I never really took much of REM 'cept for thinking Everybody Hurts is a beautiful song but thats kind of predictable. But recently I've just been listening to Automatic For the People and Monster and can't get enough of them.
Plus, might be seeing them at T in the Park so am so excited about REM at the minute :-D :D

Every band seems to have their own thread in this section, so I thought I'd be the first to start one up for one of the biggest bands of all time;
R.E.M. (Big surprise I know since my name is Stipe!)
Chris Martin talks about their influence on him and how he thinks that X&Y in parts sounds like early R.E.M. And then of course he bought Michael Stipes lunchbox for 20,000.
So, here's the R.E.M. thread where any admirers can talk about them ;)

Also got so central rain :)
A very very good band live, really puts on a great show and gives you value for your money, got over 2 hours of REM, and two opening acts. One of my fave cocnerts i've ever been too, certainly my fave stadium gig
REM is the best band in the world, by far! I don't think they've ever released anything I don't like.
Does anyone here have their album "New Adventures In Hi-Fi"? That's the best album ever made, no doubt. ;)

Yeah, it's absolutely one of my favourites on NAIHF, but my all time REM favourite is "It's The End Of The World..." I don't think I'll ever get tired of that song!
I wonder if REM is going to release a album this year, I really hope so. And this time I'm sure they will make a ROCK album again! :) It's been a while since they did that.

I don't really like them but the put on an amazing show at Ardgillan Castle. Mike lost me during the whole "create awareness" portion of the show though.
Moby ruled at that show too!
We saw them at Loch Lomond in the summer and they were great, I'd seen them at Slane and Lansdowne Road previously. The Ardgillan Castle gig sounded cool on the webcast- was it on the radio in Ireland?

That's spot on!That's what i like the most about them!Whereas the same doesn't for Coldplay!99% of their songs suit only miserable and melacholic moods.I mean if you're really happy you won't go on to listen to Coldplay, you know...Whereas you can listen to R.E.M. when you are happy, sad, confused, angry, overwhelmed and so on.There's certainly a great variety of songs suiting a great variety of moods!

I am a huge R.E.M. fan (that's also why i've already posted an R.E.M. thread which noone seems to have noticed...) and believe they are one of the greatest, biggest, lovliest and most influential, amazing and indifferent bands in the world.I read about so many people having seen them live and even more than once in a year and i feel so bad....I mean i haven't seen them live and they've been here only once when i was 8 years old....They have visited some countries so many times and during the same yaer and have been here once.Doesn't this sound a bit unfair???I really hope they'll make it this year with the release of their new album in the beginning of 2007.That's my last hope...Anyway here are some pics you might like:

Dude, new songs are all over Youtube for over a month or so
But what do you think of them?

But what do you think of them?
Some good tunes, though the quality is a bit dodgy. I've only listened to them once, by the way.
I'm trying to wait until I get to hear the 'real deal'.
Has there been any date set for the new album?

Has there been any date set for the new album?
Some time next year.
Probably around the same time Coldplay will release their new effort.
... or Guns 'N Roses :P

REM album update
Band are 'two thirds to three quarters' through LP
REM are close to finishing their new album.
The band plan to release the follow-up to 2004's 'Around The Sun' in the spring of 2008.
The band, who are working with Bloc Party and Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee, played five shows in Dublin in late June and early July as a "working rehearsal" to test out several of the new songs.
Speaking about the record bassist Mike Mills told Billboard: "We've got another three weeks of recording and singing and what little overdubbing we're gonna do.
"Michael (Stipe)'s got a bunch of singing and I've got some background to do, and we've got a couple of songs we hope Michael will finish. And then after the next three weeks or so it's the mixing phase."
Mills said that there wasn't "a whole lot over overdubbing on this record". However, he added that himself and the rest of the band "made an agreement we weren't going to say what it is or not because we don't want to have expecatations out there in any direction.
"But of course you can go on YouTube and listen to some of the Dublin shows and get a pretty good idea of where we're going."
Speaking about working with Jacknife Lee, Mills said he was "fantastic. He's just what we needed at this stage of our career. He's very willing to experiment. He keeps things loose. It's a fun process; he just realises this is something we're all lucky to be able to do, and we're all enjoying it as much as possible".
The band are set to release a live CD/DVD package called 'REM Live' on October 15.
REM name new album
The record will be out in April (Or March if you believe Uncut)
REM have named their new album 'Accelerate'.
The band's 14th studio LP, the follow-up to 2004's 'Around The Sun', will be released in April.
The band worked on the album in Vancouver and Dublin with Bloc Party and Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee.
During their stay in Dublin last summer, the band played five sold-out ‘working rehearsal’ dates at the Olympia Theatre, previewing tracks from the record.
Confirmed tracks for the album include 'Until The Day Is Done', 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge', 'Mr Richards', 'Staring Down The Barrel Of Middle Distance', and 'I'm Gonna DJ', a regular in the band's set on their 2004/2005 world tour.
Frontman Michael Stipe said the guitar-driven LP is "the fastest we've made in 20 years".
He told Q: "I think the songs on 'Around The Sun' are great, but in the process of recording we lost our focus as a band. Now, that focus is back. And it's razor sharp."

I'm really looking forward to this album.
It's rumoured to be more like the 80s-R.E.M. again, which is awesome! Cannot wait.
"R.E.M have announced that their latest album is ready and will be called 'Accelerate.' The Atlanta band's 14th studio album is to be released on March 31, with a American release following on April 1.
Several tracks from 'Accelerate' were unveiled during a five night residency at Dublin's Olympia Theatre last Summer, and they include 'Until The Day Is Done', 'Mr Richards', 'I'm Gonna DJ', 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' and 'Staring Down The Barrel Of Middle Distance'.
The new album, R.E.M's first since 2004's 'Around The Sun' has been recorded in Vancouver with Jacknife Lee whose previous producing credits include Snow Patrol and Bloc Party."

The band also film their new video in a lingerie shop
REM have unveiled the tracklisting for their eagerly awaited new album 'Accelerate' .
The 11-track follow-up to 2004’s 'Around The Sun' is out on March 31, and was produced by Jacknife Lee.
One of the songs, 'I'm Gonna DJ', was recorded during the 'Around The Sun' sessions, but was not included on that record. However, it was a regular in the band’s set on their 2004/2005 world tour.
The other ten songs, including first single 'Supernatural Superserious', were previewed at the band’s five-night 'working rehearsal' at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre in June last year.
The band filmed a video for 'Supernatural Superserious' in a New York lingerie shop on Monday (January 21).
According to the band’s official website, the tracklisting for 'Accelerate' is:
'Living Well's The Best Revenge'
'Man Sized Wreath'
'Supernatural Superserious'
'Hollow Man'
'Houston'
'Accelerate'
'Until The Day Is Done'
'Mr Richards'
'Sing For The Submarine'
'Horse To Water'
'I'm Gonna DJ'
UK tour dates are to be announced very shortly.
