...kraftwerk.
i've seen rammstein live :)
Good german music?
Beatsteaks
Die Ärzte
Farin Urlaub
Wir Sind Helden
Rammstein (they had good songs)
Guano Apes (same as Rammstein ;))
Urghs ..
Other good german music, not so well known. Don't like their music much, but they have skill :
Subway To Sally --> Some kind of "middle-age gothic" or don't know ..
Söhne Mannheims and Xavier Naidoo: I have heard music from them in the past, but at the moment .. I don't like them much .. but Xavier is a pretty good singer.
There are many good german bands out there.
Hint: Look beside the media control single charts *grin*
By the way ..
Better talk english, so that everybody can understand it :D

Good choice, I hear it right now, too ;)
Helge Schneider can do serious music?
I don't really wonder about it .. but I think he see's himself more as a comedian and entertainer, or not?
°°°Morning°Glory°°°
31-08-2005, 07:29 PM
Yeah I only know him like that, but I think I've heard he can play several instruments very good or stuff.
Farin's new album is so lovely!
winnie
31-08-2005, 07:33 PM
If I recall correctly, he is a pretty good Saxophone player. Also he's pretty good in jazzy things, such as piano and stuff. But I never heard a real serious song by him, maybe because I never searched for one ;-)

Yes, I've never searched for him, too ;)
But when you look this way .. Stefan Raab is also really good in music things.
I think, if he want to, then he can do really good music, too. No question ;)
°°°Morning°Glory°°°
31-08-2005, 07:47 PM
yeah I think that's true.
Remember Max Mutzke - yeah it was a fuckin pop hit, but it sounded good somehow!
Gitta Rensolo
31-08-2005, 07:52 PM
The thing with raab is true...
Helge doesn't write serious songs but if you see him playing life that's amazing. He plays the saxofon very good and the piano...this is a multitalent! And I think he is really funny..but he doesn't see himself as a comedian...
°°°Morning°Glory°°°
31-08-2005, 07:57 PM
not? well sometimes I have the feeling he is always crazy, not only on stage...and this way he acts...somehow it almost scares me!
Me thinks helge Schneider is an entertainer. For sure ;)
°°°Morning°Glory°°°
31-08-2005, 08:01 PM

No, thats definitely NOT a classic example of german music.
Please listen to some good bands, not that old "Volksmusik" out there ..
I think you don't listened to any of this bands, I've postet on this thread.
In germany, nobody's talking about Wolfgang Petry anymore ..
That are the typical prejudices about germans and their sense of good music.

Music's way more important than cooking - and on that count, the score is Britain 10 - Germany 0!! :P
And anyway, isn't somebody called Jamie Oliver popular in Germany?? Which nationality is he, I wonder?? :D

You underestimate german music skill.
And you forgot that fact, that english is the worlds first language .. so, you got more international chances. I mean, a lot of german bands don't give a fuck 'bout singing in english. That's why you people never heard of them ;)
I mean, there are a lot of british bands with no good music, too ;)
What? You don't know Rammstein, Julia? Oo
And the translation of winnie's postet german adage:
"Exeptions prove the norm" (that's correct, I think ..)
mc_squared

Have you seen they're live shows man? IMO they're already bigger than Coldplay...
We talk about good music and music skills .. not how popular they are. It's good to see, that for example Rammstein are very popular in the USA, but there are other german bands, you don't know (or don't want to know), which don't sing in english. And they have at least the same skill like a lot of english singing (britain ..) bands...

mc_squared
31-08-2005, 09:39 PM
Maybe it's because they have stepped away from mainstream music..
I don't know why, but there has always been a tendency towards "hard and heavy" in Germany.
Take their dance music for example - it's exactly the same. All trancey and techno.
Dance music in the U.K. is far more soul-orientated............................as it is in the States, too. Far better.
Maybe it's because they have stepped away from mainstream music..
Yes. You got it ;)
When I search for new good music, I look always apart the mainstream chart music ..
Well, that does not mean, that I don't listen to mainstream. But actually, most bands placed in the music charts are shitty ..
Don't understand me wrong. ;)
But every country has its talented bands ^^
And one thing about "hard 'n heavy". Don't know if I understand you right (because of my english *g*) .. but german music can also be hard 'n heavy ...

I think you'll find that Rammstein were NEVER part of mainstream music - ALWAYS hard and heavy. That's what they are - and it's never going to have broad appeal.

Well, the management around Rammstein don't "hype" them anymore.
They have their fans, and good. The same as other bands ..
We could also have only hard and heavy music rotating in the majorities cd players, but as long as the music labels and the new media (TV and magazines, etc..) hype another teeny pop band or ringtone music, there's no chance ...

Coldplay's music is accessible to a lot of people because it isn't in any way extreme. THAT's the difference.
You could say the same about Pink Floyd, The Beatles, U2 or even The Rolling Stones.
They all have one thing in common: BROAD appeal.

No, there are lots of bands which could be described as "great", but none of those German ones mentioned could ever be put in that category.
Grönemeyer possibly could be, as he is a good songwriter and doesn't make "noise".
I have respect for him. :D
grönemeyer is a great songwriter, but he can't sing

Which band is great and which is not depends still (thanks god for that) on everyone's point of view alone. So I think this discussion is unnecessary ;-)

God? George W. Bush? The Queen? You?

Well you've listed THREE of the greats in your sig, so you must know something!!
Don't know the Beatsteaks, I'm afraid!!
:P
I give it up ..
Everybody has it's on point of view .
For me, there are german bands, that I would mention as "great".
Xavier Naidoo has a great voice .. but I don't like his music ..
Die Ärzte have great live performances and so on .. but they make german punkrock, so no music for you!
....
You can go on and on...
Beatsteaks ARE great :D :D

Well, that's true, of course, these are my "greatest Bands", the Beatsteaks aren't great in your definition though, cause they are german and punk ;-)
But maybe we can make a world-poll:
Everyone aged over 12 in the world lists it's 5 favourite bands, we count the results and those, who got the most votes get listed in the "Greatest bands"-list. This would be fair and democratic. But I'm afraid those people from asia, which are approx. the half of the world's population, will shift the results to some unknown local bands, but who cares, I'll start printing the Poll-sheets... 5,5 billion to go... ;-)

"Favourite" has nothing to do with it, as there are far too many people out there who are clueless!! :P
So, as they are clueless, the may hear hard and heavy music, too.
Then, it's a decision of the media, which play the music, that they "clueless" ears hear ...
If they play hard and heavy, they will hear hard and heavy ..
If they play techno, they hear techno ...
The influence of the media ;)

No, because you should be clued up enough not to believe all the media hype. There are far too many "sheep" around - that's the problem!
You should be able to listen to anything with an open mind, without allowing yourself to be influenced by the media.

Now THAT I agree with!! They were indeed pioneers. I loved OMD, and they were strongly influenced by KraftWerk (you missed out the "w").
I particularly liked "The Model" and "Tour De France"!! :D

there another really good rock band from Munich.
ALEV - that means "Flame" and is also the first name of their singer - she is Turkish. Their sound is definitely (alternative) rock, no ballads except one, but the voice is just beautiful. Maybe somebody wants to check out their debut album "We Live In Paradise" - but if you do, please skip the first track, you could get a bad experience of the band cuz the first song is instrumental and sounds just like bad NuMetal. the other songs, esp "If We Ever" and "Sweet Lullaby" are awesome.
No I don't know them personally and try to do advertise, I just had to tell you about them cuz I like them very much...
You mean this?
http://laut.de/wortlaut/artists/a/alev/index.htm
Mh, never heard of them before. Maybe I'm looking for ..
And we forgot to speek about Seeed!
I actually don't like their music, but they have potencial.

:D wow.. crazy disscussion here
i think it is stupid to argue if a band is good or not... that depends on your point of view,....
but i have to say you all forgot about THE best german band: REAMONN!! they are great. they have potential... i wonder that no-one mentioned here...
imho beatsteaks are great. i´ve seen them twice. its a lot of fun watching their shows... also fantastic four have an superb live quality (imho)
i also like gentleman... though i have to say the albums are a bit...eerrm boring to me... but live.. in summertime...perfect...
another artist i really like is thom. he is former singer of vivid. (not too bad as well)
a frined of mine introduced me to a band called mon)tag. they are pretty good
go and see www.tapeterecords.de /has also an english translation
there are a lot of other german artists too.
just to mention some more bands... (i dont like these bands personally but....) the ones mentioned so far..show a pretty onesided view...
h-blockx
blumfeld
mia
all the new band with girls as front"man" :D like Juli, wir sind helden, klee, etc etc...
sasha/dick brave
tocotronic (these are brutally bad imo)
jeremy days
