrow will dedicate the tome to her father, Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002 following a battle with cancer.

Gwyneth says, "My dad was a famous pancake maker and I'm working on [adapting his] recipe right now. I'm making mine slightly healthier."

The book, My Father's Daughter, will be in stores next year.

Last year, Paltrow - who is married to Coldplay rocker Chris Martin - launched a TV series called Spain: On the Road Again, which documented her travels across the country with chef Mario Batali.

Paltrow - a former advocate of macrobiotic eating - says she abandoned the restrictive diet while pregnant with her daughter Apple.

"I couldn't look at brown rice. It made me throw up," she admitted in an interview last year, adding that she succumbed to cravings for "...french fries, grilled cheese and yoghurt".

Nup. Part of me hopes it will, but the other part hopes it doesn't only so they don't look like hypocrites and get called out for it. I reckon they have 3 options:
1) Gwyneth won't walk
2) Chris won't walk
3) They'll do it separately.

I hope they do take a photo inside the auditorium.

'[Gasp] Where did you hear that? Hmmm... maybe!'"

So if that Gwyneth article's title is "Viva la Vida", does mean that Chris is officially bigger than her now, and there will be no more references to "Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow"?

:P

is just me who found that a bit strange (the tattoo things), ok once you have it, but think where you decide it to be, cause first is the tattoo man who will see that part :uhoh:

anyways i find it cute.

oh well notlost92, she has said she don't think she'll ever be as a main character/role on any film now, she doesn't expect that now and she won't like that as it will mean to be more time without her kids.

Yeah! Honestly yeah.

He hardly gets called that anymore, he never gets asked about her (partly because they're scared of the reaction, obviously :P) but I see references to him in articles about her, far more than I see references to her in articles about him these days.

Huh, really? Cause I was just reading an article yesterday that called him Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow, I haven't noticed any sort of shift!

But if you're right can we have a giant Coldplaying party to celebrate this miraculous occasion?

I seems only snarky articles call him that these days.

Whereas when I see articles about her it's "Gwyneth Paltrow, who is married to Coldplay star Chris Martin..."

Hmm, yeah, but that could also just be because she's doing this whole lifestyle thing now with GOOP, so the articles are talking more about her lifestyle/life. *shrug*

Mimixxx

Exactly.

Any article about her these days (that isn't part of a promotional junket) is either about Goop or marriage rumours.

If she hadn't started Goop she wouldn't be in the press half as much as she is now.

It's not a criticism of her, part of it is through choice.

But Chris and Coldplay are famous for more than his marriage to her, whereas, at the moment, she is not.
